While in Barcelona, Spain at the Atos Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Andre Galvao received his third degree from his master, Fernando “Terere” Silva.

The GMA member living in San Diego, CA said this on his facebook page:

“Just got my 3rd degree black belt from my master Fernando “Terere” Silva. O conquered it with a lot of work and achievements in my life on and out side of the mat. Thank you sensei for everything you taught me. Such big honor! ”

Galvao began training with Terere as a purple belt in 2003. One of the first students to be part of the old TT team, Terere gave Galvao his brown belt that same year after nine months of undefeated competition. By 2005 Terere had suggested that Galvao’s first instructor promote him to black belt and in 2005 he became a black belt pan-american champion and world champion.

No último fim de semana a capital Honolulu, no Havaí, recebeu mais uma seletiva para o WPJJC de Abu Dhabi, e o campeão foi um surfista veterano que tirou onda.

O ginásio McKinley High School recebeu mais de cem competidores, de olho nos pacotes para viajar com tudo pago para os Emirados, para o torneio principal em abril. O destaque na categoria marrom e preta foi o professor Bruno Ewald (Longman Jiu-Jitsu) que venceu a categoria acima de 92kg e o absoluto. Bruno ainda viu seu filho, o jovem faixa-roxa Hunter Ewald, vencer a categoria médio até 80kg.

Após pendurar as duas medalhas de ouro no pescoço, Bruno, que é filho do economista brasileiro Luis Carlos Ewald, comentou o que espera apresentar em Abu Dhabi.

“Sei que a competição principal vai ser mais dura, mas vou chegar na minha melhor forma para enfrentar essa nova geração. Gostei muito de lutar essa seletiva, o que mais me motivou para esse campeonato foi a chance de poder dar um bom exemplo para o meu filho e meus alunos, e poder mostrar a essência do verdadeiro Jiu-Jitsu, usar a técnica contra a força e me testar na categoria adulto”, conclui o professor de 40 anos, que é faixa-preta de Royler Gracie.

Last weekend in Honolulu, Hawaii, another leg of the Abu Dhabi WPJJC Trials went down, and the winner was a veteran surfer who put on a show.

McKinley High School gymnasium hosted over a hundred competitors, all eyeing all-expenses-paid trips to compete in the United Arab Emirates at the main event in April. The standout in the brown/black belt division was Professor Bruno Ewald (Longman Jiu-Jitsu), who won the over-92kg division and the absolute. Bruno also got to see his son, the young purple belt Hunter Ewald, win the under-80 kg division.

After winning two gold medals, Bruno, who is the son of Brazilian economist Luis Carlos Ewald, commented on his hopes in Abu Dhabi.

“I know the main tournament is going to be tougher, but I’m going to show up in my best shape to take on the new generation. I really liked competing at the trials. What motivated me most for this championship was the chance to set an example for my son and students, and to show Jiu-Jitsu’s true essence, using technique against force to test myself in the adult division,” said the 40-year-old Royler Gracie black belt in closing.

Claudio Ribeiro is Brazilian but lives in Hawaii, on the island of Kauai, where he trains with black belt Bruno “Longman” Ewald. “But we also train a lot at home. I often roll with my son Rayom in the backyard. We thought the ‘Home-Jitsu’ article was cool, since it shows the gentle art’s hardcore! Aloha!”

Luiz Aguiar, better known as Murf, is another who trains at home. Thanks to his doing so, his sister took up training too and both got “Jiu-Jitsu” tattoos, so great is their passion for the sport. “I started training in 2001 and it was a passion. I had to drop out because of work but I always put on the gi. It’s an impossible feeling to describe. My sister discovered her passion for Jiu-Jitsu too. She even met her boyfriend in training! We’re always looking to learn, and with a mat at home, there’s no fixed time for doing so! A month ago my cousin started too. The family in Jiu is growing!” he recounts.

