The absolute division at the 2013 installment of the European Championship is the deepest the tournament has ever seen. With Rômulo Barral, Bernardo Faria, Alexander Trans, Rodrigo Cavaca and Igor Silva all in the running, the stage is set for a new open-weight champion of Europe to arise. But the middleweight Claudio Calasans is looking to oust the heavyweights before they can take the throne, when he steps on the mat for the competition lasting from July 24 to 27 in the Portuguese Capital of Lisbon.

“I really want my first IBJJF absolute gold. Who knows, maybe it’ll come in Portugal?” he told GRACIEMAG.com.

“I trained a lot in São José dos Campos and did my physical conditioning with Artur Inoe, who’s renowned in the field. Anyone who knows him knows I won’t be short on gas or strength at the European Open. I’d also like to thank the secretary of sports from my city for the support,” added the black belt, who can be found teaching his tricks in the upcoming issue of GRACIEMAG (click here to subscribe).
