The Strikeforce organization, through its spokesman/president Scott Coker, confirmed that Fabrício Werdum will not be returning to the fenced-in stage any time soon, probably not until January 2011. The black belt spoke of the operation he will undergo first hand with GRACIEMAG.com, shortly after his win over Fedor Emelianenko (see here).
“I’m going to have surgery on my arm. I have that problem that happens to a lot of boxers, including Anderson (Silva) and Minotouro, which is inflammation of the tendon. I’ve been putting it off for some time and I feel now is the right moment. My arm doesn’t stretch out straight. It hurts a lot, and I’m going to go through with the operation,” he said.
The above statement was made a few days after he overcame Fedor Emelianenko 69 seconds ino the first round of their June fight. It was the third win in a row since the Brazilian signed with Strikeforce.
Two possible matchups have been aired for the Brazilian: one being a rematch against Fedor and the other a heavyweight-title showdown with Alistair Overeem, who the black belt beat at the now-defunct Pride FC promotion back in 2006.
The Southern Brazilian should hold some seminars during his down time, some in Europe, namely Spain, where he has a number of academies.
