After weeks of anticipation, the ADXC 4 is now officially completed. This Saturday, May 18th, some of the best competitors from Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling entered the merciless ADXC cage and fought tooth and nail to become the newest champions born at the Dojo de Paris, in the capital of France.

In the Grappling Main Event, the long-awaited duel between UFC powerhouses Benoit Saint Denis and Marc Diakiese gave fight fans everything they were hoping for and then some. Fighting in his homeland of France, Benoit used his grappling prowess to control the flow of the battle and emerge victorious in the ADXC cage. The fight almost ended quickly, with Benoit going for a neck attack and almost submitting in the very first round, but Diakiese’s top-notch defenses got him out of danger and kept the bout going, with many standing exchanges throughout the five rounds. But while Diakiese had some good moments, Benoit’s pressure was simply too much and the “God of War” left another foe in the dust, taking the win by unanimous decision and driving the crowd at the Dojo de Paris insane with the victory of their local champion.

Meanwhile, Espen Mathiesen spared no effort and is now a two-time champion of the ADXC. Fighting in the Jiu-Jitsu Main Event against France’s Leon Larman, the Norwegian athlete played to his strength and started the match by pulling and trying to use his berimbolo. Feeling the danger, Leon managed to avoid his opponent’s collar grips, but Espen spun and ended up in the foot. Going for the de la riva guard, Espen managed to get a better grip and got to the back, with Leon defending against the hooks but falling prey to a collar choke still in the first round.

The Grappling Co-Main Event brought another victory for Wales’ Ffion Davies in the ADXC. After sweeping from the closed guard and maintaining Morgan Black under complete pressure in the first round, Ffion finished the job in the following one. When the fighting started again, Ffion pulled Morgan into her guard, went up reaching the side, and quickly mounted, seizing her opponent’s arm and landing the winning armbar with a little over a minute on the clock.

In the Jiu-Jitsu Co-Main Event, Khaled Al Shehhi and Leonardo Mario found themselves evenly matched throughout the duel, which lasted five rounds of three minutes. Khaled started with a takedown, followed with a submission attempt and, when that didn’t work, used the single-leg to press Leonardo against the cage wall. Leonardo applied his pressure on Khaled’s guard, but the UAE powerhouse had a better run in the duel, using his technique to attack on top and even reach the side. When it was all said and done, Khaled had shown enough of his skills to convince the majority of the referees and conquer the title with a split decision.

While the Main and Co-Main Events were amazing in their own right, the ADXC 4 still had many impressive battles in its card. Check out below how the Main Card and Prelims Card matches went down!

Abdul-Kareem Al Sewady vs. Amin Ayoub

In another match-up between MMA athletes, Abdul-Kareem controlled the bout by putting pressure on Amin’s guard throughout the first two rounds, even managing to mount in the third round. Amin tried to attack with a guillotine, but Abdul-Kareem managed to avoid any danger and conquered the referees, who unanimously decided in favor of the “Pride of Palestine”.

Cassio Silva vs. Marko Oikarainen

In an intense rematch from the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rome 2024, the French-based Brazilian Cassio Silva once again defeated Finland’s Marko Oikarainen. With triangle, arm, and omoplata attacks, Cassio was the most dangerous competitor, even if Marko’s solid defenses kept him safe and sound in all three rounds. At the end of the fight, Cassio tipped the scales even further in his favor with another dangerous attack, taking the win by unanimous decision.

Nathiely de Jesus vs. Elizabeth Mitrovic

A very balanced duel between Nathiely and Elizabeth. With an active guard and dangerous sweep attempts, Eliza used her long legs to her favor against Nathiely, who used her experience and pressure from the top to control the duel. Being more active in the bout, Nathiely tried to take the back and even attacked the arm, convincing the referees and getting the win by unanimous decision.

Nia Blackman vs. Magdalena Loska

A brown belt hailing from the UK, Nia Black showed her resolve as she sought to beat the Polish black belt Magdalena Loska. Starting with the upper hand after attacking with a loop choke and an omoplata, Magdalena kept herself active while Nia countered her foot attacks, with the latter almost taking the back on the second and third rounds. With better moves from the guard and almost taking the back, Nia convinced the majority of the referees and got the win via split decision.