Leandro Abrahão was a Roberto Tozi student in Campinas and on weekends he’d roll at home to brush up on his technique and interact with the gang. “Now I work in São Paulo, I’m a Roberto Godói brown belt. We sometimes even meet up on weekends to roll in my garage at home.”

Alexandre Maron is also from São Paulo, and he trains at Alliance with Fabio Gurgel. “On Saturdays we train on the terrace of my apartment with Professor Eduardo Mirando and also with Antonio Peinado.”

João Vinícius is from Pau dos Ferros, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte. “I’m a blue belt student of Bruno Ramos in Natal, the Nine Nine teacher here. We’ve trained in my living room at home, soon after that we moved on to a friend and student named Clístenes’s house, forging along with ‘Home-Jitsu’!”

Jean Feijó is from the Gracie Floripa branch in the Southern Brazilian city of Blumenau. “We too practice ‘Home-Jitsu’ here on the mat set up at Marcelo’s house. The gang is hooked on Jiu-Jitsu and, whenever possible, we get together for a little extra training. The good thing about having a mat at home is that when there’s training going on and you feel that urge to roll we can work on new positions. Including the ones from GRACIEMAG!”

Students of Master Welton Ribeiro, who has trained standout athletes like Thales Leites amd others, also get together to practice “Home-Jitsu.” On Saturdays and holidays they get together to train at the house of architect Leonardo Cupolillo (Tio Léo) in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro state. “The dojo is known to the gang as “tatame da Bariri.” Training there serves to clear up questions, as well as being a lot of fun,” says Marcelo Azevedo.

Ela até conheceu o namorado nos treinos! Sempre buscamos aprender e, com o tatame em casa, não tem horário para isso! Faz um mês que uma prima nossa começou também. A família no Jiu está crescendo!”, conta.

Leandro Abrahão era aluno do Roberto Tozi, em Campinas, e nos finais de semana fazia um rola em casa para apurar as técnicas e interagir com a galera. “Hoje trabalho em São Paulo, sou faixa-marrom do Roberto Godói. Em alguns finais de semana ainda nos encontramos pra fazer um rola na garagem de casa.”

A galera é viciada em Jiu-Jitsu  e, sempre que possível, nos juntamos pra fazer um treino a mais. O bom de ter tatame em casa é que, quando não tem treino e dá aquela vontade de fazer um rola, a agente aproveita e já vai vendo as posições novas. Inclusive, as da GRACIEMAG!”.

Alunos do Mestre Welton Ribeiro, que e já treinou grandes atletas do cenário atual das artes marciais como Thales Leites, entre outros, também se reúnem para praticar o “Casa-Jitsu”. Na casa do arquiteto Leonardo Cupolillo (Tio Léo), em Niterói (RJ), os rolas acontecem aos sábados e feriados. “O dojô é conhecido pela galera como tatame da Bariri. Os treinos fazem com que possamos tirar dúvidas, além de ser muito divertido”, conta Marcelo Azevedo.

Cyborg in paradise

Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu, our GMA in Florida, was the main standout at September 4’s Honolulu Open in Hawaii. In those parts, the black belt had some of the greatest experiences of his life, as he himself reports in the text that follows:

“It all started with the dream of an uncle of mine named Lauro Schuback Pastor Almeida, a real character, a surfer in love with Hawaii! My uncle always dreamed of living a surfer’s life, and that he did to a tee, just as my life is Jiu-Jitsu.

“My uncle spent a few days in Hawaii and ended up meeting some beasts from Kauai like Bruno Ewald Longman and his students. Among there were several big names of surfing. Through this contact, I called Bruno, a Gracie Humaitá black belt. I shot the breeze with him and set it up to go to the Honolulu Open.

“Once I go there, what a trip! Bruno is some kind of “mayor” of Kauai. Father to Hunter and Reef, two really tough kids, there’s even a day for him on the island. He has really great energy, as does everybody in his academy. In just one week I made friends for life. It felt like I’d known that crew for years.

Tin Tin, Hawaiian monster!

