Ao entrar no pavilhão para o campeonato, o faixa-preta tinha na mente um pensamento firme como uma rocha. “Esta será minha última competição. Muito provavelmente, será minha última luta de Jiu-Jitsu”. Ao ser chamado para competir, no entanto, ele já não tinha mais a mesma certeza.

O cérebro talvez fosse mais frio e objetivo. Claro, seria sua última vez a pisar no tatame de uma competição. Contudo, seu coração soprava em outra direção:

“Segundos antes da luta, o meu coração me dizia que não podia ser. Não podia ser a última vez, como poderia? Eu amo demais o Jiu-Jitsu, e tudo que gira em torno do esporte – tudo que nos faz superar os nossos fantasmas e as nossas dificuldades, por maiores que sejam. O Jiu-Jitsu é o que nos faz esquecer a vida lá fora e sentir o momento com uma intensidade que só quem pratica, só quem se entrega à arte suave sabe o que significa.”

O faixa-preta em questão é Álvaro Miguel Costa, e a competição se deu em 12 de julho, no norte de Portugal. Realizado pela Federação Portuguesa de Jiu-Jitsu Brasileiro (FPJJB), o Portugal Grand Slam de 2025 se desenrolou no Pavilhão Municipal de Pedrouços, com jovens atletas, futuras promessas e variados campeões locais.

Apesar da concorrência, uma das lutas mais comentadas foi a de Álvaro, na divisão master, acima de 50 anos, contra a fera Antônio Nascimento. Velhos amigos, os dois arrancaram aplausos de todos por vários minutos, e algumas lágrimas.

Aos 50, Álvaro tem enfrentado há tempos um câncer raro e extremamente agressivo, e além da fé e da família, encontra apoio nos treininhos, onde se exercita, se distrai, mantém a cabeça boa, recebe aquela positividade dos colegas de academia.

“Fui bastante emocionado para o evento”, recordaria Álvaro, em conversa com o GRACIEMAG.com. “O Antônio Nascimento é um verdadeiro irmão, a quem tenho que agradecer por me ter proporcionado um momento tão especial. A forma abnegada, altruísta e humilde como preparou o momento para eu vivenciar e sentir é digno apenas de quem é um verdadeiro samurai, um artista marcial de verdade”.

Álvaro, faixa-preta do professor Manoel Neto, já superou cirurgias de mais de seis horas, tratamentos duros e notícias que desanimariam qualquer um. Quando, por exemplo, recebeu dos médicos a noticia de que teria os movimentos muito limitados e seria complexo treinar. Mas a fera jamais desanimou, superou todas as expectativas e não largou o kimono.

Campeão da perseverança, o lutador master comentou o que sentiu, ao ter sua mão erguida pelo árbitro:

“Ao final, quando senti aquela vibração de um pavilhão cheio de cascas-grossas emocionados, pude sentir o quanto o Jiu-Jitsu é diferenciado: não há equipas, grupos, há uma comunidade, somos todos uma família. Não sei o que o futuro me reserva, mas sei que o Jiu-Jitsu me ensinou a levantar sempre. Se eu cair, cairei de cabeça erguida, honrando o que é ser um faixa-preta, sem medo, aceitando o que vier, de coração cheio de gratidão por tudo o que a vida me trouxe”.

Após quase 50 anos como artista marcial, o irmão-oponente Antônio Nascimento, de 55 anos, viveu um dos momentos mais inesquecíveis de sua trajetória, que inclui disputas de triatlo, judô e outras modalidades. Ele também não conseguiu segurar as lágrimas.

“Tenho 48 anos vividos nos tatames, em treinos e disputas com lutadores de Jiu-Jitsu e judocas do mais alto nível. Já passei por muitas coisas, vitórias e derrotas, momentos que marcaram minha história, mas nada comparado a este compromisso. Entrar ali, ao lado do Álvaro, para uma luta com um objetivo tão especial, foi emoção demais, e ultrapassou tudo o que já vivi. Creio que foi um ato muito nobre e corajoso da parte dele”, diria Antônio.

“Estou honrado e orgulho por ter feito parte desse dia, uma luta em que celebramos a vida e a história de um irmão gigante. O Jiu-Jitsu é muito mais do que medalhas, treinos e competições – juntos nós fazemos a diferença. Foi incrível sentir todo o respeito, carinho e amor partilhado, e ver todo mundo emocionado. Nos unimos em torno do Álvaro para mais uma grande batalha e vamos fazer a diferença juntos, em família”, completou o amigo – derrotado no placar, mas energizado para sempre após uma luta que ninguém ali vai esquecer.

Quais lições você aprendeu com o recém conquistado bicampeonato do Grand Slam de Abu Dhabi?
A maior batalha sempre é você versus você!!! A cada desafio, precisamos vencer nossas dúvidas, nosso ego, nosso medo de perder, nossa preguiça, nossa necessidade por prazeres rápidos e baratos (doces, séries, jogos…), para só então realmente virar a chave e começar a pensar em vencer nossos adversários nas áreas de combate. É por isso que muitas vezes perdemos no campeonato mas saímos da arena nos sentindo bem. Afinal, para subir ao tatame, tivemos que vencer várias batalhas internas e isso nos oferece uma baita satisfação pessoal.

