Currently competing and training in Texas, United States, Matheus Cunha, a Jiu-Jitsu black-belt, discovered a pleasant surprise in the sport. Initially, when he started at 11 years old, his goal was to lose weight, but the identification with that environment made the kid realize that he wanted to go further. Today, at 24 years old, Matheus is improving his technique at 413 Jiu-Jitsu, a team led by athlete and professor Pedro Rocha, which is preparing to assemble the 2025 competition team. Matheus is one of the members of this select group.

After taking his first steps in Jiu-Jitsu as a child with master Roberto Godoi, in Barueri, São Paulo, Matheus’ journey in the sport took another direction after he became a blue-belt, when the first opportunity for sponsorship arose with a trip abroad.

“As a blue-belt, I had the opportunity to be sponsored by Frota Academy, in Switzerland, and I took my first international trip when I was 16. I did a camp in the country and then competed, as a Juvenile, in the IBJJF Euros. It was a great experience.”.

Since then, Matheus’ dedication has given him the chance to broaden his horizons through Jiu-Jitsu. Today, after spending some time in Texas, he feels more mature, but with the same desire to improve as the 16-year-old who visited Switzerland for the sport.

“My routine in the United States consists of training only. I train three to four times a day, varying between physical preparation and Jiu-Jitsu. I’m going to all the Opens here in the country and I intend to do super fights, in addition to participating in the Pans and in the Worlds, Gi and No Gi, IBJJF competitions, and in the AJP Tour Grand Slam, in Dallas.”.

In June of last year, Matheus was promoted to black-belt, beginning a more challenging chapter as a Jiu-Jitsu competitor. The 2025 season has already begun for him. At the end of January, he competed at the IBJJF Dallas Winter Open, Gi and No Gi, a high-performance competition. On that occasion, the black-belt placed well on the podium in both modalities and left the tournament with two silver medals. A warm-up for the promising months to come.

“O Godoi fez e continua fazendo história. Queremos levantar a galera.

Oss!

A respected teacher and fierce competitor, with countless titles in Brazil and abroad, Roberto Godoi has already accumulated more than three decades of a firm commitment to Jiu-Jitsu. The road was long and full of challenges, but the professor, who always liked to test himself, has endured over the years and built his image in parallel with the G13BJJ, a team which he led in Brazil and now leads in american soil, furthering the reach of the gentle art in the US and spreading the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu among its people.

We’ve talked with Godoi and the chat revisited great moments in the teacher’s trajectory, from the first contact with the sport and his first academy to the analysis of his many years as a black belt, including valuable tips for you to successfully walk the path of constant learning in the gentle art.

Check the interview below and learn with Roberto Godoi!

GRACIEMAG: First and foremost: how did your classic nickname, “Jason” come about?

ROBERTO GODOI: (Laughter). That’s a good one. The nickname was born at Waldomiro “Junior” Perez’s academy. I was one of the toughest workouts in the gym and almost always wore a dirty gi that had a rip or two. Despite being young at the time, I also never had much hair, and this all coincided with the success of the films in the series “Friday The 13th”. When Junior was going to separate the training duos, he would say: “Go, you’ll train with Jason!”. But the one who made the nickname stick and led me to embrace it was a good friend of ours, who developed my first patch for the gi; when I saw it, it was a Jason doll in a mask and gi! The younger kids always thought it was awesome, but I never really cared.

You have more than three decades in Jiu-Jitsu, with more than twenty of those years as a black belt. What has been the most memorable experience in all these years?

That’s right, I was promoted to black belt at the end of 1996, and for many years I’ve proudly carried it around my waist. I fondly remember my first fights as a black belt, at the 1997 IBJJF Hawaii Pan. At the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, I got third place at Tijuca Tênis Clube and it was a unique moment. We used to live real adventures, with car caravans leaving São Paulo, crashes in the Serra das Araras, the suffering of weigh-ins the day before… I remember this one time i ran around the gym for three hours and still had to weigh naked to beat the limit and be allowed to fight. We stayed in small fifth-rate hotels, huddled together, sneaking in the middle of the night so the managers wouldn’t notice. These are stories that people hardly believe nowadays.

