Already traditional in California, the 2019 SJJIF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship returned to the Long Beach arena for another grand event, held on November 8, 9 and 10.

With 15 fighting areas assembled and more than 3,000 registered athletes, the tournament has solidified the concept of dispute between nations, with athletes from all over the world, highlighting the large-scale participation of athletes outside the traditional axis of BJJ, such as French Polynesia, as well as delegations from various parts of Asia.

Among the adult black belts, however, the highlights were the Brazilian squad of competitors, with 11 gold medals out of 16 in the gi division and 9 out of 14 in the non-gi categories.

Among the gi highlights are Atos’s Ronaldo Junior, who after taking silver at medium heavyweight, surpassed by Gabriel “Todd” Almeida (Checkmat), came back strong to beat the experienced Otávio Sousa (Gracie Barra) for the heavyweight absolute title. In the lightweight absolute (rooster through light), Isaac Doederlein (Alliance) was supreme; after closing out the featherweight with Kennedy Maciel, he played in the lightweight absolute and beat Pablo Mantovani (Atos) for the gold.

In the no-gi duels, the biggest highlight was Pablo Mantovani, who won not only in the lightweight division, but also won the lightweight absolute, guaranteeing double gold. In the heavyweight absolute, Helton Junior (Alliance) got a do-over after taking silver in the super heavyweight division, getting the title in the open.

In women’s, the big winners were Nina Moura (Atos) and Kendall Reusing (Gracie Barra), who took gold in the gi absolutes, and made up the final of the no-gi absolute, in which Kendall prevailed.
