Há dez anos, em maio de 2014, o hotel Hilton em Long Beach, Califórnia, recebeu os maiores astros do mundo do Jiu-Jitsu para a festa de inauguração do Hall da Fama do esporte. A IBJJF aproveitou para premiar os melhores atletas e escuderias da temporada, mas o destaque da noite foi mesmo a cerimônia para os membros do Hall da Fama do Jiu-Jitsu.

Michelle Nicolini foi a primeira a ser chamada ao palco para receber sua placa. Cinco vezes campeã mundial na faixa-preta com o ouro pioneiro no absoluto feminino, Nicolini saudou a Federação pela iniciativa: “É muito gratificante receber este tipo de reconhecimento”. Letícia Ribeiro e Hannette Staack, ambas sete vezes campeãs mundial na faixa-preta, foram chamadas a seguir.

“Quando comecei a treinar, eu era a única menina na academia. Queria aprender a me defender. Agora sou professora e empresária”, disse Hannette.

Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” foi o primeiro homem a subir no palco. Rominho Barral, Rodolfo Vieira e Fabio Gurgel viriam a seguir. Marcus Buchecha, Bruno Malfacine, Saulo e Xande Ribeiro e Roger Gracie fecharam a festa com suas placas.

Uma década depois, o Hall da Fama conta com diversos outros ídolos que mudaram a cara do esporte. Os grandes mestres Rolls e Carlson Gracie, Bernardo Faria, André Galvão, Marcelo Garcia, Royler Gracie, Guilherme Mendes, Lucas Lepri e o saudoso Leandro Lo também estão no panteão do esporte, assim como Roberto Roleta, Robinho Moura, Romero Jacaré e Carlos Gracie Jr.

No feminino, estão eternizadas lá as colecionadoras de ouro Bia Mesquita, Gabi Garcia, Bianca Barreto, Luanna Alzuguir e Kyra Gracie.

Maior evento de grappling do mundo, o ADCC será disputado neste fim de semana, nos dias 17 e 18 de setembro, em Las Vegas. Realizado pela última vez em 2019, o torneio contabiliza 97 atletas inscritos nesta edição e conta com um dos duelos mais aguardados do momento. Atual ouro duplo da competição, o americano Gordon Ryan medirá forças com o brasileiro André Galvão na superluta.

Gordon Ryan pretende acabar com a hegemonia de André Galvão no ADCC. O pupilo de John Danaher, no auge dos seus 27 anos, vive ótima fase nos tatames e conseguiu triunfos sobre Pedro Marinho e o arquirrival Felipe Preguiça nos últimos meses. Por outro lado, Galvão fez seu último teste em março deste ano, quando empatou com o holandês Reinier de Ridder, em combate de grappling promovido pelo One Championship.

Uma possível vitória de Ryan sobre Galvão representaria uma sucessão do trono. Afinal, André é o nome a ser batido. Aos 39 anos, Galvão defenderá o cinturão da superluta pela quarta vez. Campeão peso e absoluto do torneio em 2011, o líder da Atos assumiu o posto em 2013, quando finalizou Braulio Estima. De lá para cá, o veterano derrotou em sequência Roberto Cyborg, Claudio Calasans e Felipe Preguiça nas edições anteriores. Dono de um jogo ofensivo e finalizador, o impetuoso americano tentará acabar com o longevo reinado do adversário.

Ao todo, seis dos sete atuais campeões estão confirmados no ADCC 2022. O único que ficou fora desta edição foi o veterano Augusto Tanquinho, vencedor da categoria até 66 kg. Já JT Torres, Matheus Diniz, Gordon Ryan, Kaynan Duarte, Bia Basilio e Gabi Garcia estarão presentes em Las Vegas a fim de repetir a façanha. Tetracampeã do evento, Gabi é a mulher com mais títulos na história do ADCC e ultrapassaria Marcelinho Garcia na liderança geral, caso vença neste ano.

