GRACIEMAG.com issued the poll to find out which figure from the Jiu-Jitsu world deserved to feature on the cover of our exceedingly prestigious publication. So the people pulled up their gi sleeves and sent in their votes here in the comments section.
Among those most remembers, champions Rafael and Guilherme Mendes, Professor Pedro Sauer, gold medal collector Hannette Staack and the untiring Felipe Costa, 2003’s roosterweight world champion and perhaps the one to travel most “carrying” his Jiu-Jitsu with him in his backpack.
Besides them, Carlson Gracie and aces Demian Maia, Rômulo Barral, Renzo and Daniel Gracie, Jean Jacques Machado, José Aldo, Fabrício Werdum, Roger Gracie, Marcus Bochecha, Gabi Garcia & Luanna Alzuguir, Caio Terra, and many others were also remembered.
The GRACIE publishing team would like to thank the readers for their prompt participation. All the suggestions will be taken into account to pick the upcoming covers for 2011. Stick around, some good surprises are coming up.
I would love to see Hannette Staack and Carlson Gracie on the cover!
Pedro Sauer deserves to be on the cover! Not only is he one of the most dedicated and steady instructors for his age, he is also the kindest and most good hearted guy anyone can meet. He has dedicated his entire life to jiu-jitsu and it is only right that he is put on the cover to be recognized for his lifetime commitment and great passion. PEDRO SAUER
Professor Sauer Deserves the cover. Learning and teaching GJJ for 35 + years and still going strong.
Yo Hannette Staack definitely should be on the cover! Shes an ultra champion both on and off the mat.
Pedro sauer all the way. Never stops his dedication to his students and his own Jiujitsu knowledge. His dedication is lifelong and I’m sure will continue for many years to come.
Prof. Pedro Sauer with out a doubt! His technique is is phenomenal and second to none. He has dedicated his life to helping others with Jiu-jitsu and a big heart.
Hannette Staack has been an inspiration for me both personally and professionally as she moves beyond elite territory in the Women’s (and for that matter Men or Women’s) division domination. I hope to model myself after her and to achieve a portion of the success that she has. I believe that being on the cover will provide a generation of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practicioners with a role model for behavior and lifestyle modifications both on and off the mat. Please put her on the cover!!!
I vote Pedro Sauer
Hannette Staack should be on the cover. She’s one of the most dominant competitors BJJ has ever seen – how has she not been on the cover yet? Shame on Gracie Mag for not yet recognizing her outstanding accomplishments. Beyond that, she is an amazing person and incredible teacher who gives her heart to her students. She is bringing an entirely new world of men, women and children into our sport, and is helping to bring BJJ into the 21st century. Hannette should be on the cover!
Hannette Staack.
Pedro Sauer – Glad to see that Prof. Sauer is getting the recognition that should come to one of the pioneers of U.S. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. We need to remember that he was one of the instructors Rorion called upon to join the family in spreading the word, teaching at the Torrance academy, the infamous Chuck Norris seminars in Las Vegas, and most important, is a black belt under Helio & Rickson Gracie…considered a son to Helio, a brother to Rickson, Rorion and the rest of the brothers and is a clear example of what Helio wanted Gracie Jiu Jitsu to be.
*Don’t forget the lesson he taught Mr. Utah back in 1994, just another example of the Gracie Challenge and amazing self defense!
Hannette is one of the most dominating athletes in the world in her sport. Very few athletes ever reach this elite status anywhere, anytime in any sport. Graciemag should be proud to show the kind of champion and the kind of character that BJJ can produce by putting Hannette Staack on the cover.
Hannette Staack gets my vote. I have trained with Hannette Staack for 2 years now. She is a role model, a champion, one of the best bjj minds in the game, and an all around awesome person. Can’t wait to see her on the cover.
Hannette Staack deserves to be on the cover of Graciemag as much as anyone. She’s helped pave the way for women everywhere in the sport of jiu jitsu. With countless championships under her belt, she’s built a resume as impressive as any man or woman in the sport. Besides her competitive accolades she’s also one of the most genuine, understanding, and kind people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. It’s about time Graciemag showcased what a phenom Hannette Staack is.
An athlete with an impressive career in Jiu-jitsu, and a teacher devoting her life to its cause, sets Hannette Staack as a role model for future generation of Jiu-jitsu aspirants. Having her on the cover of Graciemag would be a tribute to her continuing contribution to this sport and humbly request the editors of this magazine to have her picture on the cover of its next issue.
I think Hannette Stack should be on the cover!!
Hannette Staack gets my vote. She is a role model, bjj phenom, and great person. I have had the pleasure of training with her for 2 years. She is an inspiration to everyone she meets. Her intensity in training and sincerity off the mat make her a rare breed. Can’t wait to see Hannette grace the cover of Gracie mag!!
Hannette Stack of course! Besides the obvious of being a master of BJJ, she is a kind, intelligent, genuine, humble, amazing person!
Hannette Staack. I would love to see Hannette on the cover. She is such a role model for so many. I have had the privilege to train with her for 2 years now. Not only is she a brilliant jiu jitsu mind, but she is a true professional and a wonderful person.
Hannette Staack is one of Bjj competitors that everyone stops to watch when she competes, she is an inspiration to the ever growing women’s Bjj scene. She is the reason my daughters have no doubt they will one day be able to compete at the highest level and be able to take worlds someday. If you ask me anyone that can inspire a 6 & 7 year old to that extreme is deserving of the honor of gracing the cover of Gracie mag.
My vote is to see Hannette Staack on the cover!! Hannette is not only one of the greatest female athletes of all time, she is also an amazing teacher and person. It’s hard to believe she hasn’t been on the cover yet….make it happen!
As I was unable to get my vote submitted in time, I re-submit my previous comment for your consideration:
I whole heartedly nominate Professor Pedro Sauer. Not many can claim not only training with Grandmaster Helio Gracie for many, many year BUT actually LIVING with him in close quarters and being able not only to train with him on a daily basis and absorb technique, but being able to exchange thoughts and philosophy on what GM Helio dreamed of…developed… and left as his legacy.. “JiuJitsu Invisible”. I believe Professor Sauer embodies GM Helio’s JiuJitsu and is a window, (if you will) into what it would have been like to train with GM Helio…No muscle, but technique and an understanding of “yield to win!”
Moreover, his truly genuine love for the art is obvious and infectious. He truly is JIUJITSU all the time. Funny, but knowing Professor Sauer like I do, I am certain he would be the first to say someone else should be on the cover. Thats just the way he his. Humble, despite his otherworldy knowledge and skill. No one could be more worthy.
I would love to see Hannette Staack on the cover! She is inspiration for women in the field of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is a truly unique person! I am honored to have her as my teacher and has constantly inspired me to achieve greatest in every aspects of human endeavor.
I would like To Master Ricardo De la Riva in the, after his 30 years of BJJ he still study and develop the arte suave like any young guy out there, lets remenber some great BJJ and Have De LA in the cover…..Osssssuu
hannette all the way.
especially once she wins pan, worlds and adcc
Hannette Staack is the obvious choice! She exemplifies Jiu-jitsu not only in competition but also her spirit. She is one of if not the most decorated female Jiu-jitsu competitors of all time and it deserves to be recognized on your cover.
Hannette Stack
