The post A força versus a técnica no Jiu-Jitsu, por Alexandre Café first appeared on Graciemag.

With less than a week to go before the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship’s debut, the organizers have once again joined hands with AJP, this time to gift fans with an entertaining Fight Week. As the ADXC1 gets ready to take over the Mubadala Arena next Friday, October 20th, Jiu-Jitsu aficionados will have plenty of chances to meet their favorite athletes throughout the week.

Starting on Tuesday, October 17th, the main fighters and coaches will take part in a Meet & Greet at the UAEJJ Fitness, where they’ll be available for photos, autographs, and maybe even a quick chat. After that, the athletes will warm up their bodies for the last time before the event, showing their best moves for the crowd at the open workout.

Moving on to Wednesday, October 18th, the main players of the ADXC1 will sit down for the press conference, where they’ll talk to journalists and fans about their preparations, what they expect from the tournament, and any other questions that come up. Reporters and Jiu-Jitsu connoisseurs will make their way to the Mubadala Arena, eager to hear what their favorite athletes have to say.

On October 19th, one day before the ADXC1 debut, the Mubadala Arena will be all geared up to pick up the pace ahead of the tournament, promoting many attractions at the ADXC Fan Zone. Later on, the stars of the show will face their very first challenge: beating the scales in the Ceremonial Weigh-Ins. Still on Thursday, the most dedicated Jiu-Jitsu athletes will have the chance to take part in a super seminar, led by Atos’ leader André Galvão, and Checkmat’s leader Léo Vieira.

All these attractions lead up to the main course on October 20th, at 8 p.m., as the ADXC1 completely takes over the Mubadala Arena and welcomes the stars of its debut. Don’t miss out on a moment of this build-up, which will make the Abu Dhabi Showdown Week 2023 even more entertaining.
NEIMAN GRACIE vs. BEN HENDERSON – THE MATCHUP

The duel was chosen by the organization to symbolize the strength of grappling and how Jiu-Jitsu transcends traditional competitive environments, leading the gentle art to dominate outside the mats as well. Neiman and Bendo will have the chance to show their technical and submission-focused style in a no-gi superfight, with a ruleset similar to the one used in MMA tournaments, where the points are counted individually in each of the five rounds of three minutes. The battle will be in the welterweight division and closes the event, which will also feature a co-main event and ten more super fights.

Neiman Gracie
Neiman Gracie carries with him the responsibility of representing the most famous family in international Jiu-Jitsu every time he fights. A Jiu-Jitsu black belt, son of master Marcio Stambowsky, Neiman is one of Renzo Gracie’s most dedicated pupils, having gotten a taste for fighting while living on the famous blue mats of his master’s academy, in New York.

An MMA athlete, Neiman is a Bellator fighter and has an impressive record of nine victories by submission, out of the 12 in his resumé, holding the record for most submissions in his weight division. In Jiu-Jitsu, he has appeared on the podium of the most prestigious events with and without the gi. Neiman arrives at ADXC to show not only the strength of the Gracie family in the Abu Dhabi cage but also to prove once again the efficiency of the Jiu-Jitsu that has been his legacy from birth.

Ben Henderson

Ben Henderson is a former UFC and WEC champion, with stints at Bellator and numerous main events throughout his successful MMA career. A wrestling specialist, he has been a Jiu-Jitsu black belt since 2013 and used a lot of his knowledge of the mats in MMA, taking eight of his 30 victories in the cage through submissions, all via the neck with his tight guillotines and rear-naked choke adjustments. After venturing into grappling duels, with and without the gi, Ben Henderson joins the impressive ADXC card to make his debut within the organization, using his Jiu-Jitsu and cage experience in Abu Dhabi.

To further heat up the debut night of the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship (ADXC), the organization included an old rivalry in its gi main event. In a fight in the middleweight division, Isaque Bahiense and Gustavo Batista are once again facing each other, but this time the AJP was able to turn up the rivalry between the champions even more.