Um ingrediente a mais para os fãs de grappling são as estreias de joias da nova geração no ADCC. Talentos como Mica Galvão, Diogo Reis, Fabricio Andrey, Cole Abate e Kade Ruotolo prometem acirrar a disputa pela medalha de ouro. Companheiros de equipe na Escola Melqui Galvão e melhores amigos, Diogo e Fabricio podem se enfrentar, já que estão confirmados na divisão até 66 kg. Forte candidato ao ouro na categoria até 77 kg, Mica, de 18 anos, pode se tornar o lutador mais jovem da história a vencer o ADCC. Diante do retrospecto vitorioso do manauara, não há como duvidar do possível feito.

Se há novatos que pretendem entrar para história, os veteranos do Jiu-Jitsu terão que provar que ainda estão em forma para conter o ímpeto dos mais jovens. Casos dos experientes, Xande Ribeiro, Vagner Rocha, Josh Hinger, Rafael Lovato Jr, Yuri Simões, Orlando Sanchez e Roberto Cyborg.

Não há como ser diferente. Depois de três anos de espera, o ADCC está de volta com promessa de disputas acirradas e a definição do reinado do grappling. André Galvão ou Gordon Ryan? Apenas um destes sairá com o cinturão, ou melhor, com a coroa, após a superluta.

It’s already the new year in Japan, and to close out 2018 with a golden key, the Rizin Fighting Federation, which was assembled to put the fondly remembered Pride FC back together, kept up the tradition of holding an MMA event to mark the turn of the year. And Rizin 14 was no slouch, bringing 30 thousand people to Tokyo’s Saitama Super Arena.

In the night’s most highly anticipated bout, undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather made his debut in an MMA event — an exhibition match under boxing rules against kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa. Wearing boxing gloves, the 41-year-old legend barely registered the presence of Nasukawa, a 20-year-old undefeated in kickboxing (28 wins) and MMA (four wins).

Mayweather, who is bigger and heavier, went in smiling. After the first punch thrown by Nasukawa, Mayweather picked up the pace, achieving three consecutive knock-downs and forcing his opponent’s corner to throw in the towel in round 1.

The co-main event was a crossover of federations, with Rizin’s Kyoji Horiguchi facing Bellator champion Darrion Caldwell. Victory went to the Japanese fighter, who managed to free himself from Caldwell’s sticky game to finish via guillotine in round 3.

Prior to these fights, Gabi Garcia, the world BJJ champion undefeated in MMA, stepped in the ring to defend her perfect record against fellow Brazilian fighter Barbara Nepomuceno. After landing some strikes and shortening the distance, Gabi took the action to the ground, arrived in side control and employed her well-known americana.

Já é ano novo no Japão, e para fechar 2018 com chave de ouro, o Rizin Fighting Federation, evento criado para remontar o finito Pride, manteve a tradição oriental de realizar lutas de MMA na virada do ano. O dia 31 de dezembro foi a data marcada para o Rizin 14, que reuniu quase 30 mil pessoas no Saitama Super Arena, em Tóquio.

Na luta mais aguardada da noite, Floyd Mayweather, invicto boxer profissional, fez sua primeira caminhada num evento de MMA, em duelo de exibição com regras de boxe contra o kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa. Com luvas de boxe nas mãos, Floyd, aos 41 anos, não tomou conhecimento do jovem de 20 anos que é invicto no kickboxing com 28 sucessos e invicto também no MMA, com quatro vitórias.

Floyd, maior e mais pesado que o adversário japonês, entrou sorridente e sem preocupações na luta. Após o primeiro soco atirado por Tenshin, Floyd acelerou, aplicou três knockdowns seguidos e forçou o córner japonês a jogar a toalha, ainda no primeiro assalto de três programados.

Na luta coprincipal, uma sonhada disputa entre federações de MMA finalmente foi realizada. Atleta do Rizin, Kyoji Horiguchi encarou o campeão do Bellator Darrion Caldwell, e o duelo foi definido com vitória para o japonês, que conseguiu se livrar do jogo “carrapato” de Caldwell para finalizar na guilhotina a 1min11s do terceiro assalto.

