Murilo uses pressure from the top. Black Bull Squad

A successful competitor in the colored belts, Murilo Amaral recently kicked off his black belt career in a similarly victorious way, dominating the featherweight division in both the South American and the Porto Alegre Open.

Excited about his first gold medals among the elite of competitive BJJ, Murilo remembered that the previous belts, where he won two world titles in Abu Dhabi, gave him a solid base to start winning even with little experience in the black belt.

“The time I spent in the other belts was wonderful,” he said, “because I had the opportunity to enjoy each stage. My sensei [Mario Reis] usually says, ‘Let’s squeeze all the juice this belt can give us!’ I had experiences in all of them, which certainly made me arrive very well prepared in this new stage that’s beginning.”

Murilo ended up beating Osmar Telles (AS Team) via armbar in the Porto Alegre Open’s featherweight final. Here’s how that went:
