The owner of the fastest finish among the black belt finals of the 2017 Pan, at just 45 seconds, Otávio Sousa has plenty to celebrate.

Souza, the middleweight champion, managed to pull a beautiful flying triangle to dispatch Isaque Bahiense, who had so much momentum in the competition he was even deemed the favorite against the two-time champion.

The day after the end of the Pan, Souza talked to Graciemag about the move.

“In my final fight, against Isaque, I used a move starting from the single-leg,” he said. “My adversary pulled my guard and got up, clinging to my leg. I tried to unbalance him; however, Isaque is very tough in this position, and, to avoid yielding the two points, I took the chance to spring the move on him. Thank God I managed to win the championship and my third title in the black belt.”

Dono da finalização mais rápida dentre as finais de faixa-preta no Pan-Americano de Jiu-Jitsu 2017, executada em apenas 45s de luta, Otávio Sousa tem motivos de sobra para comemorar.

Medalha de ouro na divisão de médios, Otávio conseguiu tirar da cartola um belo triângulo voador, que finalizou o duro Isaque Bahiense, atleta da Alliance que vinha embalado na categoria e chegou a ser considerado favorito contra o campeão mundial pela Gracie Barra.

A fera conversou com GRACIEMAG sobre o golpe aplicado e o porquê de usar a técnica contra o atual campeão da Copa Podio.

“Na minha luta final contra o Isaque eu usei um contra golpe partindo do single leg. Meu adversário puxou pra guarda e levantou agarrado na minha perna. Eu tentei desequilibra-lo, porém o Isaque é muito duro nessa posição e, para evitar de tomar os dois pontos, aproveitei a oportunidade pra dar o bote. Graças a Deus consegui me consagrar campeão e conquistar meu terceiro título na faixa-preta no Pan”, disse a fera.

Valores em dinheiro foram distribuídos para os campeões absolutos de todas as faixas coloridas, com exceção da faixa-preta masculino, que sem absoluto premiou os vencedores nas categorias de peso.

O primeiro a conquistar o cheque foi João Miyao (Cícero Costha), que bateu o rival de longa data Gianni Grippo (Alliance) na final do peso-pena.

Entre os médios, Otávio Sousa (GB) venceu Marcos Tinoco (Alliance). Já no pesadíssimo foi a vez de João Gabriel Rocha (Soulfighters) superar Mahamed Aly (Lloyd Irvin) para faturar o topo do pódio.

Entre as mulheres, a bicampeã mundial Dominyka Obelenyte faturou o superpesado, sem oponentes na divisão, para em seguida morder o ouro absoluto após vencer Laurah Elizabeth (GFTeam).

Three-time BJJ world champion Otavio Sousa added another title to his résumé last weekend as he beat the field of the New York BJJ Pro, an event held by the IBJJF that gives out cash prizes. The Gracie Barra black-belt emerged as the middleweight victor and pocketed 4,000 dollars. Soon afterwards, Sousa talked to Flograppling.com about the state of professional BJJ competitions:

“I love to compete – that’s my passion. But it’s always good to have some money. A lot of people complain jiu-jitsu – you don’t make money in tournaments. Like that’s a good opportunity for them to fight, and sometimes not many athletes register; I don’t know if they’re intimidated because it’s like approved and they think it’s gonna be only tough guys, so they decide not to compete. I think they’re missing a great opportunity.”

The New York BJJ Pro, an event held by the IBJJF featuring cash prizes, took place on the night of November 19 at the Nat Holman Gym (CCNY), in New York. Dominyka Obelenyte stole the show by winning double gold. João Gabriel Rocha defeated Mahamed Aly in the ultra-heavyweight final. Otavio Sousa beat Marcos Tinoco at middleweight. And João Miyao beat Gianni Grippo to nab featherweight gold.

Obelenyte got 1,500 dollars for the absolute. Otavio Sousa, João Gabriel and João Miyao got 4k each. Male runner-ups went home with 1,000 dollars each. Read below the results of the men’s adult black belt divisions, and click here for the New York BJJ Pro’s complete results.

Today has been an interesting day in my Bjj journey: I competed in a tournament I stand against for the lack of equal pay primarily in the black belt division, and won first place in weight and absolute. I needed the competition experience and since I can’t travel much because of school, I decided to do it. Although the end result was a happy one there is still work to be done, the least the ibjjf can do is equalize terms for the absolute by giving women a greater purse. I call upon all my ladies to not get discouraged, with each generation of women, whether they be white or black belts, we see an improvement in not only skill but in division size. It is a rare sight to see women in divisions with one or zero fights in large tournaments these days, and with growing numbers, the push for equal pay cannot be deterred. I encourage you guys to support your women Bjj fighters, watch their matches, understand that their journey is the same as everyone’s: entrenched in hard work and sacrifice. A IBJJF realizou, no último final de semana, mais uma edição do seu famoso BJJ Pro, desta vez em Los Angeles, na Califórnia.

