Durante a coletiva de imprensa que sucedeu o Bellator 123, que teve o brasileiro Patrício “Pitbull” Freire como novo campeão dos penas, o presidente da organização, Scott Coker, revelou como andam as negociações para tirar da aposentadoria dois lendários craques do MMA.

A ideia do cartola é resgatar Randy Couture, 51 anos, e o russo Fedor Emelianenko, 37 anos, para um duelo explosivo.

“Essa é uma luta que eu, pessoalmente, adoraria ver, mas não sei se vai acontecer. Tudo que posso dizer é que estamos conversando com o M-1, empresa russa que gerencia a carreira de Fedor, mas isso é tudo que tenho para dizer neste momento sobre isso”, contou Coker.

Ex-campeão dos pesados e dos meio-pesados do UFC, Randy Couture não calça as luvas desde 2011, quando foi derrotado por Lyoto Machida no UFC 129. Em entrevista recente, o cinquentão Couture confirmou que ainda sonha enfrentar Fedor – de preferência em luta sem kimono, em eventos como o Metamoris.

Fedor Emelianenko viveu tempos de glórias no Pride, quando passou dez anos invicto e foi campeão da divisão dos pesados. O Último Imperador encerrou a carreira com 34 vitórias e quatro derrotas – para feras como Fabricio Werdum, Antonio Pezão e Dan Hendo. Sua última luta profissional foi em 2012, quando nocauteou Pedro Rizzo pelo M-1 Global.

And now it’s official.

Strikeforce will hold their Jan. 12 event, Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine, and it will be the final event by the company on Showtime, the MMA promotion announced today.

“Since 2009, Showtime has been a great partner and we appreciate its support of Strikeforce and our athletes,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said in the release. “For our final event, we’ve loaded the card with some outstanding fights. This is going to be a memorable night for the sport of mixed martial arts.”

Reports of Strikeforce’s demise began to surface over a month ago, but representatives from Showtime have continued to say MMA will continue on the cable company. Today’s announcement means that Showtime may carry on with the sport, but it will not include Strikeforce.

The Jan. 12 card is finalized with 11 fights, and is headlined by welterweight champion Nate Marquardt defending his title against Tarec Saffiedine. In the co-main event, Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier will face Dion Staring.

One of the previously reported matches, Lorenz Larkin vs. Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, was removed from the card, but the release did not stipulate why. GRACIEMAG.com confirmed with Larkin’s manager, Arnold DeWitt, that the fighter sustained a knee injury in training and won’t be able to return for several weeks.

According to Strikeforce’s official website, Jacare’s new opponent will be Ed Herman.

The final Strikeforce event will take place at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Capturing her second World Championship title as a purple belt, last weekend in California, Jiu-Jitsu heavyweight Cris Cyborg, representing Atos Jiu-Jitsu, while still in the Long Beach Pyramid, stated her desire to face the judoka Ronda Rousey in MMA. Aware that the American, who was present in the stands, had made statements saying she would take Cyborg’s arm home with her, the Strikeforce fighter fired back in an interview with Marcus Kowal of the Studio MMA website.

“I hope to face Ronda Rousa. I really want this fight. I feel she talks too much. I don’t like talk—I’d rather fight. I always want to fight for my fans. But if Ronda wants my arm, I want her head,” says the Brazilian in the interview.

Cris took a look at what the fight would be like, the one Strikeforce top brass Scott Coker guaranteed will go down soon, according to the website MMA Fighting .

“I don’t think she likes getting hit in the face. She has good takedowns and armbars, but it’s a good matchup for me because I like punching in the face,” she adds.

A welterweight when competing in MMA, Cris Cyborg is still under suspension for banned substances, only being cleared to fight again on December 16. Now Ronda Rousey tapped out Miesha Tate with an armbar in capturing the promotion’s bantamweight belt back in March.

Bicampeã mundial na faixa-roxa no último fim de semana, na Califórnia, a peso pesado do Jiu-Jitsu Cris Cyborg (Atos Jiu-Jitsu) disse, ainda na Pirâmide de Long Beach, que deseja enfrentar a judoca Ronda Rousey no MMA. Sabendo que a americana, que estava por lá na arquibancada, havia comentado que levaria seu braço para casa, a fera do Strikeforce deu o troco numa entrevista ao repórter Marcus Kowal, do site Studio MMA.

“Minha esperança é enfrentar Ronda Rousey, eu quero muito essa luta. Eu penso que ela fala demais. Não gosto de falar, prefiro lutar. Eu quero sempre lutar para meus fãs. Mas se Ronda quer o meu braço, eu quero a cabeça dela”, disse a brasileira.

