Há três décadas, o circuito do Jiu-Jitsu esportivo ainda engatinhava. Mas já encantava e inspirava os praticantes, com célebres conferes que ficaram na memória dos pioneiros.

Na Copa Atlântico Sul, Renzo Gracie, então professor da Gracie Barra, enfrentou Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva, em mais um clássico GB x Alliance, realizado no Rio de Janeiro em 1994.

Hoje, Renzo e Gigi são ambos mestres, e ostentam a faixa-coral na cintura.

Aos impacientes, a luta começa no chão aos oito minutos do vídeo.

In a partnership with the AJP, the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship (ADXC) is almost here, bringing the strategy and intricacies of Jiu-Jitsu to an MMA cage with a ruleset that favors aggressive play. The debut event, which is scheduled to take place on October 20th at the Mubadala Arena, in Abu Dhabi, will feature two main events and two co-main events, all pitting renowned Jiu-Jitsu and MMA athletes against each other in five rounds of three minutes.

In the No-Gi main event, two prominent grapplers of the mixed martial arts scene will clash against one another. On one side, the Bellator fighter Neiman Gracie bears the responsibility of honoring not only the most emblematic surname in Jiu-Jitsu’s history but also the training received by his uncle and legend Renzo Gracie. On the other side, the former UFC and WEC champion Ben Henderson is ready to use his wrestling and all the other tools he gained throughout his career to emerge as the winner in the ADXC cage, so his opponent better watch out for that merciless guillotine.

Moving on to the Gi main event, a rivalry from the mats gets another episode. With two World Pro titles in his resumé, DreamArt leader Isaque Bahiense will put his skills to the test against Atos’ Gustavo Batista, who conquered the King of Mats 2019. Their record within the AJP puts Isaque at an advantage, with him winning against Gustavo in both the ADGS Rio 2017 and the ADWPJJC 2018. Meanwhile, Gustavo has seized the victory against Isaque in the aforementioned King of Mats, being the champion after defeating his long-time foe in the finals.

Middleweights Belal Muhammad and Tarek Suleiman will put their no-gi prowess to good use in the co-main event. An American MMA fighter with a Palestine background, Belal Muhammad is a UFC fighter who’s defeated some of the greatest Jiu-Jitsu users in MMA, such as Demian Maia and Gilbert Burns. However, that doesn’t scare the Syrian mixed martial artist Tarek Suleiman, a UAE Warriors powerhouse who boasts 12 wins at the event, six of those being by submission, and who’ll be ready to use his dangerous neck attacks to overcome Belal.

Roberto Cyborg and Anton Minenko will lead another co-main event. Fighting without the gi, the Fight Sports leader Roberto Cyborg will bring his powerful takedowns and sweeps to the ADXC cage with two clear goals in mind: defeat his opponent and put on a great show while doing it. It’s up to the Australian black belt Anton Minenko to use his game, which has landed
him several titles within the AJP, to pull the brakes on the Brazilian’s ambitions and earn what could be one of his greatest achievements.

For the preliminary bouts, the action doesn’t die down. In a no-gi match, the “Pride of Palestine” Abdul-Kareem Al-Sewady brings the extensive arsenal that earned him 15 victories in MMA to fight Islam Reda, the “Egyptian Zombie” that has recently made waves in the UAE Warriors with two memorable wins via submission. Meanwhile, seasoned heavyweight and ADWPJJC champion Tayane Porfírio will put on her gi and head to the Mubadala Arena to seize yet another victory for her resumé, but she’ll have to face Giovana Jara, a new but well-known black belt that recently took the ADGS Miami by storm, submitting all the opponents in her weight division.

Two very well-matched gi duels promise to turn up the heat at the ADXC. In the welterweight division, Fabricio Hokage; Andrey comes to represent Alliance with his amazing Jiu-Jitsu. His opponent will be the experienced Marcio Andre, from Nova União, who has countless titles and memorable duels in his career.

