Jackson Sousa, of Checkmat, shone last weekend as he won gold at heavyweight and absolute at the IBJJF Paris Open.

Samuel Monin (Gracie Barra) was his opponent in the heavyweight final, but not for long. With a back attack and a tight choke, Sousa secured his first gold medal in a little less than a minute. You can watch it right here:

Em ação no Paris Open de Jiu-Jitsu, realizado no último final de semana, a fera Jackson Sousa, da Checkmat, brilhou ao faturar o ouro tanto no peso pesado quanto no absoluto.

Para abrir sua campanha vitoriosa com dois títulos na competição, Jackson encarou Samuel Monin (Gracie Barra) na final do peso, e não deu chances para o adversário na disputa.

Com um ataque certeiro pelas costas, com um estrangulamento justo, Jackson garantiu o ouro com pouco menos de um minuto de luta.

Last weekend the French capital welcomed the Paris International Open IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Jackson Sousa (Checkmat) stood out above the rest of the men with double gold. In the heavyweight division’s final, he choked Samuel Monin (Gracie Barra) from the back. In the absolute division, the Cantagalo-raised black-belt defeated Norway’s Tommy Langaker (Nova União).

Cláudia do Val (De la Riva) had no opponents at heavyweight, but had to beat Finland’s Emilia Tuukkanen (Gracie Barra) to secure gold in the absolute.

Gracie Barra ranked first among teams, with 212 points, followed by Checkmat, which scored 129.

A bela capital da França, acostumada ao ritmo frenético de visitantes em busca de suas belezas, museus e pontos turísticos, ficou pequena para a legião de atletas do Jiu-Jitsu que lá chegaram para disputar o ouro e glória do Paris Open da IBJJF, realizado no último final de semana.

Entre os faixas-pretas, Jackson Sousa (Checkmat) foi o atleta em destaque no masculino. A fera faturou ouro duplo na competição, ao vencer tanto no peso quanto no absoluto. No peso pesado, Jackson estrangulou Samuel Monin (Gracie Barra) pelas costas na final para garantir o título. Já no absoluto, a fera do Cantagalo superou o viking Tommy Langaker (Nova União) que ficou conhecido por essas bandas após lutar na Copa Podio de Jiu-Jitsu.

No feminino, a campeã mundial Cláudia do Val (De la Riva) confirmou seu favoritismo. Sem adversárias no peso pesado, a casca-grossa bateu Emilia Tuukkanen (Gracie Barra) na final do absoluto e garantiu a volta para casa com dois ouros na mochila.

Por equipes, a Gracie Barra ficou em primeiro lugar no geral, com 212 pontos, seguida pela Checkmat, com 129 pontos.

Campeão de Jiu-Jitsu com quatro lutas de MMA na carreira, o faixa-preta Charles “Charlão” de França é o mais novo professor a aderir ao programa GRACIEMAG Indica.

Charlão, faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu desde 2000, chegou aos 40 mas seu ímpeto de competir permanece o de um garoto.

Medalhista de ouro em eventos prestigiados da Federação Internacional como o Paris Open 2014, o Miami Open 2015 (peso e absoluto), o NY Open sem kimono, e vencedor também no Grand Slam de Abu Dhabi no Rio, o alagoano radicado no Rio está treinando com afinco para a próxima aventura: disputar o Pan de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF na Califórnia e voltar com uma medalha para mostrar para a filhota.

Day two of the 2014 IBJJF Paris International Open on Sunday, June 29,  saw many of the fighters shed their kimonos and prepare to compete in the faster-paced world of no-gi grappling. Some had chosen to compete in both categories whilst some had saved themselves for the second event. The black belt results were as follows:

In the only match of the lightweight black belt division, France’s Julien Gaillard faced off against Switzerland’s Ilke Bulut in a rematch of their previous day’s encounter. Despite a strong effort from Gaillard the result was the same, with Bulut securing the back and applying a rear naked choke to take the victory and his first IBJJF black belt title.

