With a flawless run, he made his way to the open class semifinal against Lucas Leite.

The best of 2015

Bernardo Faria, Dominyka Obelenyte, Felipe Pena and Mackenzie Dern finished the year of 2015 as the standouts of the competition circuit.

Faria and Obelenyte shined at the 2015 Worlds with double-gold campaign after strong performances that allowed little chance for their opponents in each of their matches.

Pena and Mackenzie were the main names at the 2015 Worlds No-Gi when they won the black belt open class with dominant showings.

So, we sked ourselves what our readers can learn from such successful competitors. What were their secrets to beat their opponents and celebrate their titles in 2015? Here is what we found out.

Mackenzie Dern

Mackenzie was one of the most active competitors in the black belt division in 2015. He was present in all major events, Gi and No-Gi, throughout the year. Despite the busy routine, she was able to keep a high-level performance and achieve great results, including her first ADCC gold medal and also the open class division at the Worlds No-Gi. She told GRCIEMAG what her secret was: “To compete trains your mind and your body. I think that’s why I am able to control my adrenaline so well at major tournaments. I have gone through the process so many times; the weight cut, the anticipation, testing myself against so many different people. In the end, I just love to compete and it will be hard for me to stop anytime soon!”

With seven submissions in eight matches, Felipe pena was on fire at the 2015 Worlds No-Gi. He also made all the way to the final at the 99kg division of the ADCC, losing in a tough match to Rodolfo Vieira. Pena also talked to GRACIEMAG about the ways he is able to achieve great results. It has a lot to do with not settling with what is confortable and accepting new challenges. “I didn’t like to train no-gi at all. When I won the Brazilian trials for the 2015 ADCC, I was forced to dive into no-gi Jiu-Jitsu and my game started to change. With the gi, I depend a lot on the grips. Nowadays, I can honestly say I like to train no-gi as much as I like to train with the kimono.”

The Lithuanian 19-year-old shocked the Jiu-Jitsu world with a virtually flawless performance at the sports biggest stage last June, at the 2015 Worlds. Dominyka became the youngest black belt, male or female, to with the open class division and she thinks that the key was to have a very balanced game and just hanging on to it. “I think the golden rule of Jiu-Jitsu is not to have the most muscles, the most developed berimbolo, the strictest diet, or the best cardio, but to just persevere until things get easier. As I have said before, there were many times when I was younger when I wanted to quit. When this sport just seemed so overwhelming and made me feel like an abnormal kid and teenager, but pushing through that pain and every tough situation I encountered along the way just made me stronger.”

Bernardo’s moment finally came in 2015. With four gold medals in the two most important events of the year, Pan and Worlds, he wrote his name in Jiu-Jitsu’s history. Many times said to have a one-dimension game that relies too much on the half guard, Bernardo proved without any shadow of a doubt that his game is more than qualified to make him one of the greatest of all times. Here’s the lesson he left us all: “I would advise him to keep an open mind and try to learn it all. Even if you don’t use that position too much at the competitions, it’s useful to know it so you can defend it well. So, my advise is to try to learn as much as you can, but be smart about it and find out which ones work for you and which ones don’t.”

There were a lot of thrills before the finals this past Sunday at the 2015 Worlds No-Gi.

The 2015 Worlds No-Gi also had a lot of great matches and thrilling outcomes in the master division.

Athletes over the 30 years old mark gave all they got to win the desired gold medals this weekend.

In the master 1 black belt division, GMA member and leader of Ocean County BJJ, in New Jersey, Tom DeBlass came back from a 2nd place in his weight division to win the open class without allowing a single point to be scored against him in four matches.

The master 1 black belt had some very well known names making the top of their divisions, like Milton Bastos (light-feather), Ed Ramos (light), Marcus Antelante (middle), Alan Nascimento (medium-heavy), Bruno Bastos (ultra-heavy).