Qual mentalização acompanhou você do início ao fim do último Grand Slam?
“Cuide da sua energia!”, eu dizia para mim mesmo. “Cerque-se de pessoas melhores que você e que realmente torcem por você. Fuja de pessoas negativas e pessimistas.”

Que parte do treinamento você mais gostou?
Gosto de todo o processo, sentir que estou fazendo meu máximo para estar bem preparado para as batalhas. Preparação física, alimentação de qualidade, um bom sono para recuperação, estudos de lutas, drills e sparrings, liberação miofascial periódica… Tudo isso disciplina a minha mente e aumenta o meu senso de merecimento. Além disso, gosto muito de meditar, fazer banheira de gelo, curtir a natureza, pisar na grama, ir à praia, isso traz paz e tranquilidade no dia a dia e nos campeonatos. Na verdade eu adoro fazer tudo isso, então para mim não é sacrifício, é o lifestyle que escolhi para a minha vida.

Quais os próximos alvos para a temporada 2024?
Após conquistar o Bicampeonato do Grand Slam Abu Dhabi, busco o bicampeonato World Pro Master em novembro deste ano. Antes, luto o Grand Slam Istambul, que vai rolar em junho.

After an entire afternoon of competition at the highest level, the second and final day of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour Rome 2024 is down for the count this Sunday, April 14th. The tournament started last Friday, April 12th, with the Youths warming the mats for the experienced Masters to put their skills on display the following day. Today, however, the action got dialed all the way up to eleven as the Professional category took the stage to fight for gold, glory, and those sweet AJP ranking points.

And of course, it is impossible to talk about today’s performances without mentioning the black belts. Living up to the title “Elite of Jiu-Jitsu”, the competitors pushed the martial art to its limit in the Centro Olimpico Matteo Pellicone, with standout performances on the way to the top of the podium. Without further ado, let’s check out how each of the Professional Black Belt finals played out, and click here for the full results!

MEN’S GI / BLACK

56kg – Welison Fernandes vs Frederico Guimarães

Leading man in the light-featherweight division ranking, Welison Fernandes showcased his skills in the ADGS Rome final against Frederico Guimarães, with the latter coming out ahead on the scoreboard and having victory in his grasp until the last moments of the duel. While Frederico earned five points throughout the bout by going up from the double pull and sweeping twice, Welison had also swept twice and played from below most of the time. With a good grip on his opponent’s lapel and pants, while keeping an eye on the clock, Welison went up and stabilized close to the end of the match, settling the score at a tight 6-5 to add another gold medal to his resumé.

62kg – Jefferson Fagundes vs Yuri Hendrex

Jefferson Fagundes was the standout name in the 62kg division. After beating his first opponent with a whopping 11-0 score, Jefferson went on to submit Kalel dos Santos in the semifinal and was set to face Yuri Hendrex in the gold round. However, Yuri was unable to fight in the final, so Jefferson rose as the division champion by default.

69kg – Diego Batista vs Dzhimsher Razmadze

Diego “Pato” Batista was like a force of nature in the 69kg division of the ADGS Rome. Arriving as the favorite for the title, Diego had three great victories before he reached the final, the last of which coming via points against the tough Florian Bayili in the semifinal. His opponent in the final would be the Georgian athlete Dzhimsher Razmadze, who had his fair share of rough encounters in the bracket, submitting Thiago Macedo and then outscoring Artur Oliveira in the semis. Unable to compete in the final, Dzhimsher had no choice but to hand over the top spot of the podium to Pato, who won the final and became the champion by default.

77kg – Felipe Ribas vs Luiz Paulo Medeiros

In the blink of an eye, the fight between Felipe and Luiz Paulo had a huge turnaround. Luiz Paulo started ahead on the scoreboard by fearlessly spinning and going up with two points, after pulling guard at the beginning. Meanwhile, Felipe played guard and tried some attacks from the x-guard, eventually managing to spin and go up trying a back take. When Felipe got one of the hooks in, Luiz Paulo spun out of the fight area, prompting the referees to give a penalty for him, while awarding three points to Felipe, two for almost taking the back and another one for going up at the start of his move. Luiz Paulo contested the final score and Felipe ended up taking the win by a 9-2 score.

85kg – Matheus Vetoraci vs Uanderson Ferreira

An exciting fight between two black belts who excel at fighting while standing up. Matheus kicked off the match attempting a takedown on Uanderson but didn’t complete the move, earning only a single point. Uanderson grabbed hold of his opponent’s waist and tried a takedown of his own, but Matheus took advantage of the movement to reach the side with three points, raising the score to 4-0. Uanderson lowered the difference to 4-3 after he reached the side and, when the fight slowed down, both athletes were punished by lack of combativeness. With the score at 5-4 for Matheus, Uanderson attempted another takedown and tied the score at 5-5, but Matheus attacked with an armbar at the very last second of the duel. While Uanderson defended, the referees decided that Matheus’ attack was worth a point due to the danger of submission. Thus, Matheus scored 6-5 to beat the favorite Uanderson for the 85kg division title.