Cris analisou como seria a luta, que o chefão do Strikeforce, Scott Coker, garantiu que vai rolar em breve, de acordo com o site MMA Fighting.

“Eu acho que ela não gosta de receber socos na cara. Ela tem boas quedas e chaves de braço, mas é uma boa luta para mim, porque gosto de dar socos na cara”, completou.

Peso meio-médio no MMA, Cris Cyborg ainda cumpre suspensão por doping, que vai até o dia 16 de dezembro. Já Ronda Rousey finalizou Miesha Tate com um armlock e conquistou o cinturão dos galos da organização, no mês de março.

Cotada para ser a próxima grande rival da campeã dos penas Cris Cyborg, a judoca americana Ronda Rousey já diz por aí estar empolgada com a chance de enfrentar a brasileira, mesmo após o nocaute arrasador de Cris no fim de semana, em 16 segundos.

“Eu gostaria de lutar com ela sim, e acho que seria fácil para ela baixar de peso se ela topar, mas isso é decisão dela” disse a bela a Dave Meltzer, editor do Yahoo Sports.

Ocorre que Ronda, 24 anos, apesar de lutar no peso-pena, tem baixado para o peso galo, em busca do cinturão de Miesha Tate – enquanto Cris tem tido dificuldades para bater o limite do peso-pena. Nada impede que a luta, no entanto, seja realizado no peso pena mesmo.

A confiança de Ronda, de 24 anos, não é balela. Judoca medalhista olímpica (bronze em Pequim, prata no Mundial do Rio 2007), ela soma sete finalizações em sete lutas de MMA – quatro no MMA profissional.

Cris Cyborg também já topou testar o jogo de chão da americana. “Para esta luta (contra Ronda) eu teria de fazer um esforço tremendo para chegar ao limite de peso dos galos. Talvez eu faça primeiro uma luta com peso intermediário (entre o pena e o galo) para ir me adaptando e, depois chegue aos peso correto. Mas vou me esforçar muito para isso. Ela fala demais”, disse Cyborg.

Por enquanto, a próxima missão de Ronda é tentar arrancar o cinturão de Miesha Tate, campeã peso-galo.

Para o presidente do Strikeforce, Scott Coker, a luta entre Cris e Ronda vai sair, mas no futuro. “O nome de Ronda Rousey segue crescendo, mas acredito que ela ainda lutará por um tempo no peso-galo, mesmo tendo expressado o interesse em lutar pelo cinturão peso-pena em algum momento”, disse. “Já a Cris Cyborg fechou para mais quatro lutas, e estamos buscando em todo o planeta adversárias dignas para desafiá-la no peso médio, mas isso não é tarefa fácil. Ela é o Mike Tyson do MMA feminino”, elogiou Coker.

Tipped to be the next to take on Cris Cyborg, American judoka Ronda Rousey has made it known that she’s excited about having the chance to face the Brazilian, even after Cris’s knockout win in just 16 seconds last weekend.

“I really would like to fight her, and I think it would be easy for her to drop weight if she agrees to it, but that’s up to her,” Ronda told Yahoo Sports editor Dave Meltzer.

It happens that Ronda, although having fought at featherweight, has dropped to bantamweight in pursuit of Miesha Tate’s title, while Cyborg has trouble making the featherweight limit—nothing keeping the fight from happening at featherweight, though.
Now the 24-year-old Ronda has reason to be confident. A bronze medalist at the Beijing Olympics and silver medalist at the 2007 World Championship in Rio, she has won all seven of her MMA fights by submission—four of them professional.

Cris Cyborg has also agreed to test her ground game against the stalwart judo stylist. “For this fight [against Ronda] I’ll have to make a major effort to make it to bantamweight. Perhaps I’ll take a fight at a catch weight [between bantam and featherweight] first to adapt and later make it to the right weight. But I’ll make an effort to do so,” said Cyborg.

For the time being, Ronda’s next mission is to try and get her hands on bantamweight champion Miesha Tate’s belt.

To Strikeforce president Scott Coker, the fight between Cris and Ronda will be made—but further down the road. “Ronda Rousey’s name has been on the rise, but I feel she’ll fight awhile longer at bantamweight, even though she has expressed interest in fighting for the featherweight title some time,” he said. “Now Cris Cyborg has signed for four more fights, and we’re scouring the planet for worthy opponents to challenge her at middleweight, but that’s no easy task. She’s the Mike Tyson of female MMA,” said Coker in praise.

A empresa Forza, LLC, uma subsidiária da Zuffa, LLC, que detém a marca Ultimate Fighting Championship, anunciou oficialmente nesta segunda-feira, dia 14, via conferência mundial de imprensa, a compra da marca Strikeforce.