Steven Ray vs. Ibrahima Mane

In a duel between MMA veterans, Steven Ray proved himself an accomplished grappler. In the fight against Ibrahima, Steven had the best moves in the first and second rounds, going for foot and guillotine attacks. In the third round, with both fighters still standing, Steven set up another guillotine, took the fight to the ground, and got the submission with 2:05 on the clock.

Youness Bennouali vs. Florian Bayili

A brown belt fighting in his home country of France, Youness had an interesting duel against the Belgian black belt Florian Bayili. Keeping steady on his feet, Youness controlled the match with some good takedowns and submission attempts following the takedowns. Meanwhile, Florian employed his guard from below, but by the time the match ended, Youness’ stamina and techniques were enough to convince the majority of the referees, who gave him the win via split decision.

Geovanny Martinez vs. Nicolas Renier

10th Planet’s Geo Martinez used his grappling experience to make quick work of Nicolas Renier in the ADXC 4. The duel started with Geo pulling Nicolas into his closed guard and then quickly spinning around to reach the legs, locking a lightning-fast heel hook in just 27 seconds of the very first round.

Kalim Mastouri vs. Luca Anacoreta

An intense match between Kalim and Luca heated up the Prelims. With both sides dishing out attacks throughout the three rounds of the duel, triangle chokes and leglocks were the name of the game here. One of the bout’s highlights happened in the third round when Kalim took Luca down with a collar drag and almost took the back, with the latter narrowly escaping the position. At the end of it all, the referees unanimously declared Kalim the winner.

Kasper Larsen vs. Alexander Alexandrov

Kasper Larsen maintained the pressure throughout the fight, using his weight and technique to attack Alexander’s half-guard in the first two rounds. In the third round, after pushing Alexander against the cage wall, Kasper got Alexander down and quickly went for the back without the hooks, spinning below and entering a twister before locking the rear naked choke to take the victory.

Shamma Al Kalbani vs. Lina Grosset

A well-balanced fight between purple belts Shamma Al Kalbani and Lina Grosset. With the former hailing from the UAE and the latter fighting in her home country of France, the first round saw both athletes exchanging foot attacks while the following one brought a little more movement, with reversals and guard passing attempts. The third and final round saw Lina putting a lot of pressure from the top, but Shamma dished out some sneaky attacks and, at the end of it all, managed to convince the majority of the referees, who gave her the win via split decision.

Após três edições marcantes, o Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship desembarca em Paris, no próximo dia 18 de maio. O Dojo de Paris, ginásio localizado no coração da capital francesa e a poucos quilômetros da Torre Eiffel, foi escolhido como palco da competição, que terá 14 duelos de Jiu Jitsu e Grappling, com diversos atletas europeus renomados e três brasileiros no card.

Nas lutas principais, o norueguês ex-campeão do Abu Dhabi World Pro, Espen Mathiesen encara o francês multicampeão Léon Larman, pupilo de Caio Terra, no confronto de quimono, em duelo que promete ser um dos mais técnicos da noite. Espen retorna ao evento com moral, já que na segunda edição brilhou com uma vitória diante de Pablo Lavaselli. Já na disputa sem quimono, dois atletas do UFC medirão forças no octógono do ADXC. O francês Benoit Saint Denis e o inglês Marc Diakiese se enfrentam em um duelo explosivo pela categoria dos meio-médios.

No co-evento principal, dois duelos que também prometem. No grappling, a britânica Ffion Davies retorna ao evento, após uma performance irretocável no ADXC 2, e fica frente a frente com a norte-americana Morgan Black. Enquanto no Jiu Jitsu, o brasileiro Leonardo Mário, eleito o atleta do ano da AJP em 2021, faz a sua estreia na organização contra a revelação árabe Khaled Al Shehhi, atual campeão do AJP Grand Slam de Tóquio.

Outros dois brasileiros integram o card do ADXC 4. A campeã mundial Nathiely De Jesus enfrenta a norte-americana Elizabeth Mitrovic, e o experiente Cássio Silva, um dos brasileiros responsáveis por ajudar no desenvolvimento do Jiu Jitsu na França, luta contra o finlandês Marko Oikarainen.

After weeks of buildup, the Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship is proud to reveal its greatest mystery yet. With three stellar editions under its belt and its fifth installment set to take place in Abu Dhabi, fans stormed the organization’s social media with the unavoidable question: “What happened to ADXC 4?”. Now, the answer has arrived.