94kg – Luiz Henrique Betta vs Marcos Carrozzino

Another well-balanced duel between the rivals Marcos Carrozzino and Luiz Henrique Betta. Marcos tried to sweep from the guard and Luiz responded with a good cross-choke attempt to tip the balance in his favor on the scoreboard. After a lack of combativeness between both competitors, Betta found enough room to grab Marcos’ waist from the back. Unable to complete the takedown, Luiz Betta jumped on Marcos’ back with a hook near the end of the fight. In the end, Luiz received the advantage for the move and won in a very strategic way, with a 2-1 score.

120kg – Felipe Bezerra vs Jean Maltese

The only local representative in the Professional finals, the Italian Jean Maltese had the rough mission of facing the current ADWPJJC champion Felipe Bezerra. With a solid game, Felipe almost passed and took the back, making it 2-0 on the scoreboard. Up-to-date on defensive moves, Jean avoided the dangerous attack but Felipe tried another pass and took aim at his opponent’s back yet again. Jean managed to defend once more, but Felipe took the win with a 4-0 score and added another high-profile title to his grappling record.

WOMEN’S GI / BROWN / BLACK

49kg – Brenda Larissa vs Diana Teixeira

Brenda Larissa got the better of her rival Diana Thais Teixeira for the 49kg title. After pulling guard, Brenda made a move from half guard to go up, with Diana promptly defended but still losing the lead on the scoreboard to Brenda, who earned a single point for the spin. The duel continued with an intense exchange standing up and Diana took control of the fight’s flow, pulling near the end of the match to sweep, attacking with a triangle, and shifting to an omoplata. Offering no risk of submission, Diana was unable to earn any points for her efforts and Brenda took the title by 1-0.

55kg – Ana Rodrigues vs Beatriz Campos

The reigning champ Ana Rodrigues once again put on a show with her Jiu-Jitsu at the AJP mats. Entering the final against Beatriz Campos, who started ahead on the scoreboard by rising from the double pull, Ana had to use her fearsome lapel adjustment to regain control in the duel. With her opponent’s lapel balled up between her legs, Ana knocked Beatriz off balance and attacked with razor-sharp precision on the foot, submitting to take the 55kg division gold.

62kg – Maria Delahaye vs Julia Alves

Overcoming the odds, Maria Luisa Delahaye got the better of her teammate and AJP multi-champion Julia Alves. After going up from the double pull, Maria spun to take the back, passed the guard, and ended up at Julia’s back. After that, it wasn’t long before Maria had the winning lapel choke in place to seize the title in Rome.

70kg – Ingridd Sousa vs Izadora Silva

Ingridd Sousa won another duel against Izadora Silva on the AJP mats. This time around, Ingridd started ahead on the scoreboard as she pulled and went up. Izadora responded by sweeping from the spider guard, but Ingridd stretched her opponent and managed to go up again, putting pressure to pass and settling the score at 4-2 to become the division champion.

95kg – Yara Soares vs Maria Carolina Vincentini

Yara Soares maintained constant pressure to beat Maria Carolina Vicentini in the 95kg final. After rising from the double pull and opening the score at 1-0, Yara made a good grip on Maria’s pants and put pressure on every inch of her opponent until she managed to pass. With 4-0 on the scoreboard, Yara put her knee on Maria Carolina’s belly without stabilizing to close the score at 5-0 and seize the title.

With another stellar tournament for the books, AJP has successfully added another chapter to the rich history of Rome, bringing some of the most talented athletes to show their prowess in the land that revolutionized sports. Marking the tournament’s first foray into Italian lands, the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour is deep into its preparations to break new ground and make its debut in the famous city of Rome. The event will take place at the Centro Olimpico Matteo Pellicone, from April 12th to 14th and will welcome Youths, Amateurs, Masters, and Professionals to one of the most influential territories in the history of sports.

With such a powerful setting, it stands to reason that the Roman Grand Slam will have an equally stunning line-up to make this debut an unforgettable one. While the event is still a few weeks away, dangerous rookies and battle-hardened veterans have already registered for the competition, with the Professional black belt category bringing some of the very best athletes in the organization to fight for the gold in Rome. Men’s GI / Black

Starting on the men’s side, the 56kg division brings Kalel Santos and Welison Fernandes as the favorites for the podium, followed by Finland’s Marko Oikarainen and the Italian Andrea Verdemare.

In the 62kg division, Cicero Costha’s team comes strong to fight for the gold, with Leonardo Mario, Yuri Hendrex, and Jefferson Fagundes joining the fray. Flying a little under the radar, Wagner Chrispim is another strong athlete who’ll be vying for the title.

Meanwhile, the 69kg division is highlighted by Thiago Macedo and Matheus Onda, closely followed by the Bahraini athlete Ali Monfaradi and his strong Jiu-Jitsu. Another solid contender for the gold is the local Luca Caracciolo, who’ll be heading to Rome to represent his country.

Among the competitors featured in the 77kg division, the highlight is the ADWPJJC champion and AJP Global Ranking champion Lucas Protasio. Igor Feliz also comes to compete for the title and threatens Lucas’ momentum in the season.

One of the most populated categories in the tournament, the 88kg division features the likes of Uanderson Ferreira, Pedro Neto, and Luan Carvalho among the highlights. The experienced Luca Anacoreta, from Italy, and Pedro “Bolo” Silva, from DreamArt, could also make it big in Rome.