“From the first day on, I was treated like one of them and became part of the group. Bruno introduced me to Tin Tin, a way tough Hawaiian. The guy weighs 135 kg, burly, but his heart’s big as the whole world, really kind.

“Tin Tin took me to get to know the island. Those were for sure some of the best days of my life. I came from the South Matogrosso wetlands. I lived my entire life in nature, but for sure, I left a piece of me on that island, between the turquoise blue ocean, the mountains, pristine paradisiacal beaches, fish of all sizes and colors. I swam with turtles, sharks; I climbed mountains; I swam under waterfalls… What a fantastic place! Hawaii’s nature is magical and breathtaking!

“Besides that, I was surprised by the Jiu-Jitsu there. The guy is first-rate, really sharp on the ground. I was happy with the training, one of the factors that led to my taking the championship without a glitch. Not just Bruno, but all the students have really strong Jiu-Jitsu.

“From white to black belt, the guys hold their own. Bruno has been heading this project for twenty years and has a number of good fighters on the island. We went to the event on Saturday, I sported the Longman BJ gi to compete and it was awesome competing alongside the gang from Kauai.

“The event was great, as were the local fighters, who displayed excellent technique. I had a few tough matches, had one at weight and two in the absolute. And the absolute final was really good against Abmar Barbosa, who’s been on a roll in Jiu-Jitsu. I pulled off a good performance.

“Winning weight and open weight in Hawaii was glorious! I made a number of contacts, everyone has really great energy over there and I intend to visit the gang as often as possible. I want to get to know the other islands on the archipelago, too. I’m already looking into my return to do some seminars.

“After the event, I even went around with Matheus Vulkan and Rodrigo Clark to go around Oahu, the Mecca of surfing, where Waimea Bay, Pipeline and Sunset are, as well as to swim with the sharks in the bluest ocean in the world!

“Surely, God made Hawaii on the seventh day! Pythagoras said: ‘It’s by traveling that we find pieces of ourselves around the world.’ Well, I found a piece of myself in that paradise!

“Best wishes to all and aloha!”

Cyborg no paraíso

Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu, nosso GMA na Flórida, foi o principal destaque no Honolulu Open, evento que agitou o Havaí no dia 4 de setembro. Por lá, o faixa-preta viveu algumas das melhores experiências da vida, o que o próprio relata no texto a seguir:

“Tudo começou com um tio meu chamado Lauro Schuback Pastor Almeida, um figuraça, surfista apaixonado pelo Havaí! O sonho do meu tio sempre  foi viver para o surfe, e isso ele faz ao pé da letra, assim como minha vida é o Jiu-Jitsu.”

“O tiozão foi passar uns dias no Havaí e acabou conhecendo todas as feras do Kauai como o Bruno Ewald Longman e seus alunos. Dentre eles, vários grandes nomes do surf. Através desse contato, liguei para o Bruno, faixa-preta da Gracie Humaitá. Troquei uma ideia com ele e marquei de ir ao Honolulu Open.”

“Chegando lá, que viagem! O Bruno é uma espécie de “prefeito” do Kauai. Pai do Hunter e do Reef, dois moleques muito casca-grossa, tem até um dia nomeado a ele na ilha. Ele tem uma energia muito boa, assim como todos que fazem parte da academia. Em apenas uma semana, fiz amizades para a vida. Parecia que eu conhecia aquela galera há anos.”

Tin Tin, hawaiian monster!

“Desde o primeiro dia, fui tratado como um deles e me enturmei com a galera. O Bruno me apresentou ao Tin Tin, um havaiano casca-grossíssima. O cara pesa uns 135kg, sinistro, mas tem um coração do tamanho do mundo, muito gentil.”

“Tin Tin me levou pra conhecer a ilha. Foram, com certeza, alguns dos melhores dias da minha vida. Eu vim do Pantanal Sul-Matogrossense. Vivi minha vida inteira meio à natureza, mas, com certeza, eu tinha um pedaço meu perdido naquela ilha, entre o mar azul turquesa, montanhas, praias paradisíacas completamente virgens, peixes de todos os tamanhos e mais belas cores. Nadei com tartarugas, tubarões; escalei montanhas; mergulhei em cachoeiras… Que lugar fantástico! A natureza no Havaí é mágica e de tirar o fôlego!”

