Peso pluma dono de uma guarda enjoada, Laércio Fernandes vem se destacando nas competições internacionais. Em 2010, o faixa-preta da Lotus, pupilo de Givanildo Santana, conquistou o bicampeonato no Nacional Americano, com vitória sobre feras como Caio Terra, além de também ter vencido no Honolulu Open. Agora o lutador esquenta o motor para tentar mais um ouro, no Campeonato Europeu.

“Estou me preparando para o Europeu desde novembro. Eu e o Giva treinamos juntos todos os dias e foi possível corrigir alguns erros que cometi no ano passado. Agora, em janeiro, fico no Brasil, já que o Giva está focado nos treinos de MMA. Neste tempo, treino na Lotus Osasco e nas academias Cia Paulista, Guigo e Barbosa. Tenho muitos amigos nesses lugares e só tenho a agradecer por me ajudarem tanto”, conta.

“Neste ano pretendo lutar todos os campeonatos da IBJJF. Além do Europeu, quero participar da maioria dos eventos Open, do Brasileiro, Pan e do Mundial”, completa o faixa-preta.

Entre as metas, o Mundial é um sonho. Laércio sabe que não vai ser fácil entre os plumas, mas o triunfo contra um dos grandes nomes das categorias mais leves em 2010 passa mais confiança.

“Existem muitos atletas duros e poderia citar uns dez que podem ser campeões mundiais”, diz.

“Depois da vitória contra o Caio, muita gente começou a me conhecer mais e a valorizar mais o meu trabalho, já que ele é um excelente atleta e já foi campeão mundial. No entanto, essa vitória ficou no passado e estou focado apenas nos meus treinos”, encerra.

A light featherweight with a pesky guard, Laércio Fernandes has been standing out in international competition. In 2010, the Lotus black belt and Givanildo Santana student conquered his second American national title, with a win over Caio Terra, as well as having won the Honolulu Open. Now the fighter warms up his engines for another gold-medal run, at the European Open.

I’m getting ready for this November’s European Open. Giva and I are training together every day and we managed to correct some mistakes I made last year. Now, in January, I’ll stay put in Brazil, since Giva is focused on his MMA training. So during this period I’ll train at Lotus Osasco and Cia Paulista, Guigo, and Barbosa academies. I have a lot of friends in these places and can only thank them for having helped me so much,” he says.

“This year I intend to compete at all the IBJJF competitions. Besides the European Open, I want to be at most of the Open events, the Brazilian Nationals, the Pan, and the Worlds,” adds the black belt.

Of these targets, the Worlds is his dream. Laércio knows it won’t be easy winning the light featherweight division, but his triumph over one of the big names of the lighter weight categories in 2010 makes him more confident.

“There are a lot of tough athletes out there, and I can name ten who can become world champions,” he says.

“After beating Caio, a lot more people came to know who I am and appreciate what I do, since he’s an excellent athlete and was a world champion. However, the win is now in the past and I’m focused only on my training,” he says in closing.

Roberto Abreu, o Cyborg, segue avassalador nos eventos da IBJJF. Depois de faturar peso e absoluto no Honolulu Open e no Miami Open, o faixa-preta se prepara para o Mundial Sem Kimono. Confira o bate-papo da fera com o GRACIEMAG.com:  

O que achou da participação no Miami Open?

O Miami Open foi muito bom e organizado como sempre. Graças a Deus, estou muito feliz com o trabalho que a equipe vem fazendo. Eu e o Pablo Popovitch montamos o The Avengers BJJ e só está rendendo bons frutos. Tivemos mais de 50 alunos inscritos, ficamos em 2º lugar entre as academias, a apenas dois pontos da Gracie Elite, e ganhamos quase todos os absolutos. Assim como fechamos todos os absolutos nos últimos eventos da IBJJF (Pan Sem kimono e Honolulu Open), repetimos agora.

Mas como foi a sua participação?

Tive duas lutas no peso e duas no absoluto. Fui campeão no peso tendo finalizado o Stephen Hall na final. No absoluto acabei fechando com meu parceiro de treino Marcus Almeida “Bochecha”, moleque muito bom, aluno do Rodrigo Cavaca que está tirando onda, fechando todos os absolutos com agente.

Como estão os preparativos para o Mundial Sem Kimono?

Os treinos para o Mundial não podiam estar melhores. Essa é a próxima missão dos The Avengers, conquistar o mundo tanto no peso quanto no absoluto! Vamos entrar com uma galera muito boa no evento, eu, Pablão (Popovitch), Jeff Monson, Cavaca, Bochecha, Wagner Rocha, Jake Mackenzie, Thiago Abreu, James Brasco, João Macaio, Marcel Goulart, Rafael Chaves, Guedes… O treino está alucinante, todos estão muito bem treinados e ansiosos para por os pés nas áreas de luta de Long Beach.

