O evento trazia a final do reality show “The Ultimate Fighter Brasil”, transmitido semanalmente na TV aberta e acompanhado pelo povão. Os lutadores Rony Jason, Cezar Mutante, Serginho Moraes, Tiago Bodão, Hugo Wolverine, Daniel Sarafian e Francisco Massaranduba caíram no gosto popular.

Rodrigo Minotauro prepara o armlock no UFC Rio 3.

Henderson ainda defendeu o suado título contra Nate Diaz no UFC on Fox 5, solidificando seu posto.

Fedor Emelianenko.
Adeus a Fedor

Do Svidaniya, Camarada Emelianenko.

Feliz 2013

The post Retrospectiva 2012: os grandes lances do MMA nacional no ano que passou first appeared on Graciemag.

At UFC 143, Fabrício Werdum caught those who thought his punches and kicks weren’t up to snuff by surprise. Facing Roy Nelson, who has knocked out his fair share of stalwart opponents, the Jiu-Jitsu black belt showed he knows his business on his feet, which ultimately earned him the unanimous decision win and the “Fight of the Night” bonus, to boot.

Werdum explains the reason his standup game was flowing so smoothly, and you’d better believe it, the gentle art played a key role in that happening.

“Watch how on-guard Overeem is even as a Thai boxing specialist; he’s afraid to end up on bottom. To me it doesn’t matter. If in trading blows I end up on bottom, I’ll be right at home.”

The heavyweight made his UFC return on the right foot and says he’s back to make things hard on the top talent in the division. His Thai boxing, from training with aces like Rafael Cordeiro and André Dida, is in fine form. But he never neglects his grappling.

“When I hit the ground with Nelson, I quickly made it to his back. So my Jiu-Jitsu was sharp for that fight,” he told GRACIEMAG.com.

“We have good guys in every field for our training camp. João Assis and Lucas Leite are really backing me up in Jiu-Jitsu. We have a great physical conditioning coach as well; he’s a former American football player and a black belt.”

Now check out some of the Jiu-Jitsu and MMA techniques that put Werdum at the top of the fight world:

O João Assis e o Lucas Leite estão me dando muita força no Jiu-Jitsu.

3. Fórmula do sucesso como lutador

4. Energia e gás no Jiu-Jitsu

“Adoro nadar, para ganhar fôlego.”

6. Fora do octagon, paz e sorrisos

“Não me estresso.

E enfim, a controvérsia.

Comente abaixo.
The post Jon Jones deixa 6 lições e 1 controvérsia em passagem pelo Brasil first appeared on Graciemag.

Jon “The Man” Jones got himself a special in the upcoming issue of GRACIEMAG, where the strengths (copious) and weaknesses (few) of the light heavyweight champion of the UFC are broken down and laid out. Be sure to get your hands on it as soon as it hits a bookstore near you, and to make sure you don’t miss any special reports in the future, subscribe here.

Voted the GRACIEMAG man of the year in MMA of 2011, Jones abounds with lessons. During a lively trip to Rio for the UFC 142 weekend, Jon Jones was interviewed by Brazilian journalist Ary Cunha for the Sunday edition of “O Globo” newspaper, and he also provided one good piece of controversy with Jiu-Jitsu as a theme.

1. LESSON OF LONE LOSS

“I messed up there [disquualification loss to Matt Hamill in 2009]. It was the wrong move at the wrong time; I made a mistake. But rather than getting intimidated and stop using elbows, I improved the technique. I don’t make that mistake anymore, and now elbows are my number-one weapon.”

2. TAKE MORE RISKS

“I always try getting the finish when I fights, using different moves, preferably the riskier ones. I know that putting on a good show for the crowd is just as important as winning.”

3. FORMULA FOR SUCCESS AS FIGHTER

“Passion. Being passionate about what you do (…) You have to struggle to be the best every day.”

4. ENERGY AND GAS IN JIU-JITSU

“I love swimming, to improve my wind.”

5. TOUGHEST WIN IN UFC

“It was against André Gusmão [UFC debut, in August 2008; he won by unanimous decision]. (…) I didn’t have a strategy, my technique wasn’t clean, I didn’t think much during the fight. Now I know what’s going on; I know how to read my opponent, read their body language, which I didn’t know how to do before.”

6. OUTSIDE OCTAGON: PEACE AND SMILES

“I don’t get stressed. There are people starving, living with war, disease. I have no reason to complain, to suffer from little things. I can’t cry; I have to smile, because my worst day is a good day.”