The ADXC’s fourth edition has been confirmed to land in Paris on May 18th. The Dojo de Paris, a gymnasium located in the heart of the French capital and just a few kilometers away from the Eiffel Tower, was chosen as the stage for the competition.

With its famous landmarks, extraordinary cuisine, and historical relevance, France is a sure shot when it comes to tourism, attracting millions of people every year. Much like the UAE with Jiu-Jitsu, Paris has a long-standing tradition when it comes to judo, and the city has been steadily adding other combat sports to its roster over the years. Now, it’s time for the ADXC to become a part of Paris’ history, bringing out the very best performance from its athletes and putting on another memorable show for fight fans.

In classic fashion, the tournament will feature 14 fights between Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling bouts, all held in the famous ADXC cage and divided into three-minute rounds. The organization has already promised a card packed with European powerhouses facing some of the best athletes from all over the world, all under one of the most dynamic rulesets in the sport.

The first Paris Open held on June 28-29.

The first IBJJF competition in France was always going to be an action-packed event, with competitors both foreign and local fighting for the opportunity to win that historic first gold and the black belt divisions on the first day definitely bore that out. Amongst all of the action on day one of the competition, the GFTeam duo of Igor Silva and Vinicius Marinho were the standouts of the black belt class, with both claiming gold in their divisions and closing out the absolute final.

Fighting up in the medium-heavyweight division (from his customary middleweight or lightweight) seemed to cause Vinicius Marinho little difficulty as he defeated Julien Da Silva 31-0 on points and submitted Braulio Estima student Chris Rees with an overhook armlock to set up a final with Poland’s Maksimilian Wisniewski. Wisniewski had defeated France’s Julien Cazier on his side of the bracket to reach the final. Marinho completed his dominant run, finishing with an ezekiel choke from the mount to take medium-heavyweight gold.

Igor Silva’s ultra-heavyweight category consisted only of him and his GFTeam teammate Leandro Vilar, with the two electing not to fight and giving Silva a chance to save his energy for the absolute division.

In the absolute, Silva didn’t look as if the lack of a warm-up division had hindered him at all, submitting France’s Julien Gaillard with a choke from the mount and finishing Marcelo Bernardo with a quick armbar from guard to reach the final.

Marinho defeated Chris Rees on points in their second match of the day and then due to an ankle injury from a previous match was able to pass by Filipe Bobrick to set up the all-GFTeam final. Silva took the top spot for the record books.

In other black belt divisions, the UK’s Oliver Geddes took gold in the lightweight division, submitting French local Douglas Barcelos with a kneebar and brand new Swiss black belt Ilke Bulut with an ankle lock. Bulut had submitted another local, Julien Gaillard, with a choke from the back to reach the final.

At middleweight, Diego Ferreira defeated the UK’s Gareth Neale and Cleiton Pinheiro to book his final spot against Switzerland’s Thomas Oyarzun, who had himself beaten Swiss-based Felipe Broa in the semifinal on his side of the bracket. Unfortunately, due to an illness coming into the tournament, Oyarzun had to forfeit the final after the strain of his previous match, giving Ferreira the championship.

Finally, the heavyweight division saw Checkmat’s Chico Mendes top the podium, defeating first Marcelo Bernado of Brazilian Power Team and then Filipe Bobrick of Alliance. Both fights came down to a referee decision, with Mendes taking the decisions with his relentless top game.

The women had their own share of action on the day too. An intensely competitive three-woman medium-heavyweight bracket saw Andrea Endy of the UAE defeat Sweden’s Ida Hansson on advantages in the first match, sending her across the bracket to face Laurence Cousin, the first European to win black belt world gold. That match was decided by a single advantage, with Hansson victorious and setting up a rematch in the final. Another frenetic match ensued, but at the final bell the scores were even and the referee decision gave Hansson her revenge and the championship.

MMA in France is not happening today. Maybe not for a long time.

According to a report by ESPN (U.K.), the French Ministry will continue to uphold their ban on MMA in the country. Citing an unnamed source from the Ministry, the report said the policy has not changed and no events, shows or practices of MMA are permitted on French soil.

