Deu tudo certo e me consagrei bicampeão do Pan na faixa-preta.

* Colaborou: Arthur Castro
The post Manaus e o investimento em Jiu-Jitsu que sempre dá retorno first appeared on Graciemag.

Bibiano Fernandes, a 32-year-old black belt, boasts a game of lightning-quick transitions and major explosiveness. And now, after a sterling career on the mats and 12 wins in 15 fights in MMA, “The Flash” shares his performance secrets in GRACIEMAG #187.

In the interview, Bibiano recollects how his nickname first surfaced, in fighters’ favorite Jiu-Jitsu magazine.

GRACIEMAG.com sifted through the FACE TO FACE section to bring you a couple of the more enticing excerpts, in case you haven’t picked up a copy at your local bookstore yet:

1. How to be a speedy fighter:

“I think that speed in martial arts is part explosiveness, part in your head. Before going in to fight I’d try and analyze the whole fight in my head. That way, I think I was always a step ahead of my opponent in thought. And that way you push the pace in the fight. Even when I’d roll with a teammate in training, I’d have two, three submission options in mind,” says Bibiano.

2. How do you enhance your lung capacity?

“I think that speed in martial arts is part explo When I started training with Osvaldo Alves I’d do a lot of running on the sand, sprints on the beach. We’d do a light run and then do 20 under-20-second sprints. But want to know what the secret to endurance is, boss? Let’s say you’re in the middle of a roll at training and you start feeling fatigued. Your mind says, “I’m done.” Well, that happens to everyone. And what do you do? You stop or ask to stop. That’s wrong; your body’s being blocked by your mind. The big secret is to push on,” the Amazonas State native teaches, among other ultra-useful odds and ends.

It was another drubbing by Jiu-Jitsu: 68 to 2. Twas by this “score” that Brazilian minister Luiz Fux was approved by the senate as a member of the highest level of authority in the nation, the Federal Supreme Court, the crème de la crème of Brazil’s judges.

Fux, who was nominated by President Dilma and was, according to “Veja” magazine, one of supreme minister Antonio Palocci’s favorites, was reviewed for four hours by the Brazilian Justice Commission and received a standing ovation by all 23 on the panel. In the end, he burst in tears, like a champion upon winning.

The win was also part Jiu-Jitsu’s, as Fux is one of the most vehement defenders of the art, which he has practiced for thirty years with Master Osvaldo Alves, ever since becoming a judge.

Interviewed by Luca Atalla in GRACIEMAG # 93, he explains how the gentle art helped him deal with the hardships he encountered in making it to the top. Check out the article published in 2004 in its entirety:

“I always make a point of holding Jiu-Jitsu in the regard it deserves. Because unpleasant situations happen, people fight in the street and instantly the accusation is made that they are practitioners. But I don’t believe it. After all, all we have to do is take a look at the greatest idols in the sport to see that, with extremely rare exceptions, no one ever fights. This is Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art for well-meaning people.

“The start of my relationship with Jiu-Jitsu was interesting. After jogging on Copacabana beach I went to take a swim and left my things on the beach, and they stole my watch. A lady pointed out the thieves to me, but it was a big group and I felt intimidated, so I didn’t do anything about it. That eventing, teaching class at PUC-Rio University, I remarked about it and expressed regret about the powerlessness I felt. So a student offered to take a stance with the help of some friends of his who new the area.

“And that weekend, along with future black belts Sérgio Penha and Márcio Santos, we approached the group. I ended up recovering my watch without incident, and I noticed how the group was terrified by the fighters being there, even though they weren’t big. I asked my student where they got all that self-confidence from and found out it was from Jiu-Jitsu. I thought to myself, “I’m going to do that too.” That was when I met Master Osvaldo Alves and started to train. I was 26, so it was 25 years ago.

“Jiu-Jitsu requires discipline and dedication, as it is a difficult sport with elaborate positions. The early years – anyone who practices knows – the art involves the person completely, leaves them even thinking about positions while riding the bus. That dedication, discipline and attention to technique was transported to study. These days, I can study with discipline for six hours a day, non-stop. Thanks to Jiu-Jitsu.

“So much so that when I took the test become a judge I was at the peak of my dedication, in 1982, having been training for a year and a half. It coincided with the time Sérgio Penha was going to compete with Rickson, and I accompanied his preparations. In the wee hours we’d run up Santa Leocádia hill, run on the sands carrying a teammate on our backs, doing physical conditioning work like no other, led by Osvaldo.

“So I’d work out, do Jiu-Jitsu, study and I didn’t feel tired because I was physically in great shape. All that with God’s help, of course, and because I am of great faith, I got first place in the test and became a judge, even though I was very young.

“Besides the discipline in studying and helping with my physical prowess, Jiu-Jitsu also helped me fight for positions in my career, due to the fact that I’d learned its principles, its ideology. When I fought to become a minister, there was no lack of people trying to set me back in my efforts, saying I was very young, that I had no place trying for such a position. But that courage, that brazenness, that determination and self-confidence that I’d learned in training always carried me forth.

“I’d always been very persistent, and I was really young when I decided I had to study to fulfill my objectives, but Jiu-Jitsu intensified these qualities and was fundamental in my professional accomplishments.

“The idea of courage, daring within the bounds of responsibility and respect to others that Jiu-Jitsu conveys helped me a lot throughout my career as a judge because as a magistrate you need to be independent and have the vigor to face hardships. You are resolving the problems of others, but at the same time you often come up against an existential war, because there are people trying to decide other peoples’ destinies, and you need to have to have the independence and attitude to deal with that. On the other hand, you should also impose your posture, be forthright, be humble at the right moment but also brazen at the right moment, because you may suffer pressure from all levels.

