“The mouth is a good Jiu-Jitsu practitioner’s first line of defense”

The latest issue of GRACIEMAG is on its way to a bookstore near you, bringing with it, in the midst of a whirlwind of teachings and tricks for bettering your Jiu-Jitsu, a rare lesson from Grandmaster Carlos Gracie.

“My grandad would say a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner’s first line of defense is his mouth,” our interviewee of the month, Marco Gracie Imperial, the son of Rose Gracie and Carlos Imperial, told us, recounting the lessons he learnt while at his grandfather’s dining room table.

“The mouth serves as your weapon in two ways. First, when someone offends you, you use speech, along with an active mind, tact and well timed soothing words, to dissuade the person from going through with the attack. The second defense also comes from the mouth, since what we put in it either spells our strength or our defeat, in Jiu-Jitsu training and in life,” Marco explains in the FACE TO FACE section.