“Além disso, fiquei surpreendido com o Jiu-Jitsu. A galera é nota 10, com o chão muito afiado. Fiquei feliz com o treino, um dos fatores que me fez tirar o campeonato de letra. Não apenas o Bruno, mas todos os seus alunos têm o Jiu-Jitsu muito forte.”

“Da faixa-branca a preta, a galera faz frente. O Bruno comanda esse trabalho lá há 20 anos e tem vários bons lutadores na ilha. Fomos para o evento no sábado, botei o kimono do Longman BJJ pra lutar e foi muito bacana competir meio à galera do Kauai.”

“O evento foi bom, além dos lutadores locais, que mostraram ótima técnica. Tive algumas lutas duras, fiz uma no peso e duas no absoluto. Inclusive, a final no absoluto foi muito boa, contra o Abmar Barbosa, atleta que tá mandando muito no Jiu-JItsu. Consegui fazer uma boa apresentação.”

“Campeão peso e Absoluto no Havaí foi a glória! Fiz vários contatos, todo mundo tem uma energia muito boa lá e pretendo visitar essa galera o máximo de vezes possível. Quero conhecer as outras ilhas do arquipélago também. Já estou viabilizando a minha volta para uns seminários.”

“Depois do evento, ainda saí com o Matheus da Vulkan e o Rodrigo Clark para dar uma volta em Oahu, a meca do surfe, onde fica Waimea Bay, Pipeline, Sunset, além de nadar com tubarões no mar mais azul do mundo!”

“Com certeza, Deus fez o Havaí no sétimo dia! Pitágoras já dizia: ‘É viajando que encontramos pedaços de nós mesmos espalhados pelo mundo’. Bom, achei um pedaço meu naquele paraíso!”

Roberto Abreu, otherwise known at “Cyborg”, had a riveting bout with Rolles Gracie in one of the Grapplers Quest superfights that shook things up at the UFC Fan Expo this Saturday. Now Cyborg is packing his bags to head to the Honolulu Open, for which sign-ups end today (sign up here). Beyond that, the fighter is also getting ready to face off against stalwart competitor João Assis. Check out what he had to say to GRACIEMAG.com.

What did you think about the Rolles match?

It went as expected. Rolles is certainly a great player. I felt that he is strong, and due to the weight difference, I was unable to submit him. I prepared for the match well and everything went according to plan. I went all out for ten minutes, with two takedowns, I swept, passed guard and had several finishing opportunities. I also escaped a kneebar that was all the way in! That’s how it went; I’m so happy to have been able to show off my Jiu-Jitsu.

Was it cool competing at the UFC Fan Expo, was it different?

The event was first rate, very organized, an unparalleled showcase for grappling. Grapplers Quest just gets better and better. This fusion with the UFC is of great value to Jiu-Jitsu.

You tend to do well without the gi. What’s your secret?

I feel it’s natural. I train a lot without the gi and the two complement each other. I love the gi, but it’s harder to hold me down without it. This year my goal is to win the No-Gi Worlds.

What events are coming up, when do you fight next?

Now I’m going to concentrate for the next one. Today I’m in Dallas. I’m going to roll with Tony Tipton and the gang at Genesis BJJ. Then I’m going to Hawaii, where I’ll be in the Honolulu Open at the weekend. I’m going to relax in Hawaii and visit Bruno Longman. I want to learn more about the Hawaiian tough-guy culture! Then on the 25^th I’m going to be in Grapplers Quest again, in Las Vegas, fighting for the title against João Assis. João has big wins over Jeff Monson and Xande Ribeiro. I’m sure it will be a great fight!

O que achou da luta contra o Rolles?