7. “WRESTLING IS A POWERFUL WEAPON AND CANCELS OUT JIU-JITSU”

“And last but not least: the controversy. Jones, who has been wrestling since he was 14 years old, is quoted by “O Globo” as saying, “Wrestling is a powerful weapon and cancels out Jiu-Jitsu. Good wrestlers know how to avoid getting pinned. I’ve never been pinned and never been taken down…”

Jones’s opinion deserves the utmost respect, of course. There’s no lack of wrestlers who have trained hard and managed to get around Jiu-Jitsu. Could be, though, that you, dear reader, might agree that this video here weakens the champion’s case just a bit:

What do you think, dear reader, is Jones six times right and one time wrong? Comment below.
The post Jon Jones leaves 6 lessons and 1 controversy on trip to Brazil first appeared on Graciemag.

Current Jiu-Jitsu world champion of the lightweight division Gilbert Durinho (Atos Jiu-Jitsu)

was one of the stars at Vitor Belfort’s successful Las Vegas training camp for his showdown with the oversized opponent, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, at UFC 142.

Durinho, who’ll be making his professional MMA debut against José Salgado, on the coming 28th in Utah, shared with GRACIEMAG.com what he learned at the camp, amid aces like UFC champions GSP and Dominick Cruz.

“At Vitor’s training camp I was both a Jiu-Jitsu coach and an apprentice at the same time, and I learned all kinds of stuff. There was one week in particular that was just off the hook, when Dominick Cruz, Georges Saint-Pierre, Phil Davis, King Mo, Nate Marquardt and Brendan Schaub showed up. I picked up a bit of experience from each of those aces.”

1. FREER FLOWING JIU-JITSU

“Since I’m just starting in MMA, these six months were all about learning. Standing, for example, I took boxing lessons with plenty of support from Gabriel Oliveira and Gil Martinez. In Thai boxing, Ray Sefo trained me and corrected me on a number of things. In other words, besides the fighters’ experience I made the most of the coaches’ knowledge to develop as an MMA fighter. And on top of that I did physical conditioning with Alvaro Romano, of Ginástica Natural, which always helps get my ground game flowing better.”

2. CRUZ, JIU-JITSU AND DESIRE TO TRAIN

“Training with Dominick Cruz, Dominick Cruz, I learned that he’s a bona fide champion. We swapped a bunch of wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu positions, and I asked him a bit about how to move in the octagon—something he does differently from the rest. What most impressed me about him, though, was his desire to train. I thought I trained a lot; I was blown away by him. And he was there with an injured hand, and he trained hard all the same.”

3. TAKEDOWNS AND BACK TAKE WITH GSP

“Training with Saint-Pierre was marvelous. I learned that he’s really confident, and his wrestling is just sick, not to mention he never gets tired. He showed me a lot of takedown combinations and some details he likes using after getting the takedown. As for me, I showed him some ways of taking back.”

4. VITOR BELTORT AND PSYCHOLOGICAL MATURITY

“On Vitor, shoot, I felt he was really mature this fight. Anthony Johnson was five kilos overweight—a total lack of professionalism. Vitor didn’t get flustered by that, and UFC Rio was a great test for him, a test he passed with flying colors. He proved he’s ready for anything at all.”

No muay thai, o Ray Sefo me treinou de perto e me corrigiu em diversos aspectos.

If you, dear reader, are an MMA fan and have been hungry for some Jiu-Jitsu, UFC 142 was a banquet. Among the tasty morsels, GRACIEMAG.com highlights Gabriel Napão’s choke, Yuri Marajó’s armbar, Edson Barboza‘s sweep, the crippling (as always) heel hook of Rousimar Toquinho , and the goose-choke pulled off byVitor Belfort.

To analyze some of the most striking subs from the event, we called on a Jiu-Jitsu black belt and future MMA star—one who was even called up for UFC 142.

JIU-JITSU, PREEMPTION AND GOOSE-CHOKE COUNTER-ATTACK

Light heavyweight Caio “Monstro” Magalhães ended up not making his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut, as his opponent, the hard-hitting Fabio Maldonado, was injured in the days preceding UFC 142.

To make use of the adrenaline, though, he presented two defenses for the excruciating move Toquinho used on Mike Massenzio.

The Nova União representative from the Brazilian state of Ceará also demonstrated how he’d surprise an opponent attacking his back—something Anthony Johnson didn’t even hint at doing against Belfort, to the joy of the HSBC Arena.

Check it out and comment below: what would you do to escape these submission holds?

Jiu-Jitsu, antecipação e contra-ataque do esgana-ganso

To anyone who doesn’t keep up with Jiu-Jitsu, or is immune to MMA fever, it could seem like José Aldo became famous overnight, with his big win over Chad Mendes at UFC 142 last night.

