Until he was able to stabilize his life financially through BJJ, Gustavo Andrade had no easy times. Born in Duque de Caxias, a municipality in Rio de Janeiro state, this black-belt traveled a long road of sacrifice, pain and, of course, success. In 2013, unaware of what would happen four years later, the Mountain View, Calif. resident was running raffles on social media to be able to continue training and competing at a high level.

The effort paid off later in one of the most popular BJJ hubs. Now also a teacher and legal resident of the U.S., Gustavo has begun enjoying the benefits the sport can offer to those who refuse to give up. If he had accepted the opinion held by some people close to him that “jiu-jitsu is not a job,” things would have turned out differently. At 29 and full of goals to reach, this student under Fábio Andrade gave an interview where he went over his trajectory.

“Many times, I thought of quitting,” he said. “People close to me thought that BJJ is not a job but, in reality, they had this view because they were not inside BJJ like me. My mom, before she died, also thought that BJJ was dangerous to me, but the sport ended up being the best decision of my life, and wherever she is, she will see that everything I have today is because of the sport.”

Gustavo added: “I used to life in Duque de Caxias. I used to run raffles to be able to fight. It was a ton of hardship — and now it has all changed! Today I’m living a stable life here, in the United States. Teaching BJJ has become my main source of income; I’m able to live and eat well, and I even save some money. But given that I’ve been a hard worker since I was little, I also work on some food delivery apps in my spare time. I’m always working.”

Unlike most Brazilian teachers, Gustavo arrived in the U.S. knowing how to speak the language, which helped. “I got here right away communicating really well with everybody; it’s really nice understanding and talking jiu-jitsu with the Americans,” he said. “The teachings from my physical education college helps me manage my classes in such a way that I can cater both to the competitive public and to the public that trains as a hobby, in a professional way that’s very different from the jiu-jitsu that was taught in the past.”

Having now lived in the U.S. for four years, Gustavo went on to compare the states of the sport in Brazil and in his adoptive home. “I believe in the U.S. jiu-jitsu is being more valued as a profession, and consequently your recognition ends up being greater,” he said. “But in regard to training, I believe jiu-jitsu in Brazil is tougher due to the fact that it’s in our nature, especially those who came from the bottom like me, to fight to survive. It’s easy to channel that aggressiveness necessary to win a fight, whereas in the U.S. jiu-jitsu is more commercial. There are good competitive teams, but it’s still different from Brazil.”

The owner of a ferocious guard and a swift wrist fold, Gustavo said he is ready for a superfight. With a record of two wins in Fight to Win, a promotion specialized in jiu-jitsu superfights in the U.S., he has some guys in his crosshairs. “I would really like to fight Otávio Souza, especially after he won the Pan as a medium heavyweight in 2020 and against Lo, which has always been a reference in the sport. Nothing better than facing your idols, which is the case with Lo.” Gustavo added, “If I had to mention someone from the new generation, it would be Gabriel Almeida. But, as always, I’m ready to answer any call. I continue to train hard!”

These are the same technical minutiae used by great champions like Roger Gracie and the brothers Saulo and Xande Ribeiro, whose way of mounting is terrifying to all types of opponents. In your lifestyle lesson, check out the testimonial by red-and-white-belt Maurição Gomes. Go to gallerr.com/rgoa to get unlimited access to this ongoing course.

Five lessons on the mount in BJJ.

One lifestyle lesson.

Day 1: Monday

Lesson 1: Armbar from the mount

<span data-mce-type=”bookmark” style=”display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;” class=”mce_SELRES_start”></span>

When you reach the mount, one of the most common reactions by an opponent is to extend one arm to push your torso, in order to find space to escape. It’s important to know that and have a riposte ready to go, as Renzo teaches here. Renzo splits the armbar attack into three parts. Repeat each stage many times in a progressive manner and let it flow at training.

Lesson 2: How BJJ can improve your life

If you’re going through a rough patch, practicing BJJ can make a difference. It’s what red-and-white-belt Maurição Gomes teaches here, describing the potential BJJ has to improve people’s lives. He talks about witnessing BJJ perform miracles for army vets and cancer patients. Watch this inspiring lesson and find many ways to evolve through constant training.

