Held last Saturday, the latest edition of King of Mats gathered ten middleweight athletes vying for a spot in the final. After matches in the group stage and semifinal stage, Gabriel Arges and Isaque Bahiense went head to head for all the glory at Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Arena.

They both showed respect, but also plenty of will to win. Isaque got an early lead, and in the final minutes he advanced on his opponent’s legs to increase his advantage. However, in a quick play, Gabriel defended against the takedown, taking down his opponent and taking his back, winning by 6-2.

Realizado no último sábado, dia 12 de janeiro, o King of Mats trouxe dez atletas de peso médio que lutaram em busca de uma vaga na final do torneio. Depois das disputas na fase de grupos e das semifinais, Gabriel Arges e Isaque Bahiense ficaram frente a frente na finalíssima, realizada na Mubadala Arena, em Abu Dhabi.

Ambos os competidores mostraram muito respeito no duelo, mas também muito esforço para vencer. Isaque começou na frente, e nos minutos finais avançou nas pernas para aumentar o placar ao seu favor. Contudo, num lance rápido, Gabriel defendeu a queda, derrubou e pegou as costas, para fechar o duelo em 6 a 2 e o título do dia.

The final day of the 2018 World IBJJF No-Gi Championship — this Sunday — had strong emotions in store, and the public in Anaheim, Calif. was given quite a treat.

Among the standouts of the event were Gordon Ryan and Bia Mesquita, each with double gold.

To Ryan, who got a reaction from the crowd by appearing donning a red robe and a crown on Friday, the following two days served to prove his effectiveness in no-gi beyond a shadow of a doubt. In the ultra-heavy division, Ryan beat Yuri Simões in a semifinal match, later beating Roberto Cyborg for all the marbles — a fight the American was winning on points, but which ended in a disqualification, due to the force used by Cyborg when grabbing him by the neck. In the absolute, Ryan defeated two opponents before besting Patrick Gáudio in the quarterfinals, Jackson Sousa in the semis, and finally Yuri Simões.

With a sharp guard game, always seeking to place himself under his opponents and to sweep, Ryan was one step ahead in every match. In the absolute final, a sweep attempt against Simões yielded him the decisive advantage.

In the women’s section, Bia Mesquita had the perfect day. At middleweight, after beating former UFC fighter Sarah Kaufmann, Bia had a hard-fought match with Ana Carolina Vieira, whom she beat with a takedown. In the absolute division, after getting past two opponents, Bia encountered Jéssica Flowers — the super-heavy champion — in the gold decider. It was all level until the final moments, when Bia managed to advance and take the back. She didn’t place the hooks, but it was enough to give her a 1-0 lead, and that was the end of that.

O último dia do Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu Sem Kimono de 2018, realizado neste domingo, 16 de dezembro, reservou para os fãs de Jiu-Jitsu fortes emoções, e o público de Anaheim, na Califórnia, esteve inflamado para acompanhar o evento que ficará na memória.

Entre os destaques do evento, Gordon Ryan e Bia Mesquita brilharam na faixa-preta adulto, com ouros em suas respectivas categorias de peso e também na disputa do absoluto.

Para Gordon, que espantou a galera do torneio ao aparecer de capa vermelha e coroa no primeiro dia, o sábado e o domingo seguintes serviram para comprovar sua eficiência sem kimono. No pesadíssimo, Gordon bateu Yuri Simões em uma das semifinais, para em seguida superar Roberto Cyborg na finalíssima, em duelo no qual o americano vencia nos pontos mas teve o fim da disputa definida em desqualificação do brasileiro, pela pujança aplicada nas pegadas na nuca. Já no absoluto, Gordon venceu dois oponentes antes de superar Patrick Gáudio nas quartas, Jackson Sousa na semi e Yuri Simões na final pelo ouro.

Com jogo de guarda afiado, buscando sempre estar por baixo dos adversários e raspar girando, Gordon esteve um passo à frente em todas as disputas. Na final do absoluto, uma tentativa de raspagem sobre Yuri fez com que o árbitro indicasse a vantagem que valeria o ouro duplo.

