Tricampeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu e 11 vezes campeão do One, Bibiano Fernandes é um dos maiores lutadores já produzidos em Manaus, no Amazonas. O faixa-preta tem uma carreira sólida no MMA com 24 vitórias, sendo por finalização, em 30 lutas.

Pela IBJJF, maior órgão de Jiu-Jitsu do mundo, Bibiano foi um dos pesos plumas mais dominantes do cenário entre 2003 e 2006. O manauara relembra com carinho as grandes conquistas da carreira.

“Eu dominei essa categoria por muito tempo porque eu sou muito disciplinado. Sempre foquei nos meus objetivos, treinei bastante, de manhã, de tarde, de noite… E amo o Jiu-Jitsu e queria vencer, evoluir, chegar no topo. Esse foi meu segredo para o sucesso. Eu cheguei onde estou hoje por causa da disciplina”, reflete Bibi, hoje com 42 anos.

Já consagrado nos esportes de combate, Bibiano agora vê que a transição do Jiu-Jitsu e grappling está passando por uma evolução profissional. No One, organização asiática de MMA, o grappling tem o mesmo destaque que outras artes. Os atletas, oriundos do Jiu-Jitsu, faturam alto sem precisar trocar socos.

“O esporte evoluiu bastante! O Jiu-Jitsu e o MMA estão cada vez mais profissionais. Ninguém assistia Jiu-Jitsu, e hoje quando você vai em um evento está lotado. Você percebe que está em nível muito profissional. As coisas estão acontecendo, o esporte agora está passando até na TV”, comenta o campeão.

Os americanos Kade Ruotolo e Mikey Musumeci são os campeões de grappling do One. Para Bibis, eles são as novas estrelas do esporte.

“Os atletas evoluíram bastante. Vejo o André Galvão, na Califórnia e o Mike Musumeci na Ásia. Eles são pessoa que se dedicaram bastante e agora estão colhendo os frutos, são profissionais no que fazem, começaram pequeno e agarraram as oportunidades, esse é o segredo. Tem muito moleque bom que eu acompanho e que podem bater de frente, o Mica Galvão, Kade Ruotolo, e outros. O caminho é acreditar no esporte e ter constância para alcançar seus objetivos”, encerra Bibiano.

Tetracampeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, Mikey Musumeci adicionou mais um feito histórico na carreira. O americano derrotou o brasileiro Cleber Clandestino por decisão unânime e conquistou o primeiro cinturão peso-mosca de grappling do One Championship, disputado na última sexta-feira, em Singapura. Além do título, Musumeci garantiu o prêmio de 50 mil dólares (R$ 258 mil na cotação atual) pela performance na luta co-principal do One on Prime Video 2: Xiong x Lee III.

Musumeci provou que está adaptado ao grappling e desempatou a trilogia contra Clandestino sem deixar o rival tomar as rédeas do duelo. Apesar de ter puxado para a guarda logo nos segundos iniciais, o americano tomou a iniciativa a buscou ataques na chave de calcanhar quando o brasileiro dava alguma brecha. Mikey foi incisivo por baixo e neutralizou as ações do oponente. Clandestino apostou em transições rápidas para tentar passar a guarda, mas Musumeci conteve o ímpeto do brasileiro com maestria.

O combate ganhou doses de emoção conforme o decorrer do relógio. Com o resultado indefinido, ambos os lutadores adotaram postura ofensiva em busca da finalização. E foi o americano quem chegou mais perto de conseguir a submissão. Musumeci encaixou uma chave de calcanhar e impôs muita pressão. No entanto, Clandestino girou e conseguiu defender o poderoso ataque do adversário. Após 10 minutos eletrizantes, Musumeci levou a melhor de forma unânime da decisão dos árbitros.

Na luta principal do evento, a chinesa Xiong Jing derrotou Angela Lee por decisão unânime e manteve o cinturão peso-palha feminino da organização. Com o resultado, Xiong chegou a dois triunfos em três embates diante de Hill, detentora do título peso-átomo do One.

