Esdras Jr is in the midst of a great phase on the competitive circuit of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). The black-belt from Ares has been going strong for four consecutive tournaments – he became champion at the IBJJF’s Dallas Open, Houston Open, New Orleans Atlanta Open and, most recently, at the No-Gi Pan, one of the most important competitions on the 2021 calendar.

His latest triumph, along with the points won in previous tourneys, caused Esdras to grab the top spot in the master 1 feather division with 135 points – nine more than the UFC fighter Rani Yahya.

In a recent interview, Esdras Jr spoke of what makes him a champion in 2021. “It’s hard to talk about just on aspect, but I think consistency is the key to reaching any goal. Maybe I’m not even training more in terms of volume, but without a doubt, I’m trying to train in a more intelligent way. Knowing how to understand your body and respect your limits is very important to comprehending when you have to do that training session where you’re fighting for real – most days! – or train by trying to understand and control the situations more. I’ve been going hard in my physical preparation since late last year, focusing a lot on injury prevention work. I’m feeling very well physically and mentally.”

To earn the gold medal at the No-Gi Pan, Esdras Jr had to defeat three tough opponents, including Silvio Duran (Nova União) in the semifinal round and Ermilio Lima (Fight Sports) in the final.

According to Esdras, he felt well and prepared for each match. “I was happy with my performance,” he said. “But I can say the toughest fight this time was cutting weight. The last time I weighed less than 67kg, I was in middle school! This Pan was the first time I hit feather in no-gi, which is well below feather in the gi. On the day of the competition, I woke up weighing 66kg – there I woke up feeling well and ready to fight. It was an incredible journey.”

He went on to offer advice on winning any BJJ competition: “First, one should not worry about the result! Perhaps it seems like madness to say that, but when we think about results too much, the tendency is to demand a lot of ourselves, and I believe this demand brings about unnecessary tension. Step on the mat alert, but with tranquility. It’s about doing what you trained to do, match by match, trusting yourself and your jiu-jitsu. That’s all you should think about. Have patience to play – jiu-jitsu is like chess.”

And finally, on the subject of mindset, he said: “When you do what must be done, it works out! It’s a matter of training hard, dieting, physical preparation, technical and tactical training, knowing your strong points and developing a game plan. It’s impossible not to feel well and prepared. Step on the mat and believe that your plan is going to work. Work on your mind to be positive when things don’t come out as planned, because knowing how to control your mind is important. Believe until the end! I couldn’t go without mentioning also Fellipe Barros, my mental coach, who is always there when I need him.”

Sunday night was one of big thrills at UFC Phoenix, held in Arizona. As well as the main event featuring Francis Ngannou and Cain Velasquez, which Ngannou won, another highly anticipated bout took place.

Kron Gracie, son of Rickson Gracie, arrived in the UFC’s featherweight division with a record of four wins by submission and the responsibility of representing the storied family. His opponent, Alex Caceres, known for his unorthodox moves, could turn out to be a problem for Kron at the mid-to-long distance, but the Brazilian’s jiu-jitsu soon went into action.

Right in the first few minutes, just like in his previous showings, Kron followed the Gracie strategy of shortening the distance. Avoiding Caceres’s strikes, Kron placed himself behind his opponent, with a hook crossing Caceres’s thigh and ending on the opposite knee. After taking the fight to the ground, Kron spun to place the second hook, and to wrap up, a finely adjusted rear naked choke did the trick.

Noite de grandes emoções no UFC Phoenix, realizado no último domingo, dia 17 de fevereiro, no Arizona. Além da colisão entre Francis Ngannou e Cain Velasquez, luta principal no qual Francis levou a melhor em poucos segundos, outro duelo muito aguardado tomou lugar no card principal.

Kron Gracie, filho de Rickson Gracie, chegava na divisão de pesos-penas do UFC com quatro vitórias por finalização, e a responsabilidade de representar a família mais casca-grossa do mundo. Seu adversário, Alex Caceres, conhecido por seus golpes pouco ortodoxos, poderia ser um problema para o Gracie da média para a longa distância, mas o Jiu-Jitsu da fera brasileira logo entrou em ação.

Logo nos primeiros minutos, assim como em suas apresentações anteriores, Kron seguiu a estratégia Gracie ao encurtar a distância. Evitando os golpes de Alex, Kron se posicionou atrás do adversário, com um gancho atravessando a coxa de Alex e terminando no joelho oposto. Ao levar a luta por solo, Kron girou para colocar o segundo gancho, e para liquidar a fatura bastou um ajuste fino no mata-leão.