Junto com o anúncio, Lorenzo Fertitta, presidente da Zuffa e presidente do Conselho do UFC, fez questão de ressaltar que, por enquanto, o Strikeforce não irá se fundir com o UFC, permanecendo com evento e marcas separadas, assim como todos os contratos de lutadores e acordos de transmissão pela TV serão honrados.

“Nós pretendemos operar o Strikeforce como uma empresa separada, assim como nós fizemos com o WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) por muitos anos”, explicou Lorenzo para depois falar da permanência do atual CEO do Strikeforce, Scott Coker: “Estamos ansiosos para trabalhar com ele e com toda sua equipe para continuarmos a fornecer conteúdo de qualidade para os fãs de MMA. Sentimos que, juntos, podemos continuar a expandir tanto o Strikeforce, quanto o UFC”, comentou.

Dana White, presidente do UFC, também fez coro e garantiu que a principal intenção é sempre levar as melhores lutas para os fãs em todo mundo e explicou que, com o Strikeforce, o MMA pode chegar a vários países. “Temos trabalhado duro para fazer do MMA o esporte que mais cresce no mundo. Adquirir os ativos do Strikeforce nos permite continuar a desenvolver este esporte mundialmente”, explicou.

Atualmente, o Strikeforce tem 16 eventos por ano nos Estados Unidos. Segundo Dana White, a organização continuará a fazê-lo e os fãs podem esperar por lutas emocionantes com seus atletas favoritos. Embora atualmente não haja planos para trazer lutadores do Strikeforce para o UFC, uma nova estratégia para reforçar o elenco está sendo desenvolvida.

“Este é um dia importante para o MMA. Estamos muito animados para trabalhar com Lorenzo Fertitta, Frank Fertitta, Dana White e todos do UFC para fazer do MMA o maior esporte do mundo. Os fãs podem ficar tranquilos, pois vamos trabalhar para melhorar ainda mais a qualidade das lutas”, explicou Scott Coker.

Gesias Cavalcante is all set to face Josh Thomson at the October 9 Strikeforce show in San Jose, California. The fighter spoke of the fight at the promotional press conference and promises to show all the heart and technique that put him at the top of the lightweight pecking order, winning the K-1 Hero’s Grand Prix twice over. How do you feel about fighting in the United States?

I want to thank Strikeforce and Scott Coker for getting me back to the USA. It’s been a while since I fought here. It’s a pleasure to me, even more so because Josh is a former champion and this will be a tough fight. It’s no easy task, but life’s not easy. I like challenges and I think the fans want to see this fight. As the fans want to see the fight, I’m happy to be fighting in the USA at Strikeforce.

Do you feel any pressure for this fight?

I don’t feel any pressure, especially because people here don’t know me and don’t know what to expect. So there’s no pressure at all. There’s more pressure when people know you and expect you to do well. I’ve been through situations where I felt pressure from the fans, who create a lot of expectations. I’m not putting any pressure on myself to do well. I know what I’m capable of. I know I train hard and have an excellent training camp, one of the best in the world. I have a great team. I just need to keep focused, in control and balanced.

My game works well in the cage, even better than in the ring” Gesias

You’ve only been fighting in the ring lately. What are your thoughts on making the move to the cage?

I train in the cage a lot. Most of my teammates fight in the cage, so I train with them. My game works well in the cage, sometimes even better than in the ring. I feel there are pros and cons to the cage and ring, but I always see the pros in my favor. I’m working hard and nothing is different. A fight’s a fight wherever it may be.

Will you be going for the finish?

I’ll have my eye on everything. We’re both complete fighters and the fight could play out standing or on the ground. So I’m not focused on any one thing in particular. My concern is fighting hard for 15 minutes. If he makes a mistake, I’m going to capitalize on it and win.

Do you feel better now, after suffering so many injuries?

I feel fine. I fought in July. It was a good fight, lasted 15 minutes, but I felt a bit rusty due to injury. But now I’m healthy, much more confident mentally and physically. I’m training well, thank God.

Is it harder to fight in your opponent’s backyard?

I’m always fighting in someone else’s territory. I know it’s different in Japan, where everyone is more calm and respectful. Here people shout and boo. But a fight’s a fight. I’m fine with that.

O que acha de lutar nos Estados Unidos?

Quero agradecer ao Strikeforce e ao Scott Coker por me trazer de volta aos EUA. Faz muito tempo que eu não luto aqui. É um prazer para mim, ainda mais porque o Josh é um ex-campeão e vai ser uma luta dura. Não é uma tarefa fácil, mas a vida não é fácil. Eu gosto do desafio e acho que os fãs querem ver essa luta. Como os fãs desejam assistir a esta luta, eu estou feliz por combater nos EUA e no Strikeforce.

