Renzo Gracie e Kazushi Sakuraba vão voltar a se enfrentar de luvas quase 18 anos depois da clássica batalha entre ambos no Pride FC, informou o repórter Jake Nichols, do site TheBodyLock.

Aos 51 anos, Renzo foi contratato pelo One FC e, como ele disse ao GRACIEMAG.com, não vê a hora de sair na mão com o famoso ídolo japonês, que o finalizou numa chave kimura no Pride 10, em 2000. “A luta será nas regras do MMA, ou tu acha que ando relaxando?”, brincou o Gracie.

Em evento do One FC em Boracay, Filipinas, Renzo confirmou que assinou com a organização asiática. Chatri Sityodtong, presidente e CEO da One Championship, disse que o Gracie vai mesmo competir contra Kazushi Sakuraba, de 48 anos, em sua estreia com a organização.

“Não sei se o Sakuraba está pronto e por isso a data da nossa luta ainda não foi definida. De repente faço uma outra luta antes de enfrentar o japonês”, ventilou Renzo.

Nas Filipinas, Renzo falou de sua extensa história com o UFC, e disse acreditar que o One Championship poderá ser a principal organização mista de artes marciais do mundo no futuro, simplesmente “porque eles estão fazendo o que é certo”. Quanto ao UFC, Renzo afirmou: “O UFC se perdeu pelo caminho, pois deixou o dinheiro mandar. Eles hoje não têm alma.”

Renzo completou o raciocínio, para o GRACIEMAG.com: “Quando uma organização não compreende o que é a arte marcial, perde o fio da meada. E foi o que aconteceu com o UFC. Eles perderam a essência ao achar que aquilo é apenas negócio e que o dinheiro comanda. Aqui não tem puta não, meu irmão. Somos lutadores, homens e mulheres de moral que passam a vida procurando fazer o que é certo e não se vendem. Isso eles não entendem.”

Em 2014, Renzo e Saku lutaram por 20 minutos numa disputa de Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono, no evento Metamoris, valendo apenas a finalização. A luta terminou em empate.

Renzo Gracie and Kazushi Sakuraba will meet again almost 18 years after their classic fight in Pride FC, TheBodyLock’s Jake Nichols reports.

At 51, Renzo has signed with ONE FC and, as he tells Graciemag, he can’t wait to throw down with the Japanese legend who submitted him via kimura at Pride 10 back in 2000. “The fight will be under MMA rules,” he said. “Do you think I’m getting soft or something?”

At the ONE Championship Elite Retreat in the Philippines, Gracie confirmed that he has signed with the Asian organization. ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong followed up by saying that Gracie will fight 48-year-old Sakuraba in his debut.

“I don’t know whether Sakuraba is ready, and so the date hasn’t been defined,” Gracie told us. “Maybe I’ll have one fight before fighting him.”

Gracie said he believes ONE will become the leading MMA organization because they’re doing the right thing. Later he told us: “When an organization doesn’t understand what martial arts are, they lose the thread. And that’s what happened to the UFC. They lost the essence as they came to believe that it’s all business and that money rules. We are not whores. We are fighters — men and women with morals, who spend their lives striving to do what is right and don’t sell themselves. That they don’t understand.”

In 2014, Gracie and the “Gracie Hunter” fought for 20 minutes under no-gi BJJ rules at a Metamoris show, with a submission being the only way to claim a win. The fight was a draw.

In a bid to raise money to pay athletes for their work in past events, last weekend Metamoris held a no-gi superfight between Ralek Gracie — its owner — and Gordon Ryan, the sitting under-88kg ADCC champion.

The duel took place at Gracie Academy in Torrance, Calif., a famous dojo with green mats built by Grandmaster Rorion Gracie.

Ryan had complete control over the match. He applied a triangle and adjusted it in inverted fashion to get the tap-out in just over 10 minutes. John Danaher, a coach of Ryan’s at Renzo Gracie Academy, posted this online:

On a bet placed shortly before the match he limited himself to sankaku (triangle) and juji gatame (armbar) attacks – the bet was that it had to be performed between ten and twelve minutes

It’s worth noting that Ryan said weeks before the fight that he planned on finishing Gracie with precisely the move he wound up using. You can click the video below to watch him keep his promise.

