Exclusive interview: João Gabriel Rocha on fighting Buchecha at BJJ Stars

BJJ Stars will feature a number of big fights on Feb. 23 in São Paulo. In one of these, Soul Fighters’s João Gabriel Rocha will be tasked with the mission of beating Marcus Buchecha.

To João, facing Buchecha has already turned into a classic — in 2018 they fought twice, and there were two fights before that, with Buchecha always coming out on top. Which is why, this time around, João is planning on a different approach. Read on to see what he told Graciemag.

GRACIEMAG.com: What are your thoughts on BJJ Stars in general?

JOÃO GABRIEL: The event is wonderful in terms of card and infrastructure. It doesn’t owe anything to any international event — very well organized, and it is very good to have this type of event in Brazil. Nowadays everybody is abroad; the adult black-belts who compete at a high level are no longer in Brazil, so the public in Brazil misses seeing a big event like this one. The main names fight in tournaments like the Worlds, Pan, Euros, as well as the tournaments with superfights, and they are all outside Brazil. BJJ Stars is coming to shake up the Brazilian market, which is getting better. I think, in fact, that people have to show their support by buying tickets or pay-per-view, because it’s a way to support the sport. If the event manages to turn a profit, we’ll have more events of this type.

How did you get invited to BJJ Stars, and what was your reaction upon finding out you would again face Buchecha?

I was in Brazil, and Fepa Lopes contacted me to learn whether I would be available to fight on that date. I was immediately excited for the simple fact of being able to fight in Brazil; I didn’t even know my opponent yet. I miss fighting in Brazil, so I practically said yes just for that alone. Soon after, the talked to me and said it would be Buchecha. I accepted right away, because it’s a fight that interests me greatly, and I jumped on the chance to do two camps consecutively.

You two have been rivals for years and have always fought tough matches. What new thing are you bringing to the table this time?

To be frank, I haven’t changed almost anything to fight Buchecha, but I have a reason for this. Each time we fight each other, the fight gets more even, being decided in the details. The last two, for example, went to the judges. We have fought a few times and he had his arm raised in every one of them, but I’m very focused right now, feeling like I’m getting closer each time, and I know I’m almost there — I will overcome this detail and throw down, do what I know and play the game. He who is able to put his cards on the table first will come out the winner.

What is different about living and training in the U.S., and how has is made you better than before?

People here don’t fall for distractions. We get distracted very easily in our culture. Example: going to the gym on foot. You stop to talk to a friend on the street, shoot the breeze and end up arriving late. You don’t do your warm-up right, or you train less than you should. Here in the U.S., there’s none of that. Everybody is on time and with a desire to do everything just right, to respect the school’s norms. The focus is greater here — you go from training home and then straight back the next day. Everything is improved. The BJJ lifestyle is at a hundred percent, no distractions. It’s not a bad thing to be with the people we like, but here I focus completely on living the sport.

What sort of danger do you see Buchecha conjuring up?

The danger is fighting Buchecha in general. Everybody stresses his standup game, but when he’s pulling, it’s also hard to pass. He’s good in all areas, and it’s very hard to fight an opponent of that stature. He has 11 world titles — four of them by getting past me — so there’s nowhere to run.

What do you predict?

In the past I have both put a strategy in place and not put a strategy in place to face Buchecha, and so far it didn’t work out any of the times. Lately I understood that what I have to do is focus on my game, my preparation. It’s complicated to draw a strategy, visualize a scenario and, during the fight, have to change everything. So, due to the unpredictability, I prefer to do my thing and be prepared for everything during the match.

O BJJ Stars chega recheado de grandes duelos no dia 23 de fevereiro, no ginásio do Hebráica, contando com vários craques do Jiu-Jitsu mundial em duelos eletrizantes. Em uma dessas batalhas, o atleta da Sloul Fighters João Gabriel Rocha terá a missão de bater o recordista de títulos mundiais na faixa-preta Marcus Buchecha.

Para João, encarar Buchecha já se tornou um clássico: Só em 2018 eles se enfrentaram duas vezes, e em outras ocasiões anteriores eles já mediram forças, sempre com Buchecha na vantagem. Para desequilibrar a disputa ao seu favor desta vez, porém, João terá uma abordagem diferente.