Vai buscar peso e absoluto novamente?

Como sempre vou nas duas categorias. Amo lutar no absoluto e este ano, com certeza, temos força pra dominar na Califa!

Alguma novidade pensando na próxima temporada?

Fui muito feliz neste ano com o Jiu-JItsu, com várias grandes conquistas. Mas já sabia que era só um preparatório para o ano que vem. Vou lutar tudo que vier pela frente. Pretendo lutar os dois Mundiais (com e sem kimono), assim como o ADCC e o World Pro pela primeira vez. Que venha 2011!

Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu carries on in his rampant run of IBJJF events. Following his conquest of his weight and the open weight groups at the Honolulu and Miami Opens, the black belt now gets ready for the No-Gi Worlds. Check out the chat the submission stalwart had with GRACIEMAG.com:

What’s your assessment of the Miami Open?

The Miami Open was great and well-organized as always. Thank God, I’m really happy with the work the team’s been doing. Pablo Popovitch and I set up Avengers BJJ and now we’re just reaping the rewards. We had more then fifty students signed up and took second in the overall team dispute – just two points behind Gracie Elite –, plus we won nearly all the absolutes. Just as we closed out all the absolutes at the last IBJJF events (No-Gi Pan and Honolulu Open), we’ll do the same again now.

How about your performance?

I had two matches at weight and two in the absolute. I won my weight group beating Stephen Hall in the final. I ended up closing out the absolute with my training partner Marcus “Bochecha” Almeida, an awesome kid, a Rodrigo Cavaca student who’s on a roll, clocking out absolutes with us.

How’s your preparation for the No-Gi Worlds going?

Training for the Worlds couldn’t be going better. That’s The Avengers’ next mission, to conquer the world both at weight and open weight! A good group is going into the event: me, Pablo (Popovitch), Jeff Monson, Cavaca, Bochecha, Wagner Rocha, Jake Mackenzie, Thiago Abreu, James Brasco, João Macaio, Marcel Goulart, Rafael Chaves, Guedes… Training is out of the world, everyone in top shape and anxious step step onto the match areas in Long Beach.

Will you compete at both weight and open weight again?

As always, I’1l be in both division. I love competing in the absolute, and this year, for sure we’ve got what it takes to dominate in California!

Any news for next season?

I’m really happy with how things have gone in Jiu-Jitsu this year, with the various big conquests. But I already knew it was just preparation for next year. I’ll compete in everything out there. I intend to compete at both Worlds’ (gi and no-gi), as well as the ADCC and World Pro for the first time. Bring on 2011!

Como está a vida desde que você se mudou do Brasil para competir e dar aulas de Jiu-Jitsu nos Estados Unidos?

Depois que me mudei para os Estados Unidos para viver meu sonho, que é competir e dar aulas, muita coisa boa tem acontecido e muitas oportunidades surgiram. Esse mês que passou, tive o prazer de ministrar vários seminários pelo mundo. 

Por onde esteve?

Minha viajem começou no Havaí. Fui competir o Honolulu Open, organizado pela IBJJF, e consegui a medalha de prata no absoluto. Logo depois disso fui para o Japão, onde eu lutei o Campeonato Asiático e fui  campeão da  minha categoria e do absoluto, tendo fechado com um amigo meu, Marquinhos de Souza, da Bonsai. 

Algum novo projeto? 

Depois do campeonato no Japão, voltei para os EUA para a gravação do meu DVD, que vai ser lançado agora em novembro. Acabando as gravaçõees, fui dar aula na academia filial da Drysdale JJ, no Canadá, onde fiquei por seis dias e ministrei um seminário. Depois fui para Europa, na Irlanda, Bélgica e Holanda, fazendo seminários e aulas. 

É verdade que você também está ajudando na preparação de atletas para o UFC?

Quando estava na Europa, o Joe Lauzon, lutador do  UFC que treina Jiu-Jitsu comigo, me ligou dizendo que iria lutar no UFC 123, no dia 20 de novembro, evento que conta com a luta entre  Lyoto Machida e  Quinton Jackson. Então voltei aos EUA para afiar  o chão e auxiliar o Joe nesse desafio. 

