SAN JOSE, CA — The Jiu-Jitsu community recently came together to celebrate three decades of the US Open, an event promoted by the BJJ Tour league and spearheaded by renowned GMI Professor Claudio França. The milestone tournament took place November 15–16.

Over the years, the competition has undergone a remarkable evolution. What began as a local gathering, primarily featuring academies from the American West Coast, has blossomed into an internationally acclaimed event, drawing athletes of diverse nationalities for both Gi and No-Gi divisions.

The 30th annual event, held in San Jose, California, was a resounding success, boasting over 2,000 registered competitors. This turnout solidly validates Professor França’s initial vision and the BJJ Tour’s unwavering dedication to promoting the sport. Days after the show-stopping event concluded, GRACIEMAG caught up with França. The coral belt offered a brief analysis of the core elements that made this landmark edition so special.

Tradition and a family affair
“One of the key pillars of this event is its three-decade tradition,” França noted. “The 30th edition was a true celebration of that long history, which has roots dating back to the very beginning of Jiu-Jitsu here in the USA.” The tournament also distinguishes itself with a unique ‘family’ atmosphere, highlighted by the presence of athletes and professors who have been involved with the competition for nearly 30 years, demonstrating a strong connection and loyalty to the event.

The next generation and elite level competition
The competition reinforced its crucial role in shaping the next generation of BJJ talent. “The kids’ divisions, for instance, were a major highlight,” França enthused. “We had almost 800 boys and girls competing with an incredibly high technical level. Furthermore, the level of the black belt matches is continually rising across all categories, which speaks volumes about the sport’s ongoing evolution.”

Global reach confirmed
The international nature of the US Open was once again proven during this edition. The event successfully attracted athletes and academies from all corners of the globe, solidifying the tournament’s history as a global showcase for BJJ. “That diversity is a testament to the event’s ability to transcend borders and unite the global community of the sport,” França concluded.

“Um dos pilares do evento é a sua tradição de três décadas. A 30ª edição foi uma celebração dessa longa história, que tem raízes no início do Jiu-Jitsu nos EUA. GRACIEMAG: Quando um evento completa 30 anos, torna-se uma data perfeita para celebrar, e também para um balanço de todas as conquistas. Neste aniversário, que desejo você tem para o US Open? O que ainda faltaria conquistar?

CLAUDIO FRANÇA: Eu desejo um pouco mais de visibilidade fora do meio do Jiu-Jitsu, para que o torneio pudesse dar ainda mais retorno para todos que participam dele, dos atletas aos patrocinadores. As mídias e veículos voltados para as artes marciais contribuem, mas o espaço para os campeonatos e para os astros do Jiu-Jitsu nos grandes canais convencionais ainda é escasso, quase nulo. A luta nas próximas décadas será esta, ver nossas disputas de Jiu-Jitsu ao vivo em canais como a ESPN, a Fox Sports e outras grandes emissoras. Isso seria um passo decisivo para atrair parcerias e patrocinadores fortes, e poder distribuir prêmios merecidos e substanciais para os competidores e competidoras da faixa-preta.

Em 1995, você organizou o primeiro campeonato na Califórnia, em Santa Cruz, e não deve ter sido fácil. O que mais parece ter mudado de lá para cá no ambiente dos campeonatos?

Quando organizei o primeiro US Open eu estava havia menos de dois anos nos EUA. Arrumar tatames de Jiu-Jitsu já era difícil, o que dirá negociar parcerias e contratar equipamentos básicos para um campeonato. O que lembro hoje é de como os treinadores e líderes de equipe eram bem mais nervosos com os árbitros.

Como o US Open ajudou no fortalecimento do Jiu-Jitsu no norte da Califórnia e no país em geral?

Creio que o grande papel das primeiras edições do US Open foi o de mostrar aos alunos e para a comunidade as diferenças essenciais do Jiu-Jitsu esportivo e do MMA, modalidade que se tornava muito popular nos Estados Unidos, com o UFC. Os jovens perceberam que podiam treinar Jiu-Jitsu por 1001 razões, e não com o intuito de subir no Octagon para lutar sem luvas. E assim preconceitos foram caindo e a vida de muitas famílias foram tocadas. Era uma fase em que só havia campeonatos no Brasil, e desde o começo conseguimos atrair lutadores de muitos países, e ajudar no fortalecimento e divulgação da nossa arte marcial nos Estados Unidos. Houve então esse papel educativo muito forte.