The highly decorated Jackson Sousa is one of the highlights registered in the 94kg division, with other well-known AJP names in the bracket, such as Marcos Carrozzino, Luiz Betta, and Roberto Dib Frias.

Among the heaviest warriors of the 120kg division, three athletes have great chances of conquering the gold medal: The current ADWPJJC Professional and Master champion Felipe Bezerra; Frates’ powerhouse Yatan Bueno with his takedowns and high levels of pressure from above; and Matheus “Tá Danado” Xavier, with his unpredictable game and dangerous submissions.

Women’s GI / Brown / Black

Moving on to the Women’s category, Italian athlete Serena Gabrielli highlights the 49kg division as she strives to show the strength of European Jiu-Jitsu in the lightest bracket of the tournament. Ready to thwart her efforts, Diana Teixeira and Brenda Larissa will also be fighting for the 49 kg division gold.

In the 55kg division, Anna Rodrigues and Alexa Yanes come as the favorites, with Larissa Paes and Beatriz Campos also eyeing the top of the podium.

Filled with challenging competitors, the 62kg division has the unstoppable Julia Alves as the favorite for the title, closely followed not only by the Italian Gabriella Ripepi but also by representatives of various nationalities competing at a high level, such as Spain, Poland, Greece, Norway, Ireland, Finland, France, and Switzerland.

Among the competitors of the 70kg division, DreamArt’s Ingridd Sousa and Izadora Silva have a great chance of reaching the podium, with Magdalena Loska, Nia Blackman, and Yara Kakish adding some spice to the bracket.

Finally, in the 94kg division, Yara Nascimento comes as a big name for the gold medal, followed by the likes of Maria Carolina Vicentini and Marcele Catanhede in the heaviest women’s bracket.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour Rome is scheduled to take place over the course of three days, with Amateurs fighting on April 12th, followed by Youths and Masters on the next day, and finally with Professionals showing their skills on April 14th. Rafael Borges, de 18 anos, protagonizou uma estreia avassaladora na faixa-marrom. Apenas uma semana depois de ser graduado ao conquistar o ouro duplo roxa no Mundial 2023, Rafael se consagrou campeão do Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio de Janeiro. O campeonato organizado pela AJP foi disputado nos dias 9, 10 e 11 de junho, na Arena Carioca 1, no Parque Olímpico. 

O atleta da Dream Art finalizou quatro lutas sem sofrer ponto para faturar o ouro na categoria até 85kg. Ele fechou a final com o amigo Gabriel Galvão, seu parceiro de equipe. Em entrevista exclusiva ao GRACIEMAG.com, Rafael Borges comentou os detalhes da estreia impactante na faixa-marrom.

“Foi uma sensação boa, porém não fiquei surpreso com o resultado. Eu sabia que iria ser campeão, chorei no momento da vitória porque eu prometi que venceria e realmente consegui o título”, relembrou Borges.

Ele manteve o embalo após brilhar na Califórnia e optou por se aventurar numa competição de alto nível contra adversários mais experientes.

“O Grand Slam do Rio de Janeiro é um evento renomado, por isso achei crucial participar do torneio. Eu já esperava um bom desempenho. Foi apenas uma semana depois do Mundial, então eu estava bem preparado, só descansei um pouco para competir da melhor forma possível”, afirmou o campeão.

O popular “BG” é natural de Piracicaba, São Paulo, e integra o time da Dream Art desde agosto de 2021. Ele foi formado pelo próprio pai, o faixa-preta Osvaldo Borges, no CT Borges BJJ. O promissor faixa-marrom começou a treinar por insistência do pai para recuperar a autoestima.

“Comecei a treinar forçado pelo meu pai, mas eu odiava no início. Eu era obeso e sofria muito bullying. Graças ao Jiu-Jitsu, recuperei a autoconfiança e nunca mais deixei o esporte”, relatou Rafael.

Borges faz um ano irretocável até o momento. Além do Mundial, ele boletou o ouro duplo no Pan e no Brasileiro na faixa-roxa. Apesar de competir no peso médio em competições da IBJJF, Rafael tem se destacado nos abertos dos campeonatos mais importantes da modalidade.

“Eu me sinto muito bem no peso médio, mas também adoro lutar o absoluto porque é desafiador e isso me deixa ainda mais motivado. Eu sempre penso quando vou competir no aberto: sou menor do que eles, mas vou vencer mesmo assim. Isso é algo que me move”, contou o representante da Dream Art.

O faixa-marrom de 18 anos é conhecido pela pujança física e tem um Jiu-Jitsu clássico. É um passador nato, mas também usa a guarda fechada como trunfo para raspar e finalizar. Rafael tem os estrangulamentos como principais armas de seu arsenal. O ímpeto ofensivo contra oponentes mais pesados tem sido diferencial para coroar o lutador na categoria e no absoluto. Além do lado esportivo, Borges destacou a preparação mental como um dos pontos que mais aprimorou nesta temporada.

“Evoluí a minha parte mental e me aproximei mais da minha família nesse ano. Esses fatores foram essenciais para eu alcançar um desempenho brilhante”, finalizou Rafael Borges.

O Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio começou na última sexta-feira, dia 9 de junho, com lutas dos masters nas faixas roxa, marrom e preta. Apesar de todas as cinco áreas de luta terem tido duelos memoráveis, os destaques do dia ficaram para a divisão master 1, que foi disputada e rendeu aos atletas um belo prêmio em dinheiro, além da glória de conquistar a medalha de ouro no evento.

Um desses destaques foi a final dos 6 kg entre Thiago Marques e José Thiago Barros. Em um duelo travado por dois lutadores renomados, Thiago Marques atacou com precisão no pé para desequilibrar a balança. Com a pegada travada, Thiago pressionou até José bater e conquistou mais um ouro para o Commando Group.

O craque Hiago George também teve atuação de gala. Hiago finalizou todos os adversários a caminho do ouro na categoria 62kg. Na luta final, contra William Chavez, Hiago rapidamente tentou o triângulo e depois trocou para um armlock durante o giro e finalizou com um bote no braço para levar o título.

Outros atletas que saíram vitoriosos após duras batalhas foram Victor Bomfim, que finalizou Gustavo Borges com uma guilhotina, e Yago Espíndola, que teve uma vitória apertada contra Alexandre “Buda” Ribeiro por 2 a 0.

Se o faixa-preta profissional Henrique “Ceconi” Cardoso é um caçador, sua próxima presa será uma das mais desafiadoras desta temporada: O Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio de Janeiro. O evento que abre a temporada 2023/24 do AJP World Tour será iniciado pelos masters no dia 9 de junho, para depois receber os atletas profissionais ao longo dos dias 10 e 11 de junho. Classificado entre estes últimos, Henrique está totalmente focado nos treinos para levar sua melhor versão à Arena Carioca.

Ceconi demonstra muita confiança para o torneio, mesmo reconhecendo o desafio que terá pela frente. Em entrevista à AJP, Henrique explicou o que o mantém confiante, falou sobre suas motivações para vencer o AJP South America e deu uma ideia de seu futuro dentro da federação. Confira a seguir!

AJP: Antes de se inscrever para a ADGS Rio, você passou pelo Sul-Americano como uma tempestade, conquistando os títulos do seu peso e do absoluto. Quais foram os maiores desafios que você enfrentou nesse torneio?

HENRIQUE CECONI: É difícil destacar um desafio entre todos os atletas de alto nível que enfrentei desde a primeira luta. Mas, apesar dos obstáculos, eu me senti pronto para enfrentar esse torneio. Foi algo pessoal para mim, principalmente porque o Sul-Americano aconteceu em Santa Catarina, que é minha casa e onde treino. Queria mostrar minha melhor forma, então me dediquei ao máximo aos treinos e estava pronto para tudo quando pisei no tatame.

Você está sentindo a mesma confiança que o colocou no topo do Sul-Americano?

Sim, consegui manter o mesmo ritmo de treinamento, então acho que estou em uma forma muito melhor para o ADGS Rio. Quando chegar a hora, quero presentear a federação e o público com boas lutas e um desempenho ainda melhor. Espero que, ao final do torneio, ninguém consiga esquecer o nome “Henrique Ceconi”.

O que fez você se apaixonar pelo Jiu-Jitsu? Como o esporte te transformou no guerreiro que agora está pronto para mais um desafio?

O Jiu-Jitsu faz parte da tradição da minha família. Faço parte da segunda geração de faixas-pretas da família Ceconi e treino desde que tinha apenas 10 anos de idade. Por ter começado tão jovem, o Jiu-Jitsu influenciou não só quem eu sou como atleta, mas também como ser humano. A vida nos tatames formou minha personalidade e criou o homem que sou hoje. Acima de tudo, ele me trouxe a resiliência que me permite me destacar entre meus parceiros.

Qual é a origem do apelido, Ceconi?

Tudo começou com meu tio Alexandro Ceconi. Ele era um competidor de verdade, chegando a ser campeão mundial profissional em 2009, e eu sempre o admirei. Mesmo quando era criança, decidi seguir seus passos e as pessoas começaram a me chamar de “Pequeno Ceconi”. Com o passar do tempo e meu crescimento, tanto do ponto de vista físico quanto competitivo, o apelido mudou para “Ceconi” e me deu a honra de continuar o legado da família nos tatames.

Depois do ADGS Rio, podemos contar com você na AJP, viajando pelo mundo para lutar e subir no ranking?

Pela minha experiência, os torneios da AJP são incomparáveis. Eles contribuem para o desenvolvimento profissional do esporte e proporcionam aos atletas um ambiente onde eles se sentem valorizados. Vou lutar para ser o melhor dentro da federação, então sim: com certeza, você me verá por aí.

After succeeding in structuring his personal life in Abu Dhabi, in the UAE, Pablo Mantovani resumed doing what he has always done well: competing. A teacher and athlete full-time, Pablo proved, in practice, that he is sharper than ever as he won the Grand Slam in Moscow, Russia.