Na luta principal, Francis Ngannou pisou no cage para receber Cain Velasquez, que voltava ao cage após quase três anos inativo. A luta não durou muito: logo em sua primeira investida, Cain se expos e um justo golpe de Ngannou tonteou Cain. No caminho ao solo, Cain torceu o joelho e ficou entregue ao ataque de Ngannou, que bateu para garantir a vitória.

Outro destaque do card principal ficou para a vitória do brasileiro Vicente Luque sobre Bryan Barberena. Após três assaltos de trocação intensa, Vicente conseguiu aplicar bom golpe no fim do terceiro assalto para vencer e garantir o bônus de luta da noite. Os outros prêmios de 50 mil dólares ficaram para Kron Gracie e Luke Sanders, este último ao nocautear Renan Barão no segundo assalto.

Mais um Gracie terá a árdua missão de levar o nome da família ao maior evento de MMA do planeta. Filho do mestre Rickson Gracie, Kron Gracie fará seu debute no UFC na madrugada de domingo (17) para segunda-feira (18), por volta da meia-noite, contra Alex “Bruce Leeroy” Caceres em edição realizada em Phoenix, Arizona, transmitida com exclusividade pelo Combate a partir das 19h30 de Brasília.

Dono de um cartel modesto de quatro vitórias no MMA (todas por finalização), com uma luta realizada por ano desde 2014 e sem atuar desde o Rizin do Ano Novo de 2016 para 2017, Kron terá do outro lado do cage o já rodado Alex Caceres, que tem 26 lutas de MMA (14v, 11d, 1nc), 19 delas no UFC. Como o astro do Jiu-Jitsu pretende vencer sua estreia? Analisamos suas quatro lutas para entender melhor o estilo da fera nos cages.

Com o Jiu-Jitsu afiado ao melhor estilo Rickson Gracie, com posições de execução precisa como mandam as cartilhas clássicas da família, o chão é certamente o melhor caminho para Kron, mas chegar ao solo no MMA pode ser complicado, principalmente para um atleta que tem o chão como base forte. Adversário mais sagazes colocam em prática exaustivos treinos de sprawl para evitarem serem postos de costas no solo, mas Kron desenvolveu seus truques ao longo dos anos.

Em suas primeiras lutas, Kron fazia uso do famoso pisão apresentado ao mundo por Royce Gracie nos primórdios do UFC. Ao se aproximar, cinturava e levava para o chão, e trabalhava seu fino Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono. Contudo, ao evoluir no esporte, Kron ganhou mais confiança em pé, e adicionou o jogo de boxe para encurtar e trabalhar suas quedas.

A influência dos irmãos Diaz, craques na trocação que treinam Jiu-Jitsu com Cesar Gracie, trouxe para Kron alguns truques para chegar ao seu objetivo. Depois de trocar em pé na distância, Kron joga o cruzado e segura na nuca do adversário, para golpear no clinche antes de aplicar suas quedas, e por vezes até puxar para a guarda.

O jogo de finalização dispensa análises. Com transições versáteis, como as já vistas tanto de kimono quanto sem na época de competidor, Kron avança para pegar em posições clássicas: triângulo, armlock e mata-leão já foram aplicados pela fera no MMA.

Contudo, além da análise técnica, a preparação e o emocional de ambos os atletas conta muito para o resultado final. Será que Kron irá manter sua tranquilidade no maior palco do MMA mundial? Será que Caceres irá quebrar o hype criado no filho do ilustre Rickson? Comente conosco!

Kron Gracie e Alex Caceres em arte de MMA FNL

O duelo no UFC entre o estreante Kron Gracie (4v, 0d) e o experiente Alex Cáceres (13v, 11d) será a luta de número 5 mil no Octagon criado pelo tio de Kron, Rorion.

Números fora, o UFC Phoenix, exibido nos EUA pela ESPN no domingo 17 de fevereiro, e claro, pelo canal Combate no Brasil, terá um confronto de estilos interessante.

O peso-galo Alex “Bruce Leroy” Cáceres, como seu apelido confirma, tem como uma de suas maiores inspirações um astro do cinema. Trata-se de Taimak Guarriello, ator que interpretou Bruce Leroy no filme “O último dragão”, de 1985. Chegaram a treinar juntos, inclusive, em encontro recente, para orgulho de ambos.

No início de sua carreira, Cáceres fez a vida imitar a arte ao ingressar num torneio de “luta de rua” em Miami, na Flórida, com algumas edições promovidas literalmente num fundo de quintal. Ele queria seguir os passos do personagem Leroy e de sua maior inspiração, o ator e faixa-preta Bruce Lee, que também era um lutador leve e ligeiro.

