Se Marcus Vinicius de Almeida e Rodolfo Vieira fossem pilotos de fórmula 1, seus embates já teriam ido parar no cinema, ao estilo de “Rush” e outros filmes do tipo.

Os gigantes da equipe Checkmat e GFTeam se enfrentaram seis vezes, sempre de pano.

Além da diversão e da aula de técnica e destreza naqueles conferes, os dois inspiraram uma multidão de jovens e adultos a vestirem o kimono.

Para “Buchecha”, a história da rivalidade é ainda mais doce e cinematográfica. Afinal, o lutador paulista começou por batucar no braço, na célebre Pirâmide da IBJJF.

O duelo que deu origem à série foi durante a semifinal do absoluto, no Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu de 2011.

A partir dali, o mais pesado Buchecha ajustou seus treinamentos, afiou a mentalidade ao lutar e se tornou um demolidor nos tatames, ainda mais arrasador e vitorioso que o rolo compressor Rodolfo.

“Aquela luta no Mundial 2011, quando o Rodolfo me finalizou, me ensinou que a meia-guarda com ele não funciona. Ele vai passar! Aprendi que aquele jogo nunca vai funcionar com ele. Comecei então a treinar outros tipos de guarda”, diria Marcus.

Os confrontos a seguir foram épicos.

Buchecha 8 x 7 de virada nas quartas do Mundial 2012, talvez a melhor delas – com direito a um bote na chave de braço de tirar o fôlego no fim.

O 4 x 2 na primeira final entre eles, em 2013, no World Pro de Abu Dhabi.

O resultado mais acachapante para Buchecha, o 9 x 0 na final do Mundial 2013, no absoluto.

E os dois encontros derradeiros, duas vezes 2 x 0, em 2014 – primeiro em Abu Dhabi, na final do absoluto no World Pro, e depois na final do Mundial em Long Beach.

Um pouco desmotivado a continuar treinado de kimono e doido para se testar no MMA, Rodolfo Vieira então deixou o caminho aberto para Buchecha decidir o absoluto com outras lendas, como Leandro Lo.

Em meados de 2013, GRACIEMAG teve acesso a um dos dojôs mais bem guardados do planeta, localizado no palácio do xeque faixa-preta Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, o criador do ADCC.

Testemunhamos lá em Abu Dhabi, na capital dos Emirados Árabes, o treino sem kimono com Tahnoon, Renzo Gracie e os irmãos Miyao, convidados vips do príncipe, entre outras feras.

Não fomos autorizados a filmar por muito tempo, mas o que registramos foi ouro puro. Após o treino, Renzo avaliou o jogo dos fenomenais pesos-plumas: “Esses moleques chegam nas costas de tudo que é jeito. Scheduled to take place in the Brazilian city of Balneário Camboriú, the third edition of the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship is shaping up to be even more memorable than its predecessors as it unveils battle after battle ahead of its March 2nd event.

This time around, a duel between guard passer and guard player as powerhouses Bruno Lima and Jansen Gomes go toe-to-toe against each other in the Jiu-Jitsu Main Event.

This middleweight bout (185 lbs or 83.9 kg) between Bruno and Jansen became imminent as Bruno expressed his desire to face Jansen following his recent victory inside the ADXC cage. His request was promptly acknowledged, and now the eagerly anticipated fight is officially underway

An ADGS Rio champion representing Checkmat, Jansen Gomes is widely regarded as one of the most promising athletes of the current generation, making waves even as a colored belt where he conquered important titles such as the ADWPJJC and another Grand Slam.

With his stellar guard passing game and lightning-quick submissions, Jansen comes as a dangerous opponent and a strong contender for victory in the ADXC cage.

Across the battlefield, ADWPJJC and ADXC 2 champion Bruno Lima is back and ready to show his favoritism as he captures yet another high-profile victory for his resumé.

Not much remains to be said about Bruno, as he emerged victorious from the previous ADXC’s Main Event and even went as far as earning the “Performance of the Night” award for his memorable battle against Manuel Ribamar. With his impenetrable game and ability to control the flow of the match in an offensive manner while standing, Bruno is ready to once again take glory with his own hands in the ADXC cage.

The third edition of the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship is scheduled to take place on March 2nd and will mark the tournament’s first venture in foreign waters, landing in Santa Catarina, Brazil. Faixa-preta niteroiense e um dos professores pioneiros no início deste século nos Emirados Árabes, o boa-praça Sid Jacintho nos ensinou outro dia um dos seus macetes favoritos quando fecha a guarda.

Repare na aula, com ajuda de seu amigo Bruno Lopes (Nova União), em como o faixa-preta brasileiro usa a famigerada “manivela” para contorcer o passador e finalizar.

