San Diego, California – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Thiago Gaia showcased his prowess over the weekend at the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) event. Gaia emerged victorious in both the gi and no-gi divisions, solidifying his status among the elite in his weight and age category.

Gaia’s remarkable performance earned him two championship belts, as he triumphed in five matches in the absolute gi division and two matches in his respective no-gi category. The Brazilian competitor stood out as the standout athlete of the tournament, which attracts over 700,000 participants worldwide.

The North American Grappling Association (NAGA) is a prestigious mixed grappling tournament, renowned for its fierce competition and high level of skill. Gaia’s exceptional abilities were on full display as he showcased his superior takedowns and submissions.

The accomplished fighter expressed his immense joy, particularly due to the presence of his three daughters cheering him on with chants of “Go, Daddy!” Their unwavering support served as great motivation for Gaia, propelling him to overcome the challenges within the combat arena.

Você está entre as lideranças da Atos BJJ, com uma atuação de destaque que vai muito além do sul do Brasil, certo? Fale um pouco sobre o seu papel na equipe, suas principais funções, a amplitude do seu trabalho e as projeções para o seu futuro no time.

RAFAEL DORADO: Hoje sou um dos professores e líderes da Equipe Atos Guetho Porto Alegre, sou responsável pelo time de Masters na equipe, busco entender cada aluno com sua busca pessoal, assim, percebo quem está pronto para avançar. Liderar um time de Masters não é fácil, tem muitas adversidades, tanto na idade quanto no tempo para treinar… Cuido principalmente dessa parte, em que aquela pessoa que se acha um pouco mais velha acha que não pode treinar por conta da idade. Meu trabalho é fazer com que o aluno acredite em seu potencial máximo. Outra área específica onde trabalho é o “Return to Play”, na qual o aluno sofreu alguma lesão e não consegue retornar para o treino com a galera por ordens médicas. É um trabalho específico, que envolve dedicação e paciência, tanto do aluno quanto do professor. Eu cuido para que ele volte à sua rotina de treinos. Além dos Masters também tenho muito foco na criação de futuros campeões através do Projeto Social Jaca Team do professor Alexandre Jaca e o Projeto Social Gaditas do professor Eduardo Oliveira, todos vinculados ao nosso time Atos JiuJitsu já há mais de 10 anos construindo futuros campeões e ajudando crianças carentes a alcançar inúmeros títulos no Jiu-Jitsu. O meu papel nesse time todo é manter uma harmonia entre as equipes para que consigamos conquistar medalhas e principalmente ajudar as crianças a alcançarem seus sonhos através do Jiu-Jitsu. Já conseguimos mudar vidas de muitas crianças para lutar fora do Brasil e algumas até morar fora. É acima de tudo a manutenção das conquistas deste time vitorioso; conquistar é uma coisa, mas manter é onde está o maior desafio.

Você também tem uma carreira vitoriosa como competidor. Quais foram as suas principais conquistas e o que você aprendeu com elas?

Toda conquista envolve renúncias, mas a que mais me marcou na carreira foi quando tive a oportunidade de lutar fora do Brasil, assim que ganhei a faixa-preta do mestre Guto. Tive a oportunidade de ir para o Texas dar aulas e lá fiz lutas muito marcantes, no campeonato de grappling NAGA. Teve dois anos seguidos no Texas (2011,2012) que ganhei o cinturão do campeonato Mundial dessa federação, foi sensacional.

Você também já formou ótimos competidores…

Sim, vários campeões, desde o Pablo Mantovani (ADCC Veteran, Campeão Grand Slam Moscou), até o Lucas Foguinho (Campeão Europeu Peso e absoluto IBJJF, Campeão Brasileiro, Campeão PanAmericano). Em termos de competição a minha cria mais famosa é a Andressa Oliveira (Vice-campeã Mundial 2023 IBJJF, campeã Mundial Abu Dhabi Worlds 2022 AJP, 4x Campeã Brasileira CBJJ).

As categorias de base kids dos nossos Projetos Sociais também são muito fortes. Jaca Team Felipe Faller (Campeão Mundial, Campeão Brasileiro), por exemplo. Do projeto Gaditas temos o Santiago (Campeão Mundial e 3x Campeão brasileiro) e o Krigor Monteiro (Campeão World Pro, Campeão Mundial, 4x Campeão Brasileiro), todos são talentos na arte. E o segredo principalmente para ter essas conquistas é acreditar no seu aluno, acreditar no potencial que ele trás para você tem que ter uma conexão professor e aluno inabalável. Essa é a chave.

Sua constante atuação como árbitro nos torneios contribui na sua atuação como atleta e professor?

Acho que arbitrar os campeonatos me ajuda a me manter sempre atualizado com as regras e me ajuda muito para as minhas competições, pois é muito importante o competidor entender as regras da luta. Pode ser o detalhe que garante a vitória. E a atuação como árbitro acaba dando mais confiança na hora de ensinar as regras com mais propriedade para que eu possa ensinar aos alunos de maneira teórica e prática.

Quem é o seu grande ídolo na carreira?