The gi duel will take place in the ADCX cage, over five three-minute rounds. Even though the submission can define the winner at any moment of the fight, the score per round, defined by the side judges, will bring even more desire to show their abilities the best they can.

Furthermore, the absence of safety areas or room for escape makes the cage work another factor to be considered in the classic duel between Isaque and Gustavo. Isaque Bahiense, leader and athlete representing DreamArt, arrives to compete against Gustavo with two Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship titles in his career. Gustavo, an elite athlete from Atos Jiu-Jitsu, a team captained by André Galvão, has the notorious AJP King of Mats title on his resumé.

Dueling on the AJP mats, Isaque came out winning twice, in the final of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio in 2017, and at the Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2018. Gustavo, in turn, won the AJP King of Mats title in 2019 by overcoming Isaque in the final match of the event.

ADXC will have 13 fights on its card, with the gi main event between Isaque Bahiense and Gustavo Batista, in addition to the no-gi main event that closes the debut event, featuring MMA stars Neiman Gracie and Ben Henderson. Don’t miss the excitement and great fights scheduled for the event that will revolutionize the world of grappling.
Kaio Cesar is one of the top athletes in the master 1 division. Currently, he holds the second position in the featherweight division in the IBJJF rankings. Last weekend in Las Vegas, Kaio won a silver and a gold medal at the American Nationals, in the gi and no-gi divisions, respectively.

As a member of Gracie Barra, Kaio has been maintaining a hectic pace since the beginning of the season, but for the champion, he’s enjoying the journey towards achieving his goals which is the most important aspect.

Kaio also possesses a wealth of knowledge beyond the mat when it comes to the philosophy of the sport and the benefits it brings. Below, Kaio shares 10 pieces of advice to help you evolve in Jiu-Jitsu, both on and off the mat.

DISCIPLINE
“I consider discipline to be one of the key factors for every white belt practitioner. In fact, it applies to practitioners of all belt levels. Good discipline organizes the steps necessary for success in your journey.”

PATIENCE
“In Jiu-Jitsu, there are no shortcuts. Everyone must go through all the processes, including pain, suffering, and happiness. Techniques cannot be learned overnight; it takes a lot of practice to achieve perfection.”

CONSISTENCY
“You must remain consistent in your training, showing up regularly even on those days when your mind tells you to give up. The power of consistency enables you to reach your goals.”

NUTRITION
“Jiu-Jitsu demands a lot of energy, both physical and mental. Nutrition plays a vital role in keeping our bodies healthy and prepared for training sessions. Poor nutrition will hinder your performance and recovery. Strive to eat healthily to achieve excellent results and desired energy levels.”

DRILLS
“I believe that motor coordination and speed in techniques are acquired through extensive practice. Those who allocate extra time for repetitions will always stay ahead of those who only practice during training sessions.”

PHYSICAL PREPARATION
“Jiu-Jitsu has become increasingly professional, with high-performance athletes and even hobbyists being well-conditioned. The sport is becoming more competitive, and the better-prepared individuals will have an advantage. Physical preparation provides support to protect the joints and build strength. However, rest should not be overlooked, as it is also part of the preparation plan.”

STUDY POSITIONS
“Technology is very helpful nowadays. You can find numerous videos on the internet. Set aside time to study positions, whether on the mat or at home, and watch Jiu-Jitsu competitions. This will keep you connected to the sport and continually expand your knowledge.”

RESPECT
“This word holds great power. Showing respect to training partners, instructors, and people in your daily life will make you a better person both on and off the mat. No matter how skilled you are on the mat, without respect, you do not represent the true martial artist.”

FREE TRAINING
“I believe free training is crucial for practitioners of all belt levels, but I want to emphasize an important point for white belts. Be cautious when choosing training partners for free rolls. Select partners who will help you improve. Remember that you are a student and still getting to know the sport. Training should be intelligent, leaving ego outside the mat.”

