Want to teach in Abu Dhabi?

You, Jiu-Jitsu teachers in Brazil, may well be whooping it up at Carnival. Now I don’t mean to interrupt the merriment, but I’ll cut dryly to the chase: job opportunities, and paying good salaries.

I just got off the phone with my friend Lubomir Guedjev, a representative of Palm Sports, an Abu Dhabi company that will be carrying out the teacher selection process tomorrow and the day after (February 22 and 23) in São Paulo and on the 25th and 26th in Rio de Janeiro.

Lubo is flying over to Brazil today along with Brazilians José Junior, otherwise known as “Ciência,” and Perlin Nunes, the delegation’s female representative. They’re enthused about the task at hand: selecting 45 teachers to head Jiu-Jitsu classes at public schools in the United Arab Emirates. There are already 80 teachers over there doing just that.

To help you out, I sought to find out what the interviews will be like, but Lubo was categorical: “I can’t tell you; it’s a wild card I’ll be using. They need to know English and Jiu-Jitsu; the rest they’ll find out when the time comes.”

Despite the veil of secrecy that usually surrounds recruitment, there’s one thing I can tell you up front: you’re not going to need to train with anyone nor demonstrate your techniques in the hotel lobby. It’ll be all on theory, so no need to take your gi. Just show you’re organized by downloading the application and bringing it with you all filled out, with a photo, as well as any certificates or diplomas you may have.

Hint: Use that confidence Jiu-Jitsu bestowed on you starting at white belt all the way to black. And think positive. Your dream of working in the Middle East may be closer to coming true than you may think.