E como é o Jiu-Jitsu do Joe Lauzon? Na última luta, contra o Gabe Ruediger, ele deu show no chão…

Muita gente me pergunta sobre o Jiu-Jitsu dele e qual é a estratégia que montamos  para a luta. Respondo que a nossa meta é estar bem em todos os aspectos. Não quero saber sobre o adversário e sim sobre o Joe. Quero ele bem no Jiu-Jitsu, mas também no cardio, na explosão e na trocação. O Joe tem vários excelentes profissionais para auxiliar ele e, fora isso, é bom por natureza. Ele é muito forte mesmo. Acho o Joe um lutador completo com muita vontade de ganhar sempre. O chão dele é afiado e é muito difícil estabilizar ele em qualquer posição. E se você piscar e der mole,  já era. Ele pega. 

Qual a sua próxima competição? 

Como tenho que treinar o Joe Lauzon para luta dele, não poderei ir para o Sul-Americano, que vai rolar no Brasil. Tenho um aluno americano chamado Garret que vai me representar lá. É um faixa-roxa e recentemente  ficou em vice no Pan e no absoluto  do New York Open, com apenas 70kg. 

E os seminários, continuam?  

Nesse sábado, 22 de outubro, estarei em uma de minhas filiais, a academia Two Swords BJJ. No domingo, vou estar na Intenze MMA Academy, do faixa preta americano Brian Caldwell. Always a handful in competitions, black belt Abmar Barbosa has traveled the world to compete and teach seminars. Furthermore, Abmar helps out in the training of UFC fighter Joe Lauzon, who has a fight coming up. Check out the fighter’s chat with GRACIEMAG.com.

How has life been since you left Brazil for the United States to compete and teach class?

Since moving to the United States to fulfill my dream, which is to teach, a lot of good stuff has happened to me and lots of opportunities have arisen. This past month I had the pleasure of teaching a number of seminars around the world.

Where all did you go?

My trip started in Hawaii. I went to compete at the IBJJF’s Honolulu Open and managed to take silver in the absolute. After that I went to Japan, where I competed at the Asian Open and won my division and the absolute, closing out with my friend Marquinhos de Souza, of Bonsai.

You have any new projects coming up?

Following the championship in Japan, I returned to the USA to shoot my DCD, which will launch in November. Once filming was over, I went to teach at a Drysdale JJ branch in Canada, where I stayed for six days and taught a seminar. Then I went to Europe: Ireland, Belgium, and Holland, teaching seminars and classes.

Is it true you are also helping out fighters training for the UFC?

When I was in Europe, Joe Lauzon, a UFC fighter who trains Jiu-Jitsu with me, called me saying he is going to fight at UFC 123 on November 20, the one where Lyoto Machida and Quinton Jackson will fight. So I returned to returned to the USA to help Joe brush up on his ground game for the fight.

And how is Joe Lauzon’s Jiu-Jitsu? In his last fight, against Gabe Ruediger, he put on quite a show on the ground…

A lot of folks ask me about his Jiu-Jits and our strategy for the fight. I reply by saying our aim is to be good in all respects. I don’t want to know about the opponent, I want to know about Joe. I want him to do well in Jiu-Jitsu, but also to have good cardio, explosiveness, and standup. Joe has a number of excellent professionals helping him and, aside from that, he’s naturally good. He’s really strong. I feel Joe is a complete fighter who always has a lot of desire to win. His ground game is sharp and it’s really hard to keep him from getting out of a position. And if you blink and mess up, it’s over. He gets you.

What’s your next competition?

As I have to train Joe Lauzon for his fight, I won’t make it to the South American Championship in Brazil. I have an American student named Garret who will represent me there. He a purple belt and recently was runner-up in the absolute division of the Pan and the New York Open, and he’s only 70 kg (155 lbs).

And will you carry on teaching seminars?

This Saturday, October 22, I’ll be at one of my branches, Two Swords BJJ academy. On Sunday I’ll be at black belt Brian Caldwell’s Intenze MMA Academy. Those interested can shoot an email to abmarbarbosa@hotmail.com. Thanks to you all at GRACIEMAG.com and GRACIEMAG magazine!

Jonatas “Tagarela” Gurgel was one of the standouts of the Honolulu Open that shook up Hawaii this month. Pleased with his triumph, now the Atos representative is getting ready for new challenges.

“I ended up winning the Honolulu Open. I competed at lightweight and became champion after two matches. The first one I got the finish and I won the final against GFTeam’s Wallace Castro by points (12 to 0),” he explains.

His upcoming matches will be in the United States, in two IBJJF tournaments.

“Now my focus is still on the gi. I’ll be at the American Nationals and the Miami Open,” says the black belt, already with his eye on 2011.

“I’m competing with my focus on the next year’s big tourneys. Next season I’ll do my preparations at Atos headquarters in Rio Claro, and my aim is to get into a strong competition rhythm this year to do awesome in everything in 2011. I want to double up with (Gilbert) Durinho at lightweight!” he forewarns.