Com o atrativo de distribuir belos prêmios em dinheiro, um batalhão de cascas-grossas compareceram para a disputa, e o show de Jiu-Jitsu rolou  como era de se esperar.

O torneio, que não conta com absoluto na faixa-preta, recebeu nomes conhecidos da arte suave na disputa dos cheques nas categorias de peso, que são enxutas para quatro delas, apenas (pena, médio, pesado e pesadíssimo).

Na categoria mais leve, a dos pesos-penas, quem se deu bem foi nosso GMI bom de Jiu-Jitsu Gabriel Marangoni (CTA), que bateu Richard Jr (Atos) para ficar com a vitória e o cheque de quatro mil dólares.

No peso médio, foi a vez de Otávio Sousa (GB), que sobrepujou o perigoso Nathan Mendelsohn  (Coalition 95) na final para garantir o topo do pódio.

Entre os pesados, o veterano Tarsis Humphreys (Alliance) não quis saber do favoritismo de Kennen Cornelius (Atos) e foi com tudo para morder a vitória e o prêmio na final da categoria.

Já no pesadíssimo, foia vez de Luiz Panza brilhar e faturar o prêmio, ao bater Manuel Diaz (Soulfighters) na final.

The Los Angeles BJJ Pro IBJJF Championship, which took place last Sunday at California State University, in Los Angeles, was a stage to great matches and awarded its champions with prize money from blue belt to black belt masters’. In the adults’ black belt section, which had Luiz Panza, Tarsis Humphreys, Otávio Sousa and Gabriel Marangoni as standouts, the prize was 4,000 dollars for first and 1,000 for second of each category (feather, middle, heavy and ultra-heavy).

At featherweight, with four signed up, the winner was Gabriel Marangoni. The Caio Terra pupil only fought the final, since Michael Musumeci did not show up. In the semifinal that did take place, Rick Slomba (Atos Jiu-Jitsu) beat Rene Lopez 2-1 on advantages. Then Marangoni used a triangle on Slomba to bag the gold.

Four athletes also signed up for the middleweight tourney, and Otávio Sousa came out on top. In one semifinal, Nathan Mendelsohn (Coalition 95) beat Thomas Oyarzum (Fernando Terere Association) 8-2. Otávio defeated his Gracie Barra teammate Gabriel Arges via foot lock. In the final, a triangle gave Otávio Sousa the title.

At heavyweight, world champion Tarsis Humphreys collected another gold. In the six-fighter competition, first Nick Schrock (Ribeiro JJ) subbed Arnaldo Maidana on the foot to advance to the semis. Then Tanner Rice (Soul Fighters) armbarred Inácio Neto (Gracie Barra) after scoring 13-0.

Nick Schrock was then faced with Alliance’s Tarsis Humphreys and lost 6-0. The other semifinal was Tanner Rice vs. Atos Jiu-Jitsu’s Keenan Cornelius, who won 6-0. The controversial final saw Keenan use a toe hold and Tarsis complain that Keenan had reaped the knee. The referees interrupted the match to watch the replay. After discussing at length, they reached the conclusion that Keenan had indeed acted illegally, which meant he was disqualified. That left Tarsis as champion.

Ultra-heavyweight Luiz Panza, of Checkmat, was victorious in his weight class. After subbing Eliot Kelly (Yemaso BJJ) via foot lock he had his ticket to the final. He was joined the by Manny Diaz, who beat fellow Soul Fighter João Gabriel Rocha 2-1 on advantages (4-4 on points). Panza again used his trademarked foot lock to finish first.

Gracie Barra won the teams’ contest, ahead of Checkmat and Atos Jiu-Jitsu.

The IBJJF held the first ever Atlanta Pro championship this Saturday, April 30.

João Miyao, Otavio Sousa, Vitor Oliveira and Leonardo Nogueira walked away with the biggest prizes in the adult black belt division.

In the featherweight, João Miyao beat Bruno Frazzatto for the title and the $4,000 prize.

The middleweight gold medal went to Otavio Sousa, after an armbar finish on Jaime Canuto.

Vitor Oliveira beat Murilo Santana for the heavyweight title while Leonardo Nogueira beat Mahamed Aly by one advantage for the ultra-heavy gld medal.

In the teams’ competition, results were:

As the longest running Jiu-Jitsu event, the Pan Jiu-Jitsu championship has one of the richest stories of all competitions.

One of the most interesting chapters took place in 2009, when featherweight Rubens Charles Cobrinha decided to try his luck in the open class division.

In a year he also won the the featherweight division with victories over Rafael Mendes and Mario Reis, he went on to face the big guys.

Cobrinha started out finishing Abmar Barbosa ad then had to face Rafael Lovato Jr. in the quarterfinals.