GOALS
“Have a goal, whether it’s training three times a week, participating in a competition, or reaching the black belt. In life, just like in the journey of Jiu-Jitsu, it is essential to have goals. They will motivate you to work hard every day.”
The post Jiu-Jitsu champion Kaio Cesar teaches concepts to evolve in the sport first appeared on Graciemag.

A respected teacher and fierce competitor, with countless titles in Brazil and abroad, Roberto Godoi has already accumulated more than three decades of a firm commitment to Jiu-Jitsu. The road was long and full of challenges, but the professor, who always liked to test himself, has endured over the years and built his image in parallel with the G13BJJ, a team which he led in Brazil and now leads in american soil, furthering the reach of the gentle art in the US and spreading the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu among its people.

We’ve talked with Godoi and the chat revisited great moments in the teacher’s trajectory, from the first contact with the sport and his first academy to the analysis of his many years as a black belt, including valuable tips for you to successfully walk the path of constant learning in the gentle art.

Check the interview below and learn with Roberto Godoi!

GRACIEMAG: First and foremost: how did your classic nickname, “Jason” come about?

ROBERTO GODOI: (Laughter). That’s a good one. The nickname was born at Waldomiro “Junior” Perez’s academy. I was one of the toughest workouts in the gym and almost always wore a dirty gi that had a rip or two. Despite being young at the time, I also never had much hair, and this all coincided with the success of the films in the series “Friday The 13th”. When Junior was going to separate the training duos, he would say: “Go, you’ll train with Jason!”. But the one who made the nickname stick and led me to embrace it was a good friend of ours, who developed my first patch for the gi; when I saw it, it was a Jason doll in a mask and gi! The younger kids always thought it was awesome, but I never really cared.

You have more than three decades in Jiu-Jitsu, with more than twenty of those years as a black belt. What has been the most memorable experience in all these years?

That’s right, I was promoted to black belt at the end of 1996, and for many years I’ve proudly carried it around my waist. I fondly remember my first fights as a black belt, at the 1997 IBJJF Hawaii Pan. At the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, I got third place at Tijuca Tênis Clube and it was a unique moment. We used to live real adventures, with car caravans leaving São Paulo, crashes in the Serra das Araras, the suffering of weigh-ins the day before… I remember this one time i ran around the gym for three hours and still had to weigh naked to beat the limit and be allowed to fight. We stayed in small fifth-rate hotels, huddled together, sneaking in the middle of the night so the managers wouldn’t notice. These are stories that people hardly believe nowadays.

It’s been more than thirty years competing nonstop. How do you think this constancy in the championships helps you, as a teacher and as a citizen?

Nowadays, as a 47-year-old athlete, my body now recovers from the various injuries I’ve had during that time, and with that comes some limitations, but that’s not going to stop me, at least not now! I’m passionate about that feeling of stepping on the mat, testing myself, listening to the guys saying that so-and-so is in my division and that he’s trained hard to win. It’s these feelings that keep that child’s flame burning inside me, the desire to train similar to when I started in the sport. Competing also makes me a better professional every day – the objective is not to prove anything to anyone but to pursue the continuous evolution and balance of my Jiu-Jitsu, not to mention the improvement of our group as a whole.

It’s that Rickson Gracie quote, studying and learning never end…

Yes, because Jiu-Jitsu evolves and modernizes every year. I know I have a lot to learn and improve; with that, competing and training with my students daily forces me to keep up to date with the latest in our art. Furthermore, championships are great for seeing friends, sharing laughs, expanding our network of contacts, among many other benefits for a teacher.

How did you start training Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-Jitsu came into my life by chance. When I was a kid, the school I went to sometimes had fights, and in my class, there was a kid from Argentina who could hold his own in a brawl. One day, this guy went to Rio de Janeiro for the year’s end and came back shocked. He called me and said: “If you don’t want to be beaten by anyone else in your life, you have to learn what I saw in Rio!”. He had visited a Gracie academy and said that he had been twisted in every way: “Dino (that was my nickname), this is what you need to practice, it’s called Jiu-Jitsu!”.