Quando você decidiu organizar seus primeiros torneios, no Rio, os campeonatos eram raríssimos. Um lutador que perdia tinha de esperar um ano por uma revanche. Hoje há eventos a cada fim de semana, em dezenas de cidades do planeta. Há algum lado prejudicial em termos tantas competições?

O esporte ganha popularidade a cada campeonato, isso é um senhor benefício. O lado nocivo é quando o campeonato não cuida da arbitragem, da segurança dos atletas, e isso pode passar uma impressão errada para os participantes. O que também não vejo com bons olhos é quando cada evento se sente no direito de ir alterando as regras e pontos do Jiu-Jitsu. O esporte tem regras conhecidas. É preciso seguir os regulamentos regidos e consolidados pela nossa Federação Internacional. Isso confunde a cabeça dos atletas e dos fãs, e atrapalha o crescimento do esporte nas grandes mídias. Imagine se no tênis a cada torneio houvesse uma pontuação diferente? Seria confuso. Isso é bem prejudicial para o futuro do esporte.

Ainda curte viajar para prestigiar outros campeonatos, para ver como são organizados?

Hoje sou faixa-coral, mas desde minha juventude sempre lutei e disputei muitos campeonatos. Esse sempre foi o meu maior prazer. Depois, passei a curtir levar os meus alunos e incentivar o Jiu-Jitsu no Brasil, nos EUA ou onde fossse. Foi isso que me trouxe até aqui. É sempre um prazer apoiar e aprender com outros organizadores.

Seus eventos sediaram lutas de diversos astros e estrelas americanas, revelaram jovens como Kron Gracie e até o empresário Mark Zuckerberg. Já aprendeu alguma técnica numa luta realizada no US Open?

Quando a gente veste a camisa de organizador, é raro a gente ter atenção total nas lutas, a ponto de perceber os detalhes técnicos. Mas sempre, sempre aprendi muito ali no melhor lugar da arena, ali no centro das áreas de luta, ou como instrutor à beira dos tatames. Semanas depois dos meus eventos, acabo analisando o jogo e o estilo das grandes feras.

Como era o Claudio França aluno, pequeno ali nos tatames do grande mestre Francisco Mansor?

Comecei me divertindo, aprendendo desde cedo com outras crianças, nas turminhas do mestre Mansor. Quando me tornei atleta e professor, passei a absorver muita coisa do mestre, que é aquele grande contador de histórias, uma página viva do Jiu-Jitsu. Quando ele abriu a Kioto BJJ em Nova York, eu fazia questão de ir lá ouvir aquelas histórias deliciosas. A gente saía para jantar e eu aprendia muito, sobre o passado dele como polícia e as aulas que ele tinha com grande mestre Helio Gracie. Outro lado dele menos conhecido é o religioso. Ele sempre me ajudou a encontrar esse tipo de paz também. Hoje ele mora em São Paulo, o carinho e o amor continuam o mesmo, mas bate a maior saudade.

On the weekend of November 15th and 16th, William Overfelt High School in San Jose, California, prepares to welcome a diverse group of dedicated masters and students. The American school will host the US Open, which began in 1995 and this year marks its 30th edition.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coral belt and founder of the event, Claudio França, spoke with GRACIEMAG about the tournament’s results so far and what he hopes for the future of the sport.

GRACIEMAG: When an event turns 30, it’s the perfect time to celebrate and also to take stock of all its achievements. On this anniversary, what wish do you have for the US Open? What remains to be achieved?

CLAUDIO FRANÇA: I wish for a little more visibility outside of Jiu-Jitsu circles, so that the tournament could provide even more returns for everyone who participates, from athletes to sponsors. Martial arts-focused media contribute, but the coverage for championships and Jiu-Jitsu stars on major conventional channels is still scarce, almost non-existent. The struggle in the coming decades will be to see our Jiu-Jitsu competitions live on channels like ESPN, Fox Sports, and other major broadcasters. This would be a decisive step toward attracting strong partnerships and sponsors, and being able to distribute well-deserved and substantial prizes to black belt competitors.

In 1995, you organized the first championship in California, in Santa Cruz, and it must have been difficult. What else seems to have changed in the championship environment since then?