In the lightweight division, prominent UAE athlete Zayed Alkhateeri will face one of the main names in his division, the versatile Thalison Soares, in a fight that Jiu-Jitsu fans are eager to watch.

In another no-gi fight, Polish Marcin Held, an athlete with stints in the UFC, Bellator, and PFL, brings his dangerous game of leg locks to face UFC athlete Guram Kutateladze, a Swede known as the Georgian Viking. Still without the cloth, Jonnatas Gracie arrives on the card to represent Atos against the dangerous Natan Chueng, an athlete from the growing Fratres team. Back in the gi, AJP champions Fellipe Andrew and Uanderson Ferreira promise to shake up the ADXC cage with a duel in the middleweight division.

To top it off, two women’s gi duels are scheduled to start the card off on the right foot. In the middleweight division, the champion Luiza Monteiro comes to represent Atos against fellow black belt Nathalie Ribeiro, from CheckMat. Before that, representing the new generation of Jiu-Jitsu, we’ll have a fight between Sarah Galvão, the daughter of Jiu-Jitsu champions André and Angelica Galvão, and the fierce Vitória Gabriella, from Castro Team. Last but not least, heavyweights collide in a no-gi duel, with Dan Manasoui representing the famous New Wave Jiu-Jitsu, against GFTeam black belt Antonio Assef.

The debut edition of the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship will feature 14 matches in a tournament of unprecedented scale within the sport. The ADXC and its cage will completely take over the Mubadala Arena on October 20th, gifting the attending crowds a show they won’t soon forget. Faixa-coral de Jiu-Jitsu e lenda nos esportes de combate, tanto com kimono quanto no antigo vale-tudo, o mestre Rickson Gracie revelou, em entrevista ao canal de Kyra Gracie no Youtube, que foi diagnosticado com doença de Parkinson há dois anos. 

O campeão invicto da família e filho de Helio revelou ao mundo que sente os sintomas da doença, mas reiterou que está pronto para enfrentar qualquer adversidade imposta no decorrer de sua vida e pretende ainda transformar mais vidas por meio do Jiu-Jitsu. Confira a seguir o depoimento do ídolo Rickson Gracie. 

“Há dois anos eu fui diagnosticado com Parkinson. Então, muita coisa que eu gostaria de fazer fisicamente eu estou diminuindo. Para mim não foi nada traumático [receber esse diagnóstico da doença]. Estou pronto para qualquer coisa na minha vida. Eu aceito os meus erros e as minhas vitórias. Eu aceito bem a minha vida, então estou feliz hoje. Mas essa deficiência neurológica abriu os meus olhos para a minha idade e para a minha realidade, que não mudou muito de lá para cá, mas tenho um certo tremor na mão, uma certa deficiência de movimentação, que antes eu não tinha. É uma coisa que não me incomoda muito, porque a minha motivação para acordar amanhã e trabalhar continua. Então, vejo isso como um presente de Deus para ver o que eu vou fazer. Se eu te der muito dinheiro e você fizer coisas erradas, não te serviu de nada, mas se eu te der muito dinheiro e você fizer coisas boas eu fico orgulhoso. Deus me deu agora uma situação que tenho que transformar para o bem. E a reação que tenho mais importante hoje em dia na minha vida é expressar minha gratidão pelo Jiu-Jitsu, continuar trabalhando pelo Jiu-Jitsu para fortalecer as pessoas e transformar a maneira da prática para que seja mais acessível para as pessoas que mais precisam. Então, eu vejo que estou nadando de braçadas em um oceano azul perfeito aguardando o próximo dia sem muita preocupação”, compartilhou o Gracie.

Aos 63 anos, Rickson foi um lutador implacável em seus tempos áureos e colecionou admiradores ao redor do mundo graças ao seu Jiu-Jitsu finalizado e à mentalidade inabalável que o moldou desde jovem. 