An ADCC champion undefeated in MMA after four fights, Gabi Garcia notched her fifth win last Saturday at Road FC 47, held in Beijing.

Her opponent, Russia’s Veronika Futina, started out well. With no regard for Gabi’s size, she dived right in. Gabi did some standup striking, but it was on the ground that she tilted the scales in her favor.

Having landed on the mount, Gabi attacked from the top with punches, forcing Futina to get on all fours. The rear naked choke finish came in round one.

Campeã mundial de Jiu-Jitsu e do ADCC, invicta no MMA com quatro sucessos, Gabi Garcia somou sua quinta vitória no cartel perfeito no último sábado, dia 12 de maio, no Road FC 47, realizado em Pequim, na China.

Sua adversária, a russa Veronika Futina, entrou bem na disputa. Sem respeitar o tamanho e o peso de Gabi, Futina partiu para dentro. Gabi chegou a trocar em pé, mas foi no solo que a campeã desequilibrou a seu favor.

Depois de cair montada, Gabi atacou por cima com socos e obrigou Futina a se colocar de quatro apoios. O bote no pescoço foi questão de tempo, e a finalização no mata-leão veio ainda no primeiro round.

Once, after beating ultra-heavyweight Luiz Felipe Big Mac, Alexandre Souza said, “You don’t take down a big mountain; you climb it.” If you are an opponent of Gabi Garcia who currently can’t beat her, then practice and study more. Adopting the rude strategy of dissing the absolute champion is typical of those who have gotten the jiu-jitsu spirit all wrong. Great opponents can shape our character and our game.

4. Lesson from Tyler Brey

In Long Beach, the blue-belt from Infinite Jiu-Jitsu proved that you don’t need a black belt to thrill a crowd. His legs rendered useless by a congenital spinal defect, Tyler parked his wheelchair at ringside and dove on in. “If you limit yourself, you’ll never get anywhere,” said the fresh-faced Californian. “I don’t have it all, but God gave me what I need to do what I want.” Stop whining about the difficulties and ask yourself how you can make a difference.

5. Lesson from Angélica Galvão

André’s wife took five years off from training to take care of her daughter. Even after so much time on the sidelines, she came back and became purple belt world champion. Find inspiration in her accomplishment; keep in shape and get back to training tomorrow, regardless of your reasons for having put Jiu-Jitsu on hold in the first place.

6. Lesson from Braga Neto

The Roberto Gordo pupil won the world championship in 2008, after which he had a run of poor results until capturing his second title, this year in California. Persist, keep training and believing; after all, storms and fair weather are a normal part of any journey.

7. Lessons from the Mendes brothers

The first brothers crowned black-belt world champions in the same year, they started out together and made it to the top together. Invite the ones you love to train with you. Jiu-Jitsu only strengthens the bonds – and helps with your objectives.

8. Lesson from Pé de Pano

Early in 2011, Márcio Cruz told GRACIEMAG.com he would be making his return and pursuing a medal at the Worlds. Keeping his word, the black-belt commonly known as Pé de Pano only hit a wall in an evenly matched semifinal with Cavaca. If you truly believe the promises you make, state them, share them with friends and even rivals. Hold yourself to them and make ’em happen.

9. Lesson from Hannette Quadros

Dare. If the move being offered by your opponent is a flying armbar, go for it, and rush to the crowd to celebrate.

10. Lesson from Letícia Ribeiro

Letícia said her student Bia Mesquita is the reason she can’t quit competing. Iron forges iron; steel shapes steel. Teach your training partners everything you know so you’ll continue to evolve – and win alongside them.

11. Lesson from Léo Nogueira

Winning the absolute gold medal at the Brazilian Nationals a few weeks prior was key in his success at the Worlds. Hiding your game may be effective, but testing it against the best is far more productive. Be prepared to face challenges the moment they surface.

