International No-Gi challenge brings in new talent

The Taça Rio de Jiu-Jitsu (“Rio Jiu-Jitsu Cup”) organization calls on one and all to fill the stands at the Municipal Club this Sunday in Rio. Besides the matches comprising the championship, where the winners will be included in a raffle for tickets to the IBJJF European Championship 2011, the event will include an international contest.

Foreign athletes face off against up-and-coming Brazilian standouts in no-gi disputes.

“It will be a sideshow. The matched bouts start at noon, followed by the black belt division. The championship also has a lot of foreign athletes from Behring Jiu-Jitsu and Gordo-Evolve. It will be a great spectacle,” announces event organizer Rogério Gavazza.

Check out some of the bouts in the no-gi contest:

70 kg – Ângelo Panoussis (Behring Canada) vs Osvaldo “Queixinho” Augusto (Soul Fighters Rio de Janeiro, No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Brazilian national champion and European runner-up)

70 to 80 kg – Tor Troeng (Gordo-Evolve Suécia – three-time Swiss Open Games winner) vs Marcus Vinicius (DDR  Rio de Janeiro, winner of European Championship and Ranking Rio 2009)

80 to 90 kg – Mad Jack Magee (Gordo Evolve England, winner of Tap Asia No-Gi division) vs João Gabriel (Soul Fighters Rio de Janeiro, Pan-American and Brazilian Nationals champion)

Over 90 kg  – Mike Yackulic (Behring Canadá) vs Eduardo Portela (CheckMat Rio)