No feminino, Bia Mesquita teve um dia perfeito. No peso médio, após superar a ex-atleta do UFC Sarah Kaufmann, Bia fez luta dura contra Ana Carolina Vieira, e levou a melhor ao quedar e fazer 2 a 0 nos pontos pelo topo do pódio. No peso aberto, depois de passar por duas adversárias, Bia encontrou Jéssica Flowers, campeã do superpesado, na disputa do ouro. As competidores disputaram de forma parelha até os momentos finais, até que Bia conseguiu avançar rumo à pegada de costas. A fera não colocou os ganchos, mas a vantagem de proximidade colocou 1 a 0 no placar e a garantia do ouro duplo.

Day 2 of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio had packed stands at the Arena Carioca 1 and tons of thrills on the mats as the black belt division came to play. Stars from all over the world stepped on the mats to fight for their spots in the gold medal matches. The crowd was on its feet throughout the day as the action was nonstop.

Here are the finalists for each weight class of the adult black belt division, both for men and women.

Felippe Melo vs. Carlos Alberto da Silva

Felippe Melo debuted in the division beating the reigning champion Jorge Nakamura 2-0 on advantages and then outscored Aldo Ubaldo 4-2 to reach the semifinals. The spot in the final came with a decision win over Frederico Guimarães. The other finalist, Carlos Alberto da Silva debuted with a 12-0 win over David Herrera, followed by a submission win over Robson SSoares. In the semifinal, Carlos beat Levy Ferreira 10-2.

Gabriel Batista vs. Hiago George

Batista and Hiago will reenact the the final match of the ADGS LA. Batista debuted in the bracket with a win over Jose Tiago, followed by a 2-0 win on advantages over Fernando Soares. In the semifinals, Batista faced Guilherme Carvalho and finished the match with an armbar. Hiago had his first match against Magno Vieira and won 3-0 on points. Then, Hiago went on to face Franklin Silva, finished with an armbar. In the semifinal, Hiago beat Jonas Pereira 8-0 to secure her shot at the gold medal this Sunday.

Isaque Paiva vs. João Mendes

Paiva had a long way to go until he secured his spot in the gold medal match. He first finished Richar Nogueira with a choke from the back. Then he repeated the outcome against Alessandro Costa. A 2-0 lead over Mateus Garcia granted Isaque a spot in the semifinals. He made it to the finals with a 6-4 win over Lucas Gomes. On the other side of the bracket, João Mendes debuted with a 1-0 win on advantages over Gabriel Villela. Then he beat Jean Adamy via WO and outscored Victor Moraes in the quarterfinals 2-0 on advantages. The semifinal was against Rafael Mansur, defeated by referee decision after a 2-2 tie.

Hugo Marques vs. Yan Paiva

No easy path for the finalists in the most crowded division. Hugo Marques debuted with a finish on Caio Cipriano. He then faced Luan Rodrigues, defeated with a 5-0 lead. The opponent in the quarterfinals was the always tough Jaime Canuto and Hugo managed a referee decision win after a 0-0 tie. Finally, in the semifinal, Marques beat Leandro Souza 3-2 on points. Yan Paiva also had a tough path to the final. He first beat Alexandre Cavalieri 2-0 and then beat Vitor Corte by referee decision. In the quarterfinals, Paiva beat Marlus de Souza 3-0 on advantages. The semifinal was against Bruno Tosto, beat with a 2-0 lead.

Isaque Bahiense vs. Diego Ramalho

After his title at the 2018 ADWPJJC, Bahiense wants to jump back in the season. He made it to the final with four matches on Saturday. He first finished Raimundo Italo with an armbar to face Juan Siva, who also had to tap. In the quarterfinals, Bahiense beat William Martins 5-2. The semifinal was against Matheus Souza and a 2-0 lead was enough. Diego Ramalho wants his second gold of the ADGS season and he worked hard to reach the final. He first beat Bradley Hill 4-2, then he caught Edjonson Andrade with a foot lock. In the semifinal, a toehold was the weapon of choice for Diego to beat Henrique Moreira.

