A Carlson Gracie black belt, Renato Tavares is our GMA at ATT Vero Beach, in Florida. In GRACIEMAG 171, at a bookstore near you, the professor conveys ten pointers essential to Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. If these are not assimilated at white belt, it could limit the quality of an athlete’s technique down the road.

Hip movement, for instance, is one of them:

“Ask your master to explain the importance of hip movement and how to use it in different situations. The hip is put to use at all times when executing Jiu-Jitsu positions, whether in replacing guard or even in carrying out submission holds. It would be a good idea to do daily repetitions to improve on this facet of the game,” explains Renato.

And since we’re on the subject of movement, Tavares, who is also a physical education teacher, in the video below teaches some neat exercises to use for Jiu-Jitsu: lifting, balance and movement.