And was it easy to find a gym in São Paulo?

I learned that Marcelo Behring, who was already a famous champion trained by Rickson, had just arrived in São Paulo in 1988. I went there but the gym was too sought after and the training was expensive, so I couldn’t afford it. I got lucky that my brother came back from the US and gave me a brand new jacket, which I sold for the price of three months of training and got started. It was there that I met Waldomiro, who was Marcelo’s right-hand man and later would be my teacher and great friend.

What was the most memorable fight of your career?

All of them had their valor and brought great learning. But I don’t feel able to summarize in a moment, or personal achievement, my entire trajectory in Jiu-Jitsu. My greatest achievement in the sport was, without a doubt, the number of people and lives I could help improve, not only those who trained with me but their families and friends as well.

Do you still remember your first gym?

I was still a purple belt, in 1992, when, alongside a friend, I decided to set up the first gym I had, in the back of my house. It was small there, with enough room for about 15 students per class, and in the first month we already had 30 students training – and about ten waiting for a vacancy. Today, our G13BJJ school has been structuring itself more and more at the company level and seeking to give full support and feedback to its franchised students and teachers. The structure is unimaginable, comparing it to that gym in the back of the house. Our concern today is to ensure that G13BJJ is seen and recognized as a “martial arts school”, with us fulfiling our role as good educators.

We teach both students who think about competing and those who dream of being an entrepreneur and knowing how to teach and manage their own business one day. Today we have more than 7,000 students in 71 units, 55 of those in Brazil, between São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Tocantins, Bahia, and Santa Catarina. Outside Brazil, there are five in the US and one in Australia.

What tips would you give to succeed in Jiu-Jitsu and reach a black belt?

It is difficult to summarize in a few tips, because there are many variables involved. But I would say number one is discipline, to train constantly and not give up; the second is health – for your machine to work well, take care of it; the third is self-confidence: believe in yourself, and don’t let anyone or anything tell you that you can’t or aren’t capable!

Will effort always beat talent in Jiu-Jitsu?

I’m sure talent without discipline and a lot of effort gets us nowhere. Since I was a kid, I liked to fight, but I’ve always been tougher and more persevering than a talented guy himself. In several of the fights and championships I’ve won, I’ve been successful knowing that to be victorious I would first have to overcome my lack of talent. I’m certainly a tougher guy today because I have that focus and because I know what I’m made of. I always strive to be a better Godoi today than I was yesterday.

One of your strengths is sticking your hand in the collar, standing or on the ground, always triggering a blow… How does this tactic of yours work?

We must first remember that our fight starts standing up before going to the ground, so it is evident that, whether for takedowns, sweeps, or pulling to guard, all positions have their preparations and nuances, especially these details of grips on collars and sleeves to make it happen successfully. Standing, I try to exert my dominant left-hand grip on the opponent’s collar, and when I get it, it opens up a good range of attacks and positions for me, details that I pass on to everyone on our team. But Jiu-Jitsu isn’t always what we want, it’s the opportunities that arise at the time of the fight, so in our routine training at G13, we focus on both our strong game and our weak side, to try to increase the balance and elevate our game.

You’ve done seven MMA fights and started back in 1995. What did you learn about Jiu-Jitsu and about yourself stepping into these rings?

Those were different times, in which it was a natural way to migrate and fall into MMA at some point in their trajectory, even to seek this “validation” of their degree. And with me, it was no different. I learned several lessons in MMA and I am grateful for each experience that today adds to the baggage I have, and so I can contribute to achieving the goals of my athletes, be those professional or not. My dream is to serve as a ramp for all my students to reach much further than me.

You, like many teachers, went through a change of image that is similar to the evolution that took place with Jiu-Jitsu: in the past, it gave a strong image; today, you resemble a father of the students, respectful, cordial to opponents… Is the current Jason a peaceful one?