In the middleweight division, Diego Vivaldo of Guigo JJ overcame Swiss-based Felipe Thiago in the semifinal and Fernando Paulon in the final to take his second gold of the weekend.

The previous day’s action had taken a toll on the competitors in the middle heavyweight division, with three of the six competitors not making it to scales. In the end, Thomas Loubersanes of Acemat claimed the championship defeating US-based Omar Sabha of Brazilian Top Team in the final match.

In the super-heavyweight division, Checkmat’s Chico Mendes continued his run of form from the previous day, taking the gold medal by finishing Ronny Carvalho with an arm triangle within a minute.

Ultra-heavyweight again saw the GFTeam duo of Igor Silva and Leandro Vilar closing out. With no option of moving down a weight class they elected to save themselves for the open class, with Silva allowing Vilar to take the gold this time around.

The absolute division was a rather underattended affair, with the long weekend of fighting draining some of the energy from the competitors. In the end, a cross-team closeout gave Filipe Bobrick of Alliance the gold, Igor Silva of GFTeam the silver, and Chico Mendes and Leandro Vilar the two bronzes.

The first Paris Open held on June 28-29.

The first IBJJF competition in France was always going to be an action-packed event, with competitors both foreign and local fighting for the opportunity to win that historic first gold and the black belt divisions on the first day definitely bore that out. Amongst all of the action on day one of the competition, the GFTeam duo of Igor Silva and Vinicius Marinho were the standouts of the black belt class, with both claiming gold in their divisions and closing out the absolute final.

Fighting up in the medium-heavyweight division (from his customary middleweight or lightweight) seemed to cause Vinicius Marinho little difficulty as he defeated Julien Da Silva 31-0 on points and submitted Braulio Estima student Chris Rees with an overhook armlock to set up a final with Poland’s Maksimilian Wisniewski. Wisniewski had defeated France’s Julien Cazier on his side of the bracket to reach the final. Marinho completed his dominant run, finishing with an ezekiel choke from the mount to take medium-heavyweight gold.

Igor Silva’s ultra-heavyweight category consisted only of him and his GFTeam teammate Leandro Vilar, with the two electing not to fight and giving Silva a chance to save his energy for the absolute division.

In the absolute, Silva didn’t look as if the lack of a warm-up division had hindered him at all, submitting France’s Julien Gaillard with a choke from the mount and finishing Marcelo Bernardo with a quick armbar from guard to reach the final.

Marinho defeated Chris Rees on points in their second match of the day and then due to an ankle injury from a previous match was able to pass by Filipe Bobrick to set up the all-GFTeam final. Silva took the top spot for the record books.

In other black belt divisions, the UK’s Oliver Geddes took gold in the lightweight division, submitting French local Douglas Barcelos with a kneebar and brand new Swiss black belt Ilke Bulut with an ankle lock. Bulut had submitted another local, Julien Gaillard, with a choke from the back to reach the final.

At middleweight, Diego Ferreira defeated the UK’s Gareth Neale and Cleiton Pinheiro to book his final spot against Switzerland’s Thomas Oyarzun, who had himself beaten Swiss-based Felipe Broa in the semifinal on his side of the bracket. Unfortunately, due to an illness coming into the tournament, Oyarzun had to forfeit the final after the strain of his previous match, giving Ferreira the championship.

Finally, the heavyweight division saw Checkmat’s Chico Mendes top the podium, defeating first Marcelo Bernado of Brazilian Power Team and then Filipe Bobrick of Alliance. Both fights came down to a referee decision, with Mendes taking the decisions with his relentless top game.

The women had their own share of action on the day too. An intensely competitive three-woman medium-heavyweight bracket saw Andrea Endy of the UAE defeat Sweden’s Ida Hansson on advantages in the first match, sending her across the bracket to face Laurence Cousin, the first European to win black belt world gold. That match was decided by a single advantage, with Hansson victorious and setting up a rematch in the final. Another frenetic match ensued, but at the final bell the scores were even and the referee decision gave Hansson her revenge and the championship.