In addition to the Ministry’s stance, Carole Brettville, Women’s Committee for Federation Francaise du Sport d’Entreprise President, told the outlet that she was flabbergasted that the UFC was lobbying to get the sport legalized in the country.

“I was appalled to find out how UFC was lobbying in France, especially when [told] how UFC has tolerated derogatory statements and attitudes against women,” she said. “We cannot allow such an organization to destroy all the work we have done to promote equality through French sports.”

Zuffa chairman Lorenzo Fertitta has made numerous recent trips to France in an effort to lobby for MMA’s legalization there, as well as making stops in surrounding territories.

UFC officials didn’t immediately reply to emails asking for comment regarding the French ban.

Last weekend showed professional commitments overseas for Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. However, even while in France, where he held various marketing activities in Paris alongside fellow Brazilians and UFC athletes, Wanderlei Silva and Jose Aldo, Shogun followed his schedule for his UFC 161 training camp.

Rua faces Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in his next fight, and the former UFC light heavyweight champion said he spent ever day on French soil training as much as he did attending to business.

“I’m following the schedule of my camp to prepare,” Shogun said. “I spent four days in France and trained every day under the supervision of my team. We are a few weeks from my next fight. It’s time to accelerate the pace of technical and physical training. I’m feeling great.”

The trip to France, Shogun said, was part of his campaign for the legalization of MMA in the country, and the Brazilian athlete is cheering for the goal to be reached soon. With the seminars, a book signing, and other activities, the French population received the athletes very well and crowds were at capacity.

“The French fans … were very welcoming and caring,” Shogun said. “The country deserves to legalize the sport, has a passionate audience and quality fighters, some even featured in the UFC.

The Rua-Silva UFC 161 bout is a rematch of their 2005 Pride bout. Shogun won the first match-up with a unanimous decision, which is revered in many MMA circles as one of the classics in the sport’s history.

From November 1 to 15 Cavalcanti led seminars in Luxembourg, Belgium, France and Germany.

At the first belt test for his association branch in Luxembourg he promoted ten students, pictured above.

He also led five students at the November 10 NAGA Europe tournament in Paris, taking home three medals. Standout student Mike Resch placed second in the masters blue belt featherweight Gi division as well as third in the masters intermediate featherweight No-Gi division.

The aim behind his European tour was to further the long-term advancement of his sport. “I spent 15 days in Europe spreading Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It was good to see the evolution of our sport in Europe,” he remarked.

With no break from his role as Jiu-Jitsu mentor, he was immediately back on the mats in his hometown of Las Vegas, where he aided his students in becoming the top team at Grappler’s Quest in Las Vegas, being handed the trophy from Grappler’s Quest director Brian Cimmins for the third year in a row.

France’s Jeremy Flores made history this month by winning the most prestigious stage of the world surfing circuit, Pipe Master, at the dreaded Pipeline in Hawaii. In his last two heats on the way to the title – he even went up against the greatest surfer of all times, Kelly Slater, in the semifinal –, Flores had to draw on some of the main lessons he acquired, believe it or not, not in the sea, but in the Jiu-Jitsu dojo.

“Never give up” is the lesson conveyed by Professor Yannick Beven, a Brazilian who teaches the gentle art and physical education in France.

“Jiu-Jitsu shows how one can turn around a match that is all but lost at any moment. That’s really important in surfing, when we’re at a disadvantage and need to be patient to wait for the right wave,” the surfer told the globoesporte.com website.

When Jeremy started practice in the gentle art he was a weakly kid who stood out in surfing. Examples of fighters who never abandon the waves are Rickson Gracie, Murilo Bustamante, and Ricardo Arona among countless others. Illustrious surfers who like putting on the gi include, besides Jeremy Flores, Kelly Slater, big-wave rider Rodrigo Resende, and Joel Tudor. Tudor, after becoming one of the greatest longboard champions around, went on to compete in Jiu-Jitsu and even participated in the ADCC.

To illustrate how the bonds between the two sports are strong, room had to be made for a dojo at one of the most talked about residences in Hawaii, the Volcom house, headquarters for some of the greatest local Hawaiian talent in Pipeline.

Our GMA in Switzerland Anderson Pereira is getting ready for the sixth Swiss International Jiu-Jitsu Cup event. The event, to be held in Geneva, is the country’s biggest competition and already has a tradition behind it in Europe.
