Roberto Cyborg não teve um ano fácil. Até garantir o ouro na categoria de pesadíssimos no Mundial Sem Kimono,no fim de semana passado, o faixa-preta de Francisco Toco e nosso GMA em Miami teve que se superar. Mas quem disse que as dificuldades não podem trazer a felicidade? No bate-papo a seguir, Cyba mostra que tudo depende de atitude.

Este título veio em boa hora, não? Conte um pouco das suas dificuldades nesta temporada.

Este ano, em geral, foi um ano muito difícil e de superação. Acabei me lesionando muito, machuquei o joelho no começo do ano e fiquei fora do circuito do primeiro semestre. Quando voltei a treinar para o ADCC, tive uma lesão grave no ombro no NY Ultimate Absolute, em agosto, quando tomei um bate-estaca e rompi três ligamentos. Fui na guerra para o ADCC, sem treino nenhum e ombro rompido. Consegui ainda beliscar um bronze no Mundial, bronze no ADCC com duas das finalizações mais rápidas do evento, ouro absoluto do Miami Open e ouro no Mundial Sem Kimono para lavar a alma!

Quais os planos para 2012?

Estou focando agora na recuperação das lesões pra voltar 100% no ano que vem. Acredito muito na força de vontade e que ser campeão é uma atitude e não um momento. Venci a mim mesmo várias vezes por estar lá no tatame dando o meu melhor. Diante de tudo o que aconteceu este ano e da carga de trabalho que tive, estou muito feliz e realizado. Acho que 2011 foi um ano ótimo, de grandes conquistas dentro e fora to tatame! Bati recorde com 32 seminários no mundo todo, média de três por mês. Acho que fui o atleta do Jiu-Jitsu com o maior número de seminários.

E você tem outras novidades, no lado afetivo também, não é?

Acabei de lançar o Tornado DVD NoGi, que está sendo um sucesso (www.nogiworldchampion.com). Estou com mais de 15 filiais no mundo todo e abrindo mais duas aqui na Flórida até o fim do ano. Minha equipe está crescendo todos os dias, fizemos vários campeões mundiais, levamos o Pan No-Gi por equipes. Para finalizar, encontrei o amor da minha vida e me casei! Ufa, que ano!

E para 2012, o que já tem no planejamento como lutador?

Ano que vem, além da agenda cheia de seminários e muito trabalho, tenho uma luta casada com o Andre Galvão no NY Absolute, em fevereiro, e Abu Dhabi Pro em abril. De resto, vou lutar tudo, como sempre! Pano e sem pano, vou competir tudo o que puder. O que prometo é muito Jiu-Jitsu bonito para o ano que vem.

Roberto Cyborg didn’t have the easiest of years. Up until he won the ultra heavyweight division at last week’s No-Gi World Championship, the Francisco Toco black belt and our GMA in Miami had to jump through the some hoops. But who’s to say hardship can’t pan out in happiness? In the following interview, Cyborg shows how it all depends on your attitude.

Here’s what he had to say:

This title came at the right time, didn’t it? Tell us about what you’ve been through this season…

Overall this year has been one of trials and overcoming hurdles. I got injured a lot, messed up my knee early and sat out the whole first half of the year. When I got back to training for the ADCC, I got a serious shoulder injury at NY Ultimate Absolute in August, when I got slammed and tore three ligaments. I went to war at the ADCC, without training at all and with a torn shoulder. I managed to get bronze at the Worlds, bronze at the ADCC with two quick finishes, gold in the absolute at the Miami Cup, and gold at the No-Gi Worlds to cleanse my soul!

What’s on tap for 2012?

Now I’m focused on rehabilitating injuries so I can be back at 100% next year. I really believe in will power and that being champion is an attitude and not a moment. I outdid myself several times because I was on the mat giving my best. After all I went through this year and the workload I took on, I’m really happy and fulfilled. I feel 2011 was a great year, one of conquests on and off the mat! I made a record of 32 seminars around the world, an average of three per month. I think I was the Jiu-Jitsu athlete with the most seminars!

You have some other news, not just from your career but your personal life, don’t you?

I just launched the DVD Tornado DVD NoGi, which has been a hit (www.nogiworldchampion.com). I’ve got 15 branches around the world and am opening another two here in Florida by the end of the year. My team is growing every day, we have several world champions, we won the No-Gi Pan team contest. To wrap up, I met the love of my life and got married. Whew… what a year!