Day 2: Tuesday

Lesson 3: From side control to the mount

Paulo Guillobel analyzes the four key points for you to exert control over your opponent’s body. By controlling these points, you become capable of shutting down their movements and reach the mount, foiling their reactions. Guillobel shows this in practice, with an efficient progression from side control to the mount.

Day 3: Wednesday

Lesson 4: Keeping the mount

Before you start attacking from the mount, it’s necessary to learn how to stabilize it, cancelling any escape attempts. Guillobel teaches a very efficient drill for you to develop the ability to frustrate your opponent whenever they try to escape from your mount.

Day 4: Thursday

Lesson 5: Using head control on the mount

Paulo Guillobel teaches a drill to help you perfect your control over an opponent from the mount by controlling their head. Note that it’s an anticipation technique — you can’t afford to mess up the timing here.

Day 5: Friday

Lesson 6: Mount control by holding the collar

What do you do when your opponent starts pushing your hips with both hands to try and escape the mount? Paulo Guillobel shows an effective option wherein he holds his opponent’s cross collar. Note that if Guillobel’s opponent continues moving to escape from the mount, he tends to choke himself. Another great drill to sink your teeth into.

Day 1: Monday

Lesson 1: Open guard concepts

Pay attention to how Tunico breaks his opponent’s posture with the hand on the collar, and also to the way he controls the distance with one foot propped on the passer’s hips, while his other leg makes circular motions to break eventual grips on his pants.

One way to fight with the open guard, without losing control over your opponent’s movements, is by controlling both their sleeves, using your feet on their biceps.
Combine two or three attacks in a sequence — that is one of the secrets to making your spider guard truly efficient. In this lesson, Leo Tunico analyzes a common scenario. The guard player tries to sweep the passer, who momentarily gets unbalanced but does not fall. That does not mean the attack was useless, though. Tunico shows that in the middle of the movement, the passer made himself vulnerable to the triangle.

Day 4: Thursday

Lesson 4: Sweep from the sit-up guard

The adjustments of the sit-up guard require you to hug one of the passer’s legs and, if possible, control the sleeve on the opposite side. Pay attention to the stress Leo Tunico places on the need to break your opponent’s posture to be able to sweep them.

Day 5: Friday

Lesson 4: Lifestyle / The art of challenging oneself

Jimmy Pedro says that nothing can stop us but ourselves. In this lesson, he instigates you to leave your comfort zone and strive to realize your dreams. A true push of confidence and positivity to help you pierce the blockade of fear and laziness and go get what’s yours.

Lesson 6: Variation on the sweep from sit-up guard

Tunico shows that when we play the sit-up guard, our opponent tends to use their knee to press our body against the ground. Knowing this, he adds an effective counter-move and ends up on top.

Yes, we mean that moment your opponent places the hooks with the legs, attaches themselves to your torso like a backpack and starts taking aim at your neck or joints.

If you get nervous just thinking about it, don’t miss the classes taught by Robson Gracie Jr., who teaches over ten different ways to escape from having your back controlled, blocking finish attempts and positioning yourself favorably.

After you study and absorb the mechanics taught by Robson Gracie, you will be qualified to armor your back against even the most skilled back-takers at your gym and in competitions.

Week 7 of Renzo Gracie Online Academy is organized in this manner:

Thirteen techniques of defense against back control.

Sumi Gaeshi: the mechanic of the “sacrifice technique” that has you initially going to the ground to only then find your opponent’s point of unbalancing.

Lifestyle: Bruno Fernandes will show you that age is relative in BJJ.

Day 1: Monday

Lesson 1: Renzo Gracie’s defense against back control

Being controlled from the back, Renzo walks you through blocking choke attempts and escaping safely, repositioning yourself to put your foe in your guard.

Lesson 2: Back defense trapping your opponent’s arms

When your opponent controls your back, you must not get terrified. Resort to cold blood and technical refinement, as in this subtle defense taught by Robson Gracie Jr.

Lesson 3: Back defense ending up on top

Learn an efficient way to escape from your opponent’s control over your back, ending up on top of them, in the guard or even on half-guard.