O paizão de Rockson e Kron se destacou como o principal representante da família nos esportes de combate nas décadas de 1980 e 1990 e emplacou vitórias memoráveis no Jiu-Jitsu e no vale-tudo. Que o mestre siga a enfrentar este oponente com a mesma tenacidade que o coroou nos tatames.

A frase reflete o orgulho de Muzio de Angelis com a conquista da irmã, a intrépida Cesalina Gracie, que inspirou a comunidade do Jiu-Jitsu com uma bela lição. Cesalina chegou ao pico do Monte Everest, localizado na fronteira do Nepal com o Tibete, no dia 22 de maio. O Everest é a montanha mais alta do planeta e fica a 8848 metros acima do nível do mar. 

Confira a seguir o depoimento da neta de Carlos Gracie e irmã da fera Muzio De Angelis:

“Essa foi minha primeira montanha. A maior de todas. A Deusa Mãe. O Everest me recebeu de braços abertos e com vistas deslumbrantes. Mas logo passou a testar cada grama de força e determinação existente em mim.

“Durante 45 dias, enfrentei desafios quase insuportáveis. Desde ser pega por duas avalanches, cair em uma fenda, escalar com ventos de 70 km/h e enfrentar temperaturas abaixo de -40ºC até outras circunstâncias mortais que surgiram no caminho. E, acredite ou não, isso foi só o começo.

“A maior ameaça de todas, e a que tinha o poder de pôr um fim imediato à minha expedição na montanha a qualquer momento, era a minha mente.

“A batalha constante entre os perigos à frente, o medo de morrer, a exaustão, a desidratação, o corpo completamente esgotada, a dificuldade de respirar e todos os fatores que indicavam que eu estava em um ambiente extremamente inóspito, me fizeram questionar por que eu estava ali e até onde eu estava disposta a ir?

“E minha resposta, toda vez que me sentia assustada, ameaçada, com frio, cansada, triste, era a mesma: Eu vou ficar no topo do mundo!”

BJJ is a martial art rich in details, and a simple change in grip and body position can make all the difference in your game. That’s what Renzo Gracie taught in a 2017 seminar in Florianópolis, Brazil. He showed a simple detail to a grip that impressed even Demian Maia, who was helping him demonstrate it. Renzo simply trades the traditional kata-gatame grip for a simpler, more functional one. It was immediately named the kataga-renzo. Currently ascending in the UFC, Kron Gracie built his finishing style in BJJ tournaments, both classical and no-gi. The son of Rickson Gracie has, for example, an ADCC title.

In the under-77kg division of ADCC 2013, held in China, Kron beat Andy Wang, Garry Tonon, JT Torres and Otavio Souza to bag the gold medal. His quarterfinal match, in particular, sticks out in our minds.

A young athlete of Renzo Gracie Academy at the time, and nowadays a One Championship belt holder, Tonon had a great fight with Kron. The Brazilian brought danger with a supertight armbar, which Tonon foiled, but the American ended up caught in a merciless rear naked choke.

Mais um Gracie terá a árdua missão de levar o nome da família ao maior evento de MMA do planeta. Filho do mestre Rickson Gracie, Kron Gracie fará seu debute no UFC na madrugada de domingo (17) para segunda-feira (18), por volta da meia-noite, contra Alex “Bruce Leeroy” Caceres em edição realizada em Phoenix, Arizona, transmitida com exclusividade pelo Combate a partir das 19h30 de Brasília.

Dono de um cartel modesto de quatro vitórias no MMA (todas por finalização), com uma luta realizada por ano desde 2014 e sem atuar desde o Rizin do Ano Novo de 2016 para 2017, Kron terá do outro lado do cage o já rodado Alex Caceres, que tem 26 lutas de MMA (14v, 11d, 1nc), 19 delas no UFC. Como o astro do Jiu-Jitsu pretende vencer sua estreia? Analisamos suas quatro lutas para entender melhor o estilo da fera nos cages.