It’s been more than thirty years competing nonstop. How do you think this constancy in the championships helps you, as a teacher and as a citizen?

Nowadays, as a 47-year-old athlete, my body now recovers from the various injuries I’ve had during that time, and with that comes some limitations, but that’s not going to stop me, at least not now! I’m passionate about that feeling of stepping on the mat, testing myself, listening to the guys saying that so-and-so is in my division and that he’s trained hard to win. It’s these feelings that keep that child’s flame burning inside me, the desire to train similar to when I started in the sport. Competing also makes me a better professional every day – the objective is not to prove anything to anyone but to pursue the continuous evolution and balance of my Jiu-Jitsu, not to mention the improvement of our group as a whole.

It’s that Rickson Gracie quote, studying and learning never end…

Yes, because Jiu-Jitsu evolves and modernizes every year. I know I have a lot to learn and improve; with that, competing and training with my students daily forces me to keep up to date with the latest in our art. Furthermore, championships are great for seeing friends, sharing laughs, expanding our network of contacts, among many other benefits for a teacher.

How did you start training Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-Jitsu came into my life by chance. When I was a kid, the school I went to sometimes had fights, and in my class, there was a kid from Argentina who could hold his own in a brawl. One day, this guy went to Rio de Janeiro for the year’s end and came back shocked. He called me and said: “If you don’t want to be beaten by anyone else in your life, you have to learn what I saw in Rio!”. He had visited a Gracie academy and said that he had been twisted in every way: “Dino (that was my nickname), this is what you need to practice, it’s called Jiu-Jitsu!”.

And was it easy to find a gym in São Paulo?

I learned that Marcelo Behring, who was already a famous champion trained by Rickson, had just arrived in São Paulo in 1988. I went there but the gym was too sought after and the training was expensive, so I couldn’t afford it. I got lucky that my brother came back from the US and gave me a brand new jacket, which I sold for the price of three months of training and got started. It was there that I met Waldomiro, who was Marcelo’s right-hand man and later would be my teacher and great friend.

What was the most memorable fight of your career?

All of them had their valor and brought great learning. But I don’t feel able to summarize in a moment, or personal achievement, my entire trajectory in Jiu-Jitsu. My greatest achievement in the sport was, without a doubt, the number of people and lives I could help improve, not only those who trained with me but their families and friends as well.

Do you still remember your first gym?

I was still a purple belt, in 1992, when, alongside a friend, I decided to set up the first gym I had, in the back of my house. It was small there, with enough room for about 15 students per class, and in the first month we already had 30 students training – and about ten waiting for a vacancy. Today, our G13BJJ school has been structuring itself more and more at the company level and seeking to give full support and feedback to its franchised students and teachers. The structure is unimaginable, comparing it to that gym in the back of the house. Our concern today is to ensure that G13BJJ is seen and recognized as a “martial arts school”, with us fulfiling our role as good educators.

We teach both students who think about competing and those who dream of being an entrepreneur and knowing how to teach and manage their own business one day. Today we have more than 7,000 students in 71 units, 55 of those in Brazil, between São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Tocantins, Bahia, and Santa Catarina. Outside Brazil, there are five in the US and one in Australia.

What tips would you give to succeed in Jiu-Jitsu and reach a black belt?

It is difficult to summarize in a few tips, because there are many variables involved. But I would say number one is discipline, to train constantly and not give up; the second is health – for your machine to work well, take care of it; the third is self-confidence: believe in yourself, and don’t let anyone or anything tell you that you can’t or aren’t capable!

Will effort always beat talent in Jiu-Jitsu?

I’m sure talent without discipline and a lot of effort gets us nowhere. Since I was a kid, I liked to fight, but I’ve always been tougher and more persevering than a talented guy himself. In several of the fights and championships I’ve won, I’ve been successful knowing that to be victorious I would first have to overcome my lack of talent. I’m certainly a tougher guy today because I have that focus and because I know what I’m made of. I always strive to be a better Godoi today than I was yesterday.