Day 2: Tuesday

Lesson 4: Back defense moving to half-guard

Be careful as you try to escape from your opponent’s back control, because they might be able to anticipate what you’re doing, repositioning themselves on the mount. Check out how Robsinho Gracie prevents this.

Lesson 5: Back defense passing your opponent’s arm to the other side

The moment your opponent advances one hand to grab your collar may be a decisive one. See how Robsinho Gracie capitalizes on this.

Lesson 6: Back defense variation passing your opponent’s arm to the other side

Robsinho Gracie again uses the defense taught in the previous lesson. However, now, instead of ending up inside his opponent’s guard, Robsinho ends up on the bottom, playing guard. Understand why this happens, and add these two options to your game.

Day 3: Wednesday

Lesson 7: Back defense for when your opponent controls your collar

If, during the back attack, your opponent manages to pass their arm flush with your neck and control the cross collar, there is a high risk of you getting subbed. Even so, there are ways to defend against the choke and escape.

Lesson 8: Back defense foiling the rear naked choke

Be careful as you try to defend against the cross-collar choke from the back, because, depending on the direction you try to take your opponent’s arm, you may leave your neck vulnerable to an RNC.

Lesson 9: Lifestyle / You will never be too old to train BJJ

“I’m too old to practice BJJ.” Bruno Fernandes destroys this kind of thinking — one of the most common excuses for not enrolling in a gym.

Day 4: Thursday

Lesson 10: Defend by moving your head in a circle

If your opponent uses their head to direct your body to the side that favors the choke, you can move your neck so as to circle their head, finding space to escape from the move.

Lesson 11: Escape by the “wrong side”

When you get attacked from the back, even if your opponent manages to control your cross collar and direct your body to the side that favors the choke, there is an efficient way for you to defend and escape.

Lesson 12: Freeing yourself from the seat belt

The back control known as the seat belt is very efficient, able to connect the attacker to their opponent’s back in a very tight way, like a backpack. But there are ways to escape.

Day 5: Friday

Lesson 13: Freeing your head downward

In essence, when we get attacked from the back, what we need in order to escape is to open up space. As he pulls the arm that attacks his neck, Robson gets the space necessary to slip his head downward and reposition himself on half-guard.

Lesson 14: Last-ditch defense

Robson Gracie teaches the hardest of all his defensive options against chokes from the back. It’s a daring spin — one so unexpected, it may surprise many opponents.

Lesson 15: Sumi Gaeshi

The sumi gaeshi is known as a “sacrifice technique,” since the fighter performing it goes to the ground at first, and only then finds their opponent’s point of unbalancing. It’s a very daring move. And one of the most beautiful ones in this course.

P.S. Improve your jiu-jitsu in Renzo Gracie’s team – RGOA

This documentary goes behind the scenes in the fight between Roger and Buchecha, and analyzes the preparation, the techniques and the strategies of these two giants for their momentous clash.

You may have seen online the fight between Roger Gracie and Marcus Buchecha — 23 IBJJF world titles between them, and counting — held at Gracie Pro’s July 23, 2017 event. While these are very different times, one would be hard-pressed to find a match better suited to be called the Helio vs. Kimura of the modern age of BJJ. It is at the very least a momentous duel between the two greatest BJJ world champions — a clash of generations where the old-timer (sorry, Roger) returned for one final go-around and defeated the reigning king of the sport.

It’s time to go beyond the mere record of the match and learn many lessons from the documentary Roger Gracie: Legacy. Produced by Gallerr, this short film reveals never-before-seen moments of the athletes’ preparation, as well as episodes of tension going on backstage.
Narrated in first person by Roger Gracie, this documentary helps you understand what goes on inside the mind of an elite competitor before, during and after a big BJJ challenge. In addition, Roger analyzes his emotional state on that July afternoon and confesses he felt nervous, despite not letting it show.

Also valuable is the audio capturing the voice of Renzo Gracie, who was in Roger’s corner throughout the match. And you won’t want to miss Roger’s considerations upon watching the crucial parts of the fight, like the first five minutes, when he frustrated Buchecha with efficient blocks to the younger fighter’s takedown attempts.

The math is simple: if you pass your opponent’s guard, stabilize side control and move to the finish or to an even better position. Never retreat. Your opponent cannot be allowed to restore their guard. Moreover, you should not stall the fight in side control and stay there, like we see too often. Fight forward.