A chinesa apresentou um boxe bem alinhado, controlou a distância e dominou as principais da luta. Por pouco, Jing não liquidou a fatura no primeiro round. Xiong conectou golpes duros, apertou o passo e derrubou a adversária ao impor volume avassalador na trocação. Porém, Hill tentou uma queda e freou o ímpeto da adversária. Dominante do começo ao fim, Jing praticamente não foi ameaçada e construiu a vitória com certa tranquilidade.

O One Championship está investindo alto no grappling e no Jiu-Jitsu, e se prepara para conhecer seu primeiro detentor de cinturão, nesta sexta 30 de setembro.

O duelo será entre o craque brasileiro Cleber “Clandestino” Sousa contra o americano campeão mundial pela IBJJF Mikey Musumeci, pelo título peso-mosca. O embate será uma espécie de desempate, já que os dois já se enfrentaram em duas oportunidades, com uma vitória para cada.

“Lutamos pela primeira vez no Pan de 2017. Empatamos no tempo normal e o árbitro me deu a vitória”, recorda Clandestino. “Eu estava nervoso e ao mesmo tempo ansioso, mas lutei para a frente, atacando muito e defendendo todos os ataques dele. Na segunda vez, no World Pro em Abu Dhabi, também em 2017, ele me ganhou por pontos. Agora teremos o desfecho da trilogia. Estou me dedicando muito aos treinos e sei que sou merecedor. Acho que não tem como dizer quem tem o melhor Jiu-Jitsu, pois cada um tem o seu estilo e estratégia. Ainda mais na faixa-preta, onde nível é sempre muito alto e as lutas costumam ser decididas no detalhe”.

A derrota para o brasileiro foi a última do fenômeno americano no peso-pluma. No mesmo ano em que enfrentou Cleber em duas oportunidades, ele conquistou o seu primeiro título mundial na faixa-preta, e repetiu o feito em 2018, 2019 e 2021 (em 2020 o Mundial não foi realizado em razão da pandemia). Musumeci acredita que a derrota para o brasileiro foi a grande virada de chave da sua carreira.

“Aquela derrota me ajudou muito. E eu sou grato por isso. Sou grato ao Cleber. Eu competi com ele no mês seguinte e venci. Após a vitória eu fui até ele e disse: ‘Ei obrigado pela luta no mês passado. Você me venceu, e agora eu venci você, então nós dois estamos ajudando um ao outro a melhorar’. É por isso que eu gosto de competir, ganhando ou perdendo. Estou apenas trabalhando para melhorar e ele me ajudou a chegar a outro nível no Jiu-Jitsu”, declarou Musumeci.

Cinco anos após o primeiro duelo, os dois terão muito mais do que a chance de desempatar o confronto. O cinturão do One Championship pode levá-los a outro nível no esporte, uma vez que o evento é transmitido em mais de 150 países e, em 2021, bateu recorde de visualizações orgânicas em suas mídias sociais. Foram mais de 13,8 bilhões de visualizações ao somar Facebook, Instagram, YouTube e Tik Tok. Além disso, o evento desta sexta-feira será exibido pela plataforma da Amazon Prime nos Estados Unidos.

“Sem dúvida, conquistar esse título seria o auge da minha carreira e mudaria a minha vida profissional e pessoal. Depois de tudo o que passei na vida, seria a realização de um sonho”, avaliou Cleber.

“Essa luta vai ser a maior de toda a minha carreira no Jiu-Jitsu”, reforçou Musumeci. “Será a primeira luta da história pelo cinturão do One no grappling, será um título de enorme prestígio para um lutador de Jiu-Jitsu e estou muito honrado e animado por fazer parte disso”.

Para falar sobre uma das posições mais controversas da atualidade, GRACIEMAG escalou dois especialistas no assunto. Caio Terra, bicampeão mundial, reconhecido tanto como competidor quanto como técnico de grandes craques, e Mikey Musumeci, primeiro americano bicampeão mundial na faixa-preta e um amante da posição em questão. Nós estamos falando do polêmico berimbolo.

