In London at the Clapham Grand, the first edition of the Toukon Challenge, an invitation-only event, took place on Sunday, Nov. 23.

The card featured some of the best grapplers from all over Europe. The show presented matches of different calibers in the following categories:

Prelims – 4 fights of 5 minutes under the IBJJF rules.
Brown Belt Middle Weight Tournament – This is an eight man tournament. Brown belt and black belt fights will be six minutes.
Brown Belt Middle Weight Challenge – One six minute match between two brown belts.
Black Belt Team Challenge – Two teams, each with five black belts will fight each other to decide who is the best. The first team to get three wins, will be victorious and will be taking The Toukon Team belt home with them. Black belt and brown belt fights will be six minutes.
Sub Only – Six match-ups. The fights will be twenty minutes in length and will not be scored. The only way to win is by submission, forcing the athletes to constantly be attacking and looking for a way to finish the fight.
Co Main Event – An absolute superfight between two athletes. Fights will be 20 minutes submission only.
Main Event – A superfight will be 10 min minutes.

Some of the athletes who were involved include Lucio Lagarto, Luca Anacoreta, Eduardo Teto Rios, Max Campos, Thomas Oyarzun, Roger Dardis, Sebastion Brosche, Luke Costelo, Raphael Dos Santos, Viking Wong, Alex Cabanes, Darragh O’Conaill and more.

What makes this event unique is the opportunity for the athletes to earn money. As they promote their own showing in the event, they earn a portion of the pay-per-view and spectator earnings. When one goes onto the site to watch, they must choose an athlete in the drop-down list.

The next event will be on March 15 in London once again with some new categories: a female team challenge, a brown belt lightweight grand prix and a classic fight to name a few.

The final stop on the IBJJF’s European competition schedule for 2014 was also their first trip to Madrid, and it did not disappoint. The Pabellón Deportivo Europa was packed with competitors and supporters, and with a match timetable that ran consistently from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., there was almost a surplus of fantastic matches to watch and stories to be told that could fill ten articles. For now, we shall have to limit ourselves to the black belt adult results, starting with the ladies’ results.

Seven-time world champion Michelle Nicolini of Checkmat team breezed into town as part of her international lifestyle and seemed to thoroughly enjoy herself during her match with Maria Gonzalez of Climent Club. A smile barely left her face as she worked a combination of her famous guard play alongside a dominant top game. Maria was overmatched but gave it her best – however, it was only a matter of time. A little more than halfway through the contest, Michelle was able to reach the mount, locking in an armbar and forcing the tap to become the first ever Madrid International Open female black belt champion. Unfortunately, she and her opponent decided not to repeat their match in the absolute, so this remained the only female contest, but it is always refreshing to see a world class competitor still taking part in the smaller competitions and it brought a greater sense of occasion to an already bustling competition.

To begin the male divisions – the smallest competitor, roosterweight Andrea Verdemare of Cyclone JJ and the largest, ultra-heavyweight Alan Vitor Ferreira of De La Riva JJ were both alone in their divisions but were both more than ready to contest the open class and its opposing challenges and signed up for the absolute as soon as they were able.

Glauco Almeida of Zenith BJJ was the champion of the light-featherweight division, first defeating Jorge Elias of Alliance by disqualification before submitting Spain’s Baruc Barrios with a loop choke early in the final match. Baruc had also defeated Jorge Elias to earn his spot in the final, securing the mount in the final 30 seconds to take the win in a match where he had trailed by a sweep throughout.

Italy’s Simone Franceschini overcame Spanish local talent Sergio Calderon in the featherweight division. Although the match was hard fought and competitive, Simone was able to secure victory by 2 points and take the title in the category.

The lightweight final saw Roger Gracie student Oliver Geddes facing Calasans student and Spanish local Alex Cabanes. Oliver opened the match by attempting to pull guard, a move that Alex countered by acrobatically leaping over the legs and landing directly in the mount position. Although Oliver would eventually work his way back to a guard, he was unable to bridge the gap. An exchange of sweeps from the 50/50 guard ended up with Oliver on top and trailing by 6 points to 4 as time ran out, and Alex Cabanes took his first black belt title in the gi in excellent style.

Regular divisional rivals Luca Anacoreta of Aeterna JJ and Matthias Ribeiro of Matthias Ribeiro JJ met once again in the final of the middleweight division. This time, Luca would be victorious by 9 points to 6, after finishing his previous opponent with a reverse triangle to earn his spot in the final. These two competitors will surely meet again at further European tournaments to continue their back and forth battle.

