“Acho o Jiu-Jitsu brasileiro excepcional.

O show dos guardeiros começava.

A primeira coisa a fazer é quebrar a postura do adversário.

In the can’t-miss article by Deb Blyth, the fighter comments on a period of depression, when he was sidelined from the cages and rings for a year, a time where he was filled with doubts as to whether to carry on in his career.

“I have a dark side and a light side, like everybody. I’m honest about mine. When I get in the ring, I want to destroy my opponent,” he declares.

“Was I doing the right thing? Is it right or wrong to fight?” he would question himself.

Rolls Gracie departed us twenty-eight years ago. The lessons passed on by the mythological teacher, however, remain ever more up to date, as GRACIEMAG readers now have the opportunity to find out in the latest issue’s cover story.

A number of readers have already remarked on the issue, of which the enthralling cover, with an until-then-unreleased photo of the Gracie, is just the beginning.

Check out the comments, and leave yours, too, after securing a copy of your own. Purchase the new GRACIEMAG today, at bookstores across the USA or get it at home anywhere in the planet by clicking here.

“This time you outdid yourselves with the cover. The photo is simply marvelous, tasteful, and is reminiscent of the cover of Veja magazine after Frank Sinatra passed away, highlighting Sinatra’s blue eyes. Very comely cover.” Felipe Amorim

“All we can do is salute the GRACIEMAG team for the marvelous cover!” Bruno P.

“Truly, the cover is excellent, but even better still is the content. Rolls, even after passing away, teaches us a lot; we owe a lot to him for the Jiu-Jitsu we live and practice. Thank you for existing, GRACIEMAG!” Eric O.

“Excellent article. I remember how Master Rolls preached integrating other styles, which is a lesson to us all, even to the magazine” Isaías BSB

“Rolls the great! I believe he was the wisest and most technical of the whole family!” Egon

“I get the magazine at home and I liked the cover, too. What would it be like if Rolls were still around?” Little Dog

“I witnessed Rolls doing MMA in 1974, or 1975. The man is a myth. He was quick as a cat, while his technique was beyond refined, and the way he would look at you with those blue eyes would intimidate anybody. It was an irreparable loss for Jiu-Jitsu, in the 1980’s. The great master is sorely missed!” Professor Peixotinho
The post What can you learn from Rolls? first appeared on Graciemag.

With 18 wins and two losses, Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez is one of the top lightweight fighters in world MMA. The Jiu-Jitsu purple belt is featured in CHOKE, the MMA supplement magazine now wrapped into GRACIEMAG, now in bookstore and in academies across the planet.

Coming off big wins over stalwart opponents like Shinya Aoki and Rodrigo Damm, among others, Melendez inspires awe for his aggressive ways, with 10 knockouts and one submission on his record.

“I don’t want MMA to become boxing, with boring fights and fighters who throw one punch the whole round. The winner is the guy who finishes the fight, not caring about what’s on the judges’ scorecards. I feel some guys are afraid to lose and I don’t want that for MMA.”

A fan of a good fight, Melendez doesn’t hold back in heaping praise on some other great fighters and – why not? – takes the chance to issue a challenge.

“I like my teammates Nick and Nate Diaz and Jake Shields. But at the moment, I like watching Maurício Shogun a lot. I’ve loved watching him ever since the days of Pride. I’d also love to face Gesias; he’s one of the best in the world,” he remarks.

And the fight with Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante may end up happening, now the Brazilian has signed with Strikeforce.

GRACIEMAG is the magazine that wants to be by your side at every belt promotion, every victory achieved. Even more than that, though, our mission is to help you make it past each stage, succeed in your endeavors.

To do so, GRACIEMAG wants to change and improve and be more enjoyable to readers of all ages, practitioners and Jiu-Jitsu fans from nine to ninety years of age.

Yes, to change, but maintaining the quality you’ve come to appreciate. As our reader Marcos Cunha said right here on GRACIEMAG.com:

“GRACIEMAG is way ahead of the rest. The quality of the texts (most important), articles that break the mold, and I’ve never seen it leave out a standout fighter, regardless of his academy. Not to mention the cutting edge positions and correctness of the information provided. Guys at GRACIEMAG, you are light-years ahead and I haven’t any doubt that this new stage you’re at will be even better!”

That’s why we work hard and take it seriously.

Now the greatest Jiu-Jitsu magazine in the world will also offer the best from the MMA world, as seen through the prism of ground-fighting specialists, by way of a new supplemental magazine.

That’s right, TWO MAGAZINES IN ONE, AND THE PRICE STAYS THE SAME!

And the news doesn’t end there.

Ever since GRACIEMAG expanded its distribution beyond Brazil’s borders in April 2006, the articles were published both in Portuguese and English. Starting this issue, though, the international issue will be published solely in English.

Thus we gain room to deliver readers more content, and to provide our team of artists greater flexibility with which to design pages that are more creative and pleasant to read, an important endowment considering how GRACIEMAG is used as a tool for learning lessons and techniques, like a portable Jiu-Jitsu academy.

Further reason for you to – starting now – secure your NEW GRACIEMAG every month, with ever more succulent articles on Jiu-Jitsu, health and the MMA universe.

Um amigo meu lançou o grito “Werdum time”, aí cantamos para ele “Forrest Time” e ele ficou pulando junto.

O macete do triângulo no vale-tudo?

Queria agradecer a força que a GRACIEMAG me deu.
The post Werdum elogia: “Anderson também ajustou o triângulo com a mão na canela” first appeared on Graciemag.

The post Um papo sobre preparação física para Jiu-Jitsu first appeared on Graciemag.

GRACIEMAG 161 is already at bookstores and academies across the planet. Always looking to provide the greatest amount of information for Jiu-Jitsu practitioners (or not), the magazine serves up an article by Ivan Trindade, “The Perfectly Functioning Body,” a series of pointers on how fighters can improve their technical, competitive and physical performance… Indeed, indispensible reading for your evolution, whether you are a competitor or a practitioner looking to improve your quality of life through Jiu-Jitsu.

“The first meal is fundamental for starting your day out on the right foot. At breakfast, make fruits and carbohydrates the priority,” says Bráulio Estima as one of his tips.

“There’s no point in only thinking about training when you’re training. Off the mat, think about the technical side, what you can do to improve, how to adjust a certain position,” says Marcelo Garcia.

“When training with someone heavier than you, avoid positions that put your body at greater risk of injury,” opines Márcio Feitosa.

“Organize your training in the most varied way possible. That lowers the risk of muscular damage a lot,” prescribes physical conditioning coach Edson Ramalho.

Marcelo Garcia and Fabio Gurgel tell their secrets, too. Photo: Ivan Trindade

“Don’t stop training for long periods of time. After a certain age, returning is more difficult and the risk of injury increases significantly,” recommends Fabio Gurgel.

“Sleep at least eight hours per night. Sleep is essential for proper hormonal function. It improves your memory, learning and even increases your IQ,” professes physical conditioning coach and GRACIEMAG columnist Martin Rooney.