“I feel it is key that people feel this release, this willingness to not fear, because the worst feeling is the fear of fear. Yes, you should feel fear, recognize dangers – it’s a question of responsibility. But you can’t fear the unknown. And Jiu-Jitsu, beforehand, prevents that sensation, by way of self-confidence. The art teaches that, if you happen to be in a situation where you are pushed to your limits, in the worst case you will know how to defend yourself.
The post Brazil’s black belt chief justice first appeared on Graciemag.

Autoconfiança, a balança e o relógio

“Então, eu malhava, fazia Jiu-Jitsu, estudava e não me sentia cansado, porque estava bem fisicamente.

The post O choro do ministro faixa-preta first appeared on Graciemag.

Anderson Silva’s next opponent in the UFC will be Chael Sonnen. At stake, once again, will be the promotion’s middleweight belt. Someone who has faced Sonnen on two occasions is Paulo Filho, who is scheduled to fight Hector Lombard at Bellator this coming 13th. Paulo had a chat with GRACIEMAG.com and gave some pointers for the “Spider”, as well as explaining why not to put the gi aside when training for MMA.

Check it out:

You’ve faced Sonnen on two occasions. What do you suggest Anderson do?

I recommend he train lots of knees and, should he end up on bottom, to watch out for the elbows. Sonnen throws himself into the guard. He won’t want to stand and, when he shoots for the leg, it’s a solid shoot. I believe that, if he doesn’t eat a knee when he shoots, he’ll manage to get the takedown at some point. So I feel it’s all about training knees and keeping the right distance. If he gets taken down, a good one to do is to throw an elbow when Sonnen jumps in. He can stay there pretty much just defending, and it’ll be all him. That’s one of the paths. What he can’t do is piddle around because the guy’s really good with his takedowns and brings on the punishment.

Sonnen can beat anyone” Paulão

But do you feel Sonnen really has what it takes to beat Anderson?

It’s a tough fight. I’ll root for Anderson till death, if just because Sonnen wasn’t very respectful to me. I was a gentleman to him. I accepted a rematch without needing to. He yelled during the first fight and, if the ref hadn’t stopped it, I’d have broken his arm. After that I lost the rematch and gave him the belt, even though it didn’t count for the title. Even so, he took 25% of my purse because I didn’t make weight. But I lost because of my own failings, and knew that belt wasn’t mine anymore. I gave it to him and he’s still talking smack to this day. So I’m for Anderson all the way. I always root for Brazilians, even if we have our differences. But Sonnen is really tough and dangerous. He can beat anybody.

How is your training for Lombard at Bellator going?

I was weighing 102 kg and now I’m at 93. I’ve mixed up my training a good deal. Distak has been training me most days and three times a week I do Jiu-Jitsu in the gi and physical conditioning, a workout specifically for the fight and my style of fighting. I do a lot of isometrics, lower back work and neck work, muscle groups I use a lot. Julio Muniz has helped me a great deal with that and I do Jiu-Jitsu with Osvaldo Alvez and at Carlson Gracie Academy. Now Distak works with me out in Recreio, after I’ve trained with all those other guys, and he just about kills me. I’m even a bit weak now from the diet, but that’s how it goes. Come fight time I’ll be fine. That’s what I’ve been doing, mixing it up.

Paulão with Osvaldo Alves. Photo: Carlos Ozório

You never stop training Jiu-Jitsu in the gi, even with a fight coming up, unlike most MMA fighters. Why is that?

For example, let’s talk about the days when there was a rivalry between Jiu-Jitsu and luta livre. Why did the Jiu-Jitsu guys always have an advantage? The gi lets you use your reason a lot more. Without it there is less variety in the moves and you slip a lot. The gi slows you down and we end up getting overloaded. It’s like the sprinter who trains with a 20 kg weight on him and when he takes it off he soars. With the gi we have millions of positions and variations, so we have to use our heads more. There are several angles for performing an armbar, several chokes, sweeps, passes… That gives you more options and, when in the scramble, it puts a few steps ahead of guys who only train grappling. That’s my theory.
The post Paulão: tips for Anderson and the importance of the gi first appeared on Graciemag.

The post Paulão já se prepara para Lombard first appeared on Graciemag.

Paulo Filho faces Hector Lombard at the May 13 Bellator event. The fight, previously reported by GRACIEMAG.com, was officially confirmed by the American organization and Paulão speaks of what he expects in the bout not worth the belt, despite Lombard being the current champion.

“Lombard is a really great athlete, top of the line, who trains at American Top Team, a great team. He’s a really strong guy who is good at takedowns, has a tight game and, if I’m not mistaken, is riding a 17-fight unbeaten streak. I’m happy to have this fight, with my head in the right place,” he says.

In preparing, the fighter relies on the guidance of his coaches Josuel Distak and Osvaldo Alves.

“I’m working out with Distak, who has been with me for a long time, and with Osvaldo. Osvaldo always has those positions that can make things easier and be a shortcut to the win. I’ll be in good shape for this fight,” he says in finishing.
The post Paulão prepares for Lombard first appeared on Graciemag.

It was July of 1997, when Amaury became the first ever two-time world champion – an accomplishment no one has so far surpassed.

That was the day the joy overflowing from Master Osvaldo Alves caused him to take a misstep in celebration – a move that was memorable in the history of the Jiu-Jitsu Worlds, too.

Check out the scene, at one minute on the dot, in this video in tribute to Amaury.