When I organized the first US Open, I had been in the US for less than two years. Setting up Jiu-Jitsu mats was already difficult, let alone negotiating partnerships and purchasing basic equipment for a championship. What I remember today is how coaches and team leaders were much more nervous around referees.

How did the US Open help strengthen Jiu-Jitsu in Northern California and the country in general?

I believe the key role of the first editions of the US Open was to show students and the community the essential differences between sport Jiu-Jitsu and MMA, a sport that was becoming very popular in the United States with the UFC. Young people realized they could train Jiu-Jitsu for a thousand reasons, not just to step into the Octagon and fight bare-knuckle. And so, prejudices began to fall away, and the lives of many families were touched. It was a time when championships were only held in Brazil, and from the beginning, we were able to attract fighters from many countries and help strengthen and promote our martial art in the United States. So, we played a very strong educational role.

When you decided to organize your first tournaments in Rio, championships were extremely rare. A losing fighter had to wait a year for a rematch. Today, there are events every weekend, in dozens of cities around the world. Is there any downside to having so many competitions?

The sport gains popularity with each championship; that’s a huge benefit. The downside is when the championship doesn’t take care of the refereeing or the safety of the athletes, and this can give the wrong impression to the participants. What I also don’t like is when each event feels entitled to change the rules and points of Jiu-Jitsu. The sport has well-known rules. You must follow the regulations governed and consolidated by our International Federation. This confuses the minds of athletes and fans, and hinders the growth of the sport in mainstream media. Imagine if in tennis, each tournament had different scoring? It would be confusing. This is very detrimental to the future of the sport.

Do you still enjoy traveling to other championships to see how they’re organized?

Today I’m a coral belt, but since my youth, I’ve always fought and competed in many championships. That’s always been my greatest pleasure. Later, I began to enjoy taking my students and promoting Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, the US, or wherever. That’s what brought me here. It’s always a pleasure to support and learn from other organizers.

Your events have hosted fights by several American stars, emerging young talents like Kron Gracie and even businessman Mark Zuckerberg. Have you ever learned a technique in a fight at the US Open?

When we wear the organizer’s hat, it’s rare to pay full attention to the fights, to the point of noticing the technical details. But I’ve always, always learned a lot right there in the best spot in the arena, right there in the center of the fighting areas, or as an instructor on the edge of the mats. Weeks after my events, I end up analyzing the game and style of the greats.

What was Claudio França like as a student, small and young, there on the mats of the great master Francisco Mansor?

I started having fun, learning from an early age with other children, in Master Mansor’s little groups. When I became an athlete and teacher, I began to absorb a lot from the master, who is that great storyteller, a living page of Jiu-Jitsu. When he opened Kioto BJJ in New York, I made a point of going there to hear those delightful stories. We’d go out to dinner, and I learned a lot, about his past as a police officer and the classes he took with the great master Helio Gracie. Another lesser-known side of him is his religious side. He always helped me find that kind of peace as well. Today he lives in São Paulo; the affection and love remain the same, but I miss him deeply.

In an insightful conversation with Professor Claudio França, the leader of BJJ Tour, which has organized the US Open for 29 years, we delve into the history of this pioneering event. A trailblazer in producing BJJ competitions in the United States, França reflects on the event’s journey, the valuable lessons he’s learned, and the exciting developments coming up for the November edition, set to take place at Independence High School in San Jose, California.

This year marks the 29th anniversary of the traditional US Open by BJJ Tour. What memories from this long journey stand out to you?
CLAUDIO FRANÇA: Absolutely, there are many memories! The first edition was very special, considering all the challenges at the time. Jiu-Jitsu was just starting out, and organizing an event for a sport that no one knew about was tough. It was the first BJJ championship in the United States; we were the first organization to hold events here. Over the years, it’s been amazing to see BJJ grow alongside the US Open in size and significance. Our first event had 150 competitors, with nearly all the American academies of that time participating. Now, we have around 1,500 competitors. Another memorable year was 2013, when we opened the competition to children aged 4 to 15. Until then, the US Open was only for adults, mainly because BJJ hadn’t yet gained popularity among kids.

What highlights can we expect for this year’s edition, scheduled for November 16-17?
This year, we’re gearing up for an event with 2,000 competitors. We have new sponsors who will help elevate the level of BJJ. We’ll be live-streaming the event, showcasing the top matches, and, of course, featuring the competition among academies for the prestigious title of champion of the 29th US Open. The black belt division will also be a standout moment. Saturday, the first day of competition, will be dedicated solely to children. We’re looking at a fantastic event with nearly 1,000 kids competing; they are the future of our sport.

