MIAMI, FL — On Friday, February 6, black belt Leo Gosling of Gracie Barra Davie delivered a masterclass at the IBJJF Miami Winter International Open, securing gold in both the Super-Heavyweight and Open Class Master 3 divisions.

The road to the podium was anything but easy. Gosling opened his campaign with a high-stakes clash against Michael Kingrey, currently ranked third in the world for 2025. By overcoming Kingrey, Gosling paved his way to the top of the super-heavyweight podium.

However, it was in the Absolute (Open Class) division where Gosling’s grit truly shone. His run included a victory over Joshua Garcia, the 2024 No-Gi World Medium-Heavyweight Champion, followed by a grueling match against Thomas Anthony, a powerhouse and multi-time World and Pan-American medalist in the Ultra-Heavyweight category. In the final, Gosling defeated the formidable Rafael Barbosa to seal his double-gold status.

“The level of competition was incredibly high,” Gosling noted, reflecting on the gauntlet he faced. “It was a very tough tournament”. This victory isn’t an outlier but the continuation of a scorching run that began in late 2025. Over the last six months, Gosling has been a fixture on the podium, collecting double gold at the Tampa, New Jersey, and New York Opens, alongside two silver medals in Atlanta. His resume also includes a PBJJF World Championship title, marking 2025-2026 as arguably the finest stretch of his career.

Despite the hardware, Gosling maintains a stoic approach to the sport. His success is built as much on mental fortitude as it is on technical proficiency. “I view results objectively,” Gosling explained. “Victory or defeat doesn’t define who I am; it just shows where I am at that moment. When I win, I keep my feet on the ground. When I lose, I perform a cold analysis: what worked, what didn’t, and what needs adjustment”.

By utilizing visualization and positive internal dialogue, Gosling has mastered the art of the “quick reset,” allowing him to move from the euphoria of a Miami gold to the focus required for his next battle without carrying the weight of the past.
The post Leo Gosling triumphs again: a double-gold performance in Miami first appeared on Graciemag.

“O nível estava altíssimo, na minha primeira luta no evento venci o atual terceiro colocado no Mundial 2025, Michael Kingrey, e fui campeão no superpesado”, conta Gosling.

The post Leo Gosling volta a vencer, agora em Miami first appeared on Graciemag.

The second half of 2025 was special for Jiu-Jitsu professor Leo Gosling, from Gracie Barra Davie. The black belt secured three consecutive titles in both the ultra-heavyweight and absolute divisions. This feat took place at IBJJF Opens in Tampa, New Jersey, and New York, in addition to two runner-up finishes in Atlanta. Leo also became a world champion under the PBJJF federation, consolidating one of the best seasons of his career.

“The absolute final at the Tampa Open was one of the highlights of this journey,” analyzes Gosling. “I faced the great athlete Tarsis de Paula, leader of Elementum Jiu-Jitsu. With deep emotional control and positive visualization, I entered the mats confident and executed exactly the plan I had practiced—a result of a period of great technical and psychological evolution.”

Leo highlights that this performance was only possible thanks to intense training sessions with his master, black belt Rafael Gordinho. “Those training sessions were fundamental for refining my game and strategies. I also want to highlight the daily partnership with Rodrigo ‘Beiço’ Rosa, whose pace and experience were essential in preparation, as well as my partnership of over 15 years with strength and conditioning coach Henrique Brum. The strength training I learned from Brum had a great impact on my recent results.”

Leo ends the year at a high level and remains confident in his pursuit of the IBJJF World title in 2026. We took advantage of the athlete’s great momentum to conduct a revealing interview about the pillars of consistency in competitive Jiu-Jitsu. Check it out below!

GRACIEMAG: How do you emotionally handle the result of a fight or competition?
I view the result very objectively. Victory or defeat doesn’t define who I am, but they show where I am at that moment. When I win, I keep my feet on the ground. When I lose, I perform a cold analysis: what worked, what didn’t work, and what needs to be adjusted. I use a lot of mental control, positive self-talk, and visualization. This helps me flip the switch quickly and stay focused on the next battle without carrying frustration or excessive euphoria.

After a streak of achievements, do you do anything special to stay motivated and avoid complacency?
Yes. I shift the focus from the result to the process. New goals, technical adjustments, small details in the game, and different challenges in training. Also, remembering where I came from and the difficulties I faced keeps me humble and hungry. Victory is not a finish line; it’s just another step.

Injuries can compromise a winning streak, right? How do you shield your body and health?
Injuries are rarely just bad luck. Of course, the risk exists, but I work hard to reduce it. I listen to my body, do strengthening exercises, specific physical preparation, proper recovery, and I know when to take it easy. Training smart is just as important as training hard. Returning home in one piece is part of the long-term strategy.

What tips would you give to someone going through a losing streak?
First: don’t confuse results with personal value. Second: go back to basics. Adjust your fundamentals, routine, diet, rest, and mindset. Often, a defeat is a request for adjustment, not for quitting. And most importantly, surround yourself with people and professors who are honest with you, not just motivational.

When you win a lot, your game becomes predictable. How do you deal with that?
By constantly evolving. I never stick to a single path. Even with a strong game, I am always developing variations, different entries, and new responses. The goal isn’t to hide your game, but to always be one step ahead. Those who only study what you do today will arrive late tomorrow.
The post After a victorious season, Leo Gosling reveals the secrets to consistency in Jiu-Jitsu first appeared on Graciemag.