In the tournament held by the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro Tour (AJP), Pablo conquered the 69kg division when he defeated Leonardo Saggioro (BTT) in the final, scoring 5 points to Saggioro’s 3, with a guard pass and a back-take. Pablo’s path was not easy: he also had to eliminate Abubakar Khadaev and win a tough battle against Raul Basílio in the semifinal, where the score was 4-4.

In a recent interview, Pablo analyzed his fight with Saggioro, one of the biggest names in the division.

“I’ve been following him for a while,” said Pablo. “He’s done a World Championship final with Rubens Cobrinha, he’s done several tough fights with Rafael Mendes, and because of that, I knew I couldn’t afford to make mistakes. I left my comfort zone, and since I’m a guard player, I decided to take on his guard and try to pass. He has a good guard pass; that was when I decided to move away from his strong game. In the fight, he pulled; I accelerated to pass and take the back. Later, I ended up losing the back adjustments, and he put pressure to try to pass, but I managed to contain his impetus.”

Victory against great athletes, a Grand Slam title and lots of confidence once again. But how did Pablo keep his mind strong even after going a fair bit of time without competing? He explained:

“I believe that now, at 26, I’ve reached the maturity of an adult. What do I mean by that maturity? I mean not feeling pressure. Many times, I lost tournaments due to feeling pressured to win or because my opponent was tough. This time was different; I ignored that factor. I simply went there to have fun. I didn’t put pressure on myself before fighting; I was just a lot more focused this time. I fought moving forward because I wanted to win. Maturity was a determining factor in my victory.

“I read a few times that other athletes became world champions when they lost the fear of making mistakes. I just did what had to be done: I believed in my game and my potential. It made a big difference. I was ready to become champion — that’s my mindset. It’s to fight moving forward, whether on top or on the bottom, without the fear of making mistakes.”

It’s worth noting that when Pablo isn’t teaching at Baniyas Sport Club, he’s training with the Abu Dhabi national team, led by Ramon Lemos, which brings together some BJJ fighters that reside in the UAE. All the methodology that was being used at Atos Jiu-Jitsu gets applied to the team.

An elite light featherweight, Hiago George succeeded in winning gold in his first BJJ tournament in 2021. At the Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi, in the UAE, the Cícero Costha-trained black-belt defeated three strong opponents to walk out with a gold medal and a beautiful eagle-shaped trophy.

First he had to get past Pablo Mantovani (Atos) in order to beat Lucas Pinheiro (Atos) and Diego Pato (Cícero Costha) in the semifinals and final, respectively. All matches were decided by points, which were scored through dominant positions achieved by the champion.

“The announcement of the events was in very short notice, but thank God I always keep myself training very hard,” Hiago said in a recent interview. “I give it 110% every day and stay prepared for any challenges, at any time. I had a very good performance and I’m celebrating a lot with this great title in my career. I’m happy to have fought well against great athletes who are at the top of the category. My game flowed well; I acted on top and on the bottom. My passing game and my guard game are sharp right now.”

The athletes, who were invited by the AJP, the entity that organizes these events in Abu Dhabi, stayed in a hotel in quarantine for 14 days, getting tested daily as a preventive measure against the new coronavirus. Hiago summed up to us the days preceding the tourney:

“It was an impeccable championship done by the AJP. All athletes were treated like professionals, and that’s very gratifying. The sheikh has a unique love for BJJ, and that’s why he values our art so highly. We were quarantined in the hotel, did daily tests because of the new coronavirus, and it all worked out in the end. It’s a new experience to have a mask attached to my face the whole time, but we adapt. I will always do my part so that everything goes back to normal soon, and I can barely wait to return to the UAE to fight again.”

Born in Livramento de Nossa Senhora, in the state of Bahia, the land of great fighters like Junior Cigano, Hiago is now preparing his transition into MMA. He told us he used to box and gave us insight on how he views this new challenge. “MMA has always been something I have a great desire for. To give you an idea, I had contact with the martial art through boxing 14 years ago and, after that, I began doing BJJ, the sport I wound up prioritizing. After achieving great titles in BJJ, the time has come to take another step and kick the challenges up a notch. I’ve already been practicing my standup for some time — I had a fight scheduled — but because of the pandemic, everything got delayed. I’m going to fight in August.”

On how he’s been handling the new kind of training, he said, “The main difference, for me, was adapting BJJ while I strike my opponent, and my conditioning, because it’s a different type of stimulation. You have to be in a very good physical condition to have a good performance in the fight.”

Hiago is not quitting competitive jiu-jitsu. He’s fighting again in June, both in Copa Pódio and in the AJP’s South America event.

The 2018/2019 season for the black belt division in the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour is over. The final competition day took place this Saturday, March 9, in London, England. It was a day like no other for the crowd in the Copper Box Arena and also for those watching all over the world. In some weight classes, new champions were crowned while reigning champions kept their crowns in other divisions. Here’s how each weight class played out.

ADULT MALE BLACK BELT

56kg

Carlos Alberto de Oliveira is still at the top. He fought only once to retain the title in the division. Japan’s Nobuhiro Sawada made it to the final with a 6-2 win over Frederico Guimarães. In the gold medal match, Bebeto was able to sweep twice to secure another gold medal in the season.

