The 2014 IBJJF New York Summer Open on Saturday, July 19 brought some tough black belts into the Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of City College of New York.

The double-gold athlete of the day went to, again, Gianni Grippo of Alliance Marcelo Garcia. Other names like Rodrigo Freitas and Vitor Oliveira were present to show their skills between the big tournaments.

Here are the results of the black belt division finals:

Rooster: David Zennario of Vicente Jr. Team had no other competitors.
Light-feather:  John Cho of Alliance NYC defeated  Sidemar Honorio of Renzo Gracie by 4-2 points.
Feather: Edson Oliveira of Barbosa Equipe defeated Joseph Taliercio of Renzo Gracie.
Light: Gianni Grippo of Alliance Marcelo Garcia defeated Rodrigo Freitas of Gracie Barra by 2 points.
Middle: Vitor Oliveira of GFTeam defeated Fletcher Linton of Maxercise by armbar.
Medium-heavy: Antonio Antonioli of Atos defeated Vinicius Silva of Team Link by armbar.
Heavy: Vitor Toledo of Atos defeated Thomas Johannessen of Frontline Academy by armbar.
Super-heavy: Lincoln Pereira of Renzo Gracie defeated Rodrigo Reis of Tanque Jiu-Jitsu by toehold.
Ultra-heavy: Kenny Brown of Team Lloyd Irvin defeated Tiago Ribeiro of Team Giraffe Academy by ezekiel.

The one-day tournament will feature competitors from white to black. Black belts compete at 1:40 p.m. so catch the high-level matches between athletes like Rodrigo Freitas, Vitor Oliveira, Gianni Grippo, Antonio Antonioli, Eliot Kelly and more.

The 2014 IBJJF New York Spring Open brought top black belts to the Nat Holman Gymnasium on the City College of New York campus. While some divisions only had one athlete, the absolute category brought those hungry athletes together.

Here are the results of each weight division and the absolute division:

ROOSTER

Washington Lima of GF Team defaulted gold as the only athlete registered.

LIGHT-FEATHER

Daniel Beleza of SAS Team defeated Mark Ramos of Ricardo “Rey” Diogo BJJ by one advantage earning him the gold as they were the only two in the division. The match was similar to their match at the Boston Spring Open only one week prior. Beleza jumped guard and Ramos worked his passing but also tried multiple times to leg drag and take the back. Beleza’s omoplata and sweep attempts gave him the advantage over Ramos for the gold.

FEATHER

Even though there were two athletes, Gianni Grippo of Alliance Marcelo Garcia defaulted gold as he was the only one to show.

LIGHT

Bricklin Welch of Team Redzovic defeated Diogo Almeida of Gracie Barra by armbar.
AJ Agazarm’s opponent in the bracket did not compete and so he went straight to the final against Brick. The match began with AJ going for a takedown and Brick defending enough to pull guard and go for a straight armbar. AJ defended even as Brick went “belly-down” to try and submit. Brick transitioned to an omoplata and swept to get on top and earn two points but AJ got out of the submission. AJ was able to utilize his top game well as he passed the guard three times, secured knee on belly and mounted at the end for a total of 15 points for Brick’s 2.

MIDDLE

There were only two athletes in this division but the skill level made this immediate final one to watch. Former teammates JT Torres, now of Atos Jiu-Jitsu, and DJ Jackson of Team Lloyd Irvin faced off for the gold. When the match began, JT jumped guard. A majority of the match had JT securing DJ in closed guard, opening for opportunities to submit or sweep. DJ also worked to pass, pushing for top half but at the end of the match the decision was left to the referees to decide and JT earned the gold.

MEDIUM-HEAVY

No athletes.

HEAVYWEIGHT

In the first match, Antonio Antonioli of Atos Jiu-Jitsu faced Fernando Moya of Renzo Gracie and an armbar secured the win for Antonio. He moved on to the final and faced Lincoln Pereira of Renzo Gracie. Lincoln jumped guard and not long after locked up a no-arm triangle for the gold medal.

SUPER-HEAVYWEIGHT

Tiago Almeida of Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu defaulted gold as the only athlete registered.

ULTRA-HEAVYWEIGHT

Diego Santana of Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu defaulted gold as the only athlete registered.

OPEN WEIGHT

AJ Agazarm defeated Washington Lima by choke,
Antonio Antonioli defeated Diego Santana by armbar.
Gianni Grippo defeated Diogo Almeida by 13-2 points.
Tiago Almeida defeated DJ Jackson by choke.

SEMI-FINAL

AJ Agazarm defeated Antonio Antonioli by 13-6 points.
Gianni Grippo defeated Tiago Almeida by two advantages.

FINAL

Gianni Grippo defeated AJ Agazarm by pulling guard, berimbolo-ing to the back and winning 4-0 points.

FEMALE

Nyjah Easton of Team Lloyd Irvin was the big winner as she defeated her only opponent, Bibiana Silva of inUFC Gym Stamford, in the lightweight division by kimura. The open weight division was a round robin with three females: Nyjah Easton, Bibiana Silva and Karen Peterson of Clockwork Jiu-Jitsu who defeated her opponent Jennifer Russell of Renzo Gracie in the medium-heavyweight division.

