Rockson Gracie foi um dos pesos-plumas mais promissores de seu tempo, apesar da curta trajetória como lutador.

Nascido no Rio de Janeiro, Rockson cresceu perto de Santa Monica, na Califórnia, onde ganhou seus primeiros torneios. Primogênito de Rickson, neto de Helio, o jovem Gracie alimentava o sonho de representar o legado da família e fazer bonito nos ringues de vale-tudo e nos tatames de Jiu-Jitsu.

Mas o sonho não se concretizou. Rockson morreu tragicamente em dezembro de 2000, aos 19 anos, em Nova York. 

Em uma de suas vindas ao Rio de Janeiro, Rockson foi entrevistado pelo carismático Jorge Guimarães, o “Joinha”, no quadro “A Hora da Luta”, em junho de 1998.

Com 16 anos na época, Rockson comentou como via o Jiu-Jitsu e como lidava com a pressão da inevitável comparação com o pai.

“Tem uma certa pressão, mas eu estou lidando bem com isso. Sou um competidor normal, como os outros. Estou aí para competir com qualquer um para dar o meu máximo e fazer o que posso. Eu não sou o Rickson, sou o Rockson”, afirmou o Gracie.

Rickson Gracie’s first child, Rockson Gracie, was a BJJ phenomenon in his own right. Before he left us in December 2000, Rockson took part in a few BJJ tournaments, always parading an aggressive style.

Among those tournaments was the 1st Rickson Gracie Cup, held in 1997 in Los Angeles. Still a blue-belt, Rockson faced Japan’s Manami in a clash of passer vs. guard player.

Scoring with guard passes and several attacks, Rockson won on points and secured the event’s blue-belt light featherweight title. You can check out his style in this video.

O faixa-preta Kron Gracie, 25 anos, está convicto da mudança de foco na carreira: chegou a hora de migrar para o terreno cheio de perigos e adrenalina do MMA. O campeão do ADCC 2013 confirmou mais uma vez ao GRACIEMAG.com que vai fazer sua estreia em 2014, provavelmente entre maio e agosto.

Quanto ao Jiu-Jitsu esportivo, Kron se disse “um pouco fora do circuito”, apesar de abrir exceções para torneios sem kimono como o ADCC e outras eventuais disputas de lutas sem pontos. Ainda assim, a fera vem treinando com o pano regularmente. Primeiramente, o lutador até 77kg afastou alguns boatos que circulam na imprensa japonesa, de que faria sua estreia pelo Pancrase.

“Não, não é o Pancrase”, disse Kron, de volta à Califórnia depois de uma série de seminários no Brasil. “Como ainda não fechei nada, não quero falar. Aprendi que, na vida, quando tem alguma coisa que você queira muito mas não está 100% nas suas mãos, não é bom falar nada antes. Você acaba tirando a energia daquilo”.

O Gracie afirmou que pode lutar nos EUA ainda, no entanto, ou mesmo no Brasil:

“Realmente tem algumas coisas acontecendo no Japão sim, não só em relação a MMA. Mas estou aberto a propostas de eventos dos EUA, do Brasil ou de outro país. Acho que no Japão a coisa seria mais legal, pela festa, pelo respeito que eles demonstram e pela oferta, já que vão pagar mais. Quero estudar minhas opções para tomar a decisão mais correta possível. Não está fechado, mas a ideia deles era que a luta fosse em agosto. Eu preferia fazer mais de uma luta em 2014, e para isso queria fazer a estreia logo em maio ou junho. Vamos ver”, comentou o peso meio-médio.

O filho de Rickson elogiou ainda os colegas da academia de seu primo Cesar Gracie, onde tem trocado socos e ajudado nos treinos de Jiu-Jitsu. Ele falou ainda sobre um esperado retorno de Nick Diaz ao UFC.

“É muito bom treinar com caras tão duros quanto eles, e todos vindos de bons resultados, já que o Gilbert Melendez, o Nate Diaz e o Jake Shields venceram suas últimas lutas, e eu também ganhei no ADCC”, lembrou Kron.

“Sobre o Nick, não sei, da última vez que nos falamos ele estava completamente aposentado. Folga mais do que merecida, afinal foram 12 anos lutando praticamente de três em três meses, e contra caras do mais alto nível. Mas acredito que a motivação dele está para voltar, ainda mais se for para ele voltar a fazer um bom dinheiro, pois ele só está gastando”, brincou o faixa-preta.

Undefeated, having won by submission in all his eleven official MMA matches, Rickson Gracie is victorious as an icon living a life of dedication to Jiu-Jitsu. But even the samurai, who exhudes confidence and seems to be unbreakable, nurses wounds slow in healing.

In a can’t-miss interview with the gang at Ragga magazine (read the whole article in Portuguese here, starting at page 76), the Gracie comments on the loss that turned his world upside down. Never before has Rickson spoken so candidly about the death of his son Rockson, found dead in a New York hotel in December 2000. This is how he replied to the question “What’s the worst beating you’ve ever taken?”

“Without a doubt, the loss of my son, ten years ago,” he admits.

“I feel that his passing represented a lot, because I managed to deal with this loss. Nothing is more significant than losing someone you truly love. When you talk about a loss, you may think of strength, perseverance, praying, the belief that there will be a tomorrow, all these factors, when a friend perhaps comes over and puts his arm on your shoulder. All these opinions are relevant, but the truth is that I came to the conclusion that none of that matters. When you lose something truly profound, you have to sit, cry, and accept that you’ve hit rock bottom,” he vents.

“Deep down, you see a reason to shoot yourself in the head, to stop doing the right thing, to stop being a happy person. You may want to fools yourself, thinking “it’s bad, but I can take it,” and that’s the kind of lack of honesty that will never cure the wound. I hit rock bottom and decided, deep down, whether I would come back to the surface or not,” he adds.

The Gracie took many years in coming to terms with the tragedy, and changed the course of his life and the way he leads it. Part of his plan was to return to Brazil. Other foundations were family, the gentle art, and learning, even if through suffering.

“I went through the healing process with my family. For practically three years I was focused on recuperating this energy and seeking some reason for me to be happy again. And that reason is my three beautiful kids, my family, Jiu-Jitsu. To put the issue to rest in my head, I spent a long time looking for a bright side to this loss, something I could take away from this tragedy as an advantage. After much meditation, withdrawing to the woods, without feeling any desire to surf, play, train, I reached the conclusion that there was an advantage, a positive side. Up until that moment, I had never really valued time, I always thought I controlled my time, that I could put off talking to my son until tomorrow, that I could put off that trip or class until later, that time was just a question of reworking my agenda. I put off doing a lot of things thinking I’d be able to do them later. With my son’s departure, I understood that there is no tomorrow. We have to do everything as though there were no tomorrow.”

And again Rickson affirms that he is retired, he will not fight again. Indeed, the black belt hasn’t fought since Rockson’s death. The most heavily-anticipated fight at the time was a matchup with Kazushi Sakuraba.

“That fight would have been the biggest payout of all times. They offered me five million dollars, it would have put me on easy street. He beat a number of Gracies, and it would have been a good fight for me, perhaps the best fight. He really was a thorn in the side of all the Gracies.
