Depois de viajarem por todo o mundo, os irmãos Guilherme e Rafael Mendes realizam, pela primeira vez, um seminário em seu país.

“Vai ser no interior de São Paulo, no dia 10 de novembro, na Atos São Carlos. O seminário é aberto ao público, para atletas de qualquer academia, e esperamos que todos compareçam. Vai ser uma grande oportunidade para o pessoal no Brasil conhecer sobre nosso jogo, nossas posições e a nossa didática. As atividades acontecem na academia Aquário, na Rua Antonio Blanco 169. “Vai ser um grande prazer realizar este seminário, depois de quase 50 fora do país. Following their trip around the world, brothers Guilherme and Rafael Mendes will hold a seminar in their home country for the first time.

“It will take place November 10 at Atos São Carlos academy, in São Paulo state. The seminar is open to the public, to athletes from any academy, and we hope everyone shows up. It will be a great opportunity for the folks in Brazil to get to know our game, our positions and teaching methods. The address is Aquário Academy, at 169 Rua Antonio Blanco. “It will be a great pleasure to hold this seminar, after nearly fifty days abroad. It’s our first one in Brazil and we’re taking several athletes from Atos headquarters, like Bruno Frazatto, for example, which will be really cool. We’d like to thank Tattinho Jader and Bruno, who are organizing everything and are excellent people who train with us,” he adds.

Further news is that the Mendes brothers are about to launch their website, www.mendesbros.com, where fans can find out everything there is to know about the black belt brothers. The fighters also wish the members of their team about to compete this weekend the best.

Faixa-preta da Soul Fighters, Rafael Formiga subiu de categoria e foi o campeão do Miami Open 2010 no peso médio.

“Estou nos EUA há quatro meses e aqui fica mais difícil de manter a dieta. Estou me acostumando nesse peso e lutei bem. Fiz duas lutas no peso. Na primeira, raspei e finalizei com um armlock. Na segunda, enfrentei o Palito, aluno do Rodrigo Cavaca, e foi o maior lutão. Venci por 8 a 2, o moleque tem as pernas grandes e tentava um triângulo que me incomodou. Também fui no absoluto, e estava até bem contra o Marcus Bochecha. Vencia por uma raspagem e quase peguei as costas. Mas ele me surpreendeu com uma leglock”, comenta.

Depois de competir, Formiga começa organizar os treinamentos para manter o ritmo. Além dos rolas com CP, da Nova União, o lutador deve se encontrar com JT, da Lloyd Irvin.

“É ótimo viver do Jiu-Jitsu, mas perco um pouco dos treinos que tinha no Brasil. Tenho treinado bastante com o Danilo Cherman “CP”, da Nova União, que mora bem perto de mim. Quem também tem me chamado para treinar é o Jonathan Torres, outro que mora perto de mim. Devemos nos encontrar para treinar duas vezes por semana”, diz a fera, que está em Connecticut, dando aulas na Best Way BJJ.

“Esse ano devo lutar mais alguns campeonatos regionais e vou fazer a seletiva do ADCC em Nova York. Com todos os documentos em dia, vou lutar tudo no próximo ano. Também deve vir uma galera para ficar aqui comigo antes do Mundial”, finaliza.

Soul Fighters black belt Rafael Formiga moved up in weight and won the middleweight division at the 2010 Miami Open.

“I’ve been in the USA for four months now and it’s harder to stick to a diet here. I’m getting used to the weight and fought well. I had two matches at weight. In the first, I swept and got an armbar submission. In the second, I faced Palito, a Rodrigo Cavaca student, and it was a major fight. I won by 8 to 2. The kid has long legs and tried a triangle that caused me some problems. I also entered the absolute, and I was even doing well against Marcus Bochecha. I was winning by a sweep and nearly got back mount. But he caught me by surprise with a kneebar,” he comments.

After the competition, Formiga set about organizing his training to keep up the pace. Besides training with Nova União’s Danilo “CP” Sherman, the fighter should also meet up with Lloyd Irvin’s JT.

