Stormy Paxton’s journey to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was anything but conventional. Before stepping onto the mats, she had built a respected career as a government marine ornithologist, earning publication credits for her work on pelagic ichthyoplankton. Her life revolved around science, research, and data, until Jiu-Jitsu entered the picture and changed everything.

What began as a physical challenge quickly evolved into a profound personal transformation. Through Jiu-Jitsu, Paxton discovered resilience, confidence, and a sense of liberation she had not experienced elsewhere. The impact was so powerful that she made a bold decision: to leave her scientific career behind and fully dedicate herself to the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Today, Stormy Paxton trains and works under Professor Fabio Villela in Austin, Texas. Professor Villela is the owner of Gracie Barra Cedar Park, Gracie Barra Round Rock, and Gracie Barra Georgetown. Under the mentorship of Professor Fábio “Gigantinho,” Stormy played a key role in building and expanding the women’s Jiu-Jitsu programs across all three academies. Her efforts helped create structured, welcoming environments where women could train with confidence, purpose, and consistent support.

The programs Stormy helped develop go far beyond technical instruction. Many women arrive on the mats carrying emotional – and sometimes physical – trauma. Through Jiu-Jitsu, Stormy guides them toward reclaiming ownership of their bodies, establishing healthy boundaries, and rediscovering strength through challenge. On the mats, adversity becomes a powerful tool for healing, empowerment, and personal freedom.

Stormy leads by example. She competes not only for personal achievement, but to inspire the students she coaches, specially women and children. Her competitive résumé is impressive: ranked #1 overall No-Gi blue belt in the world, ranked #1 in her division in the gi at purple belt, and a highly decorated purple belt competitor. Her titles include Pan American No-Gi Champion, Pan American Gi Champion, and World Champion. Following her world championship performance, Stormy was awarded her brown belt under Professor Fabio Villela, a milestone that reflected not only competitive success, but leadership and character on the mats.

Despite her accolades, Stormy Paxton’s true focus remains impact. Through consistency, discipline, and mentorship, she demonstrates what is possible when perseverance meets purpose. In a sport known for its difficulty, Stormy is building something lasting: stronger women, resilient communities, and living proof that transformation is earned one roll at a time.

My name is André Silva, 38 years old. I have had a Gracie Barra unit in the neighborhood of São Francisco – Niterói for 6 years. I have always been an athlete, but insulin intolerance (metabolic disease) made me lose autonomy over my body and almost led to my death. Even though I’m overweight, I’ve always maintained my Jiu Jitsu training routine at my gym.

I weighed more than 200 kg due to complications from insulin intolerance. This disease also caused pre-diabetes, gastric reflux, sleep apnea, fatty liver, among other health risks. 1 year and 8 years ago I needed bariatric surgery as a last resort. According to the medical team, after the surgery, discipline and a strictly healthy lifestyle routine would be necessary to try to return to fighting at high performance. After 1 month of surgery I put on my gi and was able to train for 30 minutes. The body was adapting. In 12 months, 60 kg was lost and I was discharged earlier than expected due to post-operative care, appropriate diet, physical rehabilitation work and Jiu Jitsu training.

In 2022 the opportunity arose to go to the United States and be a Jiu Jitsu athlete, an audacious project by Professor Fábio Gigantinho Villela at Gracie Barra Cedar Park. Even after invasive surgery and 38 years, I accepted the challenge, gave up a public job and embarked on my dream. Live fully for Jiu Jitsu.

In 3 months I competed in Austin Compnet (gold superfight), Dallas Open (silver Gi, Gold and Bronze category and absolute No Gi – Superheavyweight) and Texas Compnet (gold super heavyweight category). Total of 5 medals!

We remain firm to achieve more victories in the master category 2. Professor Fábio Gigantinho has done specific work to improve my performance in the master category where the fights are shorter and any mistake can cost the victory.

Faixa preta 1º grau do mestre Carlos Gracie Jr. Andre mudou-se para os Estados Unidos em 2019 em busca de seu sonho de competir em alto nível e compartilhar seu amor pelo Jiu-Jitsu com os alunos da Gracie Barra.

Originalmente de São Paulo, ele se mudou para Austin, no Texas, para continuar vivendo como atleta. O professor Fabio Villela “ Gigantinho” então lhe concedeu essa oportunidade na Gracie Barra Cedar Park, em Round Rock e, mais recentemente, na GB Georgetown Texas. No Brasil, Andre Sena sempre foi apaixonado por compartilhar os benefícios do Jiu-Jitsu com a comunidade e levou essa paixão continente acima.

No pouco tempo que ensina no Texas, ele se tornou um dos pilares da comunidade de Austin, ao trabalhar incansavelmente para usar o Jiu-Jitsu como uma ferramenta para melhorar e capacitar as pessoas. Este ano, ele foi comissionado como almirante honorário da Marinha do Texas pelo governador Greg Abbott, em reconhecimento a sua dedicação ao Texas por meio de suas realizações, serviço e sacrifício.

Competidor assíduo, o atleta Andre Sena esteve particularmente envolvido ativamente no ensino de treinamento de combate para a polícia local, bem como para o Exército dos EUA em Fort Hood, criando currículos exclusivos e personalizados para cada segmento das Forças Armadas do país.

Ele também esteve diligentemente envolvido na organização de programas para vítimas de violência doméstica, não apenas ensinando-as a se defender, mas também construindo sua confiança e ajudando-as a perceber seu valor próprio como pessoa. Puro Jiu-Jitsu.