The master 2 black belt division saw Eduardo Telles repeat DeBlass and come back after a 2nd place in his weight division to win the open class. Telles, a 2013 medium-heavyweight world champion in the adult division, beat John Piper in the absolute final.

Scherner at the master 3 open class podium

The master 3 black belt division saw a double gold champion in Fabiano Scherner, who won the ultra-heavy division and the open class. The absolute final put Scherner against no other than Roberto Godoi.

In the master 4 black belt division Robert Martinez also came back from a 2nd place in his weight division to win the open class in great fashion.

The master 5 black belt division saw Eugenio Estrada win double gold in the heavyweight and the open class.

Finally, in the master 6 division, Stephen Kamphuis also won double gold in the superheavy division and the open class.

Alan Nascimento’s life came dangerously close to be changed forever on June 1, 2014.

When Otavio Sousa swept him in the middleweight semifinal of the world championship, he hit his head on the mat.

After he tapped to an armbar, he could not get back on his feet.

He explains what happened at that moment: “I had a neck injury and a nerve got pinched, which made me lose the feeling both on my arms and legs.”

He left the Long Beach Pyramid in a stretcher and spent the next days in a hospital bed.

The injury was so important that five months later Finfou was still experiencing some symptoms: “They’re not as bad as before. I feel much better now. I have almost no pain and don’t have to take pills. I still feel tired from time to time,” explained Alan on November 2014.

Gradually, he went back to teaching classes, then doing some physical conditioning and, later on, some actual training.

The comeback to competition happened on April 2015, at the Rome Open.

Even so, one thing was still missing and it was to go back to the very place he got hurt, the Long Beach Pyramid.

That he did this weekend, at the 2015 Worlds No-Gi, as Finfou registered to compete in the master 1 medium-heavy division.

The outcome could not have been better, as Finfou himself tells us: “Last time I Competed at this arena, I left the place paralyzed from my neck down and went straight to the hospital in an ambulance. Today, I was back here again and I walked out of the building as a world champion. Praise the Lord!”

Caio Terra

Caio Terra awed the crowd at the roosterweight final of the 2015 Worlds No-Gi. He finished Yusuke Honma with a baratoplata to win his 8th gold medal since 2008. GRACIEMAG was able to capture the entire sequence. With the help of Caio himself, here are the details of the technique.

Caio revealed that the set up he used in the final was not his favorite: “The one I did in the semifinal [against Jorge Santistevan] was much more beautiful, but I could not get the finish, so I changed to an armbar. I taught that same technique two weeks before the championship, so when it happened during the match, I knew I could not lose it otherwise my students would say it doesn’t work,” reveals Caio.

Another chapter of the history of the World No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu championship was written this Sunday, Nov.8.

Felipe Pena and Mackenzie Dern ended the weekend with the most valuable prizes, the black belt open class gold medals.

Pena did even better and also won the heavyweight division.

In the male open class final, Pena and Matheus Diniz gave the crowd what they wanted, in ten minutes of great thrills.

Diniz was the only one of Pena’s opponents who did not tap to one of his attacks either to their feet, knees, arms or necks.

Felipe won seven out of his eight matches during the weekend by submission.

Diniz did his best to avoid the tap, but could not defend the ten points Felipe scored throughout the match.

The absolute final ended with Felipe on Diniz’ back, but unable to finish with a rear naked choke.

“The funny thing is that up until recently, I did not like to compete in no-gi. I had to change my game completely to make it work without the grips,” said Felipe about his success without the kimono.

In the female open class final, Mackenzie Dern gave Andresa Correa no time to put her game plan to work.

The featherweight launched a barrage of attacks on the foot and arms, but eventually caught the opponent in a tight guillotine to earn her first IBJJF open class title in a world championship.

“Most of the time, if I am attacking my opponents, it means they are not attacking me, so that’s what I try to do all the time,” explained Mackenzie.

In the weight divisions, results were the following in the order they happened.