“It’s great to make a living through Jiu-Jitsu, but I’m missing out on the kind of training we’d do in Brazil. I’ve been training a lot with Danilo “CP” Sherman, of Nova União, who lives really close to me. Another who called on me to train is Jonathan Torres, who also lives near me. We should be getting together to train twice a week,” says the black belt now living in Connecticut and teaching at Best Way BJJ.

“This year I should compete at a few more regional championships and I’ll do the ADCC qualifiers in New York. Since all my papers are in order, I’ll be competing in everything next year. There should also be a group coming to stay with me here before the Worlds,” he says in finishing.

Ever since moving to the U.S., Marcus “Bochecha” Almeida has been running roughshod through the competitions he enters. The last one was the Miami Open, where the black belt weight group and shared top honors with friend and training partner Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu. Now his sights are set on the No-Gi Worlds, to go down November 7 in California.

“I’m going full steam in training for weight and absolute at the Worlds. Everyone is training hard. We put together a camp here in Jupiter, Florida, where Cavaca is heading our training. There are a number of top athletes with us, like Thiago Baiano, Gabriel Rollo, Roger Clavijo, Raphael Chaves (Cabeçudinho), as well as Pablo Popovitch and Cyborg’s guys, like Vagner Rocha, João and Fred Moncaico, Jimie Brasco… Those are just a few of the names of the guys training with us. We’re all going for the title, and everyone will surely get it.

Bochecha, besides closing out the absolute with Cyborg at the Miami Open, recently closed out the No-Gi Pan with Pablo Popovitch. The fighter explains the partnership:

“I’m from CheckMat/Armory, but we’re always training with Pablo and Cyborg her in Florida, everyone helping each other, and it would be awful if we were to face each other. These days, we’re all training partners, but in competition each represents his respective team,” he state.

Bochecha comments on the last event, the Miami Open:

“There were no matches for me in the superheavyweight division. In the absolute, I did my first match against a featherweight and finished from back mount. The second match was against Rafael Formiga. I was losing 2 to 0 (sweep) when I managed to sink a kneebar from half-guard and ended up getting the sub. In the final, Cyborg and I opted not to fight because of what I just explained,” he says in closing.

Desde que se mudou para os EUA, Marcus Almeida, o Bochecha, vem fazendo bonito nas competições. A última foi o Miami Open, em que o faixa-preta venceu na categoria de peso e dividiu o pódio do absoluto com o amigo e companheiro de treinos Roberto Abreu, o Cyborg. Agora o foco é o Mundial Sem kimono, que acontece no dia 7 de novembro, na Califórnia.

“A preparação para o Mundial está a mil por hora e vou de peso e absoluto. Todos estamos treinado forte, estamos com um camp aqui em Jupiter, na Flórida, onde o Cavaca puxa os nossos treinos. Estão com a gente muitos atletas de ponta como Thiago Baiano, Gabriel Rollo, Roger Clavijo, Raphael Chaves (Cabeçudinho), além da galera do Pablo Popovitch e do Cyborg, como o Vagner Rocha, João e Fred Moncaico, Marcel, Jimie Brasco… São apenas alguns nomes entre muitos outros que treinam aqui com a gente. Estamos todos em busca desse titulo, que, com certeza, chegará para todos!”.

Bochecha, além de fechar o absoluto do Miami Open com Cyborg, recentemente fechou o do Pan Sem kimono com Pablo Popovitch. O lutador explica a parceria.  

“Sou CheckMat/Armory, mas estamos sempre treinando com o Pablo e o Cyborg aqui na Flórida, um ajudando o outro, e seria muito ruim lutarmos. Hoje somos todos parceiros de treino, mas nas competições cada um continuará representando a sua equipe”, declara.

Sobre o último evento, o Miami Open, Bochecha comenta:

“Na categoria superpesado não tive luta. No absoluto, fiz a primeira contra um peso pena e finalizei nas costas. A segunda luta fiz com o Rafael Formiga, estava perdendo por 2 a 0 (raspagem) quando consegui encaixar uma leglock da meia-guarda e acabei finalizando. Na final eu e o Cyborg optamos por não lutar por causo do que acabei de explicar”, encerra.

