“Acreditamos no nosso trabalho.

The post O segredo do sucesso de Ana Luiza e Jorjão Fernandes, irmãos campeões no Mundial NoGi first appeared on Graciemag.

The Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship (ADXC) arrives with an impressive card for its debut edition, on October 20th at the Mubadala Arena. The most prominent grappling athletes in the world will step into the cage set up in the center of the gym, with the main fight of the evening featuring two MMA stars who have Jiu-Jitsu as a strong foundation in their careers. In the last bout of the event, black belts Neiman Gracie and Ben Henderson will face each other.

NEIMAN GRACIE vs. BEN HENDERSON – THE MATCHUP

The duel was chosen by the organization to symbolize the strength of grappling and how Jiu-Jitsu transcends traditional competitive environments, leading the gentle art to dominate outside the mats as well. Neiman and Bendo will have the chance to show their technical and submission-focused style in a no-gi superfight, with a ruleset similar to the one used in MMA tournaments, where the points are counted individually in each of the five rounds of three minutes. The battle will be in the welterweight division and closes the event, which will also feature a co-main event and ten more super fights.

Neiman Gracie
Neiman Gracie carries with him the responsibility of representing the most famous family in international Jiu-Jitsu every time he fights. A Jiu-Jitsu black belt, son of master Marcio Stambowsky, Neiman is one of Renzo Gracie’s most dedicated pupils, having gotten a taste for fighting while living on the famous blue mats of his master’s academy, in New York.

An MMA athlete, Neiman is a Bellator fighter and has an impressive record of nine victories by submission, out of the 12 in his resumé, holding the record for most submissions in his weight division. In Jiu-Jitsu, he has appeared on the podium of the most prestigious events with and without the gi. Neiman arrives at ADXC to show not only the strength of the Gracie family in the Abu Dhabi cage but also to prove once again the efficiency of the Jiu-Jitsu that has been his legacy from birth.

Ben Henderson

Ben Henderson is a former UFC and WEC champion, with stints at Bellator and numerous main events throughout his successful MMA career. A wrestling specialist, he has been a Jiu-Jitsu black belt since 2013 and used a lot of his knowledge of the mats in MMA, taking eight of his 30 victories in the cage through submissions, all via the neck with his tight guillotines and rear-naked choke adjustments. After venturing into grappling duels, with and without the gi, Ben Henderson joins the impressive ADXC card to make his debut within the organization, using his Jiu-Jitsu and cage experience in Abu Dhabi.

To further heat up the debut night of the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship (ADXC), the organization included an old rivalry in its gi main event. In a fight in the middleweight division, Isaque Bahiense and Gustavo Batista are once again facing each other, but this time the AJP was able to turn up the rivalry between the champions even more.

The gi duel will take place in the ADCX cage, over five three-minute rounds. Even though the submission can define the winner at any moment of the fight, the score per round, defined by the side judges, will bring even more desire to show their abilities the best they can.

Furthermore, the absence of safety areas or room for escape makes the cage work another factor to be considered in the classic duel between Isaque and Gustavo. Isaque Bahiense, leader and athlete representing DreamArt, arrives to compete against Gustavo with two Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship titles in his career. Gustavo, an elite athlete from Atos Jiu-Jitsu, a team captained by André Galvão, has the notorious AJP King of Mats title on his resumé.

Dueling on the AJP mats, Isaque came out winning twice, in the final of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio in 2017, and at the Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2018. Gustavo, in turn, won the AJP King of Mats title in 2019 by overcoming Isaque in the final match of the event.

ADXC will have 13 fights on its card, with the gi main event between Isaque Bahiense and Gustavo Batista, in addition to the no-gi main event that closes the debut event, featuring MMA stars Neiman Gracie and Ben Henderson. Don’t miss the excitement and great fights scheduled for the event that will revolutionize the world of grappling.
In search of new challenges, after having won a world title in 2019, Matheus Gabriel went up two weight divisions and started competing amongst the middleweights. At the No-Gi Pan, held in May in Texas, the black-belt from Checkmat won his first big no-gi title and, to boot, made his name stand out in a division featuring Hugo Marques (Ares BJJ), Felipinho Cesar (Unity) and Leonardo Silva (GFTeam) — three of the opponents he had to beat on his path to the gold medal.