Na intenção de pagar débitos de eventos passados, o Metamoris organizou uma superluta sem kimono entre o dono do evento, Ralek Gracie, e ninguém menos que Gordon Ryan, atual campeão do ADCC até 88kg.

O duelo rolou no último final de semana, na Gracie Academy, em Torrance, EUA, famoso dojô de tatames verdes montado pelo grande mestre Rorion Gracie.

Para sair com a vitória, Gordon, com pleno domínio na disputa, aplicou um triângulo e ajustou o golpe de forma invertida, para ter os três tapinhas om pouco mais de 10min de luta. John Danaher, treinador de Ryan na Renzo Gracie Academy, revelou uma aposta feita pelo aluno minutos antes do combate:

“Ele se limitou a triângulos e armlocks”, disse Danaher nas redes sociais. “E que o golpe seria aplicado entre 10 e 12 minutos de luta.” Vale lembrar que Gordon disse, semanas antes do combate, que o plano era finalizar Ralek no triângulo invertido.

The two biggest champions in BJJ history will clash in July in Rio.

Five years after their first encounter, which ended in a draw after 20 minutes, Marcus Buchecha and Roger Gracie will again collide in the gi. The fight is scheduled to take place July 23rd in Rio de Janeiro, at Gracie Pro Jiu-Jitsu.

Graciemag caught up with Buchecha to get his thoughts on the historic duels. “It was a unique opportunity to face Roger Gracie at Metamoris, because he had already announced his retirement from competition,” he said of the 2012 fight. “So I thought that was going to be my last opportunity to fight an idol. The fight was very good. It was a long, 20-minute combat, but I fought really well. I had good moments in the fight. It was a match where only a submission could give someone the win, so we weren’t really concerned with scoring. Because of that, there were moments where I was able to risk more. I had a good chance on the foot, at the end I had another opportunity on the arm… I did everything right with that armbar, but he defended very well. It’s no accident that he is considered the greatest of all time.”

Back then, Gracie was a three-time absolute world champion — the first in history, — and Buchecha had just won his first world championship. This time, Buchecha will step on the mat as the biggest name in the sport. “This rematch will be really cool,” Buchecha says. “It is another opportunity to fight against a guy of Roger’s caliber. This time the fight will be ten minutes, under normal rules.”

He adds: “It’s not easy to train for a fight with Roger Gracie. There is nobody else with jiu-jitsu like his, and, because of his body type, it is very hard to find partners with the same game and the same height. It’s pretty complicated. But I have great sparring partners and I will keep up the pace from my preparation for the Worlds for this superfight, to get there very well prepared.”

Cinco anos após o primeiro confronto, que terminou empatado após 20 minutos de luta, Marcus Vinicius “Buchecha” e Roger Gracie estão novamente em rota de colisão, num duelo de kimono. A aguardada revanche está programada para 23 de julho, no Rio de Janeiro, no evento Gracie Pro Jiu-Jitsu, idealizado por Kyra Gracie. Maior vencedor de títulos mundiais no absoluto faixa-preta, o tetracampeão Marcus Buchecha relembrou o primeiro encontro com Roger.

“Foi uma oportunidade única enfrentar o Roger Gracie no Metamoris, porque ele já havia anunciado a aposentadoria das competições. Achei que aquela seria a última oportunidade de enfrentar um ídolo. Foi um combate longo, de 20 minutos, mas lutei muito bem. Tive bons momentos na luta. Era um confronto onde só a finalização dava a vitória, então não ligávamos muito para a pontuação. Por isso, houve momentos em que consegui arriscar mais. Tive uma boa chance no pé, no fim tive outra oportunidade no braço… Fiz tudo certo naquele armlock, mas ele defendeu muito bem. Não é à toa que ele é considerado o maior de todos os tempos”, recordou Buchecha.