“Na hora da luta terei de estar preparado para tudo. Ele é bom em todas as áreas e é muito difícil lutar contra um adversário desse porte, mas a cada vez que nós nos enfrentamos a luta fica mais parelha, sendo decidida nos detalhes. As últimas duas, por exemplo, foram na decisão dos árbitros. Estou bem focado, me sentindo cada vez mais próximo e sei que falta pouco, vou superar esse detalhe e sair na porrada.”

GRACIEMAG.com: O que você achou do evento BJJ Stars no geral? O formato, os nomes convidados. Como você acha que um evento desse porte impacta no cenário do Jiu-Jitsu?
JOÃO GABRIEL: O evento está maravilhoso em termos de card e infraestrutura. Não perde para nenhum evento internacional, muito bem organizado e é muito bom ter esse tipo de evento no Brasil. Hoje em dia todo mundo está fora, os faixas-pretas do adulto que competem em alto nível não estão mais no Brasil, então o público do Brasil fica carente de ver um evento grande assim. Os principais nomes lutam torneios como o Mundial, Pan, Europeu, além dos torneios de superlutas, e são todos fora do Brasil. O BJJ Stars chega para movimentar o mercado do Brasil, que está ficando melhor. Acho, inclusive, que a galera tem que apoiar na compra de ingressos ou pay-per-view, porque é uma forma de apoiar o esporte. Se o evento conseguir lucrar vamos ter mais eventos desse tipo.

Como foi o chamado para o BJJ Stars e qual foi a sua reação ao saber que enfrentaria mais uma vez o Marcus Buchecha?
Estava no Brasil e o Fepa Lopes me contatou pra saber se eu teria disponibilidade para lutar nessa data. Já fiquei amarradão pelo simples fato de poder lutar no Brasil, ainda nem sabia qual era o adversário. Sinto falta de lutar no Brasil, então já praticamente topei só por isso. Logo em seguida, ele veio conversar e falou que seria o Buchecha. Aceitei de cara, porque é uma luta que me interessa muito e não tive dúvidas ao topar o desafia para emendar um camp no outro.

Vocês são adversários há anos, e sempre travaram batalhas duras. O que o João tem de novo para trazer pro jogo desta vez?
Para ser bem sincero eu não mudei quase nada para enfrentar o Buchecha, mas eu tenho um motivo para isso. A cada vez que nós nos enfrentamos a luta fica mais parelha, sendo decidida nos detalhes. As últimas duas, por exemplo, foram na decisão dos árbitros. Já lutamos algumas vezes e ele saiu com o braço levantado em todas, mas eu estou bem focado, me sentindo cada vez mais próximo e sei que falta pouco, vou superar esse detalhe e sair na porrada, fazer o que eu sei e jogar o jogo. Quem conseguir botar as cartas na mesa primeiro vai sair vitorioso.

Qual a diferença de morar e treinar nos EUA no que isso te fez melhor que outrora?
O pessoal aqui não tem distração. A gente se distrai muito fácil na nossa cultura, exemplo: ir par a academia a pé. Você para pra conversar com um amigo na rua, troca uma ideia e acaba chegando atrasado. Não faz o aquecimento direito, ou treina menos do que deveria. Aqui nos EUA não tem isso. Todo mundo chega no horário e com muita vontade de fazer tudo certinho, respeitar as normas da academia. O foco aqui é maior, do treino para casa e de casa para o treino. Tudo melhora, o lifestyle do Jiu-Jitsu está 100%, sem distração alguma. Não é ruim estar com as pessoas que a gente gosta, mas aqui eu foco totalmente em viver o esporte.

Qual o maior perigo que o Buchecha pode trazer para esta luta?
O perigo é lutar com o Buchecha no geral. Todo mundo ressalta o jogo em pé dele, mas ele puxando também é complicado de passar. Ele é bom em todas as áreas e é muito difícil lutar contra um adversário desse porte. Ele tem 11 títulos mundiais, quatro deles passando por mim, então não tem pra onde correr.

Qual a sua previsão pro combate? Tem uma estratégia montada para encarar a fera?
Eu já fiz estratégia e já não fiz estratégia para enfrentar o Buchecha, e até agora não deu certo em nenhuma das vezes. De uns tempos para cá eu entendi que eu tenho mais é que focar no meu jogo, na minha preparação. É complicado traçar uma estratégia, visualizar um cenário e na hora da luta ter que mudar tudo. Então, pela imprevisibilidade eu prefiro fazer o meu e na hora da luta estar preparado para tudo.