O primeiro passo da técnica é o controle do braço do oponente, como Sid demonstra. Em seguida, o guardeiro escala com fluidez e aprisiona o companheiro e impõe pressão no ombro, o que evita a postura e a escapada. A partir daí, professor Sid Jacintho ergue o quadril com suavidade e enverga o braço do adversário.

The preparations are all set for the second edition of the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship! Scheduled for January 19th, the tournament had fight fans on the edge of their seats even before it actually began, steadily unveiling the explosive grappling and Jiu-Jitsu matches that will make up its Main and Preliminary card. Now, after weeks of build-up, the final duels of the ADXC 2 have finally been revealed.

Alongside AJP, ADXC’s technical partner, the organization put together all 14 matches for its upcoming championship, and now it’s time to analyze the full card that will take over the modern Mubadala Arena and bring about another memorable night in the UAE’s capital. Check out below the card’s details and the full line-up for the ADXC 2!

Main Event

In the first match revealed for the upcoming event and also the very last fight of the night, two UFC athletes will face each other under grappling rules and on a familiar battlefield. Inside the ADXC cage, the Grappling Main Event will be headlined by the former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling and the fierce Chase Hooper. While Sterling poses a very real threat with his versatile game and unorthodox submissions, the younger Hooper doesn’t fall behind and joins the roster extra motivated by the chance to face a former champion of the Ultimate and increase his reputation in the fighting world. Between Sterling’s drive to reassert his dominance and Hooper’s desire to make his name known to the world, this match has the makings of a memorable match that will have fight fans talking for a long time.

Before that, the Jiu-Jitsu Main Event will be led by Portugal’s Bruno Lima and the Brazilian Manuel Ribamar. An ADWPJJC 2023 champion, Lima closed the season with his greatest feat as a black belt, beating the favorite Uanderson Ferreira to take the title, but now he is ready for another challenge and will come to the ADXC cage hungry to take the win. Meanwhile, the experienced Jiu-Jitsu athlete and grappler Ribamar boasts two ADGS gold medals and countless high-profile victories around the world, coming to the Mubadala Arena armed with the knowledge to overcome his opponent and taste victory in the UAE. With both fighters having similar fighting styles, this match-up stands to be a high-octane duel from start to finish.

Co-Main Event

The Grappling Co-Main Event will feature Ffion Davies and Luana Pinheiro in the ADXC cage. Hailing from Wales, Davies is widely regarded as one of the best grapplers around and has the record to back that claim, coming as one of the most dangerous competitors and a strong contender for the win in this battle. On the other hand, Pinheiro has a purple belt in both Jiu-Jitsu and judo, but it’s her experience as a UFC athlete that stands to help the most in this new battleground, as she employs her stamina and experience with gridwork to counter Ffion’s sweeps and submissions.

Moving on, two proficient guard players will go toe-to-toe in the Jiu-Jitsu Co-Main Event. The Argentine Pablo Lavalessi will face Norway’s Espen Mathiesen in a highly technical match where the smallest mistake can bring the duel to an abrupt end. Armed with his deft sweeps, Lavaselli will have to stay sharp as he enters the cage to face Mathiesen, who’ll be ready to use his quick spins and leg grips to take the back and tip the scales in his favor. It’s worth noting that this match is replacing the previously announced bout between Pedro Ramalho and Max Lindblad, as Ramalho could not join the card because of an injury.

Main Card

The Main Card of the ADXC 2 has many thrills in store for the fans, such as the duel between the wrestlers Pouya Rahmani and Denzel Freeman. Rahmani comes with his experience competing in both MMA and Grappling to bring yet another victory to his country of Iran, while Freeman, an American MMA fighter and PFL athlete, comes to the UAE with his arsenal of takedowns and ground control techniques to pump the brakes on his opponent and seize the win. Before that, UFC and Bellator clash as Terrance Mckinney and Sidney Outlaw rise to the ADXC cage. UFC’s McKinney has eight submissions in his MMA career, the same as Outlaw, who fights for Bellator. This won’t be the only time both organizations collide in the ADXC 2, as Brazilian Douglas Lima, from Bellator, and the Russian Rinat Fakhredinov, from the Ultimate, will also be in the Main Card. Lima comes with 33 wins in his MMA record, ten of those coming via submission, while Fakhredinov boasts 21 victories, six by submission, and hasn’t been defeated for the last ten years.

Still in the Main Card, the Bahraini Ali Monfaradi and Brazil’s Talison Costa will don their gis to put on a show at the event. In a rematch after their encounter at the ADWPJJC finals last November, in which Ali rose as the winner and champion, the athletes will once again go toe-to-toe against one another, with Talison hungry to get some payback while Ali aims to use his strong half-guard to defeat his rival once more. Meanwhile, the Brazilian ace Gabriel Sousa faces the Japanese standout Yuta Shimada in a Jiu-Jitsu Bout. Sousa comes as one of the hottest names in his weight division, with powerful performances in recent seasons both in Jiu-Jitsu and grappling. Across the cage, Shimada has been carving a name for himself in the Asian competitive scene for the last couple of years, with many titles earned as a black belt in his homeland, and he now joins the ADXC card to face one of the most challenging battles of his career.

