After the success in Brazil and Japan, the documentary “From the Samurai to MMA, 500 years of fighting” is finally available in Amazon Prime video to the USA and UK (version with subtitles or dubbed).

The series traces the history of Jiu Jitsu from feudal Japan, through the revolution started by Jigoro Kano, Mitsuyo Maeda and then by the Gracie family in Brazil, to the popularization of the sport around the world through the creation of UFC.

Divided into 5 chapters of 30 minutes, the story is narrated by protagonists and renowned historians. Royce Gracie, Marco Ruas, João Alberto Barreto, Art Davie, Rodrigo Minotauro, Renzo Gracie, Demian Maia, Reila Gracie, Pedro Valente, Royler Gracie, Fabio Gurgel, Mo Jassim and Yuki Nakai are among the 54 characters interviewed in the documentary.

Created by the journalist Marcelo Alonso to Combate channel, the serie shows in detail the importance of the Gracie Dynasty and its main disciples and opponents in the construction of Jiu-Jitsu and MMA.

“I have no doubt that It´s the most complete documentary ever made about the origins of Jiu-Jitsu and MMA”, said master João Alberto Barreto, red belt of Helio Gracie, after the cinema release premiere in Brazil on 2023. First UFC champion in middleweight division, Murilo Bustamante, were also present. “Anyone who lives from Jiu-Jitsu or MMA must learns about the origins of the sport”.

Saudoso grande mestre de Jiu-Jitsu, o lendário Carlson Gracie ficou conhecido por sua exímia habilidade de desembolar as posições mais complicadas e inventivas do Jiu-Jitsu, e também por sua paixão pelos polêmicos galos de briga.

Em um desses causos, surgiu o apelido de Antônio dos Santos, o famoso “Apaga Vela”, um dos grandes amigos de Carlson juntamente com o também saudoso Osvaldo Paquetá.

O apelido inusitado surgiu após uma viagem de Carlson e Apaga Vela, como conta o jornalista Marcelo Alonso no livro “Por trás do octógono”, lançado em parceria entre a editora PVT e Combate:

“Tudo aconteceu em uma noite em que Carlson subia a serra de Teresópolis em um Fusca, com 8 galos, acompanhado de seu inseparável amigo que também era o treinador das aves e parceiro de rinhas. O carro, subitamente, enguiçou na escura estrada. Carlson foi checar o motor do carro, enquanto Antônio acendeu uma vela para conferir os cabos por baixo do veículo. Ao enxergar pelo lado oposto, Carlson viu a gasolina que vazava de uma mangueira e gritou: ‘Apaga a vela! Apaga a vela!’ Tarde demais. O carro pegou fogo e só houve tempo de salvar os galos. O prejuízo do Fusca ficou, mas o apelido está gravado na história.”

Este e mais uma dezena de causos do grande mestre estão no livro “Por trás do octógono”, no qual Alonso celebra 25 anos cobrindo lutas. O jornalista decidiu abrir seu baú de histórias fazendo uma seleção de 100 causos inéditos, que só poderiam ser contados por alguém que viveu de tão perto os bastidores do MMA, muito antes de ela ser considerada o esporte que mais cresce no mundo. O livro conta ainda com 25 charges do desenhista David Carvalho, além da charge do consagrado Renato Aroeira na capa.

O lançamento oficial será na Livraria da Travessa, no Barra Shopping, nesta sexta-feira, dia 21. No sábado e domingo, dias 22 e 23, será a vez da Arena Olímpica receber o evento, durante a realização do Gracie Pro. Já no dia 4 de agosto, Alonso faz o lançamento em São Paulo, na Saraiva Mega Store, do Shopping Ibirapuera. Além do “Por trás do octógono”,  os fãs de luta poderão adquirir também a segunda edição do livro “Do Vale Tudo ao MMA”, com preço promocional.

The second edition of the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo is going to take place November 9 and 10, but the attractions are already coming together. The organizers have confirmed, for example, the presence of brothers Rickson and Royce Gracie at the Long Beach Pavillion.

The masters and MMA idols will be giving autographs and talking to fans on both days of the event. MMA referee “Big” John McCarthy is another name confirmed.

The convention center in Long Beach will be the stage for the big fair, which promises for the second time to bring together the biggest stars of Jiu-Jitsu and MMA in free seminars, superfights, exhibits and conversations about Jiu-Jitsu.

There will be homages to some of the sport’s pioneers like Carlos, Helio, Carlson and Rolls Gracie. Another big attraction is the photo exhibit featuring the work of Susumu Nagao and Marcelo Alonso about the origins of vale tudo, before it became MMA and took the world by storm.

A segunda edição da World Jiu-Jitsu Expo será nos dias 9 e 10 de novembro, mas as atrações já começaram a ser divulgadas no site do evento. Os organizadores confirmaram, por exemplo, as presenças dos irmãos Rickson e Royce Gracie no pavilhão de Long Beach, na Califórnia.

Os professores e ídolos do MMA vão dar autógrafos e conversar com os fãs no sábado e no domingo. Ex-árbitro do UFC, Big John McCarthy é outro nome confirmado.

O centro de convenções de Long Beach será o palco da grande feira, que promete pelo segundo ano reunir as maiores estrelas do esporte e do MMA em seminários grátis, superlutas, exposições e conversas sobre Jiu-Jitsu.

Haverá grandes homenagens aos pioneiros do esporte, como Carlos, Helio, Carlson e Rolls Gracie. Outra grande atração será a exposição de fotos de Susumu Nagao e Marcelo Alonso sobre as origens do vale-tudo antes de virar MMA e ganhar os holofotes da grande mídia.

Formerly from Brazilian martial arts program Sensei Sportv, Filho now joins fellow journalists Gleidson Venga and Marcelo Alonso along with Rodrigo Minotauro and ADCC champion and Sonnen’s training partner Vinny Magalhães, in addressing the circumstances surrounding this weekend’s middleweight title tilt.

The champion’s training partner/coach Rodrigo Minotauro foreshadows what we can expect to see from Silva com the 7th: “It’s always nice to see the champion motivated. I think Sonnen talked too much, and that’s going to come back and bite him.”

On the stream of provocation coming from the challenger, Anderson says, “You have to have a conviction about what you’re actually going to do…”

Followed by a recording of his outburst at the recent telephone press conference: “He’s an imbecile. And on the 7th I’m going to smash his face. I’m going to yank out every tooth in his mouth.

ADCC champ Vinny Magalhães, who has been working with Sonnen on his ground game, chimes in with his expectations: “I feel that if he pressures him with his wrestling he’ll take Anderson down, and he has what it takes to submit him. Whether he’s going to sub him or not, I don’t know. Can he? Of course he can.”

“He’s crazy,” says Silva, “but the promoters of the UFC are also at fault for his posture,” stirring the pot of controversy.