A luta foi como esperado. O Rolles, com certeza, é um grande lutador. Senti ele forte e, pela diferença de peso, não consegui finalizar. Me preparei bem para a luta e saiu tudo como planejado. Caí pra dentro nos dez minutos, com duas quedas, raspei, passei a guarda e tive várias oportunidades de finalização. Também escapei de uma leglock no pau!  É isso, estou muito feliz por ter conseguido mostrar meu Jiu-Jitsu.

Foi bacana lutar na UFC Fan Expo, foi diferente?

O evento foi de primeira, muito organizado, uma vitrine sem igual para o grappling. O Grapplers Quest vem cada vez mais se superando. Essa junção com o UFC traz muito valor ao Jiu-Jitsu.

Você costuma se apresentar bem com e sem kimono. Qual o segredo?

Acho que é natural. Treino muito com ou sem kimono e os dois se completam. Amo o pano, mas sem ele fica mais difícil de me segurarem. Esse ano a meta é vencer no Mundial Sem kimono.

Como segue agora nos eventos, luta quando?

Agora é concentrar para lutar de novo. Estou hoje em Dallas, vou fazer um treininho com o Tony Tipton e a galera da Genesis BJJ. Depois vou para o Havaí, onde luto o Honolulu Open, neste fim de semana. Estou indo pra relaxar no Havaí e visitar o Bruno Longman.  Quero conhecer um pouco da cultura dos casca-grossa havaianos! Além disso, no dia 25 luto de novo o Grapplers Quest, em Las Vegas, pelo título de melhor do ano contra o João Assis. O João vem de grandes vitórias sobre o Jeff Monson e Xande Ribeiro. Tenho certeza que vamos fazer uma grande luta!

E o trabalho em Miami, segue firme?

Estamos com um time muito forte e vamos chegar com força para tomar o show na Califa (Mundial)! Chequem tudo sobre o Camp e minhas academias na Flórida no site www.cyborgbjj.com .

A IBJJF prorrogou o prazo de inscrições para o Honolulu Open. A data final era neste sábado, mas foi estendida até o dia 31 de agosto, próxima terça-feira (inscreva-se aqui).

O evento, que acontece no dia 4 de setembro, no ginásio da Henry J. Kaiser High School, marca a volta de grandes competições da IBJJF ao Havaí. Os faixas-pretas Bruno Frazatto, Jonatas Tagarela, Bruno Bastos, Laércio Fernandes e Aldo Caveirinha, entre outros, disseram que estarão dentro do Honolulu Open. Entre as equipes, times tradicionais do arquipélago havaiano como Gracie Barra, Relson Gracie, Nova União, Brazilian Freestyle, Grappling Unlimited, Gracie Technics, Gracie Humaitá, Maui Jiu-Jitsu, Longman JJ, Mad Tiger JJ e Gracie Jiu Jitsu North Shore, entre tantas outras, também devem estar dentro.

Outro ponto alto é a homenagem a BJ Penn, Egan Inoue, Renato Charuto, Luis Limão, Kai Garcia e Bruno Longman, que receberão o diploma de faixa-preta da IBJJF.

This coming September 4 the Honolulu International Open will mark the return of major competitions to Hawaii. But what’s more, the IBJJF is preparing a special tribute to the six resident black belts on the archipelago, among them BJ Penn.

“We’re going to present black belt diplomas to BJ Penn, Egan Inoue, Renato Charuto, Luis Limão, Kai Garcia and Bruno Longman. We’re contacting them all. The event will be really cool and there’s only a week left to sign up,” recounts André Fernandes.

On August 28 the honored BJ will see action at UFC 118 in Boston, when he attempts to take back the organization’s lightweight belt against Frankie Edgar. BJ remembers his days participating in IBJJF competitions, which he considers an important step in his success as a fighter.

“I never took it seriously, but I started to change my way of thinking before the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship finals. I was in the final and remember thinking: ‘I’ll never be in this position again. So get out there and do the possible and impossible to win.’ And that’s why I think today I’m good under pressure,” remembers BJ on the UFC website.