Yes, it’s a natural maturation of mine as a person, which happened in parallel with the transformation of Jiu-Jitsu’s values as a sport and a lifestyle around the world. I was at the front of a group and was a “master” very early on, and with this immaturity, I had my mistakes, but also my successes. Back then, that was a stereotype stuck in most Jiu-Jitsu fighters, but nowadays I’m better prepared as a person, in every way, to fill my position. I owe much of this to my parents and to what I learned in Jiu-Jitsu, for being this unique tool for emotional balance and rescue of moral values that, practiced daily, shapes us and those around us so that we can have a more harmonious and all-around better society.

In 2001, Godói-Macaco, which had been projected on the São Paulo sports circuit, broke up. What lessons did you learn from the breakup?

Godoi-Macaco in its heyday was unique, and whoever lived that, lived! I won’t take it for granted and am proud of everyone who went there. I don’t mean to besmirch so many others who fought hard for it in SP, but we were one of the main reasons for the rise of Jiu-Jitsu in São Paulo and Brazil at the time. We helped build it in São Paulo and I always believed in myself, I knew my role and value within the team. This was reflected in my self-confidence and total security, which didn’t make me fear the separation or starting from scratch. But that’s the summary of Jiu-Jitsu, the art prepares us to be champions in life. I just focused on work, not listening to the naysayers, because “the dogs bark and the caravan passes by”.

In December, it was ten years since Ryan’s death. What do you think was his importance for Jiu-Jitsu?

Ryan’s loss represented the loss of a great fighter, it was great human material. But Ryan lost to himself. Often the biggest battles we face in our lives are not against face-to-face or physical body opponents that we can physically hit. That’s why the fight is often unequal and why we shouldn’t judge anyone. Controversial or not, he was always an aggregator and was regarded by his students as a natural leader. His coming to SP, regardless of all the “causes”, did contribute to the promotion of Jiu-Jitsu in our state and revealed many athletes and friends which I’ll carry for the rest of my life. Nowadays, they carry his legacy and name around the world.
The post Roberto Godoi recalls his mishaps and victories in Jiu-Jitsu first appeared on Graciemag.

The BJJ student who seeks to train religiously and be blessed by constant progress must avoid the vices that harm their health, whether of body, mind or soul. In an article originally printed on Brazilian Graciemag, our team recruited masters and black-belts of great renown to help readers pursue virtue and become more illuminated fighters.

Read below about the seven deadly sins applied to the life of the BJJ fighter, and fess up: which of them is currently hindering your evolution? Recognizing the problem and fighting it may help you improve your training as early as today. To Fabio Gurgel, for example, nothing is worse than pride or vanity at the gym.

“A fight may be the worst place to commit deadly sins,” he said. “After all, the price, as well as being high, is charged quickly. Sooner or later the fighter shows who they really are — whether in the wrath that impedes their reasoning, in the envy that makes him notice others more than themselves, or in the sloth that doesn’t let them train.”

1. Pride

Also known as vanity. It’s the sin of those who are excessively arrogant. “Pride may be the most common sin,” said Gurgel. “It’s the guy who thinks he’s better than the others, who always needs to be at the top, who needs to be mentioned in every magazine article and who thinks he’s most important than the rest.

“When this guy’s mask falls, however, we see a weak, mediocre individual, who hasn’t learned the basic lessons of BJJ.”

To Gurgel, pride has an effective antidote: humility. “It’s the only remedy. The fighter must worry only about his constant evolution and not about causing the envy of others.” The General added: “Vanity is a trap in which many fall, and it’s hard for them to get back up.”

2. Greed

Exhibited by those who care too much about material possessions. In the dojo, the worst sin is to be cheap with techniques and not sharing knowledge with your training partners. To Xande Ribeiro, there is also the figure of the athlete who won’t display more than one or two of their techniques, just enough to win by advantages. “BJJ is born to be a rich art, to present thousands of options of escape to one problem,” he said. “The cheap fighter insists on just doing the same thing and is happy with this economy of techniques. From being so cheap, they end up being rude, poor of friends, and no one wants to train with them anymore.”