One of your strengths is sticking your hand in the collar, standing or on the ground, always triggering a blow… How does this tactic of yours work?

We must first remember that our fight starts standing up before going to the ground, so it is evident that, whether for takedowns, sweeps, or pulling to guard, all positions have their preparations and nuances, especially these details of grips on collars and sleeves to make it happen successfully. Standing, I try to exert my dominant left-hand grip on the opponent’s collar, and when I get it, it opens up a good range of attacks and positions for me, details that I pass on to everyone on our team. But Jiu-Jitsu isn’t always what we want, it’s the opportunities that arise at the time of the fight, so in our routine training at G13, we focus on both our strong game and our weak side, to try to increase the balance and elevate our game.

You’ve done seven MMA fights and started back in 1995. What did you learn about Jiu-Jitsu and about yourself stepping into these rings?

Those were different times, in which it was a natural way to migrate and fall into MMA at some point in their trajectory, even to seek this “validation” of their degree. And with me, it was no different. I learned several lessons in MMA and I am grateful for each experience that today adds to the baggage I have, and so I can contribute to achieving the goals of my athletes, be those professional or not. My dream is to serve as a ramp for all my students to reach much further than me.

You, like many teachers, went through a change of image that is similar to the evolution that took place with Jiu-Jitsu: in the past, it gave a strong image; today, you resemble a father of the students, respectful, cordial to opponents… Is the current Jason a peaceful one?

Yes, it’s a natural maturation of mine as a person, which happened in parallel with the transformation of Jiu-Jitsu’s values as a sport and a lifestyle around the world. I was at the front of a group and was a “master” very early on, and with this immaturity, I had my mistakes, but also my successes. Back then, that was a stereotype stuck in most Jiu-Jitsu fighters, but nowadays I’m better prepared as a person, in every way, to fill my position. I owe much of this to my parents and to what I learned in Jiu-Jitsu, for being this unique tool for emotional balance and rescue of moral values that, practiced daily, shapes us and those around us so that we can have a more harmonious and all-around better society.

In 2001, Godói-Macaco, which had been projected on the São Paulo sports circuit, broke up. What lessons did you learn from the breakup?

Godoi-Macaco in its heyday was unique, and whoever lived that, lived! I won’t take it for granted and am proud of everyone who went there. I don’t mean to besmirch so many others who fought hard for it in SP, but we were one of the main reasons for the rise of Jiu-Jitsu in São Paulo and Brazil at the time. We helped build it in São Paulo and I always believed in myself, I knew my role and value within the team. This was reflected in my self-confidence and total security, which didn’t make me fear the separation or starting from scratch. But that’s the summary of Jiu-Jitsu, the art prepares us to be champions in life. I just focused on work, not listening to the naysayers, because “the dogs bark and the caravan passes by”.

In December, it was ten years since Ryan’s death. What do you think was his importance for Jiu-Jitsu?

Ryan’s loss represented the loss of a great fighter, it was great human material. But Ryan lost to himself. Often the biggest battles we face in our lives are not against face-to-face or physical body opponents that we can physically hit. That’s why the fight is often unequal and why we shouldn’t judge anyone. Controversial or not, he was always an aggregator and was regarded by his students as a natural leader. His coming to SP, regardless of all the “causes”, did contribute to the promotion of Jiu-Jitsu in our state and revealed many athletes and friends which I’ll carry for the rest of my life. Nowadays, they carry his legacy and name around the world.
The post Roberto Godoi recalls his mishaps and victories in Jiu-Jitsu first appeared on Graciemag.

GRACIEMAG

The speed that information travels, thanks to the internet, may be the defining aspect of the era we live in. But alongside content that has relevance and quality, we have witnessed the rise of fake news — and it travels just as fast. In BJJ, as in any other field, fake news can be dangerous, as they spread wrong philosophies or give credit to harmful practices.

So we decided to invite a few teachers to say what, in their opinion, is the biggest piece of fake news about BJJ that they’ve heard. Here are their thoughts.