Patricia Santos caught Chelsea Donner with a rear naked choke to become the light-feather champion.

Tammi Musumeci swept once and then got tto full mount to with the featherweight final against Mackenzie Dern. Tammi added the second title to her World No-Gi black belt record.

Karen Antunes caught Kiri Liao in a tight guillotine to become the lightweight champion.

Angelica Galvão defended two dangerous armlock attacks to beat Amanda Loewen 2-1 on advantages and win the gold medal in the middleweight division.

Andresa Correa caught Leanna Dittrich with a quick leg lock to win the medium-heavy division.

Caio Terra needed only 50 seconds to finish Yusuke Honma with a modified omoplata lock in the roosterweight final and win his eighth Worlds No-Gi title since 2008.

Felipe Pena caught Jackson Sousa with a foot lock at the very end of the match to win the heavyweight division.

João Miyao won his second gold medal in a row at the Worlds No-Gi after he beat Samir Chantre 8-6 in the light-featherweight final.

Augusto Tanquinho and Osvaldo Queixinho closed out the featherweight division. Tanquinho took the gold medal home.

Michael Langhi struck gold in his first appearance at the Worlds No-Gi after a 2-0 win over Mansher Khera in the lightweight final.

DJ Jackson conquered his second gold medal at the black belt division of the Worlds No-Gi when he beat Jonathan Satava 3-0 with a guard pass in the middleweight final.

Lucas Barbosa managed a takedown early in the match to beat Thiago Sá 2-0 in the medium-heavyweight final.

João Assis won his third title at the Worlds No-Gi with a 4-0 win over Roberto Alencar in the superheavy final.

Gabriel Lucas beat Mahamed Aly 2-1 on advantages to add the ultra-heavy title to his 2015 title. Here’s a photo gallery of the weight class finals.

Felipe Pena

The tradition will be kept and once again the 2015 Worlds No-Gi will crown two first-time adult black belt open class champions this Sunday.

Felipe Pena and Matheus Diniz will fight for the gold medal in the male division while Mackenzie Dern and Andresa Correa will battle for the top of the podium in the female bracket.

All four finalists more than deserved to get the shot at the ultimate glory.

Male Open Class

Felipe Pena fought 5 times this Saturday and finished all his opponents, four in the open class and one in the heavyweight division.

In the absolute, he first caught Wilson Reis with a guillotine, then he stretched the arm of Patrick Gaudi.

The opponent on the quarterfinals was Arnaldo Maidana, beat with a foot lock.

The semifinal put Felipe face to face with DJ Jackson, who had beat Eliot Kelly, Guybson Sá and Caio Terra on his way to the match that was worth a spot in the final.

Pena didn’t waste too much time playing DJ’s favorite stand up style, and soon pulled guard.

After some scramble, Pena was able to catch DJ’s back and finish with a rear naked choke.

Felipe Diniz

On the other side of the bracket, Matheus Diniz was also brilliant from beginning to end.

First he choked Nicholas Liaskos from the back, then he beat the always dangerous Garry Tonon by points.

The quarterfinal match was against Steven Patterson, also caught win a RNC.

Mahamed Aly would be Diniz’ opponent in the semifinal.

The newest black belt on Team Lloyd Irvin was also brilliant in his open class campaign, having defeated Gabriel Kitober with a kimura lock, Charles Negromonte with a leg lock and finally Jackson Sousa by referee decision after a hail Mary sweep that tied the match.

Unfortunately for Mahamed, he would taste his own poison against Diniz.

Ahead 2-0 in the scoreboard after a takedown, Aly allowed Diniz to hold him from behind an ended on the ground, where Matheus quickly took his back and got the choke in place to get the tap with 8s to go on the clock.

It was the most thrilling moment of the day.

Female Open Class

Mackenzie Dern keeps her impressive record this year.

In two matches in the open class division, she caught Josephine Masiello’s arm and then twisted Emile Maxine’s foot to reach the final.