3. Lust

The passionate, selfish desire for all corporal and material pleasures. It can be the ruin of those who let themselves be dominated by passions and addictions. Grandmaster Carlos Gracie used to recommend fighters have sex in moderation. He added, “Whatever philosophical or religious orientation we follow, it must never mean lack of care for the body with which we came to this world.”

4. Envy

The sin of those who ignore the blessings they have and desire the status and skills earned by others. “You must never compare yourself to your training partners, but rather to yourself, to your old version from a long time ago, when you began training,” said Master Carlos Rosado. “It’s the best way to gauge your evolution and not succumb to the pressure of having the same skill as the teammates around you. No one is the same as anyone else.” So don’t envy; train hard instead.

5. Gluttony

Gluttony prevents the fighter from eating adequately, respecting the times for digestion and wise choices for food, such as fruits, salads and light meals before training. “When we eat well, we’re always light enough to train and we have good digestion. When the guy eats big meal, it’ll be a while until he can train again, or he’ll get to the gym feeling slow and heavy,” said Royler Gracie. “Our body works like a machine. If you put in fouled fuel, it will complain; if you put in normal gas, it will run just fine. If you invest in premium gas, it will run much better still. I don’t drink alcohol and I follow the Gracie Diet, and I recommend it.”

Josh Hedges/UFC

6. Wrath

During training, wrath is a highly harmful sin that makes a fighter hurt other students and get a bad reputation. In competitions, it’s a surefire way to get defeated. “BJJ has to be tackled with cold blood, with professionalism and also with a hint of fun,” Rubens Cobrinha taught us. “Wrath is not a useful feeling during a fight, because it makes the athlete more nervous than normal, and stops him from follow his opponent’s reasoning and movement. After the fight, you may even go and be mad at the loss, a train thrice as hard to make up for it, using anger as motivation. But never during a competition or training session.”

7. Sloth

In BJJ, an excessively slow student may piss of their instructors. It’s the capital sin of those who are late for training due to neglect, and of those who don’t care enough to keep their gi clean. To Kyra Gracie, this is the biggest enemy of consistency in your training. “There are always those days where the body doesn’t want to get out of bed, but sloth can never be allowed to take over. Once the training plan put in place, we have to follow it thoroughly. It’s on the rainy and cloudy days that true champions are born, as the saying goes.”

Kyra Gracie vs. Luanna Alzuguir at the 2009 Worlds.
[ By Eduardo “Dudu” F.* ]

I

I never pictured myself training BJJ, because I don’t have that much strength. Not even my strength of will is anything to write home about. I’m kind of like Bartleby, a character who would lazily say, “I would prefer not to.” Nevertheless, off I went. First class, wearing only the top part of the gi, basketball shorts and a kids’ yellow belt where the word “loser” wouldn’t be out of place.

II

Right away, stretching. Something I have no familiarity with. First pull to stretch the posterior thigh muscle and pow — that feeling like a fish hook. Had it happened during a soccer game, I would have spun my index fingers above my head to signal the need to be replaced on the team. But I can’t leave the mat during stretching — it’s pathetic, I thought. I swallowed that pain and had a brilliant idea: on the first play, I’ll pretend to fall wrong. A detail I only noticed later: BJJ is played on the floor; there are no takedowns in one’s first class. Moving on!

III

Unsurprisingly, I got run over by everyone I trained with, including a teenager who could be my son, the bastard. At the end of the session — destroyed exhausted, swept, frustrated and sweaty like one who just climbed the stairs to the Church of Our Lady of Penha to thank the statue for a miracle delivered — I hear my teacher ask me whether I liked the class. The answer is weird to me even now: yes! In fact, I returned the next day.