Você está se sentindo pressionada para este combate?

Eu não sinto pressão, especialmente porque as pessoas não me conhecem e não sabem o que esperar. Portanto, não há pressão alguma. Há mais pressão quando as pessoas conhecem e esperam que você vá fazer bem. Já passei por situações de pressão dos fãs, que criam muitas expectativas. Eu não estou colocando pressão em mim para ir bem. Eu sei do meu potencial. Eu sei que estou treinando forte e tenho um excelente camp de treinamento, um dos melhores do mundo. Tenho uma grande equipe. Eu apenas preciso manter o foco, o controle e o equilibrado.

Você vinha se apresentando apenas em ringues. Acha que vai se adaptar bem ao cage?

Eu treino muito na gaiola. A maioria dos meus colegas luta na jaula, então eu treino com eles. Meu jogo funciona bem no cercado, às vezes, até melhor do que no ringue. Eu acho que no cage ou no ringue existem prós e contras, mas eu sempre vejo os prós a meu favor. Estou trabalhando duro e nada é diferente. Luta é luta em qualquer lugar.

Vai buscar a finalização?

Eu vou olhar para tudo. Ambos somos lutadores completos e a luta pode ser em pé ou no chão. Então, não estou focado em nada em particular. Estou preocupado em lutar duro por 15 minutos. Quando ele cometer um erro, eu posso agarrá-lo e vencer.

Se sente melhor depois de tantas lesões?

Estou me sentindo bem. Lutei em julho. Foi uma luta boa, de 15 minutos, mas me senti bem enferrujado por causa da lesão. Mas agora eu estou saudável, muito mais confiante mentalmente e fisicamente. Estou treinando bem, graças a Deus.

Lutar na casa do adversário é mais difícil?

Estou sempre lutando no território de alguém. Sei que é diferente no Japão, onde todos são tranquilos e respeitosos. Aqui as pessoas gritam e vaiam. Mas luta é luta. Estou bem com isso.

Strikeforce is the promotion boasting the best female MMA fighters in the world. On August 13, in Pheonix, Arizona, an unprecedented event will take place. Taking center stage for the Grand Prix challenge will be Miesha Tate, Carina Damm, Hitomi Akano and Maiju Kujala.

The winner will place second in line for a shot at the middleweight belt. This Friday the divisional title will be up for grabs, when Sarah Kaufman faces off with Roxanne Modafferi. The winner of that bout will then go on to fight Marloes Coenen, and the winner of that one will face the tournament winner.

The female fights will kick off the August 13 broadcast with the tournament semifinals. The grand finale will take place shortly after the evening’s main event, between Joe Riggs and Louis Taylor. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker is confident in the tournament’s success:

“We are going to fast-track these four talented prospects in a quest to determine the best in this deep women’s division. Having all four women square off on one night with the chance to separate themselves from the pack is what Strikeforce Challengers is all about,” says Coker.

The bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Fabrício Werdum made MMA history. Werdum, by submitting the Russian in the very first round, put an end to his opponent’s 10-year-unbeaten record.

“I’d become something of an idol. But everyone loses. I’m a human being like everybody else and, should God will it, I’ll win the next one,” said the Russian in lament at the post-fight press conference.

Strikeforce president Scott Coker is already toying with the idea of a rematch, which he feels could be lucrative for the event and for Werdum.

“I believe most people want to see this rematch. That’s what I feel. Fedor will be back and I wouldn’t want to face him in a rematch. He wants revenge.”

The M1 Global management company that handles Fedor asked for an immediate rematch, and Werdum accepts:

“I’ll fight him again, no problem. Further ahead we’ll see if it will be possible.

O combate entre Fedor Emelianenko e Fabrício Werdum é histórico para o MMA. Werdum, ao finalizar o russo ainda no primeiro round, terminou com uma invencibilidade do adversário que durava quase dez anos. 

“Me transformei numa espécie de ídolo. Mas todo mundo perde. Sou um ser humano normal como qualquer outro e, se for a vontade de Deus, vou vencer a próxima luta”, lamentou o russo na coletiva de imprensa após a derrota. 

Dirigente do Strikeforce, Scott Coker já imagina a revanche do combate, algo que acredita ser lucrativo para o evento e para Werdum. 

“Acredito que mais pessoas vão querer ver essa revanche. É o que eu sinto. Fedor vai voltar e não gostaria de enfrentá-lo numa revanche. Ele quer vingança.” 

Empresários da M1 Global que agenciam Fedor pedem uma revanche imediata. A respeito disso, Werdum deve aceitar o compromisso. 

“Luto com ele novamente, não tem problema. Mais para frente veremos como isso será possível.”