Fabio Gurgel: “The biggest piece of fake news? Wanting to turn the new generation of BJJ into Nutella. These kids are too tough!”

Roberto Godoi: “The most fun piece of fake news is that one popularized by UFC fans, about Steven Seagal. It was always hilarious to see the movie star give that final ‘polish’ moments before an athlete would go in for a fight.”

Zé Mario Sperry: “The biggest bit of fake news I’ve seen lately in the BJJ community is that athlete that posts a picture with a medal on his chest, boasting — and the title came after just one match, and won by W.O. at that. Brilliant.”

Bernardo Faria: “Tough one, but something that is fake in BJJ is when that higher-ranked guy turns to you and proclaims, ‘Oh, that position doesn’t work.’ I will never agree with that. Maybe that technique doesn’t work for you but fits great in someone else’s game. My half-guard is an example: When I started doing it, I’d let all my opponents arrive on top and gain the underhook, and I heard over and over that I could never let that happen, that it was a mistake… But I’d always end up sweeping everybody from there. In BJJ, there’s no right or wrong, and everything can work, as long as you comprehend the position deeply and know the right time to use that technique.”

Rafael Dallinha: “Fake news in BJJ is the matter of learning only online, without ever having trained on a mat with a real master, and getting promoted even so. I’m not chastising online learning in any way, which presently has many very high-level teachers helping students through this format; but I believe that in-person classes are vital to the total comprehension of the gentle art, its history and its benefits.”

Rolles Gracie: “In this age of fake news, the world of BJJ isn’t free from it. There are many frauds out there teaching in schools or showing techniques on Instagram. The student must watch out, do their research well to avoid getting duped.”

Muzio De Angelis: “Easy one: Fake news in BJJ is saying that Renzo Gracie will retire one day. We all know that Renzo will be fighting until the last day of his life — like, really old. Renzo, my man, you will be doing MMA at 70. Oss!”
The post Poll: What is the biggest bit of fake news in BJJ? first appeared on Graciemag.

A respected teacher and voracious competitor, with many titles conquered in Brazil and abroad, Roberto Godoi has reached the mark of three decades of a firm commitment with BJJ. The road has been long and littered with challenges, but Godoi, who has always liked to test himself, persisted through the years and built up his image alongside G13BJJ, the team he leads.

We talked to Godoi for issue No. 251 of Graciemag, and our chat revisited great moments of his trajectory, from his first contact with BJJ, his first gym, to the analysis of over 20 years as a black-belt, with valuable advice produced along the way.

GRACIEMAG: Firstly, lest we forget: How did your nickname, Jason, come about?

ROBERTO GODOI: [Laughs.] Good one. The nickname was born at Waldomiro “Junior” Perez’s gym. I was among the hardest sparring partners at the gym, and I almost always had on a dirty gi with one rip here and there. Also, from a young age I never had much hair, and all that coincided with the success of the films in the Friday the 13th series. When Junior would split up the sparring sessions, he’d say, “You, you train with Jason!” But the person who really made the nickname catch on, and made me own it, was a great friend of ours who developed my first gi patch. When I saw it, it was a Jason doll in a mask and gi! The younger guys have always loved it, but I myself never cared much one way or the other.

This year you celebrate 30 years of BJJ — 21 as a black-belt. What have you experienced of most memorable in all these years?

Correct. I was promoted black-belt at the end of 1996, and for 21 years I’ve proudly sported it around my waist. In 1997, I fondly remember my first matches as a black-belt, at the IBJJF’s Hawaii Pan. At the BJJ Worlds, I snatched a third place finish at Tijuca Tennis Club — it was an unparalleled moment. We were living true adventures, with caravans leaving from São Paulo by car, crashes at the Araras sierra, the suffering of the weigh-ins the day prior… I remember running for three hours around the gymnasium and still having to weigh in nude to be able to make weight and fight. We stayed at a fifth-rate hotel, all piled up. We’d get in stealthily in the wee hours so management wouldn’t pick up on it. Stories people can barely believe.