Swiss-based Ricardo ‘Pezao’ Oliveira of Alliance International took the gold in the medium heavyweight division. He beat out Julien da Silva of Academie Pythagore and Cleiton Novas Pinheiro of Fight Club to claim the top spot on the podium.

At heavyweight, the always well-supported Marcelo Bernardo of Brazilian Power Team clashed with Thomas Johannessen of Frontline Academy in the only match of their bracket. In a close match with a significant amount of time spent trading leg locks in the 50/50 guard, Marcelo was able to emerge victorious on advantages, with one sweep scored for each fighter.

Although there was an impressive 22 black belts registered for the black belt adult divisions, the absolute consisted of a slightly disappointing six entrants, spanning all the weight classes from roosterweight up to ultra-heavyweight. Middleweight Matthias Ribeiro defeated Italian Andrea Verdemare with a lapel wrap cross choke from the 50/50 guard, and then Norway’s Thomas Johannessen after another 50/50 duel, but one that was punctuated by a brief pass to knee on belly to give him the winning points. The final score was 11-8, with the other points coming from back and forth sweeps. The other side of the bracket saw ultra-heavyweight Alan Vitor Ferreira defeat local middle-heavyweight Jaouad Karbal in a match that took place almost entirely on the feet. This was probably the most electric match of the day, with the crowd roaring as the two competitors clashed on their feet. A huge footsweep put Alan in the lead by two points, a position he enjoyed for much of the match. However, with less than a minute left, he misjudged a takedown attempt and ended conceding a counter-takedown to bring the points even. Although Alan still had a narrow lead on advantages, Jaouad saw his opportunity and leapt for his opponent’s back, trying to secure the hooks that would give him the victory. Alan defended well though, never quite giving Jaouad the position he needed. Despite the supportive roars of the crowd, as the buzzer sounded it was Alan who would take the victory by three advantages and face off against Matthias in the openweight final.

Matthias quickly pulled an open guard, using his legs to keep his opponent at bay as Alan tried to stack and flip his smaller opponent. After a short period of this, Matthias was able to secure an omoplata, and as Alan moved to defend he was able to transition to a belly-down armbar and claim the submission victory and the black belt absolute title with it.

In the final match, Luca faced the dangerous guard of English Oliver Geddes (Roger Gracie Academy) but did very well: the Italian submitted with a foot lock.

“I already knew that Oliver was a finisher and does not give much importance to the points in the match. Thus, I carefully protected my feet and my knees, since he is very good in these submissions from the waist down. I was struggling but when I saw the possibility, I counter-attacked and Oliver tapped.” Luca commented in conversation with GRACIEMAG.com.

“Eu já sabia que o Oliver era um finalizador e não dava muita importância aos pontos. Mas eu protegi bem meu pé e meu joelho, já que ele é muito bom nestas finalizações da cintura para baixo. Fui lutando e quando vi a possibilidade, contra-ataquei no pé e o Oliver bateu”, contou Luca, em papo com o GRACIEMAG.com.

The IBJJF has announced the Madrid International Open has reached 95% capacity for its tournament set for Saturday, Nov. 22 in Madrid, Spain.

Alternatively, for the North Americans, the Montreal International Open is still open for registration and will be held on the same day.

In Madrid, black belts have gathered from all over Europe. Jorge Elias, who recently competed and won in Moscow will be in the light-feather division. Sergio Calderon and Simone Franceschini will face off in the feather division as the lone fighters so far. Luca Anacoreta makes his way for the middle division. Black belt females will have a match in the lightweight division between Michelle Nicolini and Maria Gonzalez.

From its beginning in 2011, the IBJJF London International Open has grown each year to become one of the premier events of the European BJJ scene. This was particularly evident this year when the demand was so great that the gi event had to close registration early because the competition was simply filled to capacity with entrants from all over Europe. Competitors from the United Kingdom and Ireland were out in force, but there were entries from Brazil, USA, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Norway, Sweden and Romania to name just a few of the countries whose nationals had travelled to be part of the event.

With a wave of newer European black belts looking to secure qualification points for the Worlds in Long Beach next year as well as test the shark-infested waters of the black belt division, there was a mixture of both established talents and up-and-comers jostling for the places on the medal podium.

In the male light featherweight division, Marcel Oliveira of Frateri Lateri finished British black belt Mark Stephenson with a footlock in less than a minute of their bout and secured the first black belt title of the day.

In the featherweight division, Oxford-based Maximiliano Campos defeated Spaniard Sergio Calderon to claim the gold.