Lucas Pinheiro adjusts the choke. bjjmentality

The first competition of the year was a golden one for Lucas Pinheiro. With two fights and two submissions, the Manaus native became a four-time champion of the IBJJF’s Austin International Open, whose 2019 edition was held last weekend at the Round Rock Sports Center in Texas.

For this tourney, the roosterweight needed to move up in weight division, as there were no opponents signed up in his. Now the Atos fighter plans to fight two more Opens before the Pan, which is slated to take place in March in California.

“I had to move up to featherweight and felt the weight difference a bit,” he said. “My opponents were much heavier and stronger, but I felt really good in the competition and everything worked out in the end.”

In the final, against Brandon Walker, Lucas worked until achieving control from the top while Brandon played half-guard. With lots of pressure, Lucas managed to get his leg out, pass the lapel and choke at the very end, securing the title.

A primeira competição do ano foi dourada para Lucas Pinheiro. Com duas lutas e duas finalizações, o manauara faturou o tetracampeonato do Austin International Open de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF, realizado no último final de semana no Round Rock Sports Center, em Austin, no Texas.

Para esta competição, o peso-galo precisou subir de categoria, já que não tinham oponentes inscritos em seu peso. Agora, o faixa-preta da Atos Jiu-Jitsu planeja disputar mais dois abertos antes do Pan-Americano, que acontece em março, na Califórnia.

“Infelizmente não tinha ninguém na minha categoria”, disse Lucas.  “Eu tive que subir para o peso-pena e senti um pouco a diferença no peso. Meus adversários eram bem mais pesados e mais fortes, mas eu me senti muito bem na competição e deu tudo certo no final.”

Na disputa pelo ouro, contra Brandon Walker, Lucas trabalhou até o domínio por cima, enquanto Brandon fazia meia-guarda. Com muita pressão aplicada, Lucas conseguiu escapar a perna, passar a lapela e estrangular no finzinho da luta, para garantir o título.

Alexandro sinks the golden ezequiel.

Held last weekend, the IBJJF’s Austin Winter Open had in veteran fighter Alexandro Ceconi one of its standouts. Even though he qualifies to fight among masters, Alexandro chose to take part in the adults’ age group and walked away with two gold medals.

Besides the absolute title, which he won by beating lightweight champion Thiago Macedo (Rodrigo Pinheiro), Alexandro won the super-heavyweight title over  Charles Mcguire (ATT) with a powerful play.

Alexandro charged and, upon being pulled, advanced straight for the choke using the lapel. He didn’t finish right there, but went to the back and set up the ezequiel attack. With patience and continuous pressure, Alexandro gradually squeezed until forcing the tap-out.

Realizado no último final de semana, o Austin Winter Open da IBJJF teve como um dos destaques o faixa-preta veterano Alexandro Ceconi. Mesmo com bagagem suficiente para brilhar na divisão master, Ceconi se jogou no adulto e mordeu dois ouros.

Além do título absoluto, conquistado ao vencer o campeão peso leve Thiago Macedo (Rodrigo Pinheiro),  Ceconi havia vencido, minutos antes, o atleta Charles Mcguire (ATT) na final do superpesado, em um lance potente de finalização.

Ceconi partiu para cima e ao ser puxado avançou direto para o estrangulamento usando a lapela. A fera não finalizou, mas foi para as costas e armou o ataque derradeiro no ezequiel. Sem desespero e com pressão contínua, Ceconi apertou o adversário gradativamente até conseguir os três tapinhas.

Quando o adversário por baixo gosta de aprontar da meia-guarda, por vezes nos vemos em apuros. Mas para resolver este problema, nós de GRACIEMAG pedimos socorro ao faixa-preta 5° grau Itácio Lisboa, da nossa GMI Gracie Barra Natal.

Experiente professor e pioneiro da GB no Rio Grande do Norte, Itácio mostrou uma de suas opções para superar a meia-guarda, mas não com passagem, e sim finalizando por cima. Na técnica, o professor usa a lapela do adversário para fazer sua pegada, antes de trocar a base e jogar o corpo para o lado oposto da meia. Em seguida, Itácio sobe e faz postura, e com a lapela dominada faz a segunda pegada para finalizar no estrangulamento.

Current and six-time light featherweight champion of the world Leticia Ribeiro is already back at work after last weekend’s successful venture at the 2011 Worlds. Now her objectives as a competitor have been met, she returns to her day job of teaching, sharing her know-how with female practitioners in Austin, Texas.

Any ladies lucky enough to be in the Austin area can head to Relson Gracie’s academy on 2919 Manchaca Street this Sunday, June 12, between 12 and 3 pm for the seminar. Leticia is also available for private lessons in the morning and in the afternoon following the group class.

After a perfect UFC debut, getting the submission of the night bonus against Darren Elkins, Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira will have another stiff test to contend with. On the coming 15^th in Austin, Texas, the Jiu-Jitsu brown belt will defend his unbeaten record against Efrain Escudero at UFC 22, a challenge the fighter has already commented on here on GRACIEMAG.com (see here).

This Monday, Charles embarks for Texas.

“In these days leading up to the fight I’ll wrap up my training with Macaco (Jorge Patino) at the academy in Texas. I trained hard with my family here at Bronx’s Gold Team,” recounts the young talent, who also had special help in muay thai to brush up on his striking.

“Cosmo Alexandre helped me a lot and now it’s time to go to war,” says Bronx in finishing.