It’s been three decades of nearly nonstop competing. How do you think this constancy in tournaments helps you as a teacher and a citizen?

At 43, nowadays my body charges me for the multiple lesions I’ve had through all this time, and from that some limitations derive, but that won’t be the thing to stop me — not now, anyway! I have a passion for that feeling of stepping on the mat, of testing myself, of hearing people saying that so-and-so is in my division and he’s training to win. These are the feelings that keep lit inside me that flame from back when I was a kid, the will to train similarly to when I started out in this sport. Competing also makes me a better professional with each passing day — the search doesn’t lie in proving anything to anyone, but instead in pursuing continual evolution and balance in my jiu-jitsu, not to mention the improvement of our group as a whole.

Studying and learning never ends.

Yes, because BJJ evolves and gets modernized each year. I know I have a lot to learn and improve; thus, competing and training with my students daily forces me to stay up to date with all that’s current in our art. Besides, the championships are great for seeing friends again, having a laugh, amplifying our network of contacts — among other benefits for a teacher.

How did you get started in BJJ?

BJJ entered my life by accident. I was going to a school where there were often fights at dismissal time, and in my class there was an Argentinian boy who was good at fighting. One day this kid went to spend the end of the year in Rio de Janeiro and came back in shock. He called me and said, “If you never want to get beat up by anyone in your life again, you have to learn what I saw in Rio!” The Argentinian kid had visited a Gracie academy and told me he had been twisted every which way. “Dino,” he called me, “what you need to do is this — it’s called jiu-jitsu!”

And was it easy finding a gym in São Paulo?

I heard that Marcelo Behring, who was already a famous champion shaped by Rickson, had just arrived in SP in 1988. I went there, but the gym was popular and training there was expensive — I had no way to pay. I lucked out, because my brother came back from the U.S. and gave me a brand-new jacket. I sold the jacket for the price of three months’ training and got started. That’s where I met Waldomiro, who was Marcelo’s right-hand man and would go on to be my teacher and great friend.

What was the most memorable match of your career?

They all had value and brought some learning with them. But I don’t feel able to sum up into one moment, one personal conquest, all of my trajectory within BJJ. My biggest feat in the sport, no doubt, was the number of people and lives that I have been able to help and improve — not just those who train with me, but their families and people surrounding them as well.

Do you still remember your first school?

I was still a purple-belt in 1992 when I decided, along with a friend, to set up the first gym I ever had, in the back of my house. It was small there; there was room for about 15 students per class, and in the first month we already had 30 students training — and about ten waiting for a spot. Today, our school, G13BJJ, has been being structured more and more on an enterprise level, and it seeks to give all the support and feedback to its students and franchisee teachers. The structure is unimaginable, looking at that gym in the back of my house. Our concern these days is to take care so that G13BJJ is seen and recognized as a “martial arts school,” and our role more and more is that of good educators.

We teach both to students who think of competing and to those who dream of building businesses and of knowing how to teach and manage their own business one day. Today we are more than 7,000 students in 71 units, with 55 units in Brazil spanning São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Tocantins, Bahia and Santa Catarina. Abroad, we have five in the U.S. and one in Australia.

What tips do you have for achieving success in BJJ and reaching the black belt?

It’s hard to summarize in a few tips, because there are many variables involved. But I’d say number one is discipline, to train constantly and not give up; number two is health — in order for your machine to run well, take care of your body –; and third is self-confidence: believe in yourself, and don’t let anything or anybody say you can’t do it.

Will effort always beat out talent in BJJ?

I’m certain that talent without discipline and lots of effort leads nowhere. Since I was a kid I’ve enjoyed fighting, but I’ve always been more tenacious and perseverant than a talented guy per se. In many fights and championships I’ve won, I had success due to knowing that to be victorious, I’d first need to overcome a lack of talent I had. Today, certainly, I’m a tougher guy due to having this focus, for knowing what I’m made of. I’ve always sought to make a bigger effort today to be a better Godoi than yesterday.