O campeão absoluto do Miami Open, no último sábado, finalizou Stephen Hall duas vezes, uma delas usando o joelho na barriga, e passando o “pesinho” para o pescoço do oponente.

O professor do time The Avengers comentou o golpe com o GRACIEMAG.com hoje.

“Há muito tempo faço essa técnica, já fiz em vários campeonatos e com certeza o golpe é uma das minhas marcas registradas”, diz Cyborg. “Só posso dizer que tem muita pressão!”

Is there such thing as an ugly submission? To black belt Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu, there isn’t.

The winner of the absolute division at last Saturday’s Miami Open submitted Stephen Hall twice, once with a knee on belly, and the other by sticking his “little foot” into his opponent’s neck.

The teacher at The Avengers commented on the move to GRACIEMAG.com today.

“I’ve been doing that one for a long time; I’ve done it in a number of tournaments and it’s surely one of my trademarks,” says Cyborg. “All I can say is there’s a lot of pressure behind it!”

Entre faixas-pretas como Pablo Popovitch, Rodrigo Cavaca, Renato Tavares, Roberto Cyborg e muitos outros, Daniel de Lima, o Montanha, foi um dos homenageados pela IBJJF no Miami Open 2010. Melhor ainda, o professor da Gracie Barra Miami venceu o absoluto master no evento, categoria que fechou com Rodrigo Clark, numa dobradinha de associados GRACIEMAG (GMA). 

“Fiz um bom combate contra o Jared Weiner, atleta do Lloyd Irvin. Consegui quedar e passei a guarda duas vezes para finalizar com a chave kimura. Ele tinha uma guarda muito agressiva, mas, com paciência, fui passando pouco a pouco, como o mestre Carlos Gracie Jr. ensina! Na final encontrei meu companheiro de equipe Rodrigo Clark, da Gracie Barra Santa Barbara, e fechamos a categoria”, comenta.

Um dos homenageados do evento, em reconhecimento ao trabalho feito em prol do Jiu-Jitsu, a festa foi completa para Montanha. 

“É uma honra enorme ter o reconhecimento do nosso trabalho pela Federação Internacional e perante todos que estavam presentes no ginásio. Acredito que com atitudes desse tipo o nosso esporte cresce mais forte ainda. Tenho lutado por seis anos aqui em Miami para ensinar o Jiu-Jitsu que aprendi e este tipo de gesto por parte da Federação incentiva os professores a continuar com mais garra na divulgação da arte suave pela Flórida.” 

Além disso, o professor ficou contente com o resultado de um dos pupilos em Miami.

“O Manny Torres, meu faixa-marrom, venceu no senior o peso e ficou em segundo no absoluto. Ele tem 48 anos e desceu para o senior 1, porque o senior 3 não tinha nenhuma luta para ele. Ele ficou muito feliz por ter conquistado algo tão importante dentro do nosso esporte, depois de cinco anos de treino e muita dedicação!”, encerra.

Along with black belts the likes of Pablo Popovitch, Rodrigo Cavaca, Renato Tavares, Roberto Cyborg, and others, Daniel “Montanha” de Lima was one of those paid tribute by the IBJJF at the 2010 Miami Open. Better still, the Gracie Barra Miami teacher won the absolute class of the master division, closing out with Rodrigo Clark, a double win for the GRACIEMA Association (GMA).

“I had a good match with Jared Weiner, a Lloyd Irvin athlete. I managed to get the takedown and pass guard twice, before finishing with a kimura lock. He had a really aggressive guard, but with patience, little by little I made it past, just like Master Carlos Gracie Jr. teaches! I then closed out the final with Rodrigo Clark, of Gracie Barra Santa Barbara,” he explains.

One of those honored at the event, in recognition of his work benefitting Jiu-Jitsu, to Montanha the party was complete.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized for by the International Federation and everyone at the gymnasium for the work we do. I feel that such attitudes will only make our sport even stronger. I’ve been here in Miami working hard teaching the Jiu-Jitsu I learned and this type of gesture by the Federation provides incentive for teachers to further there efforts in spreading the gentle art in Florida.”

Furthermore, the teacher was overjoyed with a student of his’ results in Miami.