62kg

By far the weight class with the most fierce rivalry between the two finalists. João Gabriel Sousa made it to the final through the hard way. He first finished Cleber Fernandes with a choke from the back to meet up with João Miyao in the semifinals. A 1-0 lead on advantages after a 4-4 tie on points was the edge that took Sousa to the final. On the other side, Hiago George finished Pedro Clementino from the back and then outscored Fernando Soares 3-0. The gold medal match was fast paced and Sousa and Hiago went head to head until the very end. One penalty for Hiago gave Gabriel the title after a 4-4 tie on points.

69kg

Paulo Miyao had a tough campaign to retain his title in the weight class. He first finished Alex Jablonski with a choke from the back to reach the semifinals and outscore João Gonçalves 2-1 on advantages. Isaac Doederlein also had a rocky road to the gold medal match. He first caught Max Campos with a triangle and then finished Tiago Bravo with a foot lock. The gold medal match was thrilling and decided by tiny details. Miyao secured the title with a 4-2 lead in a match that could go either way.

77kg

The most crowded weight class of the program had thrills for all. Sweden’s Max Lindblad had a brilliant run to reach the top of the podium. He first beat Tommi Pulkkanen 2-0 to move on to the semifinals after not needing to compete in the quarterfinals. Another 2-0 lead on Pedro Ramalho took Max to the final. On the other side, Guilherme Rocha fought three times to reach the final. He beat Fabricio Barbarotti 2-0, then outscored Martin Aedma 1-0 on advantages and finished David Zaken with a triangle. The gold medal match was very close and Max eventually was able to build a 4-2 lead to secure the gold medal.

85kg

Lucas Barbosa is another reigning champion that kept his crown. In two matches, he first beat Maciej Kozak with an armbar to reach the final. His opponent would be Charles Santos, who beat Igor Sousa 1-0 on advantages. The gold medal match was decided early on with Barbosa managing a takedown and a guard pass to build a 5-0 lead over Charles.

94kg

Kaynan Duarte is back. He fought twice to win the title in the weight class. His first match was against Felipe Mussolino in the semifinals, won with a 4-0 lead. The opponent in the gold medal would be the defending champion Adam Wardzinski, who beat Matheus Godoy 9-2 in the other semifinal. The title was decided with a toehold as Kaynan was able to impose his game on Adam and take the gold medal home.

110kg

Ricardo Evangelista fought once to claim the title in the heaviest weight class. His opponent in the final was Helton Junior, who got there with a referee decision win over Rodrigo Ribeiro. The final was decided by a 3-1 lead on advantages in favor of Evangelista.

ADULT FEMALE BROWN/BLACK BELT

49kg

Mayssa Bastos is back on top. She won her fourth gold medal in the season in two matches. Mayssa first caught Serena Gabrielli with a choke from the back in the semifinals. The opponent for the gold medal would be Argentina’s Julia Pareja, who beat Luna Barea 2-0 on advantages. Mayssa needed less than two minutes to find a choke from the back and secure the title.

55kg

Ana Rodrigues is another new face on the top of the podium. In two matches, she first beat Gabriela Fetcher 1-0 on penalties. Rose El Sharouni made it to the final with a 6-0 lead on advantages over Laura Peretti. The gold medal match was short-lived as Ana found a choke from the back to win.

62kg

For the pleasure of the home crowd, Ffiona Davies had an outstanding performance to claim the gold medal. She first finished Suvi Koikkalainen with a rear naked choke to meet the defending champion Bianca Basílio in the semifinals. Ffiona was able to build a 8-0 lead to make it to the final. On the other side, Larissa Paes finished Michele Oliveira and met up with Charlotte Von Baumgartten in the semifinal, which she won via referee decision. In the final, Ffiona built a 11-4 lead with a guard pass and mount to take the gold medal home.

70kg

Four gold medals in five events in the season for Thamara Silva. She first beat Martina Gramenius 14-2 and then finished Magdalena Loska with a toehold in the semifinal. Samantha Cook made it to the final also in two matches, finishing Jesmine Latrach with an omoplata and then catching Vedha Toscano with a toehold. Thamara found a toehold to finish Samantha in the final and celebrate one more title in the season.

90kg

Gabrieli Pessanha did it all. She is the only athlete to have won the title in her weight class in all five events of the ADGS season. In London,. She fought once to quickly beat Marta Szarecka with a choke from the back in the final.

The final weekend of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Tour season completes this Sunday, March 10, with the lightweight bracket of the Abu Dhabi King of Mats. The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour returns for the 2019/2020 season on June 15-16, with the first event scheduled for Moscow, Russia. Bebeto Oliveira ainda está no topo. Ele lutou apenas uma vez para manter o título na divisão. Do outro lado da chave, o japonês Nobuhiro Sawada chegou à final com uma vitória por 6 a 2 nos pontos sobre Frederico Guimarães. Na luta pela medalha de ouro, Bebeto conseguiu raspar duas vezes para garantir mais um topo de pódio na temporada.