The lightweight division was one of the more competitive of the competition, with Switzerland-based Ilke Bulut defeating the UK’s Oliver Geddes in the final by three advantage points to one. Ilke’s route to the final took him past France’s Douglas Barcellos (by submission) and Brazil’s Italo Lins (by 4-2 on points), whilst Oliver overcame GFTeam’s Gabriel Rainho with a quick footlock.

Within Europe, the rivalries at middleweight are well established and usually tested at every competition within the circuit. This time around, Ireland’s Darragh O’Connaill defeated Italy’s Luca Anacoreta by 2 points to zero. Luca had managed to secure a guard pass towards the end of the match, but Darragh fought hard to prevent the three points and then managed to defend his lead until time expired.

Middle-heavyweight saw three competitors battling it out: France’s Julien Cazier, Poland’s Piotr Wojtkowski and another UK-based Polish fighter, Dominik Debiec. In the first bout, Piotr defeated Dominik by advantages. Dominik in turn defeated Julien to set up a revenge match in the final. Despite his best efforts, Piotr was able to place and keep hooks from the back to earn 4 points, more than enough to take the match and with it the gold medal.

The heavyweight division was won by Johannes Weith, a student of the Ribeiro brothers based in Germany. He defeated Checkmat’s Chico Mendes in the final with a choke from the back, leaving Norway-based Renato Tavares and Switzerland’s Karim Khalifa to collect their bronze medals and round out the division.

Finally, the ultra-heavyweight division saw Antonio Henrique Junior of Roger Gracie Team finish Christophe Levy by submission early in their ten-minute final match.

Italian Roosterweight Andrea Verdemare and British Super-Heavyweight Christopher Bowe were both alone in their divisions, readying themselves instead for the absolute.

Luca Anacoreta didn’t let his disappointment at his result in his division hold him back from putting on an impressive result in the absolute. After several matches, he faced off against Braulio Estima student Christopher Bowe in the openweight final. Christopher had defeated Sergio Calderon with a choke from the back and Renato Tavares on points on his side of the bracket, whilst Luca had defeated Alex Cabanes of Calasans BJJ in his semi-final. Although the fight itself was extremely competitive throughout, Luca eventually took the victory and the absolute title by the slimmest of margins, a referee decision.

Not content to let the male competitors have all the fun, there was plenty of action in the female divisions, too. Multiple-time world champion Luanna Alzuguir of Alliance took on three-time world bronze medallist Shanti Abelha of Checkmat in the middleweight division. Despite Shanti initially displaying a strong top game, an omoplata eventually lead to a sweep that gave Luanna the victory by 2 points to zero.

At featherweight, meanwhile, the first European black belt world champion, Laurence Cousin of France, faced Yasmine Wilson of Roger Gracie London. Even though no points were scored during the course of the ten minute match, Laurence was able to advance and secure the half guard of Yasmine three times to earn the three advantages required to give her the victory and with it the London Open title.

With no one else within her weight class, Victor Estima student Gretchen Zoeller had to content herself by waiting for the absolute division.

Although Luanna decided to sit out of the absolute this time around, the remaining four ladies were still very much in pursuit of the absolute title they wanted. Shanti defeated Yasmine by a single advantage in the first semi-final, whilst Laurence defeated Gretchen. The absolute final came down, then, to Laurence against Shanti, and after ten minutes of hard-fought action, Laurence was the victor and female absolute champion of the London Open.

The third edition of the Copa Podio Lightweight Grand Prix held at the Botafogo Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro ran for five hours on Saturday, May 10.

The event featured two special matches, a submission-only no time limit city challenge, one no-gi challenge and a full grand prix with two teams of ten athletes.

To determine the winner of the grand prix, two teams of five competitors each fought one another within their own team in six-minute matches. Whoever gains the most points fights the second place athlete of the other team. Points are determined as such: A win by submission is 4 points, a win by points/advantages is 3 points, a draw is 1 point and a defeat is 0 points.

On May 10 the third season of the Copa Podio lightweight grand prix will be held in the Botafogo Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro. The names of the ten athletes come from five different countries with the majority right from Brazil. All are black belts, except for Marcio Andre and Hamzeh Rasheed.

The names will be randomly drawn and distributed into two groups: green or yellow. Each athlete will have a six-minute match with every other member of their own team, win or lose. Points will be earned through winning a match by submission, winning a match by points and a draw. No points will be awarded for defeat but win or lose, every athlete will have five matches.

The top two athletes from each group will face each other, the semi-finalist of green vs the finalist of yellow and vice versa. The finals will determine the overall winner of the grand prix.