In the final, he was faced with the extremely tough Hugo Marques and came out victorious by two points from a penalty, because as Matheus was trying to sweep, Hugo escaped to try to defend his position. It’s worth noting that this was among the matches most talked about online, and in a recent interview, the champion explained why.

“The final was a real battle; it was attack against attack,” Matheus said. “He tried to pass my guard, but fortunately I managed to sweep. I climbed the leg and he went outside, which ended up giving me points due to a penalty against him. He got angry, because he thought the ref shouldn’t have given me the points — but it’s the rule! They had posted and talked about this rule days before the event. Anyway, I won! But he didn’t show up at the podium; I thought there was a lack of professionalism from his part. I wouldn’t do that; it was ugly and it’s bad for the sport.”

Photo: Personal archive

Before the final, Matheus finished Michael Trasso via triangle and beat Leo Silva and Felipinho on points. Matheus proved, in practice, that the mass he had gained didn’t slow him down.

“I felt very good fighting at middleweight,” he said. “It was fun and at the same time challenging. Because of the fact that I moved up in weight, the BJJ media talked about it. I felt very good, I felt stronger, and I kept my speed. Fighting new opponents was challenging too, since I had been fighting as a featherweight for a long time. My differentiator in no-gi is to fight moving forward. My guard also helps me a lot. I have a good guard and know that without the gi, it’s very hard to get past the difficulty offered by the fight. I’m excited for my next challenges.”

This being only his second competition in no-gi, Matheus added: “I’m writing my story in the sport. I’m excited about the new possibilities and the visibility that fighting no-gi offers. I want to do superfights, compete in tourneys and show all my potential. Really excited!”

Matheus will be fighting again in June, when new competitions start getting announced.

Brown belt by Checkmat and two-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion, Bárbara Pires is no stranger to the challenges of Jiu-Jitsu and overcome, at the beginning of her career, the rupture of four ligaments in her knee, an injury that resulted in two surgeries and an uncertain window of return to the mats.

Despite the setbacks, she believes that the greater the difficulty, the greater the victory. With this mindset, Barbara gives six tips to help female athletes to adapt better to Jiu-Jitsu and overcome the obstacles of starting in the gentle art. Check it out below!

1. Have your goals defined: “Don’t allow yourself to be unmotivated. When I arrived at the academy saying that I wanted to be a world champion, many people laughed and doubted me. Today I have a solid career as an athlete, became a two-time world champion, and was able to visit places I never imagined, all thanks to Jiu-Jitsu. Determine your goals and fight for them, whether it’s a competition or any other aspect of Jiu-Jitsu.”

2. Enhance your uniform: “The uniform for women goes a little beyond normal. Wear shorts or high-waisted pants under the kimono. It is also important to use a tight top without plastic or metal parts so that it does not hurt you during training. Finally, separate a shirt without a neckline, preferably lycra, to take to the mat. It may sound silly, but you will train more comfortably and protected, allowing you to keep your focus on Jiu-Jitsu.”

3. Haircare: “Hold your hair tight, as it can break a lot depending on how you train. I like to make a high ponytail and then a braid so that the hair is not sticking to the skin, causing it to break less. Avoid clamps or metal fasteners, as they can hurt you and your training colleagues.”

Barbara in action without a gi. Photo: Reproduction

4. Nails and makeup: “Cut your nails so they don’t go past your fingertips. Long nails can hinder your training progress and pose a risk to your colleagues. It is also important to take off your makeup before training, as it will smudge and may end up dirtying the mat and the gi of other students. You can put it back after training.”

