Checkmat’s black belt Tarcisio Jardim got some really bad news as he was preparing to compete this Sunday at the Brazilian Nationals.

His academy in his home state of Paraíba caught on fire, destroying everything inside.

Even with the devastating news, Jardim was able to compete in Barueri and even reach the podium of the heavyweight division with a bronze medal.

Tarcisio talked to GRACIEMAG about how he got the news and how he intends to rebuild the gym.

“At least no one got injured. My mother lives next door and her house is safe. After all, I’m happy because after such bad news I got a lot of support, with a lot of people offering to help. We’re going to rebuild with the help of all of you and nothing I ever do will be enough to thank all the love I’m getting right now.”