Can you share some lessons you’ve learned over these 29 years leading the US Open?
I’ve learned a lot about organizing events over these three decades in the U.S., but it all started back in 1989 with the Copa Atântico Sul, in Rio de Janeiro. I learned how to engage with instructors and competitors, how to attract sponsors and investors, and especially about the logistics of organizing an event—remembering that our first US Open was done without a single computer. Today, that would be unimaginable. A significant step was introducing online registration. Before, registrations were sent by mail or people would come in person to sign up, which was quite complicated. That was a game changer!

Who are some of the standout fighters who have impressed you in the combat areas of the US Open?
We’ve had many; it’s hard to name just a few because there have been so many amazing matches! I remember big names like BJ Penn, Nick Diaz, Kron Gracie… All these stars competing as blue belts, taking their first steps toward stardom at the US Open back in the ’90s. We also had renowned black belts like Fabrício Werdum, Corleta, Carlos Machado, Tarsis, Tanquinho, Formiga, Queixinho, and many others from different generations competing on the mats of the US Open.

Looking ahead, where do you see the event in ten years? What are the main challenges and goals moving forward?
Our future plans are ambitious. We want to attract sponsors from outside the BJJ market, such as Apple, Toyota, Bank of America, etc. We’re aiming for big brands and investors who can take the sport to a professional level, with significant prize money for athletes and academies. We’re also working to bring in mainstream media, like ESPN and FOX, not just outlets focused on fights.

Over the past few years, we’ve noticed your daughter has been actively involved in organizing and promoting the event. That’s fantastic! Can you talk a bit about your family’s involvement in BJJ Tour tournaments? Is this a perfect example of the motto “Jiu-Jitsu is family”?
BJJ and family have always gone hand in hand. My children, Tylor and Mariana, started in BJJ practically from the day they were born. They’ve continued training as they grew up, living the life of my academies and competitions. They grew up competing in events and over time began helping me organize the show. They’ve worked in every position we have for the event, starting with athlete check-ins, handing out shirts, scorekeeping, and then mat coordinating, etc. They know all the logistics of the events, and now at 22 and 19, they are essential to our organization. It’s a great pride and pleasure for me to work with them—two very smart and motivated young people who are committed to taking BJJ to the next level, and I love them dearly.

Este ano o tradicional US Open da liga BJJ Tour completa 29 anos. Quais são as lembranças dessa longa trajetória que mais emocionam você?
CLAUDIO FRANÇA: Com certeza muitas lembranças! A primeira edição foi muito especial, tendo em vista todas as dificuldades da época. O Jiu-Jitsu estava bem no início, é difícil fazer um evento de um esporte que ninguém conhece. Foi o primeiro campeonato de BJJ nos Estados Unidos, fomos a primeira organização a fazer eventos aqui. No passar dos anos foi especial ver o BJJ crescer junto com o US Open em tamanho e importância. Nosso primeiro evento teve 150 competidores, praticamente todas as academias americanas da época vieram para o torneio. Atualmente nossos eventos têm por volta de 1.500 competidores. Em 2013 também foi especial, o primeiro ano que abrimos o campeonato para crianças, de 4 a 15 anos. Até então o US Open era organizado só para adultos, muito porque o BJJ ainda não havia se tornado popular entre as crianças.

Quais são os destaques previstos para a edição deste ano, marcada para os dias 16 e 17 de novembro?
Para este ano estamos nos preparando para um evento com 2.000 competidores. Temos novos patrocinadores, que estarão ajudando a elevar o nível do BJJ. Faremos transmissão ao vivo do evento com as principais lutas e, claro, a competição entre as academias para ganhar o renomado título de campeão da vigésima nona edição do US Open entre equipes. A disputa entre faixas-pretas também será um momento marcante do evento. O sábado, primeiro dia da competição, será só para as crianças. Teremos uma grande festa com quase 1000 crianças competindo, elas são o futuro do nosso esporte.