Visto em todos os campeonatos tempos atrás, da faixa-branca até a faixa-preta, o movimento de rolar e pegar as costas a partir da guarda de la riva se tornou figurinha difícil nos torneios, principalmente em alto nível. Muitas defesas, contra-ataques e opções para inutilizar o golpe surgiram na evolução do esporte, e nomes famosos como Keennan Cornelius disseram que a posição estava com os dias contados.

Para Mikey e Caio, porém, a posição segue bem efetiva, com os ajustes corretos e confiança na movimentação. Vale ressaltar que muitas posições básicas, que são estudadas e treinadas incessantemente desde o início no Jiu-Jitsu, podem ser funcionais em qualquer situação, desde que sejam executadas de forma perfeita. Então, por que não aprimorar o berimbolo?

Foi por isso que a equipe de GRACIEMAG procurou Caio e Mikye, e após uma extensa conversa à beira da praia de Copacabana, resolveu gravar três posições no tema: um ataque justo com o berimbolo para as costas, uma defesa deste ataque, e um contra-ataque para avançar contra o adversário que defende o berimbolo.

Young Mikey Musumeci is on a roll. With just one loss in 2016, he landed in Portugal confident in being able to snag one of the few titles that still elude him. The European BJJ Championship, scheduled to start Jan. 18 in Odivelas, is among the three most important IBJJF competitions, and Musumeci knows it very well.

“This is my first time leaving the USA,” he tells Graciemag via email. “I am very happy and excited for this opportunity to compete in Portugal! This division is stacked, and it is going to be awesome! The mindset is every competition I do leading up to the Worlds is to prepare for the Worlds, so the tougher the competition the better! I just want to keep learning and improving. Very happy and excited!”

Enrolled as a light featherweight, Musumeci may butt heads against an old rival — João Miyao. There have been four duels so far, all won by Musumeci.

“The rivalry between João and me is so awesome,” Musumeci writes. “We both keep pushing each other to learn and improve, and making each other better competitors, which is what competition is about! We fight so much, I see it as we are teammates in the gym training. I have the utmost respect for João!”

Like Miyao, Musumeci has in the berimbolo his strongest weapon, leading to fascinating matches:

“I think the biggest thing is to understand the berimbolo game and what positions effect it the most. I do all the same positions and know the same positions, so we both know what is annoying to each other, and that’s what makes every match so interesting!”

Black belt world championship

The year has barely begun, but Mikey’s recent performances have made him a clear candidate to become only the third-ever non-Brazilian to win a black belt world title. Since 1996, the two who have succeeded are BJ Penn and Rafael Lovato Jr.

“First of all, my jiu-jitsu and all the people I have learned from are from Brazil, so I really don’t like to make America and Brazil separate,” he writes. “I wouldn’t be training jiu-jitsu if it wasn’t for Brazil, so I’m super thankful for Brazil and the people from Brazil! I believe my jiu-jitsu is where it needs to be to win the black belt worlds; every day I am improving with positions in training; now I’m just trying to improve with the experience competing.”

Move to Caio Terra

A black-belt under Jonas “Tagarela” Gurgel and Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, Mikey used to train at Atos until last year, when he decided to move to the team of two-time world champion Caio Terra.

“I have learned many positions training with Caio,” Musumeci writes, “but the biggest things I have learned are more with mindset and how to become a better competitor and person. At this level the jiu-jitsu is very even with each other, which makes strategy so important! Very thankful to have Caio as a coach and to train with, and we can both figure out and learn new positions when we train, so it’s amazing!”

Mikey, who recently joined Caio Terra Association with his sister Tammi Musumeci, used the right strategy to beat Miyao. The fight was obstructed, with many grip exchanges but, at the end, Musumeci got the victory.

Every year the black belt division gets a boost of talent as brown belts get promoted and add even more hardship to the game.

The 2016 world championship will be no exception, as a bunch of the best brown belts in 2015 will be registered for the black belt division.

We have highlighted 8 of these newcomers, but there are many more out there.

Here we go.