Prelims Card

Kicking off the action at the ADXC 2, the Preliminary Card has a handful of exciting matches to not only warm up the mats but also set the tone for the action that fans can expect for the night. From the duel between the Egyptian Ahmed Amir and the Slovakian Matus Arpas in a Grappling Bout, all the way to the brothers Omar and Mohammed Al Suwadi, who will be facing Shay Montague in Jiu-Jitsu and SeongHyeon Joo in Grappling, respectively. Still in the card, Yara Kakish and Emily Ferreira headline a Jiu-Jitsu bout while the promising newcomers Yaroslav Rymashevkii and Alinus Kuatuly show the talent of the new generation as they lead the very first match of the tournament.

After an extraordinary Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, with over seven thousand athletes competing in the capital of the UAE, the season that began last year finally came to a close. From 2022 to 2023, the AJP made Jiu-Jitsu a highlight around the globe, reaching six continents and historical milestones with its events.

During the last season, the organization welcomed over 123 thousand athletes in its tournaments, which in turn took place in 115 cities across 65 different countries. Fighting for those precious ranking points, competitors left their home countries and broke new ground with AJP, totalizing over 160 nationalities present in our events, proving once and for all how global Jiu-Jitsu has become.

In the sport’s relentless advance through the world’s most prominent capitals and cities, all of which continuously evolve in the competitive scene, AJP has not only met athletes and professors but also new gyms and teams. Over six thousand teams worldwide registered to fight with us, each one ready to fight for glory and the improvement of the martial art.

For our next season, the AJP team is aiming even higher for its numbers, with plans to reach new cities and welcome both newcomers and veterans of the sport, all with a single goal in mind: to tell the world that Jiu-Jitsu will show you your best form and that competition will shape that form into reality.

With less than a week to go before the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship’s debut, the organizers have once again joined hands with AJP, this time to gift fans with an entertaining Fight Week. As the ADXC1 gets ready to take over the Mubadala Arena next Friday, October 20th, Jiu-Jitsu aficionados will have plenty of chances to meet their favorite athletes throughout the week.

Starting on Tuesday, October 17th, the main fighters and coaches will take part in a Meet & Greet at the UAEJJ Fitness, where they’ll be available for photos, autographs, and maybe even a quick chat. After that, the athletes will warm up their bodies for the last time before the event, showing their best moves for the crowd at the open workout.

Moving on to Wednesday, October 18th, the main players of the ADXC1 will sit down for the press conference, where they’ll talk to journalists and fans about their preparations, what they expect from the tournament, and any other questions that come up. Reporters and Jiu-Jitsu connoisseurs will make their way to the Mubadala Arena, eager to hear what their favorite athletes have to say.

On October 19th, one day before the ADXC1 debut, the Mubadala Arena will be all geared up to pick up the pace ahead of the tournament, promoting many attractions at the ADXC Fan Zone. Later on, the stars of the show will face their very first challenge: beating the scales in the Ceremonial Weigh-Ins. Still on Thursday, the most dedicated Jiu-Jitsu athletes will have the chance to take part in a super seminar, led by Atos’ leader André Galvão, and Checkmat’s leader Léo Vieira.

All these attractions lead up to the main course on October 20th, at 8 p.m., as the ADXC1 completely takes over the Mubadala Arena and welcomes the stars of its debut. Raphael Barbosa, brasileiro radicado em Dubai, é um dos principais faixas-pretas propagadores do Jiu-Jitsu nos Emirados Árabes. Praticante de Jiu-Jitsu desde novo e faixa-preta desde 2007, Raphael é o responsável pela metodologia da UFC Gym, no Oriente Médio, há mais de cinco anos. Ele só tem motivos para comemorar o crescimento do seu trabalho – não somente por conta dos resultados – mas pela evolução dos seus alunos.

Recentemente, o time liderado por Raphael e seu professores ficou na quarta colocação no AJP Festival, com um total de 151 academias em disputa. No master, a colocação do time foi no décimo sétimo lugar, mesmo com poucos competidores. Para Raphael, os resultados são apenas o início de algo grandioso para 2023.

