Ceará State Jiu-Jitsu champion Thiago Maia made his MMA debut last Saturday at Arena Wolf Fight, an event the town of Quixada, in his home state. Maia, who teaches at Owner academy, took on Rômulo Angelim of team Brasa, and after an evenly-matched first round, he went to his Jiu-Jitsu, sinking a second-round armbar to wrap up the action.
Back in his hometown of Fortaleza, Thiago decided to share a reverse omoplata attack to celebrate his triumph. Not how rather than attacking with a clock choke or going to the back, he pulls his opponent’s arm and grabs his hip to then go on and flip him. “If he doesn’t roll with me, you can be sure he’ll tap out. If he rolls, I stick my hand in his face, grab his leg and bring up my hip,” he demonstrates.
In the other fights that went down at the MMA show, Carlos Cyborg of Dragon Fight/Nova União took it to Ruthenilson Hulk, ending the fight with a solid flurry of ground and pound that caused the ref to step in. Another one who came up big was Diego Espartano of Dragon Fight/Nova União, who put away Gildázio Oliveira with a triangle in the first round. Now David Mendes (Semear/V8) went to town in the standup against Willie “Muita Treta” Reis, who failed to return for the second round.