12. Lesson from Cris Cyborg and Ben Henderson

Jiu-Jitsu may not be your only concern in life, but it should be top of the list of the less important ones. Train, test yourself at all times, and you may just nab a bronze medal to show your friends at the UFC like Ben did, or a gold medal to show off around Strikeforce like Cris did.

13. Lesson from Marcelo Garcia

Be wary of beaten old precepts like “It’s easy to make it to the top; what’s hard is staying there.” Plenty of superstars toiled doggedly in the lower belt divisions, facing all the challenges they could handle, stomped on their egos, and today they seem to win on autopilot. That’s the case of Marcelinho, who took on all the absolute had to offer at brown belt, developed an unbeatable game, and is now five-time middleweight world champion.

14. Lesson from Alexander Trans

So what if what you’ve been doing is hardly acknowledged in your country or not ackowledged at all? Fight, hone your skills, and strive to be the best in your country at what you do. In time you may, for example, come from Denmark to become champion of the world in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu…

15. Lesson from Luanna Alzuguir

Cracked rib in the heat of battle? Well, then. Get a quick finish, grab your gold medal, and go get it taken care of happier and more fulfilled.

16. Lesson from Rodolfo Vieira

Don’t let titles or glory change the way you see the world and do things. A short tale from Graciemag’s World Championship Blog illustrates it. On day 1 at the Worlds, Rodolfo got in a lengthy line like everyone else to collect the IBJJF T-shirt and copy of GRACIEMAG to which all 2,300 athletes signed up were entitled. Getting near his turn, Rodolfo stuck a hand in his pocket and realized he didn’t have his IBJJF ID, promptly leaving the line and telling a friend: “Shoot, I didn’t bring my card; I’ll come back tomorrow. There’s no way to prove I’m signed up for the Worlds.”

“What are you talking about, you nut?” his friend replied. “You’re on the cover of the magazine you’re about to pick up. Everybody knows you are you.”

Even so, Rodolfo stuck to the rules and left, returning the next day to pick up his magazine and T-shirt, happy as a lark.

The first day of the 2017 ADCC Worlds, held in Espoo, Finland, shattered BJJ fans’ expectations worldwide. Saturday saw the semifinalists defined for every weight division of the men’s and women’s sections, and brought the superfight between André Galvão and Cláudio Calasans, old teammates at Atos.

In the last match of day 1, childhood friends Galvão and Calasans held nothing back. At first there was balance, with Calasans shooting for judo takedowns while Galvão sought to undo his foe’s base with a hand on the neck and attacks on the legs. In a single-leg attempt, Galvão got Calasans on the ground, and Calasans then tried for a shoulder lock, which Galvão handled well.

At the end of the first ten minutes, which is when points start being counted, Galvão again achieved a single-leg, then attacked from the back and accumulated 12 points by swapping hooks — a peculiar trait of ADCC rules. Unable to finish from the back, Galvão mounted and attempted the kata-gatame, which Calasans resisted.

Even with a 14-point advantage, Galvão continued to crank up the pressure until the 20th and final minute, achieving his third consecutive win in ADCC superfights. He had beaten Bráulio Estima from the back in 2013, and Roberto Cyborg in 2015.

Upset in group of death as favorites advance too

Craig Jones dealt the big upset of day 1. In his first match he finished Leandro Lo, one of the favorites to win it all in the 88kg division, with a tight rear naked choke. Then he applied a nice flying triangle on the experienced Murilo Santana, thus securing his spot in the semifinal match against Keenan Cornelius, who had defeated up-and-comer Kaynan Casemiro.

Also noteworthy were Pablo Mantovani, who beat Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes by decision, and Elvira Karppinen, who outscored sitting 60kg champion Mackenzie Dern 4-2, sweeping twice and resisting Dern’s signature RNC from the omoplata toward the end.

Many of the favorites advanced as well. Marcus Buchecha had two submission wins. Rubens Cobrinha, Paulo Miyao, Xande Ribeiro, Yuri Simões, Felipe Preguiça and Lucas Lepri also made it. Gabi Garcia, Bia Mesquita and Talita Treta are also still in the running.

