Kayla Harrison attacks Brittney Elkin’s arm at PFL 2. PFL

An atypically eventful Thursday for the MMA aficionado went down yesterday with the hosting of the second edition of the Professional Fighters League (PFL) in Chicago. The event had 13 bouts, beautiful knockouts and two eye-catching submissions.

On the preliminary card, Brazil’s Vinny Magalhães — an ADCC champion and no-gi BJJ world champion — paraded his refined ground game versus Jamie “The Real Deal” Abdallah. Leaving no room for his opponent, Vinny took him to the ground, transitioned to his back and choked him in round 1.

On the main card, in the only women’s superfight, the American Kayla Harrison — a two-time Olympic judo champion people had been dying to see make the move to MMA — faced Brittney Elkin. To many, the comparison to Ronda Rousey was inevitable, and this match did nothing to dispel that notion.

In order to win, Kayla brought the fight to the ground, attacked an arm with her body inverted, spun nicely to get a better lever, and competently finished via armbar.

The main event saw Will Brooks, a former Bellator champion, play conservatively using takedowns and grappling to get a decision win over Luis “Buscapé” Firmino.