Meu grande ídolo é meu Mestre Guto Campos, que hoje reside na Flórida. Além de professor, um mentor, um amigo e multicampeão, com quem sempre pude contar nos momentos bons ou ruins da minha vida. Me ensinou a treinar Jiu-Jitsu de uma maneira inteligente e com muita malandragem também, me ensinou a ser um professor. E nessa trajetória de aprendizado tive a oportunidade de morar com o Guto por uma temporada aprendi muito principalmente sobre treino e dar aulas. Eu geralmente ficava com os iniciantes e o pessoal do Jiu-Jitsu executivo ou seja aquela pessoal que procura o Jiu-Jitsu com uma atividade física ou um estilo de vida. E através do Jiu-Jitsu eu consegui ajudar os nossos alunos a evoluírem não só no tatame mas como vida também, muitos chegam na academia acima do peso, baixa autoestima, sem autoconfiança, sem auto controle… E através do Jiu-Jitsu consegui ajudar os nossos alunos a evoluírem em vários aspectos que são tão importantes para as competições, como também na vida pessoal. São 22 anos ao lado dessa lenda, então com certeza o troféu de ídolo vai pro meu Sensei Guto Campos.

Qual é a frase motivacional que você gosta de repetir para você mesmo quando está passando por uma situação difícil na carreira?

Se o que estou vivendo é passageiro, então eu suporto. “Hustlin” é o motor que deve estar funcionando dentro de você todos os dias. Por mais difícil que as adversidades sejam, continue trabalhando duro, não pare nunca. E seu combustível é a paixão. Se você conseguir manter esse motor funcionando, ele o levará a todos os lugares que você deseja na vida.

E quais as dicas que você costuma dar a quem tem o sonho de se tornar um professor relevante?

Minha atitude em relação à minha carreira é “assobie enquanto trabalha”. Cada dia de horas no tatame é divertido para mim. Todo dia toda noite é uma alegria. Cada despertar às 5h30 é uma bênção, o sinal de que estou tendo outra chance de fazer algo que amo. Tenho um conhecimento profundo no Jiu-Jitsu, sou responsável por mostrar técnicas e estratégias, valores associados a essa disciplina aprimoramento de habilidades e crescimento pessoal dentro e fora do tatame. A filosofia básica da nossa escola inclui princípios como respeito, disciplina, humildade, caráter e valor. E a dica pra quem quer ser um professor é essa: treine muito e participe de algumas competições, pense Jiu-Jitsu o dia todo, fique perto dos leões para aprender com eles. Porque se você não fizer isso, não está vivendo o Jiu-Jitsu dentro de você. Se você quiser ser professor, viva o Jiu-Jitsu life style.

He moved up in weight class and finished his opponent in the final.

While he’s waiting for his next engagement under One Championship to be scheduled, Herbert Burns continues to collect bling in no-gi grappling. Following his Miami Open victory last month, last Saturday he went to Jacksonville, Florida to win another title.

Burns won the North American Grappling Association’s 77kg belt as he ended the final via calf slicer. “I was enrolled in the 70kg division, but there were no opponents, so I moved up,” he said afterwards. “I finished my fight quickly, in under a minute, to take the belt.”

On May 2, thirty one members from three Seamless Progression Academy (Carlson Gracie Team) converged on Villa Park, IL to test their skills against 800+ of the Midwest’s best grapplers at the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) Chicago Championships.

NAGA is an organization started in 1995 that holds Submission Grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments throughout North America and Europe.

Although Seamless Progression is a new academy, only in it’s second year, their members did very well.

After many hard practice sessions 29 of the 31 Seamless Progression Academy grapplers placed in the top three positions receiving at total of 42 awards (19 Gold Medals – 14 Silver Medals – 9 Bronze Medals).

Seamless Progression Academy is run by Prof. Benjamin Salas who has been a student of Master Carlson Gracie Jr. for nearly 20 years.

Benjamin, who for years specialized in Jiu-Jitsu’s law enforcement applications, enjoys coaching his students and teaching at his new academy most of all.

His student’s competition points contributed to the Carlson Gracie Team total at this years NAGA Chicago helping the Carlson Gracie Team sweep all of the team titles.

The Jiu-Jitsu brown belt Gabriel Checco from GMA Gracie Humaita Henderson in Nevada has accumulated three consecutive wins at grappling competitions this year.

Avid competitor, Checco dominated at the West Coast Naga last Saturday, August 23, taking the gold in both Gi and No Gi modalities. In addition, he also succeeded in competitions earlier this year winning the famous Grapples Guest and the IBJJF Las Vegas Open.

Gabriel who trains with Mica Cipili, a black belt 4th degree under Rickson and Royler Gracie says that constant Jiu-Jitsu practice helped him stay in shape for competitions. The athlete who rolls twice a day with his students at Gracie Humaita Henderson devotes his victory streak to his master and family.

“First I would like to thank my mentor, friend, brother and business partner Mica, for the opportunity he offered me that changed my life. He invited me to open a Jiu-Jitsu school a year and a half ago, so nowadays I train Jiu-Jitsu at least twice a day, and even with my white belts. I keep learning every day, and of course, if it were not for the support of my wife I do not know how would it be or where I would be today.”  said the champ

On May 24, the competitors of GMA Cavalcanti Jiu-Jitsu Luxembourg – Team Miketo Resch participated in the 2014 edition of the NAGA Germany Championship. By the end of the day, the team had earned three medals to bring back home.