O primeiro dia do ADCC 2017, realizado na cidade de Espoo, no estado de Helsinque, na Finlândia, quebrou várias expectativas dos fãs de Jiu-Jitsu em todo mundo. Neste sábado, dia 23 de setembro, foram definidos os semifinalistas de todas as categorias, no masculino e feminino, além de trazer a aguardada superluta entre André Galvão e Cláudio Calasans, velhos parceiros de treinos na Atos.

Na última luta do dia de abertura, os amigos de infância Galvão e Calasans não mediram esforços para conquistar o título da superluta. O começo foi marcado pelo equilíbrio e tentativas de queda de Calasans com técnicas de judô, enquanto Galvão buscava tirar a base do oponente com a mão no pescoço e ataques nas pernas. Em uma tentativa no single-leg, André levou Calasans ao solo, e este atacou na chave de ombro, bem defendida por Galvão.

Ao fim dos primeiros dez minutos, que marcavam o início da contagem de pontos, Galvão derrubou mais uma vez no single-leg, atacou pelas costas e acumulou 12 pontos na troca de ganchos, uma peculiaridade das regras do ADCC. Sem conseguir finalizar pelas costas, Galvão montou, tentou o kata-gatame e Calasans, duro na queda, resistiu ao golpe.

Mesmo com 14 a 0 no placar, Galvão continuou a acelerar o combate, até o fim dos 20 minutos que marcaram a terceira vitória seguida de André Galvão em superlutas do ADCC – ele vencera Bráulio Estima nas costas em 2013 e Roberto Cyborg em 2015.

Zebra rouba a cena no grupo da morte e favoritos também avançam

Nas divisões de peso deste ADCC 2017, fortes duelos foram apresentados nos três tatames montados na Espoo Arena. Nomes famosos do cenário e jovens talentos dividiram espaço na busca pela vaga nas semifinais. Entre as zebras, destaque para Craig Jones. Em sua primeira luta, Jones finalizou Leandro Lo, que figurava entre os favoritos ao título, com um justo mata-leão. Em seguida, aplicou um belo triângulo voador no experiente Murilo Santana, e assim garantiu sua vaga na semifinal contra Keenan Cornelius, que despachou a revelação Kaynan Casemiro.

Outros destaques foram Pablo Mantovani, que mordeu a vaga no segundo após bater Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes na decisão, e Elvira Karppinen, que superou a atual campeã até 60kg Mackenzie Dern por 4 a 2, ao raspar duas vezes e resistir ao famigerado mata-leão da omoplata de Mackenzie no fim do combate.

Entre os favoritos, avançaram nomes como Marcus Buchecha, com duas finalizações anotadas; Rubens Cobrinha, Paulo Miyao, Xande Ribeiro, Yuri Simões, Felipe Preguiça e Lucas Lepri. No feminino, Gabi Garcia, Bia Mesquita e Talita Treta também seguem vivíssimas.

Bruno Malfacine contra Caio Terra no Pan de Jiu-Jitsu em 2015

A Alliance contará  com uma forte equipe em sua tentativa de ser o maior vencedora deste ano no Pan, que vai do dia 15 ao dia 19 março em Irvine, Califórnia. O time já confirmou a presença de três campeões mundiais nas baias do torneio.

O oito vezes campeão mundial Bruno Malfacine estará  na divisão dos galos. Seu último Pan foi em 2015, quando ganhou seu terceiro título. Outro inscrito é Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles , cujo último Pan foi em 2013. O quatro vezes campeão mundial terá a chance de obter seu quinto título na divisão dos penas no Pan.

E ainda há o retorno de Gabi Garcia aos tatames. Longe dos torneios oficiais de Jiu-Jitsu desde 2015, quando ela migrou para o MMA, ela está de volta para tentar reivindicar seu trono na divisão dos super pesados.