Have you made plans for 2012 as a competitor?

Next year, besides my agenda being crammed with seminars and lots of work, I have a match against André Galvão scheduled for the February NY Absolute, and there’s the Abu Dhabi Pro in April. Other than that, I’ll compete anywhere, as always! Gi or No-Gi, I’m going to compete everywhere I can. I promise there’ll be lots of good Jiu-Jitsu next year!

O que achou da participação no Miami Open?

O Miami Open foi muito bom e organizado como sempre. Graças a Deus, estou muito feliz com o trabalho que a equipe vem fazendo. Eu e o Pablo Popovitch montamos o The Avengers BJJ e só está rendendo bons frutos. Tivemos mais de 50 alunos inscritos, ficamos em 2º lugar entre as academias, a apenas dois pontos da Gracie Elite, e ganhamos quase todos os absolutos. Assim como fechamos todos os absolutos nos últimos eventos da IBJJF (Pan Sem kimono e Honolulu Open), repetimos agora.

Mas como foi a sua participação?

Tive duas lutas no peso e duas no absoluto. Fui campeão no peso tendo finalizado o Stephen Hall na final. No absoluto acabei fechando com meu parceiro de treino Marcus Almeida “Bochecha”, moleque muito bom, aluno do Rodrigo Cavaca que está tirando onda, fechando todos os absolutos com agente.

Como estão os preparativos para o Mundial Sem Kimono?

Os treinos para o Mundial não podiam estar melhores. Essa é a próxima missão dos The Avengers, conquistar o mundo tanto no peso quanto no absoluto! Vamos entrar com uma galera muito boa no evento, eu, Pablão (Popovitch), Jeff Monson, Cavaca, Bochecha, Wagner Rocha, Jake Mackenzie, Thiago Abreu, James Brasco, João Macaio, Marcel Goulart, Rafael Chaves, Guedes… O treino está alucinante, todos estão muito bem treinados e ansiosos para por os pés nas áreas de luta de Long Beach.

Vai buscar peso e absoluto novamente?

Como sempre vou nas duas categorias. Amo lutar no absoluto e este ano, com certeza, temos força pra dominar na Califa!

Alguma novidade pensando na próxima temporada?

Fui muito feliz neste ano com o Jiu-JItsu, com várias grandes conquistas. Mas já sabia que era só um preparatório para o ano que vem. Vou lutar tudo que vier pela frente. Pretendo lutar os dois Mundiais (com e sem kimono), assim como o ADCC e o World Pro pela primeira vez. Que venha 2011!

What’s your assessment of the Miami Open?

The Miami Open was great and well-organized as always. Thank God, I’m really happy with the work the team’s been doing. Pablo Popovitch and I set up Avengers BJJ and now we’re just reaping the rewards. We had more then fifty students signed up and took second in the overall team dispute – just two points behind Gracie Elite –, plus we won nearly all the absolutes. Just as we closed out all the absolutes at the last IBJJF events (No-Gi Pan and Honolulu Open), we’ll do the same again now.

How about your performance?

I had two matches at weight and two in the absolute. I won my weight group beating Stephen Hall in the final. I ended up closing out the absolute with my training partner Marcus “Bochecha” Almeida, an awesome kid, a Rodrigo Cavaca student who’s on a roll, clocking out absolutes with us.

How’s your preparation for the No-Gi Worlds going?

Training for the Worlds couldn’t be going better. That’s The Avengers’ next mission, to conquer the world both at weight and open weight! A good group is going into the event: me, Pablo (Popovitch), Jeff Monson, Cavaca, Bochecha, Wagner Rocha, Jake Mackenzie, Thiago Abreu, James Brasco, João Macaio, Marcel Goulart, Rafael Chaves, Guedes… Training is out of the world, everyone in top shape and anxious step step onto the match areas in Long Beach.

Will you compete at both weight and open weight again?

As always, I’1l be in both division. I love competing in the absolute, and this year, for sure we’ve got what it takes to dominate in California!

Any news for next season?

I’m really happy with how things have gone in Jiu-Jitsu this year, with the various big conquests. But I already knew it was just preparation for next year. I’ll compete in everything out there. I intend to compete at both Worlds’ (gi and no-gi), as well as the ADCC and World Pro for the first time. Bring on 2011!