It was with this intent that the Renzo Gracie Online Academy set up the course’s third week. You will have access to a complete dossier on attacks starting from side control, discovering efficient ways to distribute your weight over your opponent, and move to the north-south and to the knee-on-belly, always looking for a finish.

Week 3 of the Renzo Gracie Online Academy program is organized as follows:

Ten submission techniques starting from side control

Ippon seoi nage: the mechanic of one of the most common takedowns in BJJ competitions

Lifestyle: how to define how many times you should go to the gym per week

Lesson 1: Triple attack with Renzo Gracie

Renzo Gracie proved the efficiency of this technique as he defeated former UFC champion Maurice Smith in Rings in 1999. After reaching side control, Renzo traps the head and one of the arms with the triangle. Then he shifts the attack to the other arm, with a kimura, americana or a straight armlock.

Lesson 2: Americana from side control

After reaching side control, Tunico teaches adjustment details for you to stabilize the position. When his opponent accepts the side control, Tunico moves on the attack with the americana, keeping his torso low at all times, without offering space for his opponent to escape.

Lesson 3: Armbar from side control

In case your opponent slips their arm out at the moment you try to employ the attack taught in the previous lesson, here’s a very efficient variation redoing the control over your opponent’s arm, spinning your body 180 degrees and finishing via armbar.

Lesson 4: North-south choke

Léo Tunico effectively distributes his weight over his opponent’s torso in order to move without losing control. During these movements, the instructor makes the necessary adjustments to apply a cross-grip choke ending in the north-south.

Lesson 5: Kimura from the north-south

If your opponent defends their neck when you apply the choke taught in the previous lesson, take advantage of the progression towards the north-south and surprise them with a kimura.

Lesson 6: Collar choke with knee on belly

What if your opponent closes up efficiently, making any attack from side control harder? Respond by placing a knee on their stomach, which should force them to open up. Then take advantage of the spaces to finish through a choke with hands crossed.

Lesson 7: Double attack with knee on belly

Léo Tunico again places his knee on his opponent’s stomach and tries to finish with the same choke as last video. But his opponent manages to defend against it. Tunico then surprises him with an armbar.

Lesson 8: Lifestyle — Training frequency

How often do you wish to practice BJJ? Try not to shoot too high.

If your goal isn’t met, you may become disappointed an unmotivated. Check out Bruno Fernandes’s tips to protect and consolidate the consistency of your training.

Lesson 9: Lapel choke with knee on belly

Again with a knee on his opponent’s belly, Tunico weighs the possibility of that opponent turning sideways to escape. This enables Tunico to control the lapel and make the adjustments for an unstoppable choke.

Lesson 10: Variation on the lapel choke from knee-on-belly

If your opponent uses their arm to try and block the choke, take advantage by controlling that arm and trapping it with your torso. Distribute your weight over your opponent, finishing them with a choke similar to tightening a triangle.

Lesson 11: Armbar with arm trapped by lapel

An armbar variation. He traps his opponent’s right arm, using his leg and an arm. Then he nullifies his opponent’s left arm with that opponent’s own lapel. Tunico pretends to seek a mount, but chooses to immediately attack the arm with a sweet armbar variation.

Lesson 12: Ippon seoi nage

We wrap up the week with a lesson on stand-up, wherein you will refine your ippon seoi nage. This takedown requires you to turn your back to your opponent, flexing your legs and throwing that opponent over your shoulder. Learn details and a tip to avoid getting caught in a rear naked choke.

And that’s it for week 3, keeping in mind our goals of:

maintaining your motivation;

increasing your knowledge;

getting you to go practice.

Keep it up!
The post Build an arsenal of finishes from side control first appeared on Graciemag.

BJJ is a martial art rich in details, and a simple change in grip and body position can make all the difference in your game. That’s what Renzo Gracie taught in a 2017 seminar in Florianópolis, Brazil. He showed a simple detail to a grip that impressed even Demian Maia, who was helping him demonstrate it. Renzo simply trades the traditional kata-gatame grip for a simpler, more functional one. It was immediately named the kataga-renzo.