In the teen division, Kai Possenti earned the bronze medal in the white belt gi lightweight category and Nick Kunnert received gold in the white belt gi heavyweight category. Both athletes are fifteen years old.

Most mentionable is Ken Possenti who fought in the adult white belt welterweight category. He started in the 22-men strong category being the lightest competitor amongst them and finished second, bringing the silver medal home!

On Mar. 4 the City of Esch-sur-Alzette, the hometown of GMA Cavalcanti Jiu Jitsu Luxembourg, organized the annual “Merit of Sports” Award Ceremony.

Cavalcanti Jiu Jitsu Luxembourg competitors Raphael Geib and Jing Zhu had the “Merit of Sports Award” handed out by the Mayor, in presence of some members of the city council. In the crowded City Theater of Esch-sur-Alzette, the competitors received the award for their great results at the 2013 NAGA Europe Championship.

Jing Zhu earned bronze in both gi and no-gi. Raphael Geib earned silver in gi.

GMA Cavalcanti Jiu-Jisu Luxembourg hosted Master Ricardo Cavalcanti during their annual training camp in November. The yearly tradition is scheduled around the same time as the NAGA Europe Championship in Paris.

Head instructor Mike “Miketo” Resch, as leader of Team Cavalcanti in Europe, arranged four seminars for Cavalcanti: two in Paris, one in Luxembourg, one in Germany. The two in Paris, Cercle Tissier and Team Shinko BJJ, are two of the oldest and most renowned martial arts academy in the area. Resch says, “I wanted to offer Master Ricardo Cavalcanti the possibility to spread his knowledge as much as possible.”

As for the competition, the Luxembourg team brought seven competitors and two of them returned with medals around their necks. The results are as follows:

Jing Zhu earned a bronze medal in the white belt gi heavyweight division and a bronze medal in the no-gi beginner heavyweight division.
Raphael Geib in his first Jiu-Jitsu tournament earned a silver medal in the white belt heavyweight master division.

To complete Master Cavalcanti’s visit, he led a belt ceremony with belt testing and rank evaluations. Students were promoted as follows:

Purple belt: Mike Resch
Blue belt: Jing Zhu, Joe Possenti
Stripe promotions: David Strotz blue belt three stripes, Ken Possenti white belt four stripes, Alex Carvalho Balsa and Björn Backes white belt three stripes, Stefan Klein, Alex Nielk and Henrik Steffen white belt one stripe

Fit mom Petya Bastos won first place at NAGA World Championships last month. She competed at a grappling tournament for the first time only three months after the birth of her son. Even though Petya is a blue belt, she had to fight a black belt competitor because there were not enough female blue belts in her division.

Preparing to fight at NAGA, Petya tried to study BJJ as much as she could prior to the tournament. She thought it was important to attend a BJJ seminar and have the proper skilled training partners to help her.

She started her last week of training attending a three-hour super seminar with Bruno & Ricardo Bastos, Gustavo Dantas and Vitor Shaolin at GMA Alvarez BJJ in Arlington, TX (Bruno Bastos’s affiliated BJJ school).

In the last days before the competition, Petya had Sarah Black as one of her best training partners. Sarah is a purple belt from Tempe, Arizona under Gustavo Dantas whom won the 2013 World Championships at the adults and masters divisions.

For Jiu-Jitsu techniques Petya practiced grip fighting fighting the most, drilling with a lot of speed, opening and passing the guard, and half guard. Completing her training one day before the tournament, Petya rested. “I do not like to do anything the day before the tournament. I prefer my body and mind to rest,” she says.

Saturday at the competition, Petya had one fight where she was able to use the skills she had been working on. She won the NAGA World title with a judo throw in the middle of the fight, and then controlled the match on the ground until the end.

After enduring this tournament experience and conquering her victory at NAGA, Petya wants to leave a message to all women and young mothers out there. “I want to say to all young mothers like me to pursue their goals, not to give up when they are most difficult because after that comes the success.”

Petya says that her husband’s support was essential so she could achieve her goal. “I want to thank mostly my Husband, Friend, Coach and Professor Bruno Bastos. He believes in me and dreams with me. He gives me the opportunity to train with some of the best in the world.”

Petya doesn’t want to stop competing now. Her next challenge will be the IBJJF Houston Open in February.

Depois de despachar Brian Stan, no UFC Japão, e mostrar que continua com o queixo e os punhos em dia, o Cachorro Louco vibra com os primeiros passos do filho Thor Silva no Jiu-Jitsu.

Com a faixa-branca na cintura, Thor ouviu os conselhos do paizão cascudo e faturou o título do Naga, após bater seu adversário nos pontos. Não foi a primeira vez que o filhote de Wand papou a medalha de ouro. No fim do ano passado, o faixa-branca de sangue azul já havia feito barulho numa competição de wrestling, onde também ficou com o ouro.