IV

A class on self-defense techniques — pretty cool. The master teaches how to get rid of that asshole who comes from behind to bother you. But the examples he used didn’t look too close to my real life. It was always some guy trying to steal some other guy’s girlfriend in the club, an environment I no longer frequent. I proceeded to adapt the content. A mailman insisting on delivering an overdue bill; a reckless old lady almost blinding me on the street with her umbrella; my boss trying to catch up to get me to stay late. That worked much better.

V

I’m in side control on top of a purple-belt girl with a cute hairstyle and a gi with details in animal print. Eventually she gives me the tip for freeing myself from her guard: “Squash my head on the mat.” Well, all I could think of was her hair, but I complied. “Do it for real!” she commanded. Hair be damned.

VI

All that were put in front of me were alerted that that was my fourth class, that they should take it easy on yours truly. My desire was to interrupt and say “On the other hand, I’m good at basketball and can hold my own on a skateboard!” But I shut up and breathe, and the session starts.

VII

BJJ is the gentle art, the master told me before one of the classes. Minutes later, with a reckless student squeezing a choke on me, holding the lapel of my gi with absurd strength, I questioned that gentleness. But indeed, everybody was nice and receptive. I felt welcome and, most important, respected. Perhaps that was the gentleness the master was talking about. Next time I’ll tell you about the following weeks.

[ Por: Eduardo F., vulgo Dudu * ]

I

Nunca me imaginei treinando Jiu-Jitsu porque não tenho tanta força assim. No entanto, lá fui eu.

A resposta me causa estranheza até agora: Sim! Inclusive, voltei no dia seguinte.

IV

Mas me calo, respiro e o treino recomeça.

VII

Me senti acolhido, e principalmente, respeitado.

In a recent interview for Graciemag’s Brazilian print edition, the world’s absolute no-gi king, Gordon Ryan, fielded questions by our staff and readers — not all of them friendly. Not dodging any of them, Ryan discussed how he trains, what he thinks about while fighting, and how he sees his rivals.

Here’s an excerpt of that interview conducted by Marcelo Dunlop.

GRACIEMAG: Who would be your biggest rival today?

GORDON RYAN: My biggest rival I’d say is for sure Felipe [Pena, aka Preguiça]. He’s the only person who legitimately beat me twice at black belt. I feel I had pretty much all of the submission attempts in the 1st match, which lasted over 40 minutes. But then, of course, he hit the beautiful back-take off my ashi garami. Then the 2nd match I feel like I 100% dictated the pace of the match until again he hit the same back-take as the 1st match with under 2 minutes left. I think at this point Felipe will be the only competitive match for me with without the gi. And one of the only guys whose game is good enough to compete against me under any rule set.

You often say that Coach John Danaher has a unique view of jiu-jitsu. What was the concept taught by John that changed your life?

Danaher looks at the sport in a completely different way than anyone else. Everyone else has “their favorite moves” where they put you in their preferred attacking positions and use their favorite moves/tricks from there. But if you look at a lot of these guys at black belt world level, once you actually take them out of their comfort zone and put them in a position they’re not used to, they actually don’t know what to do. So John’s whole approach to the sport is a series of systems designed to put these guys in positions they’re not used to, which are the same positions we live in on a daily basis. And with this approach we were easily able to overcome world-level athletes winning at black belt since before we started training in under 5 years’ time.

What did you learn fighting Yuri in the 2018 No Gi Worlds’ absolute final?

Finals with Yuri was kind of disappointing. I beat him 11-0 earlier in the day, submitted him twice before that — once in EBI OT and once at Kasai. So I thought I’d be able to finish him on that day. But he was able to make some good adjustments to stall better in the finals. If there was anything to learn it was that Brazilians get really mad when refs don’t give them the calls they want. [Laughs.] If Yuri would have won by advantage, all the haters would have said I suck. But I win by advantage and all the Brazilians at the event were crying the refs robbed Yuri. [Laughs.] When in IBJJF history has a ref ever robbed a Brazilian and given the American a win? Literally never. Maybe I just won the match? Could it be possible a gringo is actually good at this sport?