62 kg

De longe, a categoria de peso com maior rivalidade entre os finalistas. Gabriel Sousa chegou à final pelo caminho mais complicado. Ele finalizou Cleber Clandestino com um estrangulamento pelas costas para se encontrar com João Miyao nas semifinais. Com 1 a 0 nas vantagens depois de um empate por 4 a 4 nos pontos definiu Gabriel na final. Do outro lado, Hiago George finalizou Pedro Clementino pelas costas e depois superou Fernando Soares por 3 a 0 nos pontos. A luta final foi agitada do início ao fim. Uma penalidade para Hiago deu a Gabriel o título após um empate por 4 a 4 nos pontos.

Paulo Miyao teve uma campanha difícil para manter seu título na categoria de peso. Ele primeiro finalizou Alex Jablonski com um estrangulamento pelas costas para chegar à semifinal, na qual superou João Gonçalves por 2 a 1 nas vantagens. Isaac Doederlein, atleta do outro lado da chave, também teve uma estrada sinuosa até a disputa pela medalha de ouro. Primeiro ele pegou Max Campos com um triângulo e, em seguida, finalizou Tiago Bravo na chave de pé. A medalha de ouro foi decidida nos detalhes. Miyao garantiu o título com 4 a 2 nas vantagens em uma partida que poderia ir para qualquer um dos lados.

A classe de peso mais lotada do evento reservou emoções para todos. Max Lindblad, da Suécia, teve uma caminhada brilhante na divisão para chegar ao topo do pódio. Primeiro ele venceu o Tommi Pulkkanen por 2 a 0 nos pontos e passou para as semifinais, depois de não ter luta nas quartas-de-final. Outra vitória de 2 a 0, dessa vez sobre Pedro Ramalho, levou Max à final. Do outro lado, Guilherme Rocha lutou três vezes para chegar à final. Ele derrotou Fabricio Barbarotti por 2 a 0 nos pontos, depois superou Martin Aedma por 1 a 0 nas vantagens e finalizou David Zaken no triângulo. A disputa pela medalha de ouro foi muito parelha, mas Max conseguiu contabilizar 4 a 2 nas vantagens para garantir a medalha de ouro.

Lucas Barbosa é outro campeão reinante que manteve sua coroa. Primeiro ele venceu Maciej Kozak com um armlock para chegar à final. Seu adversário seria Charles Negromonte, que venceu Igor Sousa por 1 a 0 nas vantagens no combate anterior. A disputa pela medalha de ouro foi decidida logo no início, com Barbosa aplicando uma queda e uma passagem de guarda e acumular 5 a 0 no placar.

94 kg

Kaynan Duarte está de volta. Ele lutou duas vezes para ganhar o título na categoria de peso. Sua primeira disputa foi contra Felipe Mussolino nas semifinais, na qual venceu com por 4 a 0 nos pontos. Seu adversário pela medalha de ouro seria o atual campeão Adam Wardzinski, que venceu Matheus Godoy por 9 a 2 na outra semifinal. Mayssa Bastos está de volta ao topo. Ela ganhou sua quarta medalha de ouro na temporada ao vencer duas lutas. Mayssa primeiro pegou Serena Gabrielli com um estrangulamento pela costas nas semifinais. A adversária da medalha de ouro seria a argentina Julia Pareja, que derrotou Luna Barea por 2 a 0 nas vantagens. Mayssa precisou de menos de dois minutos para encontrar o estrangulamento pelas costa que garantiria a vitória.

Ana Rodrigues é outra cara nova no topo do pódio. Em duas lutas, ela venceu Gabriela Fetcher por 1 a 0 nas punições. Rose El Sharouni chegou à final com 6 a 0 nas vantagens sobre Laura Peretti. A medalha de ouro ficou com Ana em rápido estrangulamento pelas costas sobre Rose.

62 kg

Para a alegria da torcida, a local Ffiona Davies teve um desempenho excepcional para conquistar a medalha de ouro. Ela finalizou Suvi Koikkalainen com um mata-leão para enfrentar a atual campeã Bia Basílio nas semifinais. Ffiona foi capaz de acumular 8 a 0 nos pontos para chegar à final. Do outro lado, Larissa Paes finalizou Michele Oliveira e encontrou Charlotte Von Baumgartten na semifinal, que Larissa ganhou na decisão do árbitro. Na final, Ffiona construiu um placar de 11 a 4, incluindo uma passagem de guarda e o controle da montada que valeu ouro.

70 kg

Quatro medalhas de ouro em cinco eventos na temporada para Thamara Silva. Ela primeiro venceu Martina Gramenius por 14 a 2 e, em seguida, finalizou Magdalena Loska com um chave de pé na semifinal. Samantha Cook chegou à final também em duas partidas, finalizando Jesmine Latrach na omoplata e depois pegando Vedha Toscano na chave de pé. Thamara finalizou Samantha na final e vibrou com mais um título na temporada.

90 kg

Gabrieli Pessanha foi dominante de ponta a ponta. Ela foi a única atleta a ter conquistado o título em sua categoria de peso em todos os cinco eventos da temporada do Abu Dhabi Grand Slam. Em Londres, ela lutou uma vez para rapidamente bater Marta Szarecka com um estrangulamento pelas costas na final.

O último final de semana da temporada do Grand Slam Tour de Abu Dhabi termina neste domingo, 10 de março, com o King Of Mats. Dez dos melhores competidores leves do mundo lutarão pela glória suprema. A ação começa em torno do meio-dia, horário de Brasília.