One of your fortes is sticking your hand in the collar, whether it’s standing, or on the ground, always setting up an attack right away. How does that method work?

First we must remember that our matches start on the feet before they get to the ground; therefore, it’s evident that whether it’s to throw, sweep or pull guard, all positions have their preparations and nuances, especially these details of grips on collars and sleeves, so they can successfully happen.

Stood up, I strive to exert my dominant southpaw grip on my opponent’s collar, and when I achieve that, it opens up a good range of attacks and positions — details I pass on to everyone on our team. But BJJ is not always what we want, but rather what shows up at the time, so in all our routine training at G13, we focus both our strong game and our deficient side, to try to balance and elevate our game more and more.

You did seven MMA bouts, starting way back in 1995. What did you learn about BJJ and yourself by entering those rings?

Those were totally different times, where it was kind of a natural path to migrate and jump into vale-tudo at some point in your trajectory, even if just to seek that “validation” of your rank. And for me it was no different. I had many lessons within MMA, and I’m grateful for each experience that currently adds to the baggage I possess, and so I can contribute to realize the goals of my athletes, professional or not. My dream is to serve as a ramp for all my students to go much further than I have.

You, like many teachers, went through a change of image that is similar to the evolution that happened to BJJ: you used to give off an image of arrogance; now you resemble a father to your students — respectful, cordial to opponents… Is present-day Jason a man of peace?

Yes. It’s a natural process of maturing as a person, which happened parallel to the transformation of the values of BJJ as a sport and lifestyle the world over. I was the head of a group and was a “master” very early, and with that immaturity I made my mistakes, but also had my good moments. Back then, that was a stereotype attached to the majority of BJJ fighters, but without a doubt, today I’m a much better-prepared person in every way to occupy my position. A good chunk of that I owe my parents and what I learned in BJJ, due to it being this unique tool of emotional balance and rescue of moral values which, when practiced daily, shapes us and those who surround us so we can have a more harmonious, better society.

In 2001, team Godoi-Macaco, which had been achieving good results on the São Paulo circuit, split. What lessons did you get from that?

Godoi-Macaco, in its golden age, was unique, and those who lived through it, lived through it! I don’t spit on the plate I eat out of, and I am proud of everybody who went through there, without belittling so many others who worked really hard back then in SP, but we were one of the biggest actors responsible for the rise of the name “jiu-jitsu” on the map of SP and Brazil at the time. We helped build São Paulo’s jiu-jitsu, and I always believed in me, and I knew my role and value within the team. That was reflected in my self-confidence that made me not fear any breakup or start from scratch that I might need to go through. But that is BJJ in a nutshell; the art prepares us to be a champion in life. I just focused on work, without lending my ear to gossip, because while the dogs may bark, the caravan goes through anyway.

December marked the tenth anniversary of Ryan’s death. What do you think his importance was to BJJ?

The loss of Ryan represented the loss of a great fighter; he was great human material. But Ryan lost to himself. Often, the biggest battles we faces in our lives are not against opponents with physical faces or bodies that we can physically hit. For that reason, the fight is often lopsided, and thus we should not judge anybody. Controversial or not, he was always an aggregator, and considered a natural leader by his students. His move to SP, regardless of all the happenings, did indeed contribute to the development of BJJ in our state, and revealed many athletes and friends that I have for life and who currently carry his legacy and name across the planet.

December is a time for celebration, and few celebrations of BJJ rival this one. With the end of the season, schools across the planet hold graduation ceremonies for hard-working students. For Roberto Godói, of G13, their 2017 event had a special flavor.

Twelve hundred athletes from his team moved up in rank this time. Godói offers an explanation for such scale: “‘A good idea and a minimum of ten years of work to reach success.’ In this case, especially, it’s more than a good idea, but rather a passion. And not ten, but thirty years of BJJ to build this family. Congratulations to all students and teachers involved. Year after year, better each time, bigger and more united.”
The post Roberto Godói holds monster graduation for 1,200 in São Paulo first appeared on Graciemag.