Alex então assinou com a organização americana King of the Cage, onde começou a demonstrar que seu estilo de MMA poderia fazer uso do sistema jeet kune do popularizado por Bruce Lee. Claro que o americano sabia que apenas lutar bem em pé não o levaria longe, e chegou a praticar Jiu-Jitsu na academia de Renzo Gracie em NY – primo de Kron, por sinal.

Não se sabe se Cáceres vai aparecer com o traje que gosta, o macacão amarelo consagrado por Bruce, mas sua missão será mesmo de cinema: tentar parar um Gracie invicto, com quatro vitórias, e todas por finalização (uma chave de braço, um triângulo e dois estrangulamentos).

Perdendo ou ganhando, para Alex sempre restará a filosofia de seu ídolo Bruce Lee, que ensinou: “Esqueça sobre ganhar e perder; esqueça o orgulho e a dor. Não se preocupe em escapar com segurança – coloque sua vida diante do seu oponente”.

Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu formado na equipe Soulfighters e campeão mundial pela IBJJF em 2014, Augusto Tanquinho conheceu esta semana seu próximo adversário. No UFC Fight Night 103, agendado para o dia 15 de janeiro, em Phoenix, nos EUA, o craque no chão encara Frankie Saenz, em duelo na divisão de pesos-galos.

Apesar da forte base no Jiu-Jitsu, Tanquinho ainda está em seus primeiros passos no MMA. Com apenas seis lutas no currículo, Tanquinho chegou ao Ultimate após manter invicto por cinco combates, e conquistar o cinturão no Legacy FC. Parceiro de treinos do ex-campeão Ben Henderson, a fera chegou no Ultimate de última hora, encarou o duríssimo Cody Garbrandt, e foi nocauteado em sua estreia.

Agora, Augusto terá Saenz como adversário. Mais experimentado no MMA e lutando em casa, o wrestler de origem e faixa-azul de Jiu-Jitsu tem na carreira 15 lutas, com 11 sucessos e quatro derrotas, duas delas em sequência em seus últimos embates, contra o aposentado Urijah Faber e Eddie Wineland, respectivamente.

O card ainda conta com outro campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu. BJ Penn, veterano do esporte com dois cinturões do UFC na carreira, encara o jovem Yair Rodriguez na luta principal. Confira abaixo o card parcial do evento:

Campeão dos meio-médios e dos leves do UFC, além de ter no currículo o título de primeiro estrangeiro campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu na faixa-preta, Penn terá pela frente o jovem Yair Rodriguez, em card agendado para o dia 15 de janeiro, em Phoenix, no Arizona, EUA.

Penn (16v, 10d, 2e) tenta voltar à ativa após dois anos parado. Em seu último duelo, foi superado por Frankie Edgar e anunciou o pendurar das luvas. Após mudar de ideia, foi agendado para encarar Dennis Siver duas vezes, e após teve lutas agendadas contra Cole Miller e Ricardo Lamas. Nenhuma delas rolou.

Rodriguez (8v, 1d), por sua vez, foi campeão do primeiro “TUF Latin America”, e está embalado no UFC com seis vitórias seguidas, a última contra Alex Caceres.

Ainda no card, está confirmado o duelo peso-mosca entre o brasileiro Jussier Formiga contra o Sergio Pettis, irmão do ex-campeão dos leves Anthony Pettis.

The movement “Aloha Marrow Factory” will be at GMA member Gustavo Dantas’ next event, the 6th Southwest BJJ Classic on October 25 & 26 at the Phoenix College.

They will be spreading awareness and helping the “Be the Match” Foundation raise critical funds to help match volunteer marrow donors with patients who have blood cancers such as leukemia or lymphoma. And YOU can help by joining their team or supporting the fundraising efforts with a contribution! Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer. Often their only hope for cure is a marrow transplant. Your contribution to the “Be the Match” foundation will help adding new potential marrow donors to the registry, helping patients struggling with uninsured costs and funding research.

The leader of the movement “Aloha Marrow Factory”, Tai Thai, is a cancer survivor. “I was diagnosed with Leukemia in March of 2014, right after winning the 2014 AZ International Open (Blue/Master 3/Super Heavy). After enduring two rounds of intense chemotherapy with a 60 day stay in the hospital, I beat cancer! My cure was to have a stem cell transplant. Luckily for me, I have three brothers and four sisters. My brother was my perfect match,” said the AZ International Open Gold medalist.

But after beating cancer, he did not want to stop there. His goal became to raise as much awareness as he possibly can so that other lives may be saved as his own was.

Tai will be at the “Aloha Marrow Factory” booth where he will be selling t-shirts & ribbons with proceeds going directly to the “Be the Match” Foundation, as well as educating people on how they can take the next step towards saving a life.