Jonatas Gurgel, o Tagarela, foi um dos destaques do Honolulu Open, evento que agitou o Havaí neste mês. Contente pelo triunfo, agora o representante da Atos se prepara para novos desafios.
“Acabei de ganhar o Honolulu Open. Lutei no peso leve e fui campeão fazendo duas lutas. Finalizei a primeira e ganhei a final do Wallace Castro, da GFTeam, por pontos (12 a 0)”, conta.

Os próximos combates serão nos Estados Unidos, em dois torneios da IBJJF.

“Agora o foco continua no pano. Vou lutar o  American National e o Miami Open”, diz o faixa-preta, já de olho em 2011.

“Luto já com foco nos principais campeonatos do ano que vem. Na próxima temporada irei me preparar no CT da Atos, em Rio Claro, e o objetivo é entrar no ritmo de competição forte este ano para arrebentar tudo em 2011. Quero fazer as dobradinhas junto com o (Gilbert) Durinho no leve!”, adianta.

After sweating up his gi at the Honolulu Open, light featherweight fighter Laércio Fernandes has guaranteed his presence at the event.

“I’m confirming that I’ll be at the American Nationals, an event I won last year. I fought at the Honolulu Open, won my weight division and took third in the absolute, losing in the semifinals to Abmar Barbosa by 2 to 0. Now I’m going to compete at this great event,” says Laércio, who is still making the most of his stay in Hawaii.

“I’m training with the fighter Kala Kolohe, who is going fight at the Heroes Hawaii event this Saturday. During my time here in Hawaii, besides training with Kala, I also trained with Wallace Castro and Nova União Hawaii professors Lorenzo Lima and Leandro Niza. It’s been really cool,” says Láercio, a student of armbar king Givanildo Santana.

Depois de suar o kimono no Honolulu Open, o peso pluma Laércio Fernandes é mais um que garante presença. 

“Estou confirmando minha participação do American National, evento que ganhei no ano passado. Lutei o Honolulu Open, ganhei a categoria e fiquei em terceiro no absoluto, perdendo a semifinal por 2 a 0 contra o Abmar Barbosa. Agora vou disputar mais esse grande evento”, conta Laércio, que ainda aproveita a estadia no Havaí. 

“Estou treinando o chão do lutador Kala Kolohe, que vai lutar neste sábado no evento Heroes Hawaii. Nesse tempo que estou aqui no Havaí, além de treinar o Kala, fiquei treinando com o Wallace Castro e com os professores da Nova União Hawaii Lorenzo Lima e Leandro Niza. Está sendo muito legal”, finaliza Laércio, que é pupilo do rei do armlock Givanildo Santana.

Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu, our GMA in Florida, was the main standout at September 4’s Honolulu Open in Hawaii. In those parts, the black belt had some of the greatest experiences of his life, as he himself reports in the text that follows:

“It all started with the dream of an uncle of mine named Lauro Schuback Pastor Almeida, a real character, a surfer in love with Hawaii! My uncle always dreamed of living a surfer’s life, and that he did to a tee, just as my life is Jiu-Jitsu.

“My uncle spent a few days in Hawaii and ended up meeting some beasts from Kauai like Bruno Ewald Longman and his students. Among there were several big names of surfing. Through this contact, I called Bruno, a Gracie Humaitá black belt. I shot the breeze with him and set it up to go to the Honolulu Open.

“Once I go there, what a trip! Bruno is some kind of “mayor” of Kauai. Father to Hunter and Reef, two really tough kids, there’s even a day for him on the island. He has really great energy, as does everybody in his academy. In just one week I made friends for life. It felt like I’d known that crew for years.

Tin Tin, Hawaiian monster!

“From the first day on, I was treated like one of them and became part of the group. Bruno introduced me to Tin Tin, a way tough Hawaiian. The guy weighs 135 kg, burly, but his heart’s big as the whole world, really kind.

“Tin Tin took me to get to know the island. Those were for sure some of the best days of my life. I came from the South Matogrosso wetlands. I lived my entire life in nature, but for sure, I left a piece of me on that island, between the turquoise blue ocean, the mountains, pristine paradisiacal beaches, fish of all sizes and colors. I swam with turtles, sharks; I climbed mountains; I swam under waterfalls… What a fantastic place! Hawaii’s nature is magical and breathtaking!

“Besides that, I was surprised by the Jiu-Jitsu there. The guy is first-rate, really sharp on the ground. I was happy with the training, one of the factors that led to my taking the championship without a glitch. Not just Bruno, but all the students have really strong Jiu-Jitsu.