Fale um pouco sobre as lições que você aprendeu nesses 29 anos à frente do US Open.
Aprendi muito sobre organizar eventos nessas três décadas de Estados Unidos, mas tudo começou em 1989 com a Copa Atlântico Sul, na maneira de lidar com os professores e competidores, como trazer patrocínio e investidores para o evento e principalmente na logística da organização, lembrando que o primeiro US Open fizemos sem usar um computador sequer. Hoje isso seria impossível. Um passo muito importante foi introduzir as inscrições on-line. Antes as inscrições eram enviadas pelo correio ou as pessoas vinham pessoalmente se inscrever, era muito complicado, realmente foi o pulo do gato!

Quem são os craques que mais impressionaram você nas áreas de combate do US Open?
Tivemos muitos. Fica difícil falar, foram lutas maravilhosas… Lembro de grandes nomes como BJ Penn, Nick Dias, Kron Gracie… Todas essas feras competindo de faixa-azul e começando a dar os primeiros passos para o estrelato a partir do US Open, ainda nos anos 90. Também tivemos renomados faixas-pretas, como Fabrício Werdum, Corleta, Carlos Machado, Tarsis, Tanquinho, Formiga, Queixinho, e muitos outros, de diferentes gerações, competindo nos tatames do US Open.

E o futuro? Em que patamar vai estar o evento daqui a dez edições? Quais são os principais desafios e objetivos pela frente?
O plano para o futuro é ambicioso. Queremos trazer patrocínio de fora do mercado do BJJ, como Apple, Toyota, Bank of America etc. Grandes marcas e investidores, que possam levar o esporte ao profissionalismo, com boas premiações para os atletas e academias, premiação em dinheiro. Também trabalhamos para trazer a mídia geral, ESPN, FOX…, não só a mídia voltada para as lutas.

Ao longo dos últimos anos percebemos que a sua filha vem participando bastante da organização e promoção do evento. Muito bacana! Fale um pouco sobre esse envolvimento da sua família nos torneios da BJJ Tour. Mais uma prova de que o lema “Jiu-Jitsu é família” se aplica com perfeição?
BJJ e família sempre andaram juntos. Meus filhos Tylor e Mariana começaram no BJJ praticamente no dia que nasceram. Continuaram a treinar durante o crescimento, vivendo a vida das minhas academias e campeonatos. Cresceram competindo nos eventos e com o passar do tempo começaram a me ajudar na organização do show. Já trabalharam em todas as posições que temos no evento. Começaram fazendo check in de atletas, entrega de camisas, foram score keep, depois mat coordinate etc. Por isso conhecem toda a logística dos eventos, e hoje com 22 e 19 anos são pessoas essenciais para a nossa organização, sendo um grande orgulho e prazer para mim trabalhar com eles, dois jovens muito inteligentes e motivados para levar o BJJ para o próximo nível e que eu amo muito.

Em ação pela divisão faixa-preta até 94.5kg, a fera venceu dois duelos para sagrar-se campeão. Em sua primeira balhata, contra Manny Rocha, Rice conseguiu emplacar uma volumosa vitória de 40 pontos, com inúmeras passagens de guarda, raspagens e pegadas de costas e joelhos na barriga.

Day 2 of the XIX US Open, in Santa Cruz, California, saw local talent Nathan Mendelsohn claim the adult black belt open class division.

Nathan had two matches to reach the gold medal.

First he outscored Joe Scovel 16-0 with sweeps and guard passes.

The final was against the ultraheavy Wauriman Borges and after a 2-2 tie in points the referee decided that Mendelsohn would take first place.

Nathan talked about the strategy to win: “I played on top to make him tired and pulled guard only in the end. I noticed in his previous fights that he would most likely pass guard if the opponent pulled too soon. ”

In the other black belt divisions, results were:

Rahlan Gracie def. Nathan Mendelsohn 2-0 for the mediumheavy gold.

Diego Bispo was the lightweight champion after a 6-2 win over Israel Ceron.

Carlos Melo was the ultraheavy champion after a 3-0 win over Wauriman Borges.

Victor Paschoal won the featherweight division after a referee decision win over Davin Maxwell.

The XIX US Open had its first day this Saturday in Santa Cruz, California.

One of the most traditional events in the gentle art calendar, the US Open gathered over 600 athletes on day 1 alone.

Kids were the protagonists for the first half of the day, with fierce disputes in age divisions that ranged from ages 4 to 15 years old.

Later on, adults entered the mats with the blue belt and brown belt divisions.

Adam Dunkel was the standout with the brown belt open class title.

The US Open returns this Sunday, Oct. 26, with the black belt divisions.