Helton Silva Jr vs. Kaynan Duarte

Helton Jr had three matches on his way to the final. He first finished Allef Silva and then beat Caue Rodrigues 2-0. In the semifinal, Junior beat Anton Minenko by referees decision following a 0-0 tie. Kaynan Duarte also had three appearances on the mat. He first beat Mario Netto 4-0 on advantages and met with Rudson Mateus in the quarterfinals. A 1-0 lead on advantages was enough to put Kaynan in the semifinals against Adam Wardzinski. The spot in the final came with a 2-0 lead for a sweep.

Erberth Santos vs. Fernando Reis

The 2018 ADGS LA champion wants to keep his status. Erberth Santos first finished Gilmar Oliveira with a rear naked choke. He then beat Guilherme Cordiviola 2-0 and reached the semifinals against Igor Schneider. A 3-2 lead on advantages put Erberth in the final. Fernando Reis first beat Max Gimenes by decision, then finished Marcelo Castro and outscored Raphael Souza 3-0. In the semifinal, Reis was able to beat Ricardo Evangelista by referees decision.

Female

49kg

Mayssa Bastos vs. Rita Reis

Mayssa wants her third title in three ADGS events in the season. She fought twice on Saturday and finished both her opponents on her way to the final. She first choked Vanessa Santos from the mount and then choked Mariana Rolszt from the back in the semifinal. Rita Reis fought once to reach the final. She choked Julia Pareja from the mount.

Talita Alencar vs. Amanda Nogueira

Talita debuted against no other than Amal Anjahid. In a vey tough match, Talita beat Amal 2-0 with a sweep. She then finished Edivania Silva with a leg lock. Amanda Nogueira wants to be on top again. She also fought twice to reach the final, finishing Thaisy Buchebuam and then beating Ana Rodrigues 2-0 in the semifinals.

Bia Basilio vs. Michele Oliveira

Bia Basilio fought twice to reach the final. She finished Renata Melo and then also finished Ruthe Caen with a triangle. Michele Oliveira beat Pamela Boveda 5-0 and then Juliana Costa 2-0 on advantages.

Julia Boscher vs. Thamara Silva

Thamara Silva fought twice to reach the final. She first finished Luiza Buzele and then waged war against Samantha Cook. A 3-1 lead took Thamara to the final. Julia Bosched fought three times to reach the final. She first finished Rafaela Bertolot, then also finished Renata Moreira. In the semifinal, Boscher beat Melissa Cueto 2-0.

Gabrieli Pessanha vs. Francisca Floras

On her quest for the third title in three ADGS event in the season, Gabrieli Pessanha fought twice on Saturday to secure a spot in the final. She beat Carina Santi 4-2 and then finished Mayara Oishi with a choke from the back in the semifinal. Francisca Floras also fought twice and beat Karla Albuquerque 1-0 on advantages to meet Thais Santos in the semifinal and also win with a 1-0 lead on advantages.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Rio returns this Sunday, November 18, for the final day of matches. Last Saturday the city of New York hosted another edition of Kasai Pro Jiu-Jitsu. In its fourth spectacle, Kasai held a no-gi GP featuring eight athletes.

Augusto Tanquinho, a world champion and UFC fighter, shared the bracket with other stars of Brazilian BJJ — Paulo Miyao, Bruno Frazatto and Kim Terra — as well as the Americans Gianni Grippo, Geo Martinez, Frank Rosenthal and Ethan Crelinsten.

The finalists were known after three rounds with six-minute matches where each submission was good for three points, each win by points was good for two, and ties meant one point for each opponent. By the end of these three rounds, Gianni Grippo and Paulo Miyao had made it.

The final duel went as expected in this clash of old rivals: lots of ground action with intertwined legs and an incessant pursuit of forcing a mistake. A good chunk of the fight played out cautiously on the 50/50 guard, and one peculiar play determined the result: After reaching a score of 1–0 due to a foot attack (advantages are counted as one point each) and seeing Miyao score two points with an a reversal on the 50/50, Grippo picked up the pace and came up to add two points of his own. The maneuver was made near the edge of the mat, and Miyao spun into all fours before the interruption. The ref counted the two points, and Grippo won 3–2, as can be seen in the video below.