“From white to black belt, the guys hold their own. Bruno has been heading this project for twenty years and has a number of good fighters on the island. We went to the event on Saturday, I sported the Longman BJ gi to compete and it was awesome competing alongside the gang from Kauai.

“The event was great, as were the local fighters, who displayed excellent technique. I had a few tough matches, had one at weight and two in the absolute. And the absolute final was really good against Abmar Barbosa, who’s been on a roll in Jiu-Jitsu. I pulled off a good performance.

“Winning weight and open weight in Hawaii was glorious! I made a number of contacts, everyone has really great energy over there and I intend to visit the gang as often as possible. I want to get to know the other islands on the archipelago, too. I’m already looking into my return to do some seminars.

“After the event, I even went around with Matheus Vulkan and Rodrigo Clark to go around Oahu, the Mecca of surfing, where Waimea Bay, Pipeline and Sunset are, as well as to swim with the sharks in the bluest ocean in the world!

“Surely, God made Hawaii on the seventh day! Pythagoras said: ‘It’s by traveling that we find pieces of ourselves around the world.’ Well, I found a piece of myself in that paradise!

“Tudo começou com um tio meu chamado Lauro Schuback Pastor Almeida, um figuraça, surfista apaixonado pelo Havaí! O sonho do meu tio sempre  foi viver para o surfe, e isso ele faz ao pé da letra, assim como minha vida é o Jiu-Jitsu.”

“O tiozão foi passar uns dias no Havaí e acabou conhecendo todas as feras do Kauai como o Bruno Ewald Longman e seus alunos. Dentre eles, vários grandes nomes do surf. Através desse contato, liguei para o Bruno, faixa-preta da Gracie Humaitá. Troquei uma ideia com ele e marquei de ir ao Honolulu Open.”

“Chegando lá, que viagem! O Bruno é uma espécie de “prefeito” do Kauai. Pai do Hunter e do Reef, dois moleques muito casca-grossa, tem até um dia nomeado a ele na ilha. Ele tem uma energia muito boa, assim como todos que fazem parte da academia. Em apenas uma semana, fiz amizades para a vida. Parecia que eu conhecia aquela galera há anos.”

“Desde o primeiro dia, fui tratado como um deles e me enturmei com a galera. O Bruno me apresentou ao Tin Tin, um havaiano casca-grossíssima. O cara pesa uns 135kg, sinistro, mas tem um coração do tamanho do mundo, muito gentil.”

“Tin Tin me levou pra conhecer a ilha. Foram, com certeza, alguns dos melhores dias da minha vida. Eu vim do Pantanal Sul-Matogrossense. Vivi minha vida inteira meio à natureza, mas, com certeza, eu tinha um pedaço meu perdido naquela ilha, entre o mar azul turquesa, montanhas, praias paradisíacas completamente virgens, peixes de todos os tamanhos e mais belas cores. Nadei com tartarugas, tubarões; escalei montanhas; mergulhei em cachoeiras… Que lugar fantástico! A natureza no Havaí é mágica e de tirar o fôlego!”

“Além disso, fiquei surpreendido com o Jiu-Jitsu. A galera é nota 10, com o chão muito afiado. Fiquei feliz com o treino, um dos fatores que me fez tirar o campeonato de letra. Não apenas o Bruno, mas todos os seus alunos têm o Jiu-Jitsu muito forte.”

“Da faixa-branca a preta, a galera faz frente. O Bruno comanda esse trabalho lá há 20 anos e tem vários bons lutadores na ilha. Fomos para o evento no sábado, botei o kimono do Longman BJJ pra lutar e foi muito bacana competir meio à galera do Kauai.”

“O evento foi bom, além dos lutadores locais, que mostraram ótima técnica. Tive algumas lutas duras, fiz uma no peso e duas no absoluto. Inclusive, a final no absoluto foi muito boa, contra o Abmar Barbosa, atleta que tá mandando muito no Jiu-JItsu. Consegui fazer uma boa apresentação.”

“Campeão peso e Absoluto no Havaí foi a glória! Fiz vários contatos, todo mundo tem uma energia muito boa lá e pretendo visitar essa galera o máximo de vezes possível. Quero conhecer as outras ilhas do arquipélago também. Já estou viabilizando a minha volta para uns seminários.”

“Depois do evento, ainda saí com o Matheus da Vulkan e o Rodrigo Clark para dar uma volta em Oahu, a meca do surfe, onde fica Waimea Bay, Pipeline, Sunset, além de nadar com tubarões no mar mais azul do mundo!”