With last year’s absolute champion Gabi Garcia on the stands, Alliance’s Andresa XCorrea also fought twice to be in the final.

First she beat Amanda Loewen and then caught Tammi Musumeci with a leg lock.

Worlds No-Gi at the Pyramid tomorrow

The 2015 Worlds No-Gi is almost ready to go.

The IBJJF has released the brackets and the order of fighter for the weekend in Long Beach.

With the brackets drawn, we can indulge in one of our favorite things, which is to try to predict who’s going to be in the final match of each weight class of the black belt division.

MALE

ROOSTER – Caio Terra vs. Washington Lima

Terra is a clear favorite to win his eighth title in the event. On the other side of the bracket, it’s going to be a fierce battle for a spot in the final.

LIGHT-FEATHER – João Miyao vs. Samir Chantre

There’s already a good rivalry going on between Miyao and Samir. If everything goes according to recent events, they should meet in the final once again.

FEATHER –  Gianni Grippo vs. Paulo Miyao

First of all, let’s just say it’s going to be an awesome bracket. There so many great names here, we can only expect great things. On one side, you have Gianni, Vitor Paschoal, Isaque Paiva and Tanquinho. Gianni’s routine of competition could give him an edge against his opponents. On the other side, Paulo Miyao will have a lot of trouble to beat tough people like Baret Yoshida, Kim Terra, Osvaldo Moizinho, among others.

LIGHT – Garry Tonon vs. Gabriel Rollo

GARRY TONON

Another packed division that should offer great thrills for the crowd. As early as the quarterfinals, you could have matches like Garry Tonon vs. Michael Langhi. With so many tough names, it’s hard to pick the finalists, but we did it anyway.

MIDDLE – Marcelo Mafra vs. Otavio Sousa

Great thrills in this one too. On one side, last year’s champion Marcelo Mafra will have to defend his crown against new talents like Jonathan Satava. On the other side, Otavio Sousa will probably meet former champion DJ Jackson in a thrilling semifinal for the other spot in the gold medal decider.

MEDIUM-HEAVY – Josh Hinger vs. Matheus Diniz

Josh Hinger has already proved what he can do in a no-gi competition. Matheus Diniz will be hungry to repeat his recent performance at the Pan No-Gi/

HEAVY – Jackson Sousa vs. Felipe Pena

Felipe Pena had an impressive performance at the 2015 ADCC, where he was stopped only by Rodolfo Vieira. On the other side of the bracket, Jackson Sousa is the favorite to be in the final. Tim Spriggs is out due to a rotator cuff injury.

SUPER-HEAVY – João Assis vs. Roberto Alencar

2014 champion João Assis will do his best to defend his title. Lucas Rocha and James Puopolo on his side of the bracket and Roberto Alencar, Eliot Kelly and Guybson Sá on the opther side will the biggest obstacles in João’s way.

ULTRA-HEAVY –  Roberto Cyborg vs. Jared Dopp

What a great battle will be if Cyborg and newcomer Mahamed Aly meet in the semifinal. On the other side, Jared Dopp should also have tough matches against Gustavo Elias and Gabriel Lucas.

FEMALE

MACKENZIE DERN

The division should have great finals like Mackenzie Dern vs. Tammi Musumeci (Feather).

Today, Nov. 3, is registration check day for the 2015 Worlds No-Gi.

As we countdown for this year’s event, scheduled Nov. 7-8, in Long Beach, we go back to one of the greatest of all times as he shares his views on the importance of no-gi training.

Xande Ribeiro is one of the two black belts to have won the open class division both at the Gi and No-Gi Worlds (the other one is Buchecha).

When asked why he trains no-gi and what he has gained from doing it, Xande went back to his beginnings in the gentle art.