“Manny Rorres, my brown belt, won his weight group and took runner-up in the absolute in the senior division. He’s 48 and dropped to senior 1 because there were no opponents for him in the senior 3 category. He was really happy about conquering something so important in our sport, after five years of training and lots of dedication!” he says in closing.

O que achou da participação no Miami Open?

O Miami Open foi muito bom e organizado como sempre. Graças a Deus, estou muito feliz com o trabalho que a equipe vem fazendo. Eu e o Pablo Popovitch montamos o The Avengers BJJ e só está rendendo bons frutos. Tivemos mais de 50 alunos inscritos, ficamos em 2º lugar entre as academias, a apenas dois pontos da Gracie Elite, e ganhamos quase todos os absolutos. Assim como fechamos todos os absolutos nos últimos eventos da IBJJF (Pan Sem kimono e Honolulu Open), repetimos agora.

Mas como foi a sua participação?

Tive duas lutas no peso e duas no absoluto. Fui campeão no peso tendo finalizado o Stephen Hall na final. No absoluto acabei fechando com meu parceiro de treino Marcus Almeida “Bochecha”, moleque muito bom, aluno do Rodrigo Cavaca que está tirando onda, fechando todos os absolutos com agente.

Como estão os preparativos para o Mundial Sem Kimono?

Os treinos para o Mundial não podiam estar melhores. Essa é a próxima missão dos The Avengers, conquistar o mundo tanto no peso quanto no absoluto! Vamos entrar com uma galera muito boa no evento, eu, Pablão (Popovitch), Jeff Monson, Cavaca, Bochecha, Wagner Rocha, Jake Mackenzie, Thiago Abreu, James Brasco, João Macaio, Marcel Goulart, Rafael Chaves, Guedes… O treino está alucinante, todos estão muito bem treinados e ansiosos para por os pés nas áreas de luta de Long Beach.

Vai buscar peso e absoluto novamente?

Como sempre vou nas duas categorias. Amo lutar no absoluto e este ano, com certeza, temos força pra dominar na Califa!

Alguma novidade pensando na próxima temporada?

Fui muito feliz neste ano com o Jiu-JItsu, com várias grandes conquistas. Mas já sabia que era só um preparatório para o ano que vem. Vou lutar tudo que vier pela frente. Pretendo lutar os dois Mundiais (com e sem kimono), assim como o ADCC e o World Pro pela primeira vez. Que venha 2011!

What’s your assessment of the Miami Open?

The Miami Open was great and well-organized as always. Thank God, I’m really happy with the work the team’s been doing. Pablo Popovitch and I set up Avengers BJJ and now we’re just reaping the rewards. We had more then fifty students signed up and took second in the overall team dispute – just two points behind Gracie Elite –, plus we won nearly all the absolutes. Just as we closed out all the absolutes at the last IBJJF events (No-Gi Pan and Honolulu Open), we’ll do the same again now.

How about your performance?

I had two matches at weight and two in the absolute. I won my weight group beating Stephen Hall in the final. I ended up closing out the absolute with my training partner Marcus “Bochecha” Almeida, an awesome kid, a Rodrigo Cavaca student who’s on a roll, clocking out absolutes with us.

How’s your preparation for the No-Gi Worlds going?

Training for the Worlds couldn’t be going better. That’s The Avengers’ next mission, to conquer the world both at weight and open weight! A good group is going into the event: me, Pablo (Popovitch), Jeff Monson, Cavaca, Bochecha, Wagner Rocha, Jake Mackenzie, Thiago Abreu, James Brasco, João Macaio, Marcel Goulart, Rafael Chaves, Guedes… Training is out of the world, everyone in top shape and anxious step step onto the match areas in Long Beach.

Will you compete at both weight and open weight again?

As always, I’1l be in both division. I love competing in the absolute, and this year, for sure we’ve got what it takes to dominate in California!

Any news for next season?

I’m really happy with how things have gone in Jiu-Jitsu this year, with the various big conquests. But I already knew it was just preparation for next year. I’ll compete in everything out there. I intend to compete at both Worlds’ (gi and no-gi), as well as the ADCC and World Pro for the first time. Bring on 2011!