However, as GRACIEMAG.com readers know so well, the Nova União black belt has been toiling hard for years to make it to the top and the tip of everyone’s tongue—and he’s worn out many a gi too. Which happens to be what he’s still doing, usually in the weeks that follow a fight.

At GRACIEMAG.com’s request, the UFC featherweight champion’s team dug deep into their collective memory to point out the five most memorable matches of José Aldo’s Jiu-Jitsu career, prior to reaching stardom. The fighter from the Brazilian state of Amazonas first appeared on the pages of GRACIEMAG back in 2004, for a performance he put in at a No-Gi tournament in the town of São João da Barra. There, Aldo brought the crowd to a frenzy with a barnburner of a match against Rodrigo Damm, in a frenetic footlock exchange.

Despite having been around the competition block, especially at purple and brown belt, Aldo’s teachers don’t have too many of his matches fresh in their memory. For one simple reason:

“It’s getting harder and harder to remember,” replied Dedé Pederneiras fighting off sleep one day before UFC 142. “That’s because back then he was just another guy on the team. Now he’s our UFC champion,” smiled the coach.

The one who ends up solving the issue is Professor Vitor “Shaolin”, who himself has a knack for journalism.

“He competed against Cobrinha, Bruno Frazatto and Wilson Reis. And he had an awesome match against Celso Venícius in a lightweight absolute tournament in Buzios. It was a great match,” recalls the teacher at NYC BJJ academy.

Aldo against Rodrigo Damm in submission wrestling in São João da Barra, Brazil. Photo: Gustavo Aragão.

1. AGAINST RUBENS COBRINHA

Still at brown, José Aldo crossed paths with four-time featherweight world champion-winning black belt Rubens Charles Cobrinha (Alliance). They had two matches and both were won by Aldo, as remembered by Dedé Pederneiras. GRACIEMAG.com has been hunting down videos of the encounters as though lost treasure. Anyone with the video, please get in touch!

2. AGAINST CELSO VENÍCIUS

In 2004, the beachgoers who strolled past the mats at Arena Búzios got the chance to see one of José Aldo’s greatest matches, for free. Celso (Gordo Jiu-Jitsu) is the one who recalls it: “We were brown belts, and we came up against each other in the first match of the under-75 kg absolute. We scowled at each other and the mood was one of altercation immediately but it wasn’t personal—fight stuff. He pulled guard on me, I got my leg out, stayed in half-guard and won. In the end I sunk a Kimura lock; I don’t remember if I finished with it but it was along those lines. He was already a really tough fighter; if he hadn’t concentrated on MMA he’d have certainly made more of a name for himself in Jiu-Jitsu.”

3. AGAINST WILSON REIS

At the 2003 IBJJF Worlds, at the Tijuca Tennis Club in Rio de Janeiro, two MMA aces crossed paths as purple belts before reaching stardom. “We made it to the light featherweight quarterfinals and it was a tough, fast-paced fight from start to finish. I already knew Aldo from prior championships but a lot of folks didn’t know him yet,” recalls Wilson (BJJ United), a onetime Bellator champion.

“Even so he surprised me with his accelerated game, good conditioning and great stamina. He took the lead on advantages, but I managed to land a double-leg takedown and win by 4 to 2. It was a tough match, one of the Jiu-Jitsu wins I’m proudest of, since I always saw him as being one of the top guys.”

4. AGAINST BRUNO FRAZATTO

An ace from Atos Jiu-Jitsu team and a student of Roberto Tozi, Bruno Frazatto was another to Aldo’s worth in the gi, as a brown belt. “Of course I remember,” says Frazatto. “I lost, and the loser never forgets. I’m still carrying bile for him (laughs)! It was in 2004 in Niterói. It was a war, 4-4 on the scoreboard and he won on advantage points, if I remember it correctly. We swapped a bunch of sweeps and ended up in a tangle that seemed like the 50/50 guard. He was already the stalwart fighter he is today. You can tell him I want a rematch—but only in the gi (laughs)!”

5. AGAINST LEANDRO MARTINS

To get a sense of what José Aldo’s style in the gi, check out this match against Leandro Martins, who at the time represented TT Jiu-Jitsu and is now on team CheckMat.

The post 5 of José Aldo’s most memorable Jiu-Jitsu matches first appeared on Graciemag.

A UFC that showcased Yuri Marajó and his slick armbar, Gabriel Gonzaga and his choke, Edson Barboza and his sweep (just before his knockout of the year), Toquinho and his ligament-shredding Jiu-Jitsu, and of course, Vitor Belfort and his good fortune, as well as the technique acquired from years at Carlson Gracie’s academy.

“Belfort fought really well and is still a tough guy,” said Wand, his next opponent, in praise over Twitter. “Thanks for the kindness, brother,” said Vitor in thanks.