Confira a seguir!

Evoluindo constantemente. Eu nunca me apego a um único caminho.
The post Após temporada vitoriosa, Leo Gosling revela os segredos da consistência no Jiu-Jitsu first appeared on Graciemag.

“A great coach needs to be constantly updating their knowledge, studying, and most importantly, inspiring. More than just teaching techniques, you have to make the student fall in love with the process—with the competition, the learning, and their personal evolution. When an athlete discovers their ‘why,’ everything changes. The rest is just a consequence,” teaches the black belt Leo Gosling.

In the following exclusive interview, the professor recalls how a fighter’s mentality helped him overcome a serious car accident. He also discusses the art of transforming average students into great champions, among other compelling topics. Check it out! Oss!

The word ‘overcoming’ has a special meaning in your Jiu-Jitsu journey, doesn’t it?
LEO GOSLING: Yes, it does. On March 1st, 2024, a truck hit the back of my car, and my neck suffered a major impact. I had to interrupt my winning streak in Jiu-Jitsu, which was one of the most difficult moments of my career. At the time, I was the No. 1 ranked athlete in the world by the IBJJF in the Master 2 Super Heavyweight division. Despite the setback, I tried to face the challenge with the same mentality I learned on the mats: never give up. I kept my focus on rehabilitation, following my treatment plan with discipline and faith, applying the same dedication I always brought to training. On October 26th of this year, I returned to competition and won the PBJJF World Champion title. It was a victory with a special flavor—not just for the medal, but for what it represented: a true comeback story.

You have coached several Jiu-Jitsu champions. What is the secret to transforming an average athlete into a major winner?
I believe the secret is understanding the human side of the athlete; everyone has their own timing, their purpose, and their difficulties. Here at Gracie Barra Davie, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing this happen many times. Students like Troy Trocher, 12 years old, 2023 Pan-American Champion gray belt; Gavin Flores, 12 years old, 2024 Gi Pan-American Champion yellow belt; Camila Estrada, 2005 No-Gi Pan-American Champion; and also my sons Maui and Kauai Gosling, who were multiple-time podium finishers at the Pan-Ams, are all examples of dedication, discipline, and love for the sport. I try to teach more than just techniques; I try to pass on values, responsibility, and confidence. When the student understands that, the results come naturally.

What benefits does a Jiu-Jitsu professor offer to individuals and the community they serve?
As a professor and a father of three children, I believe that Jiu-Jitsu goes far beyond the mats. It shapes better citizens. It teaches respect, discipline, self-control, and humility—values that make all the difference inside and outside the academy. Many students arrive shy, insecure, or dealing with personal issues, and over time, Jiu-Jitsu transforms these people. Seeing young people who might otherwise be on the streets become athletes, professors, parents, and good examples for the community is the greatest award a teacher can receive.

What have been your main achievements in Jiu-Jitsu, and what do they mean to you?
I would highlight the gold medal at the Pan-Ams and the North American Championships (both in my weight class and the absolute division). Multiple titles in Opens (weight and absolute). Now, with the PBJJF, I am a World Champion. Each conquest has a different meaning. For me, more important than the medal itself is what it represents: effort, faith, and consistency. These are the results of a lifetime dedicated to the gentle art and to the people who believe in this path alongside me.

What is your main goal for the future of your career?
My goal is to continue evolving, as an athlete, a professor, and a human being. I want to win the IBJJF World title in both my category and the absolute division, but I also want to form champions on and off the mats. I want my students to become good examples, to inspire others, and to multiply the values that Jiu-Jitsu teaches. The most important victory is seeing the positive impact this art can have on people’s lives.

When someone hesitates to train Jiu-Jitsu, what do you usually say to convince them to put on the kimono and start the journey in the gentle art?
I usually say that it is frustrating not knowing how to protect yourself, your family, or someone you love. But Jiu-Jitsu is much more than self-defense. It brings health, self-confidence, emotional balance, and even new friends. Training is a way to connect with the best version of yourself. And when you allow yourself to take that first step, the rest is a transformation.

Who are your biggest idols in BJJ?
Renato Ferro, my master forever, a world champion at brown belt and an example of character, simplicity, and loyalty. Rafael “Gordinho,” my friend and current master here in the US, who inspires me with his modern and human vision of Jiu-Jitsu. Roger Gracie, with whom I had the privilege of training since my brown belt days and closely following different phases of his career, including recently at Start Jiu-Jitsu, under Master Gordinho in Pembroke Pines. These are the references that have shaped not only my Jiu-Jitsu but also my way of living.

What advice would you give to young people who dream of making a living from Jiu-Jitsu?
Never abandon your studies. If necessary, slow down the pace of your training, but never stop studying. Education opens doors that Jiu-Jitsu alone cannot. Be loyal to your masters, respect the hierarchy, and honor those who believe in you. And remember: success is a consequence of dedication, patience, and love for what you do.
The post Jiu-Jitsu lessons by Professor Leo Gosling first appeared on Graciemag.

LEO GOSLING: Sim.

The post Lições de Jiu-Jitsu do professor e campeão Leo Gosling first appeared on Graciemag.