Com o Jiu-Jitsu afiado ao melhor estilo Rickson Gracie, com posições de execução precisa como mandam as cartilhas clássicas da família, o chão é certamente o melhor caminho para Kron, mas chegar ao solo no MMA pode ser complicado, principalmente para um atleta que tem o chão como base forte. Adversário mais sagazes colocam em prática exaustivos treinos de sprawl para evitarem serem postos de costas no solo, mas Kron desenvolveu seus truques ao longo dos anos.

Em suas primeiras lutas, Kron fazia uso do famoso pisão apresentado ao mundo por Royce Gracie nos primórdios do UFC. Ao se aproximar, cinturava e levava para o chão, e trabalhava seu fino Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono. Contudo, ao evoluir no esporte, Kron ganhou mais confiança em pé, e adicionou o jogo de boxe para encurtar e trabalhar suas quedas.

A influência dos irmãos Diaz, craques na trocação que treinam Jiu-Jitsu com Cesar Gracie, trouxe para Kron alguns truques para chegar ao seu objetivo. Depois de trocar em pé na distância, Kron joga o cruzado e segura na nuca do adversário, para golpear no clinche antes de aplicar suas quedas, e por vezes até puxar para a guarda.

O jogo de finalização dispensa análises. Com transições versáteis, como as já vistas tanto de kimono quanto sem na época de competidor, Kron avança para pegar em posições clássicas: triângulo, armlock e mata-leão já foram aplicados pela fera no MMA.

Contudo, além da análise técnica, a preparação e o emocional de ambos os atletas conta muito para o resultado final. Será que Kron irá manter sua tranquilidade no maior palco do MMA mundial? Será que Caceres irá quebrar o hype criado no filho do ilustre Rickson? Comente conosco!

Back in 2017, Brazilian actor Cauã Reymond revealed his dream to Graciemag: to play Rickson Gracie in a film. And now that dream may be closer to coming true.

Rickson’s life is indeed being turned into a movie, as director José Padilha (Elite Squad, Narcos, Robocop) told HollywoodReporter.com. There is no timetable yet, but it is known that the picture will be available to Netflix subscribers.

“Rickson Gracie is one of the greatest fighters of all time and we are honored to share his story,” said producer Greg Silverman.

The feature-length film is likely to be called Dead or Alive and will deal with the entire timeline of BJJ, starting with Conde Koma’s training in Japan. Koma, circa 1917, became teacher to the Gracie family’s pioneer, Carlos, who was Rickson’s uncle and Helio’s older brother.

This won’t be Rickson’s first time in a movie, though. Twenty years ago, he was featured in a beautiful documentary called Choke.

A vida de Rickson vai mesmo virar filme, conforme o diretor José Padilha (“Tropa de Elite”, “Narcos”, “Robocop”) confirmou ao site HollywoodReporter.com. Não há datas ainda, mas o filme será exibido pela Netflix.

“Rickson Gracie é um dos maiores lutadores de todos os tempos”, elogiou o executivo Greg Silverman, da Stampede, produtora responsável pelo filme. “Nós estamos honrados por compartilhar sua história”.

O longa-metragem deve se chamar “Vivo ou morto” (“Dead or alive”), e vai abarcar a história do Jiu-Jitsu desde os treinos de Conde Koma no Japão. Koma, por volta de 1917, tornou-se o professor de Carlos Gracie, o pioneiro da família – tio de Rickson e irmão mais velho de Helio Gracie.

Another member of the Gracie family is about to launch a career in mixed martial arts. Following in the footsteps of his brothers, cousins and uncles, this week Robson Gracie Jr. signed a contract to debut in the Bellator organization.

Robsinho will be making his debut in the sport, although date and opponent have yet to be determined. A black-belt in BJJ, the youngest brother of Renzo Gracie has sharpened his boxing at traditional Rio de Janeiro school Nobre Arte, on top of training MMA and no-gi BJJ at Renzo Gracie Academy in New York.

By signing with Bellator, Robsinho joins his cousins Neiman and Khonry Gracie in making up the family’s new generation of MMA fighters.
