BJJ icons Fernando Tererê and Marcelinho Garcia once had a fight that went down in the sport’s history. At the 2003 Worlds, Tererê succeeded in sinking a triangle on the Alliance phenom to become a two-time middleweight champion. But few know that they actually fought again.

It happened in a superfight held at the 2004 Japan Open. The duel was marked by Tererê’s pressure from the top. Even without using his sharp judo skills on Marcelinho, he did better, employing dangerous passes and good back-takes.

Two more would come in the two following years to complete his impressive list of five titles in the division, from 2004 to 2011.

But the third one was unique, once it was not decided on the mats, well, at least the final decision was not made on the mats, but on the stands.

After three fights to make it to the final, including a semifinal battle against 2007 world champion Lucas Leite, Marcelinho secured his spot.

On the other side, teammate Sergio Moraes, the 2008 champion, had another perfect campaign and defeated Alan Nascimento to reach the final.

So one last question was left. Who would be crowned the champion?

For such good friends and training partners to fight for the gold medal seemed unlikely to happen.

So under the eyes of Alliance’s leader Fábio Gurgel, the two friends decided to settle the dispute with a simple game, one would say a childish way (but in a good sense).

With one draw of Choosies (or odds & evens) and the champion was decided: Marcelinho.

From the other side of the venue, GRACIEMAG captured the odd moment when a children’s game defined a black belt Jiu-Jitsu World Champion.

O campeão subiu de categoria e vai tentar o bicampeonato entre as feras do até 88kg. Com Pablo Popovitch fora da disputa, quem herdará o trono até 77kg? Uma passada pela lista de 16 nomes inscritos na categoria até o momento faz qualquer um parar no número 11, que é seguido por duas palavras que trazem calafrios aos demais 15 competidores: Marcelo Garcia.

O tricampeão até 77kg do ADCC (e pentacampeão mundial dos médios) é sem dúvida o grande favorito. Para sustentar tal afirmação, basta lembrar que de kimono ou sem kimono, apenas três lutadores venceram Marcelinho em sua categoria de peso desde a seletiva para o ADCC 2003. São eles, Fernando Tererê na final do médio do Mundial 2003, Daniel Moraes na já citada seletiva e Popovitch, na final em Barcelona, em 2009.

Nenhum deles competir em Nottingham, no final de semana, pode significar duas coisas: Marcelinho é favoritíssimo porque quase nunca perde; ou se ele já perdeu para esses três, pode perder de novo. Certamente é com a segunda hipótese em mente que os demais atletas pisarão as áreas de luta na Inglaterra. No Brasil a turma da Atos treina forte no interior de São Paulo e conta com a presença luxuosa de Kyra Gracie.

Na Inglaterra Bráulio Estima se uniu a Pablo Popovitch para finalizar o treinamento que conta também com Lúcio Lagarto, Victor Estima e, em breve, o próprio Roger Gracie.

E nos Estados Unidos foram as feras da Alliance que se uniram para os últimos dias de treino para o ADCC 2011.

Em Nova York, o tricampeão Marcelo Garcia abriu as portas da sua academia para a estreante Gabrielle Garcia, além de Cobrinha, Lucas Lepri, Antônio Peinado, entre outros.

Hoje, no Facebook, Marcelinho postou um vídeo que dá um gostinho de como tem sido a rotina da turma, que inclui também treinos de kimono.

Em mais uma entrevista exclusiva do Blog GRACIEMAG no Mundial, Marcelinho fala do seu treinamento, dá a sua visão sobre o confronto entre experiência e juventude, revela que não muda seu jogo por causa dos adversários e, se não assume o posto de melhor peso médio de todos os tempos, admite que está na briga por causa da sua consistência, lembrando os bons resultados inclusive no absoluto.

No apagar das luzes dessa segunda-feira, Marcelo Garcia publicou um dos raros tweets de sua conta @marcelogarciajj.

Em inglês, disse:”Fui convidado hoje para o ADCC 2011. Bastante ansioso para lutar”.

Com isso, abre-se a possibildade de um quarto duelo entre Marcelinho e Pablo Popovitch, na categoria até 77kg.

O placar de finais está 2 x 1 para o mineiro, mas o atual campeão é Popovitch.

Dia a dia, o ADCC 2011 vai crescendo com as grandes feras da luta agarrada.