5. Choose your team and your teacher wisely: “You must be in a place that makes you comfortable, otherwise it won’t last long. Look for options that are nearby, watch and participate in an experimental class and, mainly, research about your teacher. You must know as much as possible about your future academy so that you can gain confidence to start your journey in Jiu-Jitsu.”

6. Don’t give up: “The start in Jiu-Jitsu can be difficult and even a little frustrating, but persist and you will start to see results. In addition to allowing you to blow off some steam from day-to-day pressures, Jiu-Jitsu stimulates the production of endorphins, gives you the self-confidence of knowing how to defend yourself and, like all physical activity, increases your self-esteem.”
The post Bárbara Pires tips for women beginners in Jiu-Jitsu first appeared on Graciemag.

By Erin Herle

If you were to ask Jiu Jitsu legend Marcelo Garcia how to get better at Jiu Jitsu, he would say to just train. But the greatest of all time, who made his mark on the history of BJJ competition, is an anomaly. People like me, a black belt with over ten years of training and competition experience, will agree that for us normal people, conditioning and injury will bring more success on the mats.

If you’re a competitor, conditioning will help you withstand multiple matches in a day as you move up the bracket to gold. If you’re a hobbyist, conditioning will help you recover faster between training sessions. Either way, conditioning your body to tolerate and withstand specific movements/situations will make the most out of your time on the mats.

The longer I train, the more grateful I am for my body’s ability to evolve and grow. Conditioning and recovery are key for this growth. I’ve compiled a list of goals for conditioning and its importance as well as some equipment from Nogi BJJ Gear that will help you achieve these goals:

Become accustomed to resistance from an opponent’s body weight.

When we train Jiu Jitsu, whether playing guard or passing, we must be able to resist the weight of our opponent. Push and pull are the basic mechanics of Jiu Jitsu so training to do just that can be done outside of the mat.

A sandbag is perfect for resistance training. A bag simulates the resistance from a person’s weight, which is not solid or stable. Think of all the time you’re pushing and pulling within a jiu jitsu roll. Defending your guard, escaping from bottom side control, staying dominant in back mount.

Sand moves within the bag as you lift, swing, squat, and anything else. It imitates the shifting movement of an opponent in BJJ. The workouts you do with a sandbag are full body and can emulate movements you do on the mats. Build up the necessary muscles and joints that facilitate in a specific BJJ move and you can modify for your game and assets/weaknesses.

Gain a solid base for moving and balancing.

Footwork is one of the most underrated aspects of BJJ. I will admit that I struggled with moving my feet in a way that would evade my opponent’s attacks while placing myself in the right position to pass guard. A speed ladder improves speed, precision, and will adapt to the dynamics of passing the guard.

Despite being on the ground for most of the sport, a passer is only as good as his or her footwork. Being able to control grips from the bottom, pass even the trickiest of guards, not giving your opponent your weight, which in turn gives them control of your body and movement. The ladder allows for you to speed up your feet, train complex movements, learn to react quicker to weight distribution issues.

A stability ball can also help with balance and base. All of BJJ on the ground comes from your core. Every limb and appendage is attached to your torso, which keeps you safe and capable of attacking. Nine out of ten times you can find me playing guard in all of my rolls, so my core is essential.

The number one defense I have towards an aggressive passer is to keep my knees tight to my chest. I like to extend my legs only when I am working a specific set up for a sweep or submission and when I feel any danger, I bring my knees back to my chest. In order to have power, using the Stability Workout Ball from Nogi BJJ Gear used for core exercises is perfect for the dynamic movements we do on the mats.

Get a strong grip that will last through full techniques.

Grip is everything when it comes to catching and submitting an opponent. When I won the 2015 Nogi Worlds at brown belt, I relied on my grips to secure my two submissions that won me the gold— toehold and wristlock.

\When sweat joins the grappling equation, it will come down to how long and well you can hold on to your opponent. Wrist strength is important for maintaining posture, breaking grips in the gi and nogi, and techniques that require posting on the mat or your opponent’s body.

