The Rio Fall Open began this Saturday in Rio de Janeiro. Erberth Santos and Beatriz Mesquita each came out with double gold in the gi section.
Erberth of Almeida Jiu-Jitsu won his five matches via submission — two at ultra-heavyweight and three in the open division. In his weight class’ final he beat Agnaldo Silveira, of Gracie Barra, via foot lock. In the open’s final the IBJJF’s No. 1 male defeated Romeu Mendes, of Soul Fighters, with an unexpected choke using the lapel.
“I went in wanting to win every fight by submission,” Erberth told Graciemag.com the same day. “I managed to conclude the first step of the plan and submit every opponent in the gi. Tomorrow there’s the no-gi section; I’m very focused. The level is very high, but thank God I managed to win my weight class and the open for the third straight year.”

Two-time world champion Bia Mesquita scored another double gold for Gracie Humaitá. In the middleweight division she subbed Nivea Moura (Ribeiro JJ) via kimura in the final. In the absolute, she faced in the final the IBJJF’s No. 1 female, Mackenzie Dern. Bia finished Mackenzie with a choke from the back.
