E as regras?

The headline on GRACIEMAG #77 read: “The mother of all fights.”

That’s how we tried to put in words one of the most thrilling matches in the history of the ADCC.

Ricardo “Cachorrão” Almeida and Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza met in the semifinal of the -88kg division of the 2003 ADCC, in São Paulo, Brazil.

Cachorrão had Renzo Gracie on his corner while Jacaré had friend and teammate Fernando Tererê giving him instructions.

The match lasted almost 40 minutes, but could have ended in less than one.

Right in the very beginning, Jacaré caught Cachorrão in a tight guillotine, but could not get the tap.

Ronaldo Jacaré vs. Ricardo Cachorrão at the 2003 ADCC. Photo by Gustavo Aragão

After that, both stood up and spent the next minutes exchanging takedown attempts.

Around the eighth minute, Jacaré managed a double leg but the two fighters ended up out of bounds.

Cachorrão, in great shape, stepped on the gas and managed to almost catch Jacare’s back twice.

Regulation time ended with a tie.

Right at the beginning of the first overtime, Cachorrão tried a rear-naked choke, but could not lock it in place.

The search for the opponent’s legs continued and both fighters seemed tireless.

At the very end of the first overtime, Jacaré almost got to Cachorrão’s back, but Ricardo resisted and both ended up in a insane scramble that landed them out of bounds.

The first overtime also ended with a tie.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-141006" class="size-full wp-image-141006" src="https://www.graciemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/DSC_0030.jpg" alt="Ronaldo Jacaré vs. Ricardo Cachorrão at the 2003 ADCC.
Cachorrão went for a takedown at the beginning of the second overtime and was one hook away from taking Jacaré’s back, but could not get the points.

Another five minutes passed without points being scored by either fighter.

Once again the refs gathered to decide if they were going to choose a winner or allow another overtime.

And so the third one came along.

After Jacaré attacked with a takedown, Cachorrão went for an americana on his left arm, but Jacaré defended well.

After one last attempt of takedown by Cachorrão, the third overtime ended.

Both fighters celebrated, but the refs still wanted to see another five minutes.

At this point, the whole crowd was paying attention to the match despite two other mats also having matches going on.

Roughly two minutes into the fourth overtime, Jacaré put his judo to work and got a takedown.

Cachorrão turned on his stomach to defend the pass, but eventually gave up his back.

The score was now 6-0 in favor of Jacaré.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-141008" class="size-full wp-image-141008" src="https://www.graciemag.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/DSC_0033.jpg" alt="Ronaldo Jacaré vs. Ricardo Cachorrão at the 2003 ADCC.
After some struggle, Cachorrão was able to get Jacaré off of his back and they stood up again.

Behind on the scoreboard, Cachorrão went after Jacaré for a takedown and maybe a back take to tie the match.

Jacaré played it safe and with a lot of sprawls defended his lead until time ran out.

As soon as the match ended, Cachorrão applauded his opponent and after the ref raised Jacaré’s arm, the two warriors hugged for a long time.

They knew they had done something very special.

GRACIEMAG’s story on the match (it deserved a full feature aside the main story devoted to the 2003 ADCC) read: “The end of a great battle makes both fighters respect each other even more. Without the other, they wouldn’t be able to display the greatness they did. They would never be able to walk out of that mat as better fighters and better human beings if it wasn’t for the other.”

Watch the whole match on the five videos below.

A Jiu-Jitsu brown belt and former lightweight champion of the UFC, the good fella Frankie Edgar, 30, released his own reality show, and the ones who gain from it are us, from the hundreds of lessons it has to offer.

In the first two episodes, Ricardo Cachorrão and the Renzo Gracie student talk about the UFC 150 event, look back on what he has learned over his seven-year career, discuss making a move down a weight class to take on José Aldo, and provide several lessons in Jiu-Jitsu and MMA.

Examples?

1. Competing is evolving

“If you go to the gym everyday, if you practice and observe, you will improve. But it’s by competing that you really learn. Your game develops faster after every championship,” explains Frankie.

2. A good Jiu-Jitsu student is one who tries to prove to himself that he can do it

According to Ricardo Cachorrão, Frankie is one of the most dedicated students he’s had because he repeats, repeats and repeats the techniques not to please the instructors, but to satisfy himself. “He always tries to overcome. Not to show it to someone, but to prove to himself that he is able to do it,” says Ricardo.

3. If your team is winning, don’t change the players

A good attack is one that works. The right way is the one that gets you the finish. If it’s working the way it is, then you’re doing it right. When it starts going wrong, find the mistake and correct it. That’s what Renzo Gracie teaches in the video, talking about Frankie’s weight. “He was already the lightweight champion when the UFC created the featherweight category. And like we say in Brazil, if our team is winning, don’t change the players”, says Gracie.

4. Changing category is not the winning formula

“I’ll end up changing category in the future, but it’s not any formula for UFC success. Reducing weight doesn’t mean the guy will get there and dominate the new category”, explains Edgar.

5. Lost it? Don’t try to make something different; try to make something better

About his defeat to Ben Henderson, Frankie teaches: “When I get a taste of defeat, I get anxious to get a chance to fight the guy again and give it back,” he says. “For the rematch on August 11, I don’t intend to make anything different. Just to do the same, but better”.

Bons treinos!

Thousands of fans turned up to watch the weigh-ins for UFC 128 up close this Friday.

Unlike in recent editions of the pre-event weight-in, there were no scandalous antics during the staredowns. Even so, the main event between Maurício Shogun and Jon Jones, for the light heavyweight title, promises great emotion.

“I feel fine, it’s the greatest opportunity of my life and is definitely a good situation,” said Jones, the challenger.

“He’s certainly a great fighter, but the belt is mine. I see some of the things he said as disrespectful. I can even understand him feeling confident, but tomorrow we’ll see who the better man is,” says Shogun.

Check out some of the highlights from the weight-in:

GRACIEMAG has a new section in the magazine that’s causing some chatter. Every month, teachers from the Jiu-Jitsu planet lust ten indispensable tips for white belts to evolve in training, taming opponents like lack of motivation, stagnation, and injury.

Tips like these ones, fished out of and old GRACIEMAG 134. It was 2008, and Ricardo “Cachorrão” Almeida in the Training for Warriors sections listed four of the most common errors when performing the armbar.

1) Beginners often put too much emphasis on pulling the arm and end up alerting their opponent that the attack is coming. Rather than that, concentrate on using your hips, raising your body, and trapping the arm. Only then do you use your arms to complete the hold.

2) A lot of beginners forget to put their leg over their opponent’s face to trap the arm, which allows them to roll with the motion or escape the hold. Make sure the head is trapped.

3) When the arm is trapped, the athletes often forget to clench their thighs together to keep the arm trapped and adjust the submission hold.

4) A lot of students forget to control the wrist. Make sure the hold on the wrist is strong and the opponent’s thumb is pointed upwards.