So the strength of your hands can determine whether you get the takedown or not, or if you can complete a submission chain to end the match. The BJJ Ultimate Grip Strengthener comes with three different tools: Metal 10-60kg Hand Grips, Hand Grip Exerciser, and the Finger Grip. Don’t let a weak grip prevent you from completing your favorite moves!

Gain more finger dexterity for grips and defense.

The first guard I ever truly used was spider guard. After training extensively with spider guard expert Romulo Barral, I learned to use my feet on the biceps to create distance with my training partners who were all much bigger than me.

Finger dexterity for Jiu Jitsu is essential with guards like spider guard that rely on gi grips. Being able to grip the gi and not have to let go because of fatigue or pain is a flex on the mats.

When you train for a while, calluses form, cartilage gets damaged so bone regrows in a painful process. If you work on your finger dexterity early on, you can forgo the growing pains. The Silicone Finger Gripper from Nogi BJJ Gear can help you with this. Fingers need to have flexibility and strength to modify grips at any time so use a finger strengthener to practice your grips anytime, anywhere.

Rescue your muscles from soreness and tightness.

The foam roller is my best friend. I use it before and after a workout or training session because it warms up my muscles and helps recover faster. It releases the fascia of muscles to allow for more flexibility and elasticity.

The Reflex Foam Roller Set from Nogi BJJ Gear comes with a high density EVA foam roller and two different lacrosse ball sets—one ball and two balls. The roller can be used over major areas like back, legs, shoulders, etc. The lacrosse balls are to be used either leaning against a wall or on the ground. They find the spots of pain or stiffness and get into the smaller spaces of your muscles.

Warming up with this set will help prevent injury during your training sessions and will allow for better movement throughout. Post-workout use will help relieve any late onset muscle soreness.

Where to find these tools

Unless you want to just peruse amazon to find all these, you can save time and go to one place that sells equipment geared for Jiu Jitsu practitioners— Nogi BJJ Gear. It’s a great all-in-one site that lets you purchase training gear and training equipment in one spot.

“Hi, guys; here’s a technique I’ve been doing since I first started training for the 2013 ADCC. It’s a triangle choke from side control. From side control with both knees on the side of his body and the hand to hand grip. First I put his arm on the ground and come with my knee over it. Then I switch the hook on his arm from one leg to the other. After that, I hug his head from behind, lifting it from the ground. As he turns towards me, I jump and pass my leg over his back and lock the triangle with the other leg. Then I adjust the triangle or also I can attack the arm.”
The post Rodolfo Vieira teaches how to get from side control to the triangle first appeared on Graciemag.

And he went on to top the podium both in and out of the gi, with his no-gi heavyweight final versus Ives Sacramento producing a noteworthy play. With his dangerous guard, Diego achieved two sweeps to take a 4–0 lead. Ives then tried to end the match with a foot attack, but it was Diego who got it right with a quick adjustment to spin with the winning foot lock in place.

Exciting battles marked the first day of the Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF No-Gi Championship, held this Saturday in New York.

Local athlete Gordon Ryan of Renzo Gracie Academy did great in the ultra-heavy and absolute divisions. Known for his success in American events where only the submission can determine a winner, the 2015 ADCC champion student under John Danaher showed his effectiveness and kept up his habit of winning without any need for a point count.

In the ultra-heavy division, Ryan bested Max Gimenis (GFTeam) with a rear naked choke. In the open, facing Kaynan Duarte (Atos), Ryan had an uphill battle, trailing his opponent on the scoreboard. At the end of the match, Ryan tied the score as he swept back, and then went for the mount that would give him the win. Refusing to allow the points, Kaynan turned sideways, and Ryan submitted him with another RNC.

Also noteworthy were light featherweight champion João Miyao; Gianni Gripo, who defeated AJ Agazarm in the lightweight final; Marcos Tinoco, the medium heavyweight champion; and Romulo Caju, who beat Thiago Sá to take down the heavyweight division.

Read on for Saturday’s results.