O brasileiro Rafael dos Anjos terá mais um grande desafio no octógono do UFC. Após bater Ben Henderson com um belo nocaute, Rafael tem pela frente o encrenqueiro Nate Diaz, que faz seu retorno ao peso leve do UFC para encarar o brasuca no co-evento principal do UFC no Arizona , em 13 de dezembro.

Dos Anjos (22v, 7d) bateu o ex-campeão Benson Henderson em agosto deste ano, e anteriormente vinha de vitória sobre Jason High, no mês de junho. Apesar do poder na trocação, Rafael é um faixa-preta de mão cheia. Graduado por Roberto Gordo, ele conquistou oito de suas vitórias com o Jiu-Jitsu.

Já Nate Diaz (17v, 9d) fez sua última apresentação no UFC em novembro do ano passado, quando bateu Grey Maynard com um belo nocaute da noite. Faixa-preta de Cesar Gracie, Nate tem oito finalizações no UFC, somado ao seu boxe peculiar, o irmão de Nick Diaz se torna um perigoso oponente para Rafael.

A edição do UFC em Phoenix, no Arizona, tem na luta principal o aguardado duelo entre Junior Cigano e Stipe Miocic, duelo que aconteceria no UFC em São Paulo. Ainda no card, Gabriel Napão encara Matt Mitrione e Alistair Overeem pega Stefan Struve.

Jiu-Jitsu is growing so rapidly and more and more opportunities are coming up for athletes to compete, to attend seminars and workshops.

Recently, Sophia McDermott Drysdale of GMA Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu in Las Vegas, NV and Mackenzie Dern of GMA Megaton Jiu-Jitsu in Phoenix, AZ visited Mexico to train and share their knowledge amongst some lucky ladies. In attendance were students of Jiu-Jitsu who traveled far and wide from all across the United States and Latin America to attend the eight-day camp.

Purple belt Itzel Bazua, who is a pioneer in the sport for women in Mexico, organized the event to help build awareness of Jiu-Jitsu in Mexico and give others the opportunity to learn from two experienced black belts, World and Pan Am Champions.

In between the morning and night training there was time to do some sight seeing such as visiting the temples and Teotihuacan!

The previous month Sophia McDermott Drysdale, with brown belt Ronda Andrews, also taught a camp at the MA Supershow at the Venetian in Las Vegas. The event was organized by brown belt Shama Ko, who is the founder of the very successful support group, Girls In Gis which brought over 80  ladies from all across the United States who were all there to share and learn and make friendships regardless of affiliation or belt rank.

It is great to see more events being held for women and all Jiu-Jitsu practitioners as a whole. Stay tuned for more info for big camps and events that Mackenzie and Sophia are involved in.

Professor Gustavo Dantas is bringing a wealth of knowledge/experience to the students of Horizons Martial Arts. He is a fourth degree Jiu-Jitsu black belt with nearly twenty years of coaching experience. Gustavo has competed in tournaments in Brazil, United States, Japan and United Arab Emirates, including his most recent accomplishment, the gold medal at the 2014 Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship in the black belt master 2 featherweight division.

A motivational speaker, certified mental & life coach with a bachelor’s degree in physical education from UFRJ (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro), Gustavo left Brazil in 1999 with three thousand dollars, two bags, and one teenage dream: to have his own 100% Jiu-Jitsu academy and make his living through the passion of his life, Jiu-Jitsu. The Gustavo Dantas Jiu-Jitsu Academy was established on March 6th, 2012, re-enforcing the statement, “Believe in your dreams. Hard work pays off”.

Gustavo was the Jiu-Jitsu coach of the Mixed Martial Arts Gym, Arizona Combat Sports for eleven years, where he achieved his 2-0 MMA Record. During that time, Gustavo started the mission of promoting Jiu-Jitsu in the State of Arizona, becoming the vice-president of the Arizona State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and turning a small, 40 competitor, “in-house” tournament in 2001 to an impressive 705 competitors in 2011, helping Arizona to be recognized as one of the Jiu-Jitsu power houses in the United States, where he produced nearly thirty World Championship medalists.

Well respected in the Jiu-Jitsu community as well as a great competitor, coach, and human being, Gustavo continues to build champions on the mat and in life in Arizona and he hopes to spread out his coaching philosophy to more Jiu-Jitsu practitioners for years to come.

The six-time world champion is currently recovering from her knee surgery but plans to return to competition in the following months for the Abu Dhabi WPJJC and World Championship. But after, she’s headed south to support the Mexican Jiu-Jitsu Federation and to promote women training.