“My history in no-gi starts at the times of the Taparia, the open-hand MMA sessions common in Brazil. We didn’t have no-gi classes back then. You’d only find no-gi classes at the Luta Livre (Brazilian wrestling) academies. Later on, with the increasing popularity of the ADCC and other submission events, the no-gi culture started to grow within the Jiu-Jitsu community.”

Xande goes on to say in what way training without the kimono helped him: ” It has helped me in two main aspects of my game – position and precision. Sometimes, the use of the kimono might hide some elements of the technique and you can use your grip a lot as a helping tool. When I started training no-gi, my pressure and precision with the gi on reached another level. Whenever I train no-gi, I think that if I had the gi I could pass or sweep. With time, I got more precise and learn how to position myself better. My pressure on the opponent got better as well.”

The 2015 World No-Gi Ji-Jitsu championship reached full capacity at the very end of the registration period.

The deadline was Oct. 29, and 1,600 athletes confirmed presence at the Long Beach pyramid, next weekend.

Some big names are in, which increases the chances of big thrills at this year’s Worlds No-Gi.

Surprisingly, some names we would expect to be in the list, are not, like Yuri Simões, Keenan Cornelius, Lucas Leite, AJ Agazarm.

In the black belt division, many 2014 champions will be back to defend their titles.

Caio Terra will be after his eighth gold medal overall and his fourth in the roosterweight division. If last year he had to fight only once, this year he’ll have to face a full bracket with standouts like Leandro Escobar, Felipe Costa and Yusuke Honma.

Light-featherweight

JOÃO MIYAO

João Miyao is another 2014 champion back to defend his title. Samir Chantre, Rafael Freitas, Thomas Lisboa João Pedro Somália will be some of the toughest obstacles on the way of the champion.

Featherweight

GIANNI GRIPPO

Last year’s champion, Samir Chantre, registered in the light-featherweight, but can still change divisions on check day (11/03). Anyway, Gianni Grippo, Vitor Paschoal, Kim Terra, Osvaldo Moizinho and Paulo Miyao are the usual suspects in the division. Veteran Barret Yoshida and always tough Augusto Tanquinho are also in the mix and have all the tools to make it to the top.

Lightweight 

GARRY TONON

AJ Agazarm, champion in 2014, is not on the list, but Michael Langhi, Garry Tonon, Rodrigo Freitas, Mansher Khera, Francisco Iturralde, among others, are confirmed. It’s another division set to thrill the crowd.

Middleweight

MARCELO MAFRA

Reigning champion Marcelo Mafra is back to defend his crown. It’s not going to be a easy task, as he has the company of Otavio Sousa, DJ Jackson, Jonathan Satava, Josh Hinger among other tough guys.

Medium-heavy

Matheus Diniz

Keenan Cornelius, winner in 2014, is not on the list. It’s safe to say the division is wide open, and Matheus Diniz, Thiago Sá, Arnaldo Maidana, Inacio Neto, among others, will go at it for the gold medal.

Heavyweight 

TIM SPRIGGS

Not very populated, the division will be short but intense. Lucas Leite, the 2014 champion, is not on the list. Felipe Pena, Tim Spriggs, Roberto Torralbas and Felipe Bueno are guarantees of great action.

Super-heavy

JOÃO ASSIS

João Assis is back to defend his 2014 title. He’ll have to outgrapple tough guys like Lucas Rocha, James Puopolo Guybson Sá, Roberto Camargo and others.

Ultra-heavy

GABRIEL LUCAS

Yuri Simões, ultra-heavy and open class champion in 2014, is not on the list due to neck injury sustained at the 2015 ADCC. Roberto Cyborg, Gabriel Lucas, Bruno Bastos and newcomers to the black belt division Jared Dopp and Mahamed Aly will shake the ground of the pyramid looking for the gold medal.

MACKENZIE DERN

With 16 athletes registered, the female black belt division features some great duels. Tammi Musumeci and Mackenzie Dern in the featherweight division. Angelica Galvão and Amanda Loewen in the middleweight. The open class should gather the most important names for big thrills.