Nyjah defeated Bibiana in the first match, technically a semi-final by armbar.
Karen defeated Bibiana in the other semi-final by triangle armbar.

In the final, Nyjah aggressively pulled guard on Karen and was able to sweep right away. She passed as she came up and submitted Karen with a lapel choke from there.

The black belt adult open weight division at the 2014 IBJJF Boston Spring Open held five athletes:

Lightweight Renan Borges of BTT
Lightweight Gianni Grippo of Alliance Marcelo Garcia
Middleweight Vinicius Silva of Team Link
Medium-heavyweight Jarod Lawton of New England United BJJ
Heavyweight Antonio Antonioli of Atos Jiu-Jitsu

The first match was Renan Borges against Vinicius Silva. Renan was able to secure a the back and a bow and arrow choke ensued from there moving him tot he semi-finals.

Antonio Antonioli had a bye and stepped into the semi-final. Renan pulled guard and after Antonio moved towards north south, he did not get around Renan’s inverted guard. Renan came up with an arm drag and earned an advantage since the referee called stop as they went out of bounds. Renan pulled guard again and then was able to secure a sweep off of x-guard and win the match 2-0 points.

The next match was on the other side of the bracket as Gianni Grippo faced Jarod Lawton. Gianni pulled guard and as Jarod attempted to pass Gianni swept. Jarod reciprocated with a sweep of his own. Gianni came up in a leg drag position to earn two points for a sweep and as he went to secure a pass, Jarod was able to stand. Gianni pulled guard once again and swept into 50-50 position and came up on top to earn another two points for the sweep. The match ended as Jarod attempted to attack the feet. The end score was 6-2 and Gianni earned his place in the final.

The final match began with a double-guard pull between Renan and Gianni. They were called for stalling since neither came up on top. Finally Renan sat up to pass and there were more stalling calls for inactivity. Renan tried for various passes with double-unders, over-unders and more but the lasso and spider guard of Gianni prevented any passes. Near the very end of the match Gianni was able to secure a berimbolo position and came up on top with a leg drag and took the back. Before he secured the hooks, he grabbed the lapel and submitted Renan with a bow and arrow choke.

There was a limited number of participants leaving some divisions empty but only because the top talent shown were combined in other weights.

Mark Ramos of Ricardo “Rey” Diogo BJJ faced Bruno Braz of Kimura BJJ in the first round and won via bow and arrow choke.

Gustavo Carpio of Marra Senki defeated Washington Lima of GF Team by 6-0 in points.

Mark Ramos defeated Daniel Beleza of SAS Team by referee decision.

In the final, Gustavo Carpio and Mark Ramos engaged in a technical sweep battle with Carpio using his spider guard to get on top. Mark would reciprocated with his own creative means whether it be from x-guard or going inverted to take the back. The end score was 6-6 but the advantages were 4-0 in Carpio’s favor as he went for multiple omoplatas.

NO FEATHER

LIGHT

Bricklin Welch of Redzovic International defeated Diogo Almeida of Renzo Gracie by straight ankle lock.

Gianni Grippo of Alliance Marcelo Garcia defeated Rafael Costa of Renzo Gracie by bow and arrow choke.

Renan Borges of BTT defeated Bricklin Welch by lapel choke from side control.

In the final, Gianni Grippo and Renan Borges played a stalemate game with Gianni in guard and Renan working to pass. Gianni used spider and the lasso and worked to take the back as well while Renan worked an over-under type pass and tried to stuff Gianni’s bottom leg repeatedly. The decision was in favor of Gianni for the gold.

MIDDLE

Bruno Fernandes of Gracie Barra Montreal defeated Alex Aristides of Serra BJJ Academy by lapel choke from side control.

Rafael Barbosa was in the bracket but did not fight and so Vinicius Silva of Team Link received a bye to the final.

In the final, Bruno worked his guard and his passing against Vinicius who recovered a few times. The match ended with 10-0 in points in Bruno’s favor earning him the gold.

MEDIUM-HEAVYWEIGHT

Gregor Gracie did not compete so the bracket went straight to the final.

In the final, Abmar Barbosa of Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu and Jarod Lawton of New England United BJJ switched off playing bottom and passing. Abmar worked his guard and attempted an armbar but Jarod evaded the submission. Then Abmar swept into mount and Jarod recovered. The match ended after Abmar swept from his guard. The match ended 8-0 in points for Abmar Barbosa.

HEAVYWEIGHT

The only two athletes were Antonio Antonioli of Atos Jiu-Jitsu and Leandro Soares Martins of Martins Jiu-Jitsu Team so it went straight to the final.

In the final, Antonio jumped guard and while Leandro worked to pass, Antonio broke the posture with a grip on Leandro’s belt and attacked the arm. Using his fundamentals Antonio was able to submit with the armbar for the gold.

Boston Spring Open

The IBJJF has released the schedule for the 2014 Boston Spring Open.

The event takes place this Saturday, April 5, at the Umass Athletics.

This year’s edition will feature famous black belts such as Daniel Beleza, Gianni Grippo, Gustavo Carpio, Renan Borges, Abmar Barbosa, Gregor Gracie, Antonio Antonioli, Rafael Barbosa.