A famosa Manhattan, em Nova York, recebeu no último sábado, dia 10 de novembro, mais uma edição do Kasai Pro Jiu-Jitsu. Em seu quarto show, o Kasai trouxe para os fãs da arte suave um eletrizante GP sem kimono de oito atletas para disputar o título do evento.

Entre os escalados para a disputa, o campeão mundial e atleta do UFC Augusto Tanquinho integrava a chave com outros craques do Jiu-Jitsu nacional, como Paulo Miyao, Bruno Frazatto e Kim Terra, além dos americanos Gianni Grippo, Geo Martinez, Frank Rosenthal e Ethan Crelinsten.

A definição dos finalistas foi feita em três rodadas de combates, com lutas de seis minutos onde cada finalização contava três pontos, vitória por pontos no placar contavam dois pontos, e empates um ponto para cada lutador. No fim das três rodadas, Gianni Grippo e Paulo Miyao ficaram com a vaga na finalíssima.

O duelo rolou como o esperado entre os dois antigos rivais: muita disputa no solo com pernas emboladas e busca incessante pelo erro adversário. Boa parte do duelo foi estudada na guarda 50/50 e um lance curioso definiu o resultado final: depois de somar 1 a 0 no placar por um ataque no pé (as vantagens valem pontos únicos) e ver Miyao somar dois com uma inversão na 50/50, Grippo aumentou o ritmo e subiu para somar outros dois. A manobra foi feita perto do limite do tatame e Miyao girou para quatro apoios antes da interrupção. O árbitro da luta marcou os dois pontos e Grippo venceu por 3 a 2, como você pode conferir no vídeo abaixo.

After a day of lots of jiu-jitsu this Saturday, the 2018 Gracie Pro had defined its adult black-belt finalists, who will be fighting today alongside the athletes competing in superfights.

In the men’s absolute division, Rudson Mateus (Caio Terra Association) had some tough matches after having secured a spot in the heavyweight final. He will be fighting Guilherme Cordiviola (GFTeam), who beat Rafael Braga in an absolute semifinal and will face Antônio Assef (GFTeam) for ultra-heavyweight gold.

The women’s absolute final and medium heavyweight final will be one and the same, with Éricka Almeida (Gracie Barra) and Sabatha Lais (Ryan Gracie) clashing twice.

Depois de um dia recheado com muito Jiu-Jitsu, no último sábado, dia 29 de setembro, o Gracie Pro definiu seus finalistas na faixa-preta, que entram em ação neste domingo, dia 30, juntamente com os astros da divisão de superlutas. O evento será realizado no Maracanãzinho, transmitido ao vivo pelo Combate a partir das 14h.

No masculino absoluto, o craque Rudson Mateus (Caio Terra Association) fez duras lutas após garantir a final também no peso pesado. Do outro lado do peso aberto, teremos Guilherme Cordiviola (GFTeam), que bateu Rafael Braga na semifinal do absoluto e terá também no domingo o desafio de encarar Antônio Assef (GFTeam) pelo ouro no pesadíssimo.

No feminino, a final do absoluto irá remontar a final do meio-pesado, já que Éricka Almeida (Gracie Barra) e Sabatha Lais (Ryan Gracie) fazem a disputa do topo do pódio tanto no peso quanto no aberto.

Basílio attacks in the absolute final.

Fighting at the Vitória Open, held this month in Brazil, the small and energetic Bia Basílio (Almeida JJ) put on another show of technique. After taking silver at middleweight, Bia got back up and fought for gold in the absolute division. She faced Juliana Simões (Atos), and the two had a final with lots going on. To decide the fight in her favor, Bia used her pressure in the guard pass to reach side control and score three points. From there, after she reached the back, she set up her bow-and-arrow attack to secure the win. In the following video, you can watch Bia’s tight transitions until she gets her opponent to surrender.