The 2015 brown belt light-featherweight world champion has already debuted in the black belt division in great fashion. Looking incredibly thin, he signed up for the roosterweight division at the 2016 Pan and made it to the top of the podium. For the 2016 Worlds, Mikey and his sister Tammi have moved to California to train with Gui and Rafa Mendes at AOJ Academy, which should generate some great results. Mikey is signed up for the roosterweight once again, but maybe going up to light-feather is his best chance to win another gold medal for Team USA, which doesn’t happen in the male division since 2007.

Just like Musumeci, Najmi won his division (lightweight) at the 2015 Worlds. After getting his black belt, he struck gold for the first time at the 2016 Pan, with a beautiful Estima lock on Francisco Iturralde. The 2016 Worlds black belt lightweight division will be a true mine field, with Lucas Lepri, Michael Langhi, AJ Agazarm, JT Torres, etc. Najmi is another big talent to make things even more complicated.

Another PSLPB Cicero Costha talent, Yago Souza closed out the brown belt middleweight division in 2015 with his teammate Manuel Ribamar Filho. Then, he got his black belt and already did great at the 2016 European and the 2016 Pan, wining the middleweight division both in Lisbon and Irvine. It should interesting to see Yago going against the likes of Otavio Sousa, Claudio Calasans Jr, Victor Estima and Vitor Oliveira, just to name a few.

The 2015 brown belt open class runner-up also transitioned to the black belt and has already made his presence felt. He finished third in the heavyweight division at the 2016 Pan and won the same division at the recent 2016 Brazilian Nationals. The heavyweight division with the likes of Tim Spriggs, André Galvão, Erberth Santos, Jackson Souza, among others should be a great challenge for the newcomer.

The double gold campaign at the 2015 Worlds puts some pressure on Aly for his first Worlds as a black belt. Already registered in the ultra-heavy division, Mahamed should encounter some big competition, including Alex Trans, Marcus Buchecha, Gabriel Lucas, João Gabriel Rocha, among others.

Another talent coming out of Romulo Barral’s lineage, Arges finished third at the brown belt middleweight division of the 2015 Worlds. As a black belt, he did great at the 2015 Irvine Open and then travelled to Lisbon for another great showing at the 2016 European, closing out the medium-heavy division with his Professor Barral.

Mansher Khera

Fresh out of Marcelo Garcia’s talent factory, Khera (and his teammate Jon Satava) will be making his first appearance at the Worlds as a black belt. They could have done it last year, but they did not have time to add up the 50pts necessary to qualify after being promoted. Khera is signed up for the lightweight division while Satava is registered for the middleweight.

Lucas Barbosa

The Hulk won the brown belt medium-heavy division at the 2016 Worlds. After getting his black belt, he jumped right into the mix and managed some big results. most importantly the medium-heavy division at the 2015 Worlds No-Gi. Just recently, he won the medium-heavy division at the 2016 Las Vegas Open. Lucas should be another big hurdle at the medium-heavy in Long Beach.

Mikey Musumeci debuted in the black belt division with a bang.

Last Saturday, he defeated João Miyao 5-1 on advantages after a berimbolo battle at the 2015 American Nationals.

The younger brother of Tammi Musumeci talked to GRACIEMAG’s Vitor Freitas about the accomplishment.

“It was an honor to compete against João. He’s been an idol for such a long time and that’s why it was incredible to test myself against the best. The match was a battle for both of us, but I managed to come out with a win. I have a lot of respect for João,” said Mikey.

Musumeci got close to doing what most people not even dream of when facing a Miyao.

“In the beginning of the match I almost got his back, but I was unable to complete the technique. After that, I attacked the leg lock several times. João is very flexible so it’s really difficult to get him to tap with an attack from the waist down.”

In closing, Mikey shared his amazement with how fast he evolved through the rankings.

“A few years ago I was a blue belt watching this guys compete in the black belt. Now I am fighting them. It was a great opportunity to test myself and see at what level I am. Before the match, Professor Gui Mendes told me not to be nervous and that competing in the black belt division is the same as all the other belts. Now I know it’s only the beginning. I can hardly wait to do it again.”
