Jiu-Jitsu was given a treat this weekend at one of the most thrilling World Championships of the past decade, where the men’s contest is concerned.

There was a flying armbar from Xande Ribeiro (on Roberto Tussa), a standing choke from Alex Ceconi (on Paulo Tarcísio), a twofold retirement from Marcio Pé de Pano and Rodrigo Comprido, a rare defeat from Rodolfo Vieira, a triumphant return from Rômulo Barral and, of course, a rampant Marcus Vinicius Bochecha—winner at weight and open weight at brown belt in 2010, and now at black belt. And there was plenty more, of course.

For example, the outcome of the absolute final, between Bochecha and Léo Nogueira, was determined in the very last seconds, when Bochecha fought through to his second wind and landed a takedown and near mount, turning the tables on advantage points, with the score tied at 6.

It was reminiscent of his win over Rodolfo Vieira on Saturday, which also materialized in the last minute. Take a look at the jubilation of the new absolute champion after dethroning the 2011 open weight king in the quarterfinals of this year’s contest. After landing a hail Mary double-leg takedown, Bochecha still had to defend a fully extended armbar, before celebrating his 8-7 win. What a World Championship.