“Fazendo uma análise dessa temporada, posso dizer que foi maravilhosa. A gente vem fazendo esse trabalho há seis anos. Nós fizemos algumas mudanças e podemos ver o crescimento da galera que desde a faixa-branca e laranja estão com a gente. Tive alunos em todas as competições conquistando o ouro esse ano. Os brancas também competiram nos festivais e conquistaram suas medalhas de ouro. Nós conseguimos no total 47 medalhas. Se compararmos com o Word Pro do ano passado, nós colocamos no geral 50 alunos e nesta edição que passou colamos 130 alunos. Praticamente, o número que colocamos no ano passado foi quase o número de medalhas que fizemos neste ano. Ficamos em quarto lugar no geral do Festival, sendo que haviam 151 academias. Alguns alunos, apesar da ausência da categoria master, lutaram de adulto no Festival e venceram. No master ficamos em décimo sétimo lugar, mas não tínhamos tantos alunos comparado aos primeiros dias no Festival e mesmo assim conseguimos um excelente resultado”, analisa o professor Raphael. Vale ressaltar que o time terá uma nova safra de atletas na faixa-roxa, isso abre a possibilidade de vencer em outros níveis de faixa nas competições.

Com trabalho a longo prazo, o que já vem gerando números expressivos, Raphael quer aumentar ainda mais o nível das escolas de Jiu-Jitsu da UFC Gym.

“Para a próxima temporada, planejo vir mais forte ainda e com um crescimento para o UFC não só nestas quatro academias que temos, mas para mais duas que estamos abrindo. Vamos vir maiores e mais fortes na próxima temporada. Meu plano é o meu time de professores, quero poder estar mais perto deles para trocarmos experiências e juntos traçarmos estratégias para o desenvolvimento da equipe. Planejo fazer intercâmbio entre as academias, tanto no adulto quanto no infantil. Logo seremos seis academias, então teremos treino duro para todos. Também quero fazer algumas competições dentro da próxima UFC. Já estou ansioso para a próxima temporada”, projeta Raphael, que também é formado em Educação Física pela Universidade da Cidade.
Raphael também planeja voltar a competir, mas vai focar primeiro na evolução dos seus alunos. Ele acredita que ser apenas professor ajudou a polir o progresso de aprendizado deles, aliado ao excelente trabalho de todos os outros professores da rede UFC Gym, que também são direcionados pelo faixa-preta.

“Eu estou com um time de professores de, no máximo, um ano de casa. Então muita coisa tem que ser trabalhada, alinhada e ter todo mundo pensando em um objetivo só. O que percebi foi que eu consegui captar detalhes que quando a gente está treinando, mesmo que com os alunos, a gente não consegue ver. Eu fiquei um pouco de fora dos treinos para ficar observando e dando suporte aos alunos. Eu observava as suas limitações e erros e depois passava um treino específico para cada um. Acho que foi uma lição que ficou para mim. Eu planejo voltar ao cenário de competição, foi uma experiência válida e interessante. Vamos ver”, diz Raphael.

O brasileiro, recentemente, formou mais dois alunos como faixas-pretas. O destaque vai para o romeno Marius Varlan, que é treinado por Raphael desde a faixa-roxa. Seus resultados expressivos foram duas medalhas de prata, conquistadas no World Pro e Ju Jitsu Championship, em Abu Dhabi.

Para a aula de hoje, o professor Pedro Damasceno ensinou o caminho completo para você, caro leitor, sair da guarda até a a montada, com opção de finalizar.

A progressão parte da guarda com o gancho por fora, com o uso das pegadas para tirar a base do oponente antes de raspar. Em seguida, Damasceno usa o peso para amassar por cima e abrir espaço para encaixar o joelho, e ter caminho aberto para montar e finalizar.

For Professor Marcio Silva, the professor is much more than an instructor and coach: he is a brother, father and counselor.

Brazilian black belt based in the United Arab Emirates, Marcio Silva reflected the other day on an essential definition of what it means to teach Jiu-Jitsu. His post, in open letter format, read:

Dear coach / Professor,

Sometimes when you have been asked what you do for a living, you may have received reactions that make you feel less than what you are. Underestimated, and treated as if what you do is not enough. When this happens, remember that you are not “just” a jiu-jitsu teacher.

You are a father, friend, brother, counselor. Your job is not just to teach a martial art. Your work helps children protect themselves from bullying. These same children can meet new ones in a safe place, learn how to interact and make new friends. Women can be able to protect themselves against violence, whether domestic or on the street.

Men who are often insecure and introverted find a way to feel capable, or to go to places where they know that at any time they can use their learning to defend themselves and especially defend their family.

People in general can improve their self-confidence, which may be low because of shyness, health problems, disabilities or maybe feeling out of shape or overweight. These same people will become healthier because of the training and the healthy habits they will be introduced to.

Your students will learn from you and from your knowledge they will become champions, may have a guaranteed job and therefore be able to have a decent life. People of the “best” age (elderly) will find a way to exercise safely and stay healthy. They will keep feeling alive and will know that age ain’t not but a number.
