Jiu-Jitsu and judo Black Belt, the young Pedrinho Moura will begin to walk with the new degree in the European 2015, scheduled for 21 to 25 January in Lisbon, capital of Portugal.

The ultra heavy category is filled with beasts like Ricardo Evangelista (GFTeam), Igor Silva (GFTeam), Gabriel “Fedor” Lucas and José Ferreira (UAE), but the novice, who was world champion in the brown belt division in 2014 wants to surprise.

“I won the IBJJF worlds in the purple and brown belt. Although I have had good results previously, now at the black belt everything resets. It is a new beginning and I am motivated to conquer my space. It is a category that everyone will arrive well prepared. I weigh 103kg, I think I’m one of the lightest in my class. This can make a difference in movement and gas to play against my opponents, “said Pedrinho.

The Ribeiro’s athlete wants to win for his wife as well. After all, he left aside their honeymoon to keep training for the IBJJF tournament.

“Recently, I got married and my wife gave up our honeymoon trip to live my dream. So you have an idea, in the wedding preparations she took care of everything; I just went there and got married (laughs). I do not intend to disappoint her or the people who believes in my work, “concludes the beast.

This year Justin announced his move to MMA and save for his invitation to ADCC, his Jiu-Jitsu competition schedule is no longer booked. At the beginning of the year he completed his masters degree in dietetics from Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and plans to take on the ADCC title in the under 77 kg category later this year in Beijing, China. So far, a good year for the busy American black belt.

With the no-gi tournament season heating up, the training must start now. GMA Gracie Barra Manhattan Beach is on top of it with black belt competitor and professor Rodrigo Freitas in the lead.

On July 19, the academy held a wrestling seminar with one of the top coaches today, Kenny Johnson. Having trained under the legendary Dan Gable at the University of Iowa, he is now a wrestling expert for UFC fighters like Anderson Silva, Roger Gracie, Lyoto Machida, BJ Penn, Jose Aldo, Paul Daley and more. The class helped students with details of takedowns.

Another renowned athlete joined the ranks of Anderson Silva’s camp this month. André Galvão, a two-time world Jiu-Jitsu champion, arrives with the job of honing the Spider’s ground game for his bout opposite Chris Weidman on July 6 – the main event of UFC 162 in Vegas.

Experienced precisely in defending against Weidman’s main weapon, takedowns, Galvão encountered Weidman in competition back at the 2009 ADCC. As dangerous as Weidman’s takedowns and ground work are, Galvão believes the undefeated Weidman doesn’t possess enough weapons to surprise Anderson.

“Chris is a strong man and a good wrestler, and he likes doing the hand triangle by passing guard to the right side. I don’t think he’s going to surprise Anderson on the ground,” Galvão told Combate.com. “Unless something unexpected happens, like a hand getting through, because a fight’s a fight … But what we’re telling Anderson to do is be calm, for I believe Weidman doesn’t have much up his sleeve to try and take the belt. I think his only resource is the ground, but the rounds are five minutes long, which is not a lot of time to exert one’s technique over Anderson, who is himself a Jiu-Jitsu black-belt.”

Galvão went on to stress Silva’s calmness when he’s on the bottom, something that may turn out to be crucial.

“I think if he falls inside the guard, Anderson has very long legs, as well as a different positioning, a different vision. We learn a lot from Anderson, too – he’s a very studious guy. If the [Weidman] passes and mounts, it’s going to be just like what we’ve already seen in some other fights. Anderson is very calm. He can get his mind ready for every possible fight situation. I believe Anderson’s in great shape and will be bringing the belt home to Brazil once more.”

During the Worlds 2009, Otavio tested his no-gi game with success and closed the medium heavy with Romulo Barral.

With the second world championship title of Jiu-Jitsu in June, Otavio Sousa (Gracie Barra), 26, not only won the gold medal and recognition of the fans as the best black belt of the world at middleweight.

The student of Jose Olimpio, Zé Radiola, also earned an invitation to participate in the ADCC in Beijing, China, on October 18 and 19 this year in the 77kg division.

A Gracie Barra professor living in Irvine, Otavio talked about the next challenge and detailed his training by email exchange with GRACIEMAG. Check it out.

GRACIEMAG: How does it feel to participate in your first ADCC, and in China?

OTÁVIO SOUSA: It was the best thing that could have happened, because I could not participate in the ADCC trial in Brazil, in April, because I was very busy here in California with the gi training for the Worlds and classes at Gracie Barra. This invitation came at the right time, the competition is very tough but today I am a more mature athlete with more confidence. I feel that my positions are more accurate and adjusted than a few years back. Let’s see now without the gi. I still remember when I was a kid and watched the ADCC, with all those black belts giving shows and performing unforgettable fights. This year I will fight the most classic of the tournaments without the gi there in China, and I’m pretty happy about that.