O primeiro encontro entre os dois se deu em 2012, pelo Metamoris, na Califórnia. Na ocasião, Roger já era dono de três títulos mundiais no absoluto – o primeiro a alcançar a façanha, em 2007, 2009 e 2010 – e Buchecha havia acabado de conquistar o seu primeiro título mundial. Agora, Buchecha chega para o duelo como o maior nome do Jiu-Jitsu da atualidade.

“Será bem legal essa revanche. É mais uma oportunidade de lutar contra um cara do calibre do Roger. Dessa vez a luta será de dez minutos, nas regras normais. Não é fácil treinar para uma luta contra o Roger Gracie. Não tem ninguém com um Jiu-Jitsu como o dele e, por conta do biótipo dele, é muito difícil achar parceiros com o mesmo jogo e mesma altura. É bem complicado. Mas conto com ótimos parceiros de treino e vou manter o ritmo do camp do Mundial para essa superluta, para tentar chegar muito bem preparado”, disse.

Antes da superluta contra o Gracie, Buchecha vai tentar buscar o penta absoluto no Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, no início de junho na Califórnia. Buchecha também está confirmado no GP dos pesados da IBJJF Pro League, no dia 26 de agosto, em Las Vegas. O torneio reunirá oito grandes nomes do Jiu-Jitsu mundial em busca de um prêmio 40 mil dólares, e Roger também está escalado.

Para encerrar a temporada, o faixa-preta da Checkmat vai em busca de seu segundo título no ADCC no peso e o inédito ouro no absoluto. No evento na China, em 2013, Buchecha deixou o título absoluto escapar na final, contra Roberto Cyborg. O ADCC, maior evento de grappling do mundo, será mm setembro na Finlândia. Depois da temporada, Buchecha ainda planeja migrar para o MMA, onde pretende lutar na categoria dos pesados (acima de 93kg).

Na luta principal, o organizador do torneio, Ralek Gracie, botou seu Jiu-Jitsu à prova contra o casca-grossa Garry Tonon, em duelo sem kimono de dez minutos, sem pontos ou vantagens, em disputa que só terminaria em finalização ou empate.

A luta rolou solta, mas perto do fim do combate, Garry aproveitou a bobeada de Ralek e encaixou uma justa chave de joelho reta, e obrigou o Gracie a ceder os três tapinhas.

Caio encarou o versátil Jeff Glover, com todas as suas armadilhas e transições loucas. O duelo foi solto e divertido, com vários ataques e provocações durante a luta. No fim das contas, mesmo com toda elasticidade e fator surpresa de Glover, o americano não foi capaz de evitar o armlock de Caio, com pouco mais de 13min de luta.

Roger vs. Buchecha, in 2012

Marcus Buchecha released a pen letter this Tuesday informing the Jiu-Jitsu community that his announced rematch against Roger Gracie at Metamoris 7, on July 17, is off.

The three-time black belt open class champion, who is getting ready for the 2016 Worlds, sent the following message to the press (translated to English from Portuguese).

“Unfortunately, there will not be a rematch with Roger Gracie on Metamoris 7. Actually, I never officially announced this match. It was announced before an agreement was signed. 

I appreciate your support and apologize for all of those who are let down by this news. Believe me, I am as disappointed as you are. I can easily say that I wanted this match as much as you wanted. I wanted to give fans another chance to see that match. Maybe, in the future we could have another opportunity to fight. 

I am now focused and working hard to be at the Pyramid once again on June 4 and 5 in search of another dream: to be world champion once again. Thank you all to all of those who always supported me and have been by my side throughout all I have been through this past year. I can now say that I am back. 

I take this opportunity to congratulate Roger Gracie for his first MMA belt, as always showcasing the efficiency of our art in MMA.”

Roger Gracie confirmed to GRACIEMAG.com that with Buchecha off, he has no interest on fighting anyone else.

“I’m out! There’s nobody else for me to fight. i want to dedicate myself 100% to MMA now.”

Metamoris has yet to announce a new main event for the July 17 event, in Los Angeles.