How do you evaluate the 77kg division, of the legendary Marcelo Garcia, who will still have Leozada Nogueira with his guillotine and perhaps Kron and others?

The competition will be ruthless, as usual. It is a slightly lighter weight than I usually compete, which goes to 82kg. So I still need to lose some weight, but nothing else. I’m excited and I’m not a true beginner; after all, I already attended other events without the gi. In 2009, I even closed the medium heavy at the No-Gi Worlds with my partner Romulo Barral here in California.

What do you change in your game during a no-gi tournament?

The game changes just a bit, but you need to make some adjustments. The difference in the end is that the fight slips a lot more and you can’t grip the same way. Techniques need to be better, so you don’t lose the move. And, of course, attention needs to be focused on the legs and feet, especially in ADCC, because all locks are allowed. As the fighter has nothing to hold, it becomes much more difficult to defend these twists.

How are you going to train for the ADCC? Did you change anything?

I’m focusing on my workouts to come back with the victory, God willing. I’m training no-gi Jiu-Jitsu with the beasts of Gracie Barra and wrestling with Jacob Harman, from Calvery Chapel. He teaches various MMA athletes like Renato Babalu, Rafael dos Anjos, Beneil Dariush among others. I am happy to be able to train with these beasts.

What is the main aspect to win a tournament like ADCC, Otavio?

One of the recipes to success is self-confidence. I worked a lot on it before the Worlds, I trusted in my game and I thought I was going to do well. I believe in my potential and I will do anything to be victorious in this too. Another recipe is to never underestimate any opponent and never expect an easy fight. In this regard, the Worlds and ADCC look the same. So I will continue applying this thinking to compete in Beijing, and continue with the same focus and training discipline I have always had.

The heavyweight Paul Tarcisio Jardim is training at full speed to do well in Abu Dhabi on April 13 and 14 in the WPJJC professional event, with millionaire prizes. To shine in the event of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the black belt from CheckMat has sharpening his takedowns and his guard, not just at the gym, in João Pessoa, Paraíba. He also competed in the Pan 2013, at the end of March, where he won third place in his weight division.

Today, Tarcisio teaches some traps from the sitting guard so you can use it on your friends at the gym. The starting position begins in half guard, as he shows in the video below.

Note that, at :33, the black belt from Paraíba teaches how to master the grips and to fit the right leg on the opponent’s thigh in order to sweep.

At :39, with the grips, Tarcisio releases one grip and goes up to hold the opponent’s lapel and going over the right leg, taking away the opponent’s option of rolling and passing the guard.

At :57, Jardim comes back to the starting position with the grips dominated and encourages the opponent to pass the guard to the left. After that, he stretches the opponent’s leg taking the base away, but defends the position with his hand. Now you just need to release the grip on the left arm of the opponent and take the back. Use the hook on the opponent’s left foot, kick back and take the back.

And what if the opponent defends the sweep? Replace the hand on the lapel and sweep.

At 2:37, see how the professor passes the lapel from one hand to another. Note that he keeps the right leg stretched on the thigh of the opponent.

At 2:40, he supports his hand on the ground, lowers the leg and rotates the hip to sweep the opponent. Note that Tarcisio Jardim doesn’t release the lapel when the opponent is with his back on the floor.

Fourth placed on the IBJJF competitor ranking, the list of the eight fighters through to the IBJJ Pro League (find out about it here), Bruno Frazatto has been changing gears.

The Jiu-Jitsu gold medal collector is training hard for his return to MMA. Undefeated in four fights, the featherweight hasn’t sported gloves since 2007 and anxiously awaits his chance to get back in the mix.

A black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and former interim champion of the UFC, Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira, 35, remains a fan-favorite in Brazil. He recently featured on the cover and within the magazine “Serafina”, by “Folha de São Paulo” newspaper, in an article by Eduardo Ohata, the journalist who wrote the Anderson Silva biography, just released in Brazil.

Minotauro’s next challenge will be to take on the heavy-handed Jiu-Jitsu blue belt Cheick Kong at UFC 149 on July 21 in Calgary, Canada. Though he’s none too pleased about fighting away from his homeland, the Brazilian is training hard to take out his supersized opponent. And he still harbors hoping of fighting before his home crowd in Brazil again—if UFC 147 won’t be happening, then June 23 in Belo Horizonte, the next chance.

DOUBLE-LEG WITHOUT RISKING YOUR NECK

In Calgary as in Brazil, the legend will likely be received with the same fanfare and affection as he enjoyed in the town of Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul State, where he attended the tryouts for the professional world championship in Abu Dhabi.

There, he shot the breeze with young Jiu-Jitsu practitioners and ended up teaching, alongside his black belt counterpart Paulo Zulu, a simple and basic way of not getting caught in a guillotine, whether in Jiu-Jitsu, submission grappling or in MMA.

As the UFC star tells Ohata: “The only sense in being successful is being able to share it with others. It comes back to you.”
